Imagine being a German soldier and you're officer telling you and your regiment "it's the end, the wars been lost!"
Wild wolf 453, But even knowing they lost the war and were out numbered out. They still fought valiantly against an overwhelming enemy and managed to buy enough time for the German civilians and get to the British and Americans.
Would picked up my gun and kept fighting taking down more Russians and then when they got to close pull a pin and throw at their feet and smile as they fall and i hit the cold ground.
@@katrinajarrett4251 war isn't like the movies, after firing either the Russians will dig in, fighter planes or artillery will strike, or they will just charge. Depends if you have comrades with you, if you do, they gonna bomb the hell out of your position. And let's not forget about the T34 tanks. Doing what you describe will probably get you killed in 5 seconds.

Was actually translating my grandfathers journals from ww2, apparently he and his SS regiment helped the 9th and 12th army during the Evacuation of berlin

Very interesting, my great grandpas regiment had a leader who tried to escape with his man and it was successfully. So my great grandfather was saved by American soldiers and escaped from the Russian army and the other germans
My Great great grandad died before fall gelb 20th September 1939 died to Russian hands
My great grandfather was just 29 year old when he and his comrade struggle to escape to the west. His regiment was lost in a chaos of eastern German border and he with 3 of his comrade have to find themselves to flee to the west allies. He said that time “If they were catch by the Russian, he swear to kill himself before he was taken as a prisoner of war.” but luckily for him, they meet up with other Lost Wehrmacht soldier who know the direction to the west without fighting or meeting with a Russian. My great grandfather was captured by the American in 20 April 1945, he was send to Canada for 19 year.
I'm still using his motto today “Ich bin nur ein gewöhnlicher Typ, ich mache das nur, um zu überleben.”
Mean: I'm just an ordinary guy, I do this just to survive.
Really goes to show that even after 13 years under Nazi jackboots, the valor of germany still held out. The Wehrmacht holding back the Soviets as long as the could to allow civilian evacuation, abandoning anything that wouldn't be useful for that (example, abandoning the Reichstag and dozens of locations the SS tagged as hold or die priority), executing any crazed Nazi hardliners that tried to enforce their mad orders that would have cost lives, and especially the tanker crews. They knew they'd be big targets, but they also knew they could take it far better than the infantry could. Damaged and downtrodden as they where, those Tigers still had their claws, and they where finally using them for a truly just cause. Even into their deaths.

The 12th was given orders to relieve Berlin and to fight the Soviets back, but it became apparent that they would not, and could not, stop the Soviet horde. They held the Soviets off for as long as they could to open a life line to the west for civillians and soldiers to flee to, holding out for as long as they could, before they were defeated. Truly commendable acts by their men and officers.
They fought for what they believed in, thinking that this would never be the outcome of the war.. Thinking that, as long as Berlin held, the Third Reich would live on. None of them thought their Reich would last 12 years. They thought they were fighting for the right side, and so did the Soviets and the allies.
Gl honestly wish more people agreed that people thought they where fighting for what they thought was right mainly because it was patriotism after America and Russia hit Germany people wanted to join to protect there country not for invasion

Ya know though people drag the German soldier down they weren't all bad, most personal in the Kreigsmarine, Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht weren't Nazis, now obviously there are exceptions like the SS and the Hitler Youth, but looking at my countries military background (I'm a kiwi not that anyone cares) gives me a good look at it and how we don't celebrate our fallen, we get up at the crack of dawn in April and we go to the dawn parades to remember them, and I feel thats how we should see every soldier in all armies, from the US army to the German army no matter the flag those men fought for they're countries and thats how they should be remembered, not demonized and made horrible but remembered and given respect for they're sacrifices.
As a german, I'm really sad because our "Bundeswehr" is getting really less respect, because everyone thinks that Germany isn't allaud to be proud on their soldiers (just the most German guys think so). Your tradition is really good
@@falkus7yt293 And that's honestly quite sad as it happened 80 years ago, its time for the world to move on from those times. From what I've seen the Bundswehr deserves respect as to my knowledge they deploy to other places to help protect our free world and should be respected for it. Its a shame Germany doesn't have days of remembrance for they're fallen because again they were just soldiers, and soldiers deserve to be remembered for they're sacrifice.

The hitler youth werent what i would consider "dedicated Nazis" most members of the Hitler youth were young boys or young men ranging in age from 10-18, but compared to say the nazi high command or the SS, most of the german military were "nazis", but a lot of them didnt share Hitler's view of the world

@@comandante8084 Yeah, tell that to the 300,000+ Hungarian women that got raped. And that is only in Hungary. The Red Army was almost (or even worst in some cases) worse than the Wermacht.
@Joseph Stalin I know they killed more. But that could be because of the much larger population (I'm not defending them, fuck them all). And while the Germans gassed a lot of people, the Soviets worked them to death. And the soviets didn't really discriminate the way Nazis did, they took everyone that was 'against the state'. It really does comes down to personal opinion which was worse, but both were truly horrible.

Yes, Kliment Voroshilov 2, in huge part were spent in our retreat in 1941 - Many of tanks - Т-35, KV2, KV1, T-28 and other, needed in repair, but we hadnt any time on it... And on the churge of Berlin the KV2 didnt used.

If the allies could see what has become of England and Europe now, they would of thrown down their weapons and switched sides instantly.
I honestly think the world should have took out Stalin afterwards it probably would have saved millions and wouldn't have had the nuclear arms race made the world would be in a better condition but we will never know because we underestimated the Russians just like Britain underestimated the germans in 1939

You probably did not know, but the Soviet Union to support the infantry was aviation, and artillery. And the production of KV-1 tanks was completed in 1943, and KV-2 at the end of 1942. And in the future zameneny tank is-2 which showed you what you thank you.
Александр Першин because the soviets had no regard for their soldier lives, earlier in the war men were sent to die with no weapon to defend themselves. It just goes to show that the soviets we the worse of two evils I’m afraid.

@@SteffywithaStify Think about it from an individual standpoint. Say you're born and because of factors like ideology, nationalism and familial ties you love your country. Now take a man who was born in a different nation in different circumstances. Your differences are surface level things like your uniform, language and appearance but under all of that what really are your major differences? You want to live, to love and to laugh and to hold a woman close. They’re really just young men at the end of the day.

The song is about the 12th holding a corridor so that the 9th and some civilians could go west and surrender to the allies instead of USSR.
The question is, was the lives and equipment lost worth freeing occupied France? Depending on what facts you choose to focus on in regards to the French government or French culture, the world may or may not have been better off with Germany controlling the region. Both the Nazi Regime and the French government had a lot of innocent blood on their hands. The Nazi's crimes are well known, but if you want a hint at France's look up the stuff that they were involved with in Vietnam.
Side note: If France was not liberated by the Allies, there is a good chance that the Vietnam conflict would not have happened.
@@paulmetzgar2604 An Axis victory in WW2 would end in a cold War between Britain, America, and the occupied Japan (There is no way Japan beats the US in any scenario) Vs the entirety of mainland Europe and Siberia.
While in our timeline the free world at least held on to the western half off europe.
Not to mention a nazi germany with the industry of almost all of europe and siberia would be in a much better position to declare a hot war on the remaining Allies than the Soviets ever were.
I wouldnt draw a moral equivilence between a liberal democracy with a legacy of imperialism, to a Fascist state which purposely murdered 11million of its own citizens in less than a decade and purposely started a war that killed 80 million in total, and thats not even mentioning the totalitarian control they had over their citizens.
Even from a utilitarian perspective though, a liberated France means a valuable foothold for the allies in the inevitable cold war.
