  • These are the two lenses in the EF-M system that needed to be compared considering they have exactly the same focal length and maximum aperture. In this video I go over build quality, image detail, aberrations, video autofocus, and more. Which lens should you get for your Canon EF-M camera? Which lens do I prefer?

    I bought the viltrox 56mm and I was amazed with this lens. I have the sigma 30mm f1.4 version and I can attest that is a very sharp lens even at f1.4. I thought viltrox will be left behind by a mile away. I was wrong. The difference between Viltrox and Sigma can only be seen when you pixel peep. For the price which is almost half, I'd say this comes highly recommended. Way better than canon nifty fifty.

    So as a new Fuji shooter I decided on the Sigma 56mm 1.4 over the Viltrox and Fuji options. I kind of decided to go w/the Sigma based upon image quality and best bang for the buck as my 2 concerns. The Sigma IMHO won out of the 3 lenses plus I found a great open box deal via one of the larger NYC retailers.
    So far I am very pleased w/the Sigma.

    • @ScottJWaldron

      I agree that the Sigma is a higher quality option, at least compared to the Viltrox 56mm. I'd assume Fujifilm options in a similar focal length are more expensive.

      @@FadiDalati The 32 is a superb lens and I would argue on par with or maybe superior to the 56, especially in the usefulness of its' focal length. But no doubt, the 56 is excellent.

      @@ohmartinbronson I have the 32mm but it does this weird jitter when in servo mode that drives me mad. I haven't quite decided if it's a defect or they all do it. My other Canon lenses doesn't do it nor the Sigma. There are a lot of people online that complain about the focus noise on the 32. It would be a challenger for my favorite lens if it didn't do that. I find myself not wanting to use it.

    Wow, I'm quite shocked at how well the Viltrox did against the Sigma. I have the Sigma and it's one of my favorite lenses. I think the images were sharper and clearer with the Sigma but I think skintones looked better on the Viltrox. The only objective area where the Viltrox loses is the chromatic aberration which is not good. Still, considering the cost difference the Viltrox performed very well. I
    *If* the weird video exposure "rebooting" is fixed and they made a black version I would consider buying one. Well, if I didn't already have the Sigma. I avoided the Viltrox because of the video problems it had early on, it's size/weight and that blasted silver color.
    I mentioned size and weight and it's unfortunate that all of the EF-M Viltrox lenses are the same size and weight. Giving up my tiny lightweight 22mm would be hard even if the Viltrox 23mm is faster/better. It's just to large and heavy. The argument for the Viltrox is easier when comparing with the Sigma 56mm though since it's already a heavy lens. I went from an adapted 50mm f/1.8 to the Sigma. The Sigma is 10mm shorter, 5mm smaller in diameter but 20 grams heavier. In the end not much of a difference but a million times nicer to use. The Viltrox gains another 12mm in length but the weight is similar.
    BTW, I like the giant Sigma rubber focus ring over the all metal knurled rings of the Canons. I didn't think I would but I prefer it now. And the tiny focus ring on the EF 50mm STM was just silly.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  3 года назад

      Yeah, the Viltrox lens is definitely a nice value option. As far as I can tell the aperture reset focus shift thing is fixed since v1.0.7 or v1.0.8, at least on the M50 and M5. There is a new v1.1.0 firmware I haven't tried out yet.

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams 3 года назад

      @@ScottJWaldron The fact that there are active updates to the Viltrox is encouraging. I think if I had an M50 I'd also like the aperture ring since that camera only has one programmable dial. Could you effectively use aperture priority using the ring and then the M50's camera ring for exposure compensation? It wouldn't work for shutter priority but would make full manual mode more useful on the M50 too because you could set the ISO to 100 and use the aperture ring for aperture and the one camera ring for shutter.
      The aperture ring would have limited usefulness on the M5, M6 or M6II though as those cameras have plenty of dials.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  3 года назад

      I just tried it. Yeah, you can put the M50 into aperture priority with the aperture ring in a manual setting while using the camera's dial to adjust exposure compensation (as long as ev compensation is highlighted). The biggest negative for me is that the lens ring doesn't have hard stops (it's electronic adjustment as well).

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams 3 года назад

      @@ScottJWaldron Yes, no hard stops for the rare time that you'd use it with video. I think it would have been better with stops so you wouldn't have to look at the lens. If you twist the aperture ring does the aperture number update in the EVF? If so then maybe it would be fine.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  3 года назад

      Yeah, the camera shows the current aperture selected. I assume its some type of optical sensor in there. They probably could have easily added clicks.

      @ScottJWaldron  5 месяцев назад

      @@FathirNabil-xm4ke My favorite was the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 for EF-M, but it depends on how you want your photos to look. I personally think longer focal lengths are most pleasing for people photos. Set your kit lens to 30 or at its longest focal length to find out what you prefer. Keep in mind the kit lens is limited to 45mm so 56mm will provide a more narrow field-of-view.
