    I watched your fine video a year ago, I've been lazy and putting off fixing the NSS. I dug into it this morning after watching your video again. You sure were right, the hardest part of the job was disconnecting the wire and cutting the zip ties loose, I almost gave up. The rest was as simple as you made it seem. What a difference. Thanks for making these videos.

    Whoa!!!!!! Spot on. Took me about 2 hours total to do exactly what you said. Even down to the zip ties. Thanks so much!!!! Now my reverse light comes on again. Hahahahahahahaha. Better yet it cranks up. Wife is happy. All is great again. Oh yeah the way I tested it before I took it off I put the jeep in neutral and held the key in the start position. I jiggled the shift lever slightly back and forth. Boink!! It cranked right up. Had to be the switch. Thanks again!!!!!!!

    You are creative. I watched several clips to fix the malfunctions, but they are brief, and some do not address the important things, unlike you. You explained the boring details. Thank you, my friend, and I wish you success.

    Matt, Ty for making this video. I bought a 98 jeep Cherokee 4.0 and the reverse lights were not working and wouldn't start sometimes. It's the exact same part and when I pulled it out and opened it up, the copper pins and the one side wouldn't even move, after cleaning it just how you did and stretching the springs. Reinstalled it and everything works great now! I was so happy. Couldn't have done it without your vid. Thanks

      That is awesome. I have a question for you, I have a 93 jeep Cherokee sometimes my key fob will not unlock the system, I am not able to start the vehicle. Do you think it is a neutral safety switch issue ? Thank you

  • @DOLRED
    @DOLRED 9 лет назад +2

    Yep, MY 2002 Chev Tracker ZR-2 has the identical part. In my case you have to disconnect the Tranny Coolant Lines to access the NSS--no big deal, only a shotglass loss of fluid as well. Your video is super great!!!!. I overhauled the NSS and it cost me nothing. This, after putting up with no-starts; and no-starts with the remote start as well. I hesitated doing the work because of the limited access area where this switch is located. Today, BLACK FRIDAY, I got the courage and after 3 hours the work is done. Oh...it pays big rewards to pre-spray the nuts/bolts and connectors with BP Blaster to loosen them.....This is one of the few times I soaked something a day in advance--it works.

    This is an absolutely perfect write-up. I've been needing to rebuild my NSS for the better part of a decade and my Jeep finally forced me to do it today. I already had a general idea of how to do it, but this video really filled in some gaps and taught me a couple things as well. I accidentally broke the gasket that goes inside the unit and ended up putting a very light bead of silicone in the channel that the gasket sat in, making sure to keep it contained in the channel. Hopefully this doesn't present a problem in the future. Thanks a ton!

    Thank you for this helpful video. I did my NSS on my 2000 Cherokee 6cy 4-speed automatic in about 1hr 50min. My electrical connector was a bear to separate, the three zip ties were a bit difficult to get to, but the hard part was getting the NSS off of the transmission spindle where the large nut is. I actually cracked the plastic back of the NSS a bit. The dealer told me yesterday that it would be around $500 to replace mine. I did it for the cost of brake cleaner, some dielectric grease, and time. Thanks again!

    Thanks a ton! I was gonna shell out the $300 bucks or whatever it is to fix this but i found this video and spent 15 bucks on supplies and fixed it all up. Mine worked right in the middle adjustment perfectly after i cleaned it all up and greased it right. I love doing my own work and this was exciting to do so thank you again!

    I've cleaned this before years ago, but I recently had to replace my flywheel in the transmission and am now having code P0705 as you list in the description. I just remembered recently that the nut on it wasn't fully tightened on there and I tightened it back up and it shifted in the process. I think that's a problem I caused. I read where one person the Jeep Forum said you may have to adjust the position, and the best way to do it is get it backed up close to somewhere where you can see the lights turning off and on as you shift it around with the keys in the ignition in the On position. You have to center it up on the spot where the lights turn on and then lock it down. Thanks for posting the 0705 trouble code as that is something I wouldn't have identified as a NSS problem, especially since I accidentally bent the transmission shift cable in the process. I got it re-straightened and used some ingenuity to fab up something to keep the bent area from rebending. My vehicle wouldn't go into park until I fixed that.

