      The Sony DVD/radio sound system doesn't have the optical just the RCA red and white. Yellow for the video which is in the back of the TV. As for the Android box it has HDMI, 3.5m av slot like a phone. And the SPDIF. I have a splitter from a 3.5m headjack to a red and white on the sound system. I have sound and video coming from tv with HDMI for and Android box. I just don't have sound from tv to sound system.

      Steve, I am planning a new TV purchase. This video was helpful, but I do have a question. You mention in the set up process the TV speakers need to be turned off to enable to the digital optical output. Is this required with all of these newer sets? Currently, I have the audio outputs connected to a high end vintage audio system which we only use some of the time. We also have the regular audio from the TV available. Is that still possible?

    Thanks for making this video.I had already purchased a converter & was able to connect it to my smart TV in 5 minutes with your help. I have an old amplifier connected to boxes that have a excellent sound & did not want to have to purchase a soundbar.
    €23.18 for a converter or €300 upwards for a soundbar with the kind of quality I prefer especially for music is financially fantastic and more environmentally friendly.So thank you Steve🙏🏾

    You can also use an ARC extractor, which works exactly the same, however uses one of the TV's HDMI ports as an output, and connects it via the converter turning it into L/R wires for your audio system, but with the advantage of allowing the TV's remote to adjust the volume

    Very well explained. 👍
    However, I wish all devices still could have analog outputs because an adapter which needs a power supply of it's own is a bit awkward. Of course the benefit of optical output is that it is not galvanic connection so it for example helps preventing ground loops between audio devices.

So I’m going to use this to allow us to adjust the volume on the couch. I was going to use the “Dayton Audio WBA51 Multi-Room Wi-Fi Streamer with AirPlay and Spotify Connect” but it’s $80. Great suggestion. I am looking to use this with a Samsung TV and struggling with the hassles of Bluetooth convertors. Will this provide audio to standard 3.5MM headphones like I use with my older Iphone, or does it need a separate power source?

    • @TechSteve
      @TechSteve  4 года назад

      It will not power headphones, only line level inputs

    3 years back, to get a better sound, I connected my TV to a set of 6 external, powered speakers, via the TV 3.5mm headphone socket. Seems to work OK, but I have always wondered if using the optical cable output from the TV through "some sort of digital to analogue converter" into my external speakers, would produce a better sound. This video was just what I was looking for. However, scrolling through some recent posts below, it seems that the TV headphone output socket is doing that already.....so I won't improve the audio quality by going down the optical output/DAC route. Is that correct?

    • @TechSteve

      It works but a HDMI ARC on a sound bar is so much better and cleaner

    My daughter has a 10 year old 60” Sharp Aqous tTV in her room. I bought her the Sony STRDH190190. She loves it with her Sony tower speakers. She asked me to hook it up to her TV or PlayStation for stereo sound while gaming or watching movies with her friends. The TV doesn’t have the 2 RCA jacks just the video 1 and video 2 which won’t work. The TV & PlayStation has an optical out. Can I use an optical out to analog converter to make this work? Thanks for any help. I only have a week left to go to Best Buy and exchange it for one that will work.
