Hi Mimi. A couple of questions: Was the trouble code erased after the sensor was replaced? If not, was the vehicle driven after the sensor was replaced? I ask because if the sensor was replaced but the vehicle was not driven due to not having current registration, then the ecm (computer) did not have a chance to cycle. Also, maybe you have different trouble code. Have you checked and verified you currently have code p0705?
Good Job! Question? I have a 1995 Q45. Sometimes wont start. Nothing. No starter movement. Just silent when moving the key. I move the shifter from P to D1 back to P. Nothing. I got out and tapped the side of the automatic transmission close to the flywheel with a hammer 5 times, under the drivers side door. Then she starts normal. Do you think its the NSS or the starter. The starter sounds strong when it cranks. Have you ever heard of this?
My name is Thomas, I am buying a 2001 Nissan Maxima, it will not shift into overdrive. I just got done watching your video so with the key in the ignition, foot not on brake it will shift out of neutral but will the inhibitor also cause it not to6 shift into overdrive ?
Hello. Great info, thanks. I have a 2004 Nissan Xterra V6 3.3L and it is only starting in Neutral most days. Also, I am not getting any CEL or codes, is that typical? It won't crank at all, unless I change to Neutral; sometimes, jiggling the shifter into Park does it, but Neutral is a no-fail. The dealership guy said he's 90% sure it's the pnp switch, but I have no trouble codes. So, I bought the pnp switch but have no idea how to replace it, or get to it. Can you offer instructions on how to reach it and replace it? Is it as easy as removing and adding the new one? Meaning, once you're there, is it just a remove-add? How do you reach it effectively enough without removing the darn transmission? Thanks 👍
No problem. The neutral switch will only allow the vehicle to crank in either Park or Neutral. Replacing the switch is straight forward. I'll upload a diagram on my pinterest & facebook page showing where the switch is located. The diagram will also show how to test the harness connector. (To verify power is getting to the neutral switch.) Hope this helps. Cheers.
Idk if you still respond to this video but I replace the switch now my car works perfectly in Drive and reverse sometimes neutral I can put my car in park but it’s like I have to apply force to put in park any suggestions what could be the cause of that? I still get the code for this sensor even tho it been replaced. Thanks Car is - 2012 Altima coupe
Great video On a 2001 maxima, my son, calls me saying it will not start. Starter was just replaced few weeks ago. It was the starter because I had to tap it to get it to start last time it did stuff like this but I could hear it trying to turn. This time I told him to take it out of P and put it in N then back in P. Then try to start car. And that did it. It started . I told him what was going on and that I thought he hadn’t put in in P completely. No P0705 code on my code reader. But I will keep an eye on it. Good video for reference if I need to replace it .
Thanks very much for the thorough video, helped me replace the switch on my 1997 Nissan Maxima, successfully solving my intermittent starting issues (fingers crossed).
@@thevittles6634 Hi John, no it ended up being an issue with the aftermarket starter working intermittently. I returned it and replaced it with another and that resolved it.
Just wanted to let you know the 2003 Infinity QX4 4 wheel drive is completely different. The NSS is located under the car on the side of the transmission. The connections are further toward the back of the car and very difficult to route the wiring. The factory wiring is run with other wiring in a harness and difficult to route the new wiring in the existing group of wires. Suggest using the new wires as a seperate bundle.
hi, great video dude, question ? I have a 2002 Nissan maxima and the key won come out , bot the car starts ok, but the only thing the key wont turn all the way off so I can take the key out , question / could it be the safety switch?
