Suzy has one of the purest, cleanest voices I've ever heard. My favorite song by her, one I wish you'd rate, is "Love Goes Without Saying". It was written by her husband, Doug Rider (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) who wrote or co-wrote quite a few of her songs.
Thanks for the reaction Don! I agree - I’ve listened to this hundreds of times and I think everyone has a different interpretation of it. Cheryl Wheeler wrote this one - great folky songwriter who also had hits recorded by other country artists. To me, this is a song apologizing for neglecting a friend (I don’t think it’s romantic, but who knows). The friend is giving an ultimatum and the singer is trying to win back their friendship and admitting they were wrong.
You shouldn't really worry about not grasping the complete story behind the lyrics (penned by a terrific singer-songwriter by the name of Cheryl Wheeler): Suzy herself said she couldn't figure it out even after the song was published. As I understand it after a research, the narrator is talking to a friend about a third person, who is now the narrator's lover and a former lover of the friend. If this were the case the line "You can't deal me the aces and think I wouldn't play" makes more sense as the friend introduced the third person to the narrator. As the title track of her best known album and one of her biggest hits, "Aces" is arguably Suzy's signature song and it's a personal favorite of mine. As I repeatedly stated in my comments, I'm a fan of Suzy's and I love listening to her voice. "Night rider's lament" and "Outbound plane" stand out in a long list of favorites form her.
Heard this song on the radio the other day and always makes me stop and listen. Her voice is captivating. I've never thought so hard about this song but going to start now! Other female songs that just came to mind: Midnight Girl in a Sunset Town by Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Or: Seven Year Ache by Rosanne Cash
The song is about three people: persons A, B, C. It starts with persons A & B. Person A introduces person B to person C. Persons B & C go off into the sunset. A & B were friends, and C was lover of A. The singer is Person B, who A introduced to C, and then B & C became a couple. Person B is singing to Person A, who complains that they became a couple. Hence the line "You can't deal me the aces and think I wouldn't play." It's as simple as that. Singer (person B) had the goods, shot her shot, and in a way "stole" person C from person A. The aces represent the upper hand that person B could play, maybe even dishing dirt on person A because person C would then see that person A has a lot of skeletons or something. Person B and person C will live together forever, but person B wants person A to forgive her for being a man-stealer, because it's also person A's fault that person A had negative attributes that person B felt person C needed to know about person A.
Oh thanks so much Mark for this wonderful request. I'm a huge fan of Suzy, I've seen her a few times here in Calgary. She was actually friends with Ian Tyson after she recorded Someday Soon, IMHO by far the best version of it too. Ian used to say that Suzy bought him a new roof for his barn by doing that song! I first saw Suzy on the Crook and Chase Show on TNN; she sang a song with just her and her guitar and she blew me away, and I've been a fan ever since. Don you are pronouncing her name correctly as I learned from that very TNN show. Thanks Don for the super reaction and the rating!!! And you do Suzy anytime!!!
This is an interesting one Don, maybe "Aces" refers to it being a wild card that can be used either as a high or low card. So, although he dealt her an ace card in their relationship, she's apparently not using it the way he expected or intended for her to use it. ("You can't deal me the aces and think I wouldn't play"). I don't know, maybe it's an open relationship but he figured she'd still be committed to just him and unfortunately she wasn't and that hurt him. Lol, I'm just fishing of course. Anyway great request and reaction Mark and Don. I've always really liked Suzy's music.
I saw Bogguss perform twice in the late 90s-the first time in Amarillo, and then later in Clovis, New Mexico. I never was able to figure out what this song means.
It has to involve a third person I believe, she says you can't deal me the aces and think I wouldn't play, but it is confusing at times. Still a beautiful song from a beautiful lady.
From Google. I cheated. "The song is about three people: persons A, B, C. It starts with persons A & B. Person A introduces person B to person C. Persons B & C go off into the sunset."
That's how Suzy says her last name too. I really like Suzy's music. Good reaction Don. I suppose you haven't heard the cliche "You hold all the cards in this relationship"? 🙂
The AceS - I believe the aces are the deep knowlegde of the other person , the acces are the other person deepest secrets , the ones that can in diffeerent dimensions really hurt a persons , the keys to a soul , so to me a fight happened and the other person in the relationship on an emotional reaction used what was deeply know to him/her to hurt in the fight. It is easy to forget that musically this is a work of art , from the players to the production , all the best. Oh , if you think about the aces , they mean . the hearts (senibility /romance) , the clubs (the way a person fights) the diamonds (the way a person deals with money) the spades (the dark side , the way a person hurts or sins).
Have you reviewed her songs "Letting Go" and "Outbound Plane" yet? Both were two her biggest hits. One or both reached Number 1 on Radio and Records. Thanks again.
"You can't deal me the Aces and think I wouldn't play" is a poker reference. In other words, you dealt me the hand I'm playing so you shouldn't complain that I'm beating you with it.
I always thought this song was pretty. I never really listened to the words. Now that I have paid attention, I have no idea what she's talking about. That makes it a song I wouldn't listen to often.

Thanks for this! Good info and thoughts.
I second "Night Rider's Lament" just to hear her Yodel. Another great one is "Letting Go".

Never knew this! Thanks!

Man. 90’s country talent production was just QUALITY. I miss it.
menage a trois ... it was suggested to Cheryl Wheeler by her boyfriend

I think she is saying you can't act like a friend and just keep standing on the sidelines and then be surprised when she mores on.
