    This is very educative especially as I was stuck with a simple analog cable connection from Macbook Pro [mid 2012] direct to an input on the preamp. My older DAC does not offer USB nor HDMI inputs. I had not realized that the headphone out doubles as a Mini Toslink optical out! Have just ordered a suitable cable and am waiting for it to arrive and hopefully be able to connect the Mac directly to my DAC. Thanks again.

    I didn't even catch it as a presented option; I watched the vid again and realized that you did include it, I apologize for being so hasty in saying what I did. Yeah, I know what you mean in any case; I've used that method (speaker jack-to-aux on stereo) for my computer's audio pretty much as long as I've had it (consider my Aux stereo switch as my 'computer speakers' ^_^). As fidelity goes, I'm quite happy with what I do with it, but I have no business speaking for anyone else. :) Thanks again!

    This is certainly a solution and featured as option number 1 in the video. If you find the audio quality satisfactory and don't mind hearing every sound the computer makes through your audio system (without adjusting your computer's audio settings), it's a great value-oriented solution. For greater sonic fidelity and performance, a USB connection to an external DAC will offer a significant performance upgrade over the Digital to Analog Converters built-into most computers. If your receiver does not offer HDMI, then you will not be able use this connection. If you simply want audio, you could use a digital audio output (optical, coaxial) if your computer offers one. If not, you would be limited to the analog audio output or headphone jack for a physical connection. You could also use a wireless USB digital to analog converter (NuForce Air uDAC). If you have a desktop and the video card in it only has HDMI output, then that was meant to go to a monitor. In this case, you would have to use one of those other ways to get audio out of it. Laptops have monitors built in so the HDMI output can be used for just audio so you can send it to a receiver. Feel free to call for additional assistance: 800.315.0030--Crutchfield

    Love when I hear about "cheap" cables and "better quality" cables. I've used them both and there's not a world of difference between the two.
    Audiophiles like to convince themselves that there is and I find that hilarious.

    • @garmit61
      @garmit61 6 лет назад +9

      Jason Duhamel better cables make a difference in better audio equipment. If you have a cheapo amp the cable can’t make it sound good. But the quality of amps has improved dramatically over the years and as most of the input is digital they’ve been developed with that in mind. So, if you have a good audio system it should be better with decent cables. Personally I don’t think you can beat the sound from a decent valve amp but each to their own.

      i have no idea (yet) as to what changes the sound, but i bought a silver-plated copper cable not from audioquest (2.5mm) to replace the headphone's stock cable (3.5mm) and the change in sound was immediately noticeable. now, some say the myth is the balanced vs unbalanced headphone out, and some say the myth is the cable (some say both). but all i can say is at least one of them is making a difference, so at least one of them is not a myth. i haven't gotten to testing which one is the myth yet though, as i don't have an adapter to plug them in the same output.

      The guy advertises "better" digital cables. Yes there will be a difference in the jack cable because its analog and the sound "goes" trough it. In the digital cables (usb, hdmi) all that goes trough it is 0 and 1 signals. Theres no reason other than looks and durability to buy more expensive digital cables

    Despite some of the comments here, I feel this was a very informative video :) However, I am having trouble connecting my laptop to my stereo via: HDMI cord. I can connect to my TV quite easily and play music, but I am wanting a better quality sound. When I connect the HDMI cord to my laptop and stereo, I go to my control panel, hardware and sound, sound and onto playback... But my stereo does not show up, I am using a windows 8 ASUS laptop, and trying to connect to a PANASONIC stereo system. Do I need anything else to accomplish this task, or need to follow additional steps? I thank you for your video and would deeply appreciate a response. Again, thank you for your time and effort :)

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  9 лет назад

      It's difficult to say what the issue may me. Two devices connected via HDMI are supposed to "handshake" (EDID) so each knows what the other's capabilities are. If this is not happening, you may need to adjust the output options of the computer. Try starting with a basic 2-channel stereo setting (PCM), the lowest video resolution option and work your way up from there.
      You may also want to try connecting another device (Blu-ray player, cable/sat box, streaming video device, etc.) to the Panasonic's HDMI input to ensure it is functional.
      Hope that helps!

    My laptop has an hdmi port.
    Could I run this to the 40n hdmi arc port for high quality audio?.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Год назад

      The Marant'z HDMI ARC port needs to connect to an HDMI ARC or an HDMI eARC port. Typically, those are found on TV's and some projectors. That being said, we do not sell computers so there could be a chance that it too has the right type of HDMI port. If you have an HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port on your laptop, then yes, they can work together! If however, the HDMI port does not support the ARC/eARC technologies, it will not work.