Got a QX60 hybrid it probing wires from IPDM P or N position show B+ and other position at O volts. So switch is good. Since it has the code could it possible be a bad module? The hybrid powertrain control module has the code P0701 and TCM had the code P0706. I still need to scan IPDM see if it’s has code as well related to range sensor. I may also need to scope CAN pattern if they change when I switch position. Don’t know if that will help. Problem is engine will not start but the car seem to go into ready mode since the green car icon shows but it’s flashing though indication of problem then goes into key in not ready mode after about 30 seconds or so
This might be an odd questions but would this cause the radio's screen to stay black? When shifting from park to reverse there is a moment where the screen goes black before the rear camera is active. It seems like my radio is stuck between this position. This was an intermittent issue. It was black for a month or so and all the sudden came back. Now it is black again. The radio still functions as normal.
Ok, i have a 96 Nissan Sentra. It would start sometimes just fine and out of nowhere it would not start, after looking over the car and with some friends advice i unplugged the wire harness from the neutral safety switch and plugged it back in, it worked fine for about two months with some misses here and there.. Well now it wont crank at all even when i go through the gears! So i bought a new switch today, question. Can i just take the old one off and bolt the new one on? Is there a trick to it
We are getting a P0705 code from the Check Engine light. Is this sensor the problem? Our reverse lights are extremely dim and the car won't go past 60 miles an hour. Our car is a 2000 Infiniti G20.
Adria Tate Not likely. The main function of this sensor is to make sure the vehicle only starts in park or neutral. If you try to start your while the shifter is in reverse or a forward gear this sensor will not allow it. Only the reverse lights are dim? Any other trouble codes?
tks for your vids very helpful. my son has a 95 sentra manual trans. the clutch pedal has a rubber or plastic grommet? that has disintegrated broke whatever, which depresses the safety switch when the pedal is pushed to the floor to start the car. what is that called and I have rigged it with a rubber tube, but cannot find anyone that has a clue what I am talking about and the nearest dealer is an hour away. the break light switch grommet also missing and appears to be the same piece ..
One day this week, when it was really hot, my 1994 Nissan truck would not start in park (after it had been driven for over an hour). It would start in neutral. Does heat have an effect on the neutral safety switch? When it was cool it was fine.
Hi. Good video. I was wondering, my kid's 1995 Nissan died at the local 7/11. Actually, he drove it there but when he came out, it wouldn't start. He has had an engine check light on for sometime now also. It seemed to be having long cranking issues leading up to this current problem. I was wondering, does the faulty neutral safety switch allow it to crank at all? Or does the key just turn with no response?
All right, but on your panel, there is no light of indicator A/T. I have such problem (Infiniti I30 A33, 2000). A/T has all gears, but in reverse gear lights dont work. What i need to do? thanks
hey man, i have a question i was hoping you could answer for me. im prettymuch completely sure that this sensor is my problem so thats awesome, and thanks for showing me how to fix it. but i was wondering what would cause this sensor to get all fucked up in the first place. Could i be dealing with some kind of major issue thats going on as a pre-cursor to this switch/sensor thingy begining to function?
+titty soup I don't think it's a precursor, especially for this vehicle. Sometimes they just wear out due to age and sometimes they just need a little adjustment.
Hey Kay. Wearing gloves isn't for every one. I wear them to keep the oil & grease off my skin and from getting under my nails. But if you prefer not to wear them that's cool. It's really a personal preference. Cheers.
So i replaced the neutral switch in my 1993 infiniti g20 thanks to your wonderful video, thank you, and still my car will not start in Park only in neutral, which is what it was originally doing and why i replaced it. I was wondering if you had any ideas on this? thanks again for the video
Hi Crystal. You can try adjusting the shaft that moves the neutral safety switch. I'll upload diagrams to my facebook & pinterest pages tonight. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Hi, I just changed the TPS and the Neutral Safety Switch to my 2001 Infinity I30. When I changed them everything seemed to work just fine, until I stepped on the gas and now it jumps when the RPM's get to 2 and won't go any faster just keeps jumping. I was told to turn the ignition switch on but don't start the car five times to reset the computer. On the sixth time I actually turned the car on but now I have this problem. Can you please let me know what I need to do??? Thanks and your video was such a great help...
hi i have a 2004 nissan pathfinder armada . my shift is lock, the reverse lights dont work, also the brake light dont work either... do you think is the neutral safety switch....? thanks
Hi Fermin. These problems are not associated with a faulty neutral safety switch. You most likely have a problem with the shift lock solenoid. You can test the shift lock solenoid using a power source and a multi-meter. I can add diagrams to my facebook account if you want to tackle the problem yourself.
