    Excellent video!
This style of painting has been in use in the hobby for 50-odd years with acrylic paint, inks and with oils. (Been in the hobby since 1972.) The fantasy and sci-fi gamers are just now catching up to the Historical wargaming, large-scale miniatures, and plastic model worlds.

Sorry i missed this one somehow. Im sure if you were to ask Napoleon about how he wanted his miniature painted, he would insist on pure gold leaf only. The only thing wrong with contrasting paints was that RUclips master painters kidnapped them and relabelled them as paint your own studio quality figurines at home. They simply were not meant to do this. So know wonder the disappointment in them. If anything, they're more like convenience food, quick and satisfying. I have painted an entire desert army in a weekend, so they work as described. Because they're all about contrast, the smaller the scale, the better they look. Ive never been a brand buyer. Instead, I buy shades of colour across the brands. This is because i don't like mixing paints for my layers. Mostly because in a year or two, I might want to add more units to an army, and this way, I get exact colour matches. There was an old rule that as you come up through the ranks, so must the quality of your finished paintwork. As you've stated here, nearly all acrylics happily mix together. However, simply because I've never had to, I would test mixing water-based acrylics with alcohol based acrylics. Also, most ranges of contrasting paints have a medium to make your normal acrylics behave more contrasting paints. Im still to try out these mediums. Like most things about painting, it's more about learning or adjusting techniques. Another great video.