      Unless the receiver you're using has an asynchronous USB (type-B) DAC input on it, the only way to connect your computer to your receiver would be via the 3.5mm headphone jack on your computer.
      You may want to consider adding a stand-alone USB DAC to your system if your receiver doesn't have one built-in. Here's a link to the USB DAC's we carry at Crutchfield: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc000/g_371850/Desktop-USB-DACs.html?tp=59340

    Not to come down on the poster, but (and this would just be for audio) what's wrong with buying an 0.5mm-to-RCA stereo cable for what...$5-10?...and connecting your rig's headphone/speaker jack to a tape or aux input on your stereo? I've had that set up for quite some time, and believe me, pumping out the tunes on my 300w x 2 Technics is nothing I'm unhappy with.

    I think toshlink is limited to 24 bit / 96 kHz only and not full high audio resolution of 24/192 and/or more. However, the USB 2.0 protocol (there's USB 3.0 now) is capable of handling 24 bit / 192 KHz resolution which technically speaking is better than Toshlink (provided, the quality of source, DAC, interconnects and speakers are of good quality also, to handle the audio spectrum and depth). Correct me if I am wrong please..

    What about laptops with the newer "combination" mic/headphone port ? ie one hole, not two. My own laptop is connected to my amp, which is linked to my floor speakers, in the way you demonstrate at the beginning- I have a headphone port then a 2nd port for a mic. But when I plug in the mini 3.5 cable to my son's new laptop, with the newer combination port, no sound comes from my floor speakers, it just comes out of his laptop. Will a USB audio jack solve the problem ?? I need to get a new laptop for myself and it HAS to be hooked to my stereo for proper sound, but every one I've looked at has this new combo jack system so I am concerned . Thanks.

      +Victoria Zasikowski I could be wrong as I'm not an expert on computers, but you may need to go into sound settings and make that output for speakers. Also, you may want to go into the sound settings to make sure the audio is being directed to the output and not just the internal speaker. However, getting a USB headphone amp/DAC will tell the computer that you want to send the audio to the amp/DAC and bypass the need to check both of those settings. This will allow you to get audio from any computer with an open USB port no matter the other connections on it. When using the analog output of the computer (commonly, a 3.5mm minijack), the digital to analog conversion takes place in the computer using it's DAC. When using a digital output (optical, USB, HDMI), the digital to analog conversion is handled by an external DAC. External DACs will generally provide much better performance and sound quality than using a computer's built-in DAC.For additional assistance and personalized recommendations, feel free to contact us directly: bit.ly/2jBGHPp Hope that helps.--Crutchfield

    Hello! I have a question. I have bought a cheap mini amplifier so as to work with my old passive speakers and I want to connect them to my PC. The problem is that the amplifier wants energy (power source 12V) and after connecting together with PC it provides ground loop buzz.... How can I avoid that? I hope it won't damage anything... Tried with Jack to Jack cable, RCA splitter to Jack. Also, the amplifier has a USB port (not yet tried), which I don't know if it's gonna work directly in PC USB, or it'd require a driver....
    Thanks

      That's a tough one and we doubt we will be able to give you a definitive answer. We do know that properly connecting an audio output on a computer to an audio input on a stereo does not cause damage. Using the wrong cable or connecting to an output instead of an input on the stereo could cause issues.

But, shouldn't I be using the blue output port on the p.c.? With or without the computer, the new boombox makes sound. Boombox has speakers in it. That blue port is just confusing. When using the analog auxiliary audio input on your boombox or powered speakers, you would connect to the computer's headphone or "speaker" analog audio output. hi steve - so what is the best way to connect my iphone or ipad to my home stereo which has a Denon PMA-720AE integrated amplifier with network amongst other input options - any idea, please as i'm struggling?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  10 лет назад +1

      It appears your Denon is a model released in the UK. While we have several options for your application, we do not ship internationally. At the very least, you can check with the equipment manufacturers to see if they are available in your region (If so, they may have a different model nomenclature).
      Having said that; iPod/iPhone/iPad-specific solutions can vary based on which version of each product you plan to use. For older generations that use Apple’s 30 pin Dock connector, the Arcam drDock is a great option: bit.ly/1fdWNDg This dock offers a nice design that can accommodate the varying chassis sizes of iPods, iPhones, & iPads. The buit-in DAC bypasses the device’s internal DAC offering better sound quality & dynamic performance. You can connect the RCA outputs to an available input on your Denon, connect the USB port to your computer synching the device, and connect the HDMI output to your television for any video content from the devices. This dock is compatible with iPod classic, iPod touch (1st through 4th generation), iPhone (up to the 4s), & iPad (1 & 2).
      For even greater connectivity options & performance, you may want to consider the Arcam irDAC: bit.ly/1ctFH18 This model upgrades to a Burr-Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC & uses a USB port for connection to compatible devices. As a result, this version works with nearly every iDevice by using the 30 pin or ‘Lightning’ to USB cable that came with your iPod/iPhone/iPad. You can even connect your WindowsPC or Mac for playing digital music files directly from your computer.
      Another option would be to add a Network Music Player like the Denon DNP720AE: bit.ly/1j77pK2 When connected to your home network (Eithernet or Wi-Fi), the player can stream digital music files from computers on your network & from online music services (Pandora, Rhapsody, 12,000 Internet Radio stations, etc.). While you can physically connect your iDevices to the Denon’s USB port for playback & charging, this model also supports Apple’s Airplay allowing you to stream audio wirelessly from iOS devices (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad) on the same network.