If the car cranks then you don't have any problems with the neutral safety switch. I would check the spark plugs and ignition coils. I have a video showing how to replace spark plugs and I identify the ignition coils as well.
You won't have this exact part because you have a manual transmission. Manual transmissions use a back up lamp switch. I'll post a picture to my pinterest page (under schematics) showing what the part looks like and where it's located on your vehicle. However, if you're able to crank the vehicle this will not be your problem. How are the spark plugs? I have a spark plug replacement video if you need help removing and checking the plugs.
Well, it comes down to either spark or fuel. If spark plugs are good next thing to check are the coil packs. You can do an ohm reading with a multi meter. It's a simple test. I can upload a diagram to my pinterest page if you want to tackle the job.
I have a Nissan Murano 2007 that was in a small collision and it turned off , after that it won't start again only lights on dash. I hear about security switch. Any help? Will appreciate
Yes, we replaced the switch twice and drove it after -it would take a few rides and the check engine light would come back on. You're right I should check if that code pops up currently. Hopefully I can next week -Thanks for reading:)....
I have an 2000 Infiniti i30t, I know I need a front catalytic converter. But I was driving yesterday and all of a sudden it started sputtering when I would punch the gas to speed up. If I am at the light, when it turn green if I push it it will sputter, if I take it easy it would be good until it gets to about 40mhp. Any suggested diagnoses?
So I had the P0705 code, changed the switch and still getting the code. I've drove around for a week. The code won't even erase on the OCDII (tried three different ones). What do you think could possibly be wrong. No other codes are showing and the engine light never came on for this code. Just failed emissions because of it.
Great video, question, my infiniti won't start because the security light is on or flashing, do you kno any suggestions how i can resolve this problem?? Thanks
Hi Crzyn..The answer to your question is no. The vehicle won't crank at all if the neutral safety switch is faulty. The best thing to do is get a scan tool and see what code(s) are coming up. Take a look at my 'Nissan Maxima Check Engine Light Fix' video for help. Let me know if you have any questions regarding what code(s) come up. Cheers.
If you have access to hoist of can get your car high enough off the ground go from the bottom as just need to remove bottoms tray and this switch is also adjustable so if there is a dead spot like the one I’ve just been working on if you and crack bolts and turn to adjust
Have 89 300zx that I got started a week ago in my garage after sitting a few months. Using a jumper battery, it turned over slowly but fired up. It sat and ran at idle rpm for about an hour. RPM got sluggish and noticed while sitting in driver seat that the volt meter dropped, but was able to hit the gas and rev and the volt meter shot back up to 13 - 14 volts. It did it again and wasn't able to catch it and it conked out. Went to Sears and got a new battery and installed. Went to turn the key (clutch is depressed) and all the warning indicators lit up, tested the head lights and they came on, then went to start it up and nothing, not even a clicking noise. Never have had starter problems at all and was wondering if it could be the clutch safety switch?? Do these safety switches just up and quit??
+Danny G Seems to coincidental. I'd start by making sure power is getting to the starter. Jump to 6:38 in this video. I show on how you can verify if power is getting to the starter - ruclips.net/video/q8n9OZfwKrM/видео.html
Hi, just purchased a 1999 i30. I am getting problems starting the car. it will go to the ON position and not crank at all. All the lights are visible Checked battery, starter, and fuel. All go. Tried starting in neutral and nothing. I dont believe its the Neutral safety. It will run after flipping the key and playing with the locks. It runs fine too. Have a feeling it could be the key? is that even possible.