  • @ExhibitTruth

    It worked just as you showed. The only thing I did different was instead of pulling the plug all the way through. (It was catching on everything.) I allowed the NSS to hang by it’s wires and disassemble it from under the vehicle. I cleaned it all up the way you did and reinstalled it. It took two tries adjusting the angle and now I have my reverse lights back. Saved me some money that can go elsewhere! Int the Jeep of course…

    After doing this myself I have some tips for others:
    1. you can do it *without removing it from the jeep* . instead of cutting the zip ties just dangle it and do the work. There is plenty of slack to do it, but even if not, just cut the one zip tie.
    2. careful *not to strip the threads* off of the shifter part when prying on it, I put very little pressure on it and managed to screw up my threads still. (it is aluminum and barely threaded on there, keep that in mind)
    3. *IF YOU LOSE A SPRING* like I did, good luck finding a replacement. What I ended up doing which I 100% recommend, is to get a spring from a pen/mech pencil and get a drill bit just barely bigger than the original spring hole in the NSS. Drill it out so the pen/pencil spring fits tightly without binding. Clip the spring to the correct length and put the cut side down in the hole(this part prevents the cut side of the spring from binding up on the copper piece. Problem solved, works great on mine. Also allows you to get as much pressure on the contacts as you desire, so if your springs are worn out this is also a good solution there.
    4. You may need a new gasket thing. Mine cracked apart like super brittle plastic when I opened it up, thanks Arizona heat and 27yrs. I dont know where to get one but I saw a different video where a guy had a replacement one so they are available somewhere. I may have to just use some silicone gasket idk.

    Dielectric grease doesn't promote conductivity in fact it does the opposite it prevents connection.

    • @rygilly32
      @rygilly32 2 года назад

      Love all the videos, but this post is correct. You should never put dielectric grease directly on contacts. Dielectric is a measurement a material's insulating properties. Dielectric grease is NOT conductive.

    awesome video matt! but if you need a quick fix you can put a piece of wire on the negative side of the starter relay and then ground it to the negative side of the battery. but be careful by doing this you are bypassing the NSS so you will be able start you car in drive and reverse

    I’ve got a 2005 Dodge Caravan with a key-on-no-crank-X-times-before-it-starts problem, with X usually ranging from 5 up to past 20, worse in cold temps, and what I saw here led me to try something along the lines I’ve seen suggested of moving the shift lever in various ways, but a bit different. I moved the shift all the way from left to right through PRND3L, back and forth back and forth back snd forth like I might be scrubbing the moveable contacts against the fixed contacts, possibly moving whatever interfering crud to some other less interfering locations. Anyway, right now it’s starting on the second try at worst, so far, and I’m convinced that switch is the issue.

    upon further investigation, i opted out of adding the amount of grease you added, because i believe that is why the springs began not functioning while being suffocated by to much grease. i added maybe 90% less id say. and scaled the actual spring contacts barely. and then being from a rust state, i opted to replace the hardware with stainless. thanks again

    I've been waiting for the longest for someone to make a video about this! I've been meaning to do this, just was worried about breaking it when taking it off as I've seen others do. My Jeep has two codes P0700 and P0743 and I'm hoping this along with some new fluid and TV cable adjustment will do it. Otherwise its off to replacing the shift solenoids.

    From my experience - be very careful when trying to pry it loose by taking a hold with the big nut. The threaded part is also a grip/claw, and its made of soft metal, easy to damage the thread.
    I cleaned the shaft with a wire brush, applied WD40 and was able to pry it loose with my fingers.

Since we have 68-71 degree weather here in Michigan, I'm gonna try cleaning my NSS before replacing it with the new one I bought. look underneath your vehicle on the passenger side of the transmission its just a little up in there along the hump of the transmission, as seen in the video it has a fan like shape to it, look for your transmission pan and feel along the lip of it and just a little above and you should run in to it, bit of a tight spot, not sure if this is really going to help you but i hope it does, also make note of what transmission you have four speed or three speed as there are little differences to make sure of

    Really nice video -- thanks. I don't think this was the problem on mine (different car and not so hard to remove) but this video helped me find that out.
    You mention at around 7:00 that you read somewhere to put the vehicle in Neutral when you remove it. In some cars, there are holes that line up in neutral that you use to align the cable arm (putting a bolt through them temporarily until you tighten the arm and cable).. The way yours is designed, it doesn't seem it would make a difference, but it is an important step on some cars..