      a dac is a digital to analog converter
      when you have a song stored on you're computer it is saved in a binary code(1 and 0)
      to get a sound out of these numbers you need to convert them into a analog signal(works with voltage, like a lamp, increased voltage means brighter light)
      the dac just converts the digital to a analog signal(often with very high quality)

      @@crutchfield A headphone amp is really not in the same ballpark as a McIntosh (any older model), or crown DC300a, etc). Headphone amps don't have a lot of headroom..but they serve their use in multichannel recording in a studio. You did give me an idea,. I have a small 2 ch. steinberg da/ad converter (studio leftover) I did not think of trying (almost forgot I had it,.....most of my converters are 8 channel and hardwired into the studio). Thanks for pointing me where you did. I am sure I can get something fairly useable now.

    PC to flat screen via VGA, happy with that, now replacing cheap 5.1 surround that
    worked great from headphone jack. bought improved speakers, need amp, buy
    pioneer but it wont give true surround from analog in. So I hook up new laptop
    to it, HDMI, to see if that does it.. no joy. Entertainment PC has no HDMI out.
    but does have USB 3.
    what am I doing wrong? Thanks 4your time.

      The Pioneer receiver is not likely to support 5.1 decoding via USB so, you'll need to establish either an HDMI or digital audio (optical/coaxial) connection from the PC to the receiver.
      If the HDMI did not work from the laptop; it may be because the audio output options of the computer were not configured properly.

      If your computer has a Display Port (DP) you can use a DP to HDMI adapter. DP carries multi-audio channels and should work. Over a year for a response - I hope this is what you found.

      Not sure what you mean by that. You want to connect a computer to your car subwoofers? Depending on the connectivity of your in-dash stereo (aux input_, you may be able to connect a computer as an external audio source.

    what is a DAC?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  8 лет назад +1

      A digital-to-analog converter (or DAC) transforms digital bits of information into music that you can listen to. There's a tiny DAC inside your smartphone/MP3 player and another one in your computer's sound card; however those tend to be of lower quality than a separate outboard DAC.
      An outboard DAC decodes the digital bits in your music files with greater precision than the one in your device. And it bypasses your device's built-in audio output circuitry, resulting in cleaner, more accurate sound quality.
      You can view a full selection of DAC's on the Crutchfield site here for more info: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc000/m_308950/Digital-to-Analog-Converters.html

      There is software out there that will let you make a digital copy of CD's and some turntables have USB ports so the same can be done with albums.

      We have an article that will help cover exactly what a DAC does and things to look for in them depending on your use of it. Here's the link to that article:

    Who keeps perpetuating this Toslink crap? It's a horrible cable, does not like distances and easily breaks inside. The coax is so much better. Most people also don't understand about DAC's and figuring out which device has the better DAC. Since we only are able to listen in Analog, sometimes depending on the computer and sound card the regular RCA cable is the best if you are not interested in home theater but just good 2.0 stereo sound. Many low end receivers have low end DACS and the chances that your computer DAC is better is high. Plus the Toslink sounds worse the longer the cable.

    I do rather wonder how people have the nerve to create videos like this. It is clealy designed to wow those with no comprehension of technical matters - and that's fine - but surely the responsibility to not talk bollocks is that much greater.
    Gold will improve a connection. It has no actual impact on sound quality. Gold is soft and will quickly wear away on connectors that are repeatedly reinserted. Cables are the biggest concern - all the florid rubbish about cable quality gushes out like vomit from a drunk.
    Believe it or not, the layman really can understand sample rates, quantisation noise etc when explained by somebody who knows what they are talking about and who chooses not to patronise them.
    Sadly, every video I have checked today to simply identify the full specs of some audio DACs, hidden from view by the manufacturers, demonstrates the degree of technological deception endemic on RUclips.