Hey Migue. It's on the driver's side of the vehicle. There's a compartment to the left of the steering wheel. I'll post a picture on my facebook account. Take a look. Cheers.
Give me you thought I have a Infiniti i30 change neutral switch and now when driving I take my foot off gas it continues at same speed what do you think
I have a 1998 i30 just changed starter an alternator.... but still have starting issues....if sits for 20 min it will crank but want start back to back is it the ignition switch
I have P0705 error on 1996 Nissan Maxima, V6 3000 (same engine your working on) could this sensor cause the car to stall when coming to a stop? Or even just going through the gears from P, N, R, D and can produce it. It starts right back up, runs perfect until you start going through the gears again. Dies within 10 sec. Thanks for your thoughts. Oh, P0705 is the only error on OBD ll
DrcJr77 The sensor is designed to prevent the vehicle from starting in any gear besides park and neutral. Any other issues with your car, besides the stalling?
no, you can start the car and it runs fine. cycling through the gears P,R,N, D and then stopping in either R or D the car dies within 10 seconds. Starts right back up. I did remove and clean the sensor, didn't help. But there was a lot of wear on the contacts. 286,000 miles on car
Gotcha. The down side with stalling vehicles is it can take a lot of time to find the problem. I'd check basic things, PCV valve (I have a video for this done on a '97 Maxima), how's the idle speed?, ignition related (plugs, coil packs - I have videos on these as well done on a '97 Maxima), EGR valve (I have a video on this), also try cleaning the throttle body. YOu can buy cleaner to clean it out. With that many miles I'd also change the plugs if you they haven't been replaced for some time. Just search under my page. I have a ton of videos for all of these concerns. Good luck!
I'll check out your vids for the PCV and the EGR valve. What I've already done is Clean Throttle body, Replaced Idle Air Control Valve. Replaced Knock Sensor, Cleaned Neutral Safety Switch. Idle seems to be a bit high when cold (1500 rpm), and as it warms up it idles at 1000 rpm in P or N. When in gear it's at 750 and then dies. After I cleaned the Neutral Safety switch the P0705 has not come back. Nothing is showing on OBD. If you can think of anything else besides the PCV or EGR after this info just let me know. Thanks for your replies. I'll let you know what I find out about the PCV and EGR
Thanks for this video. I've been having sporadic issues with my 97 Maxima not starting. I turn the key and nothing happens. On occasion I could shift it into neutral and start it. I thought it was the neutral safety switch. I changed it this weekend, but still have the issue. I basically end up taking the key in and out and it will finally start. Do you think it's the ignition assembly instead? Thanks
Hi Bryan. My guess is you may have a problem with a harness connector leading to the inhibitor switch. There's a test you can perform to check if the harness is working correctly. I've written myself a reminder to shoot a video this weekend for your problem. I'll post a vid shortly. I'm assuming your vehicle has an automatic transmission?
CarsNToys Just curious if you had more information on the harness connector you mentioned. I couldn't find any information about it in my Chilton book. Thanks
Hi Bryan. I'll post schematics on my pinterest page this morning. I did shoot a video as well but I still need to edit and post. In the mean time I'm sure the schematics will help. Cheers.
CarsNToys Thanks for posting the schematics. Just to make sure I understand, those are the connectors that are part of the neutral safety switch, correct? Are you saying that the problem could be on the side that receives the connectors from the switch? Thanks
If the weather is good this weekend I will definitely make a video showing how to test this valve and power getting to the valve. I'll send you a message when the video is posted.
HELP I have the error code P0705 with my 2000 Infinity G20 I had the park/neutral switch replaced but the Check Engine light is still on (has been for a while now, runs fine but haven't been able to drive it for half a year for registration purposes). Is it a sensor? I have no money to try and find out what the problem is anymore, and no one wants to help. I was hoping you can. Thank you for reading:)

I'm getting a code on my Nissan 240 SX 96 and the code is to po705. which is neutral position switch and I have a manual car not an automatic. Need help
David Duan Jr The switch is located on the transmission. Send me an email at contact@carsntoys.net and I'll send a schematic showing where the switch is. It's an easy test to verify if the switch is bad. You'll need to do a continuity test. I'll have a video posted this weekend showing how to perform this test if you're uncertain.