    The first time I cleaned my NSS I used brake cleaner, and then used dielectric grease on the inside. After a couple of months it failed again. This time when I opened it up. I had corrosion on the copper contacts and some of the aluminum housing of the body looked to be eating away?? Anyways I re-cleaned but with electric parts cleaner, and regressed. I have had no problems with my NSS going on 6 months now. Not sure but I think the brake cleaner was eating away at it. So if you use it make sure to get it all evaporated away before you put it back together.

    Did you find a shaft seal or O-Ring to keep the road splash out of the NSS? The blackened old grease suggests dirt is getting into the switch.
    My wife's 1996 GC Ltd 4.0L just started with the no-start in park trouble. I plan to put a very thin coat of RTV silicone sealant around the case groove at the perimeter, but the "how" of sealing the shaft isn't so clear.

    Your videos have saved my jeep many a time. Going to see if this gets me back on the road now. Question how on earth did you change your shifter nob? That zombie one is awesome! I have the big T handle with the thumb button to switch gears, is that the one you had? How did you remove it?

    My Jeep is throwing a code P0705, I know it’s the NSS. Will cleaning it out fix the P0705 code and switch too?

    Hey thank you for posting I have a 2009 Chevy HHR with this issue. I do have a question do you recommend replacing the connector when replacing the NSS? Or can you just replace the NSS?

    I have a 1999 jeep with this issue, but it does not happen all the time. I replaced the starter, the starter relay and the battery (Which was bad). This is all I can think of. What say you?

    I need to attempt this on my 2000 Cherokee. One question.....does it matter what position the shift/transmission is in when you remove and install????

      BleepinJeep I performed this fix yesterday...here are the abbreviated results...
      locating and cutting 3 zip ties...the one near the top of the trans.fluid dip stick was easy the other 2 were PITA...but persistence paid off
      disconnecting the NSS harness.....super pain...due to age...a little gentle persuasion did the trick...
      applied parking brake, blocked all 4 wheels (for safety's sake) shifted into Neutral (still don't know why but that seemed to be the general consensus...if anyone can explain why I'd love to know)
      after that removal was easy using the screwdriver leverage method...cleaned....replaced....worked like a charm.
      Saved a ton of money...for some reason my mechanic didn't want to touch this...after doing it myself I don't know why.
      Oh ...almost forgot...total time = 3 hours....mostly because it was 20 degrees F out and I had to stop to take my kid to hockey.
      Thanks for the video!!!!

    is this the same for a 2006 jeep liberty sport, automatic? or am I barking up the wrong tree?
    Thanks for the video awesome, I just gotta make sure it works in my jeep too.
    TY.
    Then I can remove the switch and repair it.

    WOW... you just said something at 8:50 that has me thinking... so if that nut is too tight, you won't be able to move the shifter. I just swapped the AW4 with one from the junk yard that didn't have the NSS installed, so I swapped my old one. Now it won't shift out of park. I was thinking the interlock, but now I'm wondering about this. How much resistance can this have? I pulled on the shift lever pretty hard.

      Ok, thanks, I have problem starting it up, i have a new camsensor, cranksensor, coil, sparkplugs, sparkwires, relays and amps. The fuelpump works when i jump it where the relay sits, and then i have fuel all the way to the rail.. i have also switched relays but nothing. The jeep cranks but no spark and no fuel when i crank it.. and sometimes the horn honks 2times when i crank. I have searched for an answer and looked at almost Everything that comes in mind. I would be very thankful for your ideas! and excuse my bad English Writing, im just a simle Swede from the deep frozen forest

    My vehicle is stuck in park but the shifter moves back and forth no problem but I can also start the engine no problem in park or neutral so is it the problem? i've already changed out the tranny pan filter and torque converter fluid...and bought a new shifter assembly too to be sure.

    Question, I see that you used brake cleaner to clean it, but do you just wipe off the brake cleaner and let it air dry or rinse it with something? Any brake cleaner better to use than others on this?

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  10 лет назад

      Joel F Brake cleaner evaporates very fast, so just spray it on and flick it off and towel or air dry.

    I've got a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo I bought new with 145,000 miles. I've had problems twice when you turn the switch to start nothing happens it's as if you didn't have a battery, even the lights won't turn on, I have it towed and the mechanic installed a new starter. Could a dirty Neutral Safety Switch be the culprit?