Yes, if your Altima has an automatic transmission, it's very similar. (You can also access the sensor from underneath the car.) I can add some diagrams on my facebook page if that helps. Cheers.
Been watching your videos on the 5th gen for years now YOUR ARE THE MAN

I have an 2000 Infiniti i30t, I know I need a front catalytic converter. But I was driving yesterday and all of a sudden it started sputtering when I would punch the gas to speed up. If I am at the light, when it turn green if I push it it will sputter, if I take it easy it would be good until it gets to about 40mhp. Any suggested diagnoses?
Hi Edward. Is the check engine light on? Catalytic Converters can clog and cause the symptoms you're experiencing.
No problem, Geoff. I've uploaded the diagram to my pinterest account. Click on the schematics folder.
So I had the P0705 code, changed the switch and still getting the code. I've drove around for a week. The code won't even erase on the OCDII (tried three different ones). What do you think could possibly be wrong. No other codes are showing and the engine light never came on for this code. Just failed emissions because of it.
?did u find out what it was ? im having the ame issue please get back thank u
im confused
If you have to jump start call all the time and have a new battery and starter and alternator can it be this not going into park draining the battery
My electrical connections wiring is bad where can I buy a replacement
Great video, question, my infiniti won't start because the security light is on or flashing, do you kno any suggestions how i can resolve this problem?? Thanks
Oscar Galvan Sorry, Oscar. I don't have a lot of experience tooling around with security systems.
Do you have to put the car in neutral before starting this process?
Joel Colon Not on this vehicle. Sometimes placing the car in neutral makes it a tad easier removing the sensor.
Is it possible to get it from under the car?
Hi Crzyn..The answer to your question is no. The vehicle won't crank at all if the neutral safety switch is faulty. The best thing to do is get a scan tool and see what code(s) are coming up. Take a look at my 'Nissan Maxima Check Engine Light Fix' video for help. Let me know if you have any questions regarding what code(s) come up. Cheers.
What year?
All the lights are visible
Checked battery, starter, and fuel. All go. Tried starting in neutral and nothing. I dont believe its the Neutral safety.
It will run after flipping the key and playing with the locks. It runs fine too.
Have a feeling it could be the key? is that even possible.
Hi Ed. So on one side you can't turn the key pass the ON position but if you flip the key you can turn the ignition and crank the car?
Would this be the same on a Nissan versa?
My infinity isn’t showing the gears in the dash and isn’t starting with ignition switch could it be this?
how many neutral switch is on a car??? or more specifically on a nissan versa 2007
You have a fuel delivery problem. I would start by checking if the fuel pump is working correctly. If so, then check the injectors.
Hey Migue. It's on the driver's side of the vehicle. There's a compartment to the left of the steering wheel. I'll post a picture on my facebook account. Take a look. Cheers.
is it possible just to remove it from under the carriage? I see the opening and have a stand kit.
Yes. Here's a video using that technique: ruclips.net/video/r8QJX-MWkBU/видео.html
Give me you thought I have a Infiniti i30 change neutral switch and now when driving I take my foot off gas it continues at same speed what do you think
Lorry Taylor Sounds like a sticky throttle or the return spring is wearing out.
I have a 1998 i30 just changed starter an alternator.... but still have starting issues....if sits for 20 min it will crank but want start back to back is it the ignition switch
What kind of car?
CarsNToys greetings !! where is located the neutral safety swich of a pathfinder 2005 ? thanks ! for you help !
CarsNToys Yes, it has an automatic transmission. Thanks
Cheers.
CarsNToys
Thanks for posting the schematics. Just to make sure I understand, those are the connectors that are part of the neutral safety switch, correct? Are you saying that the problem could be on the side that receives the connectors from the switch? Thanks
If the weather is good this weekend I will definitely make a video showing how to test this valve and power getting to the valve. I'll send you a message when the video is posted.
would this also show a security switch? on dash
Good tip. That will also work. Cheers.
show me how to find and replace the neutral safety switch for a 1998 Nissan Frontier truck with standard transmission
Thanks for the video bud. What about park/neutral switch input circuit with a obd code p0850 for a nissan pathfinder 2006
Avi Ram go for the relay first
HELP
I have the error code P0705 with my 2000 Infinity G20
I had the park/neutral switch replaced but the Check Engine light is still on (has been for a while now, runs fine but haven't been able to drive it for half a year for registration purposes). Is it a sensor?
I have no money to try and find out what the problem is anymore, and no one wants to help. I was hoping you can. Thank you for reading:)
Got a 2005 Nissan Quest that will not start. Already replced crank and cam sensors....and it still will not start. Please help. Thanks
Could be a number of things. Check fuel and spark; fuel pump and ignition coils to start.
I have a 2000 nissan maxima 5 sp.. And it won't crank at all.. I was told it was the safety neutral switch.. Could that be true.
Delshawn Arnold Sure could be.
Hey does anyone know how to hook up or where they would have a description the safety switch and the cancel switch I did the 300zx tt swap manual conversion but I kept the auto harness there's power but none going to the starter
Sorry, Brent. I'm not following. What happens after the car sits for 20 minutes?
I’m taking my sensor out and the only thing that keep me is one of the two electric connectors that doesn’t lose . Is totally soldered , what I do.
Soo why go from the top down when the switch is already at the bottom where the transmission is? 👀
i have a 98 Max, that starts up fine in summer. But now in cold days I have to step on gas pedal for about 1 or 2 minutes before it idles by itself...I appreciate any tips
Is the check engine light on?
CarsNToys no
How do the spark plugs look? Have you done any maintenance on the car or did you recently purchase?
Did the plugs and coil packs last summer. plugs look good. runs great except for the cold start problem
Ok. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Any other problems?
Images are posted. Hope it helps. Cheers.
where is the nutral switch located on a 2002 Nissan frontier
Excellent! 👍
what year was this nissan?
Could this be the fix for Reverse functioning like Neutral?
TheWiseZenShaman Sounds like you need to adjust the neutral safety switch. Search under my page for 'how to test and replace the neutral safety switch'
my a33 cefiro not starting from the key an the park and drive switch not lighting at all and the gear not selecting and brakes light staying on please help
+Nigel Nanan Did you recently replace the igntion switch?
I have a 2011 versa and I can't get any info on the net nowhere about the location of the neutral switch. Is it a state secret or what? I see about all other models but my versa''s
Where did you end up finding the location for it?
Jonathan Regalado who said I did?
I'm getting a code on my Nissan 240 SX 96 and the code is to po705. which is neutral position switch and I have a manual car not an automatic. Need help
David Duan Jr The switch is located on the transmission. Send me an email at contact@carsntoys.net and I'll send a schematic showing where the switch is. It's an easy test to verify if the switch is bad. You'll need to do a continuity test. I'll have a video posted this weekend showing how to perform this test if you're uncertain.
Would that help where I can take my key out of the ignition
Will this drain your battery
Fantastic job!! very thoroug👌👌👍
thank you for your show
You're welcome. Cheers.
Yes, if your Altima has an automatic transmission, it's very similar. (You can also access the sensor from underneath the car.) I can add some diagrams on my facebook page if that helps. Cheers.
I have to change my PNP SENOR on 2013 Nissan Altima 👍🏾
Its the gearpostionsensor ,when you can see on the cluster how gear you use...
good job, sir.
Anyone know of a video on how to replace gear shift selector assembly on 08 infiniti g37? I can not find any.
