- Bowfin are a native species that rarely get the love they deserve. In this episode, bass phenom Oliver Ngy teams up with fly legend Blane Chocklett on Lake Champlain to get deep in the weeds on the importance of bowfin in the ecosystem. They’ll also test their mettle against what can be a challenging fish that punishes tackle and fights to the death.

This was my favorite of the 3 seasons I've got to be a part of. Bowfin are dope!
Oliver you ever come up to WA state ? If so let's do some salmon fishing I'm not a good fisherman but I got access to some great pacific coast rivers fishing on the reservations
@@jaimehernandez7435 made it up that way last in 2019 & fished some tribs on the Columbia for coho. Fun fishing!
Shame das boat weren’t in it though huh?
@@delmedico6804 Right
@oliver ngy, your killing it, I've been watching your channel now, That Rinella's bunch introduced you to me. Good job man.
Das boat needs to be fished in
Vermonster born an raised here this is awesome seeing VT get some recognition
Awesome. Bowfin are my favorite fish. I spend at least a few days each year targeting them specifically. Great to see them getting some respect in this episode. They are an underappreciated fish for sure.
Is it Das Boat OR Das canoe/kayak or what ever we bring with us?
Das Mothership this season
“Shhh is right! You shut your mouth when Blaine Chocklett is fly-fishing!!!” LOL!!!
you should see them with the NEON GREEN spawning colors they are out of this world.
Great episode. Love seeing the northeast and a new look at these species. I always appreciate the conservation message in Das Boat.
I was gob smacked when there was no catch and cook section of the show. quite possibly the first MeatEater episode in history when nothing was cooked up at the end of a successful hunt/fish.
Did you watch B side fishing? Didn't eat any fish when they fished for pike. Or the smallies episode of season 2. Small edit, they didn't eat the target species. They did catch and eat a northern
At least they didn’t eat bowfin. I don’t mind the eating meat. But don’t kill any muskies or bowfin.
Because Bow Fin tastes like ass. Real reason no one wants them
Not even close to the first. Even ignoring all the spinoff shows, the have been plenty of MeatEater episodes without a cook. I'm always disappointed when I watch one though. The cook is my favorite part.
Rinella has gone on at length about how much push back he's gotten for having hunting/fishing shows without a payoff at the end. He was adamant about portraying hunting and fishing realistically.
The first time I took my daughter out fishing on the kayak with me we caught a bowfin. Until then I had never heard of them. Super aggressive, awesome fight. Unfortunately it scared my daughter so bad she has never came back on the kayak with me.
My 3 year old loses her shit when paw(her grandpa) starts putting rods in the truck. She's reeled in two crappie already. Glad to see they are showcasing some female anglers, cause we are raising one! She can't eat to get out on the water.
My favorite fish to catch hands down.
I caught my first ever bowfin in Champlain but not just that it was so big I was in the news for it also! I didn’t know it was one of the best fisheries for bowfin but I’m not surprised
I'm so happy for season 10 part 1 Tomorrow
same
It's weird how they don't really fish out of Das Boat. Second week in a row
Kinda lost the spirit of the series
Same... no das boat no drama.. jumped the shark
@@griffinstanley4054 that’s true. There is no drama without it. Might as well just be a fishing show
@@pinhighdiscdyes definitely lost the spirit of the series! They literally ignored the main concept of the show the last two episodes.
It’s like going cross country in a camper van but staying in hotels.
Ive caught bowfin in champlain and they are truely an awesome fish thanks for bringing attention to this great sport fish!
Season 3 of Das Boat ... where they fish out of a different boat in 2 of the 6 episodes.
I know right. There doing more writing on it then work. Unless you count the mods for transporting other boats!!
its also pretty funny how the first thing they do is toss on a 20,000 dollar motor lol
just a helpful note bowfin love a popper on fly gear. I found that color doesn't matter as much as size, look at the frogs around you and let that be the upper size limit. then do a slow pop pop pop stop retrieve
Funny, I have never noticed anyone call them a dogfish yet. That's what we always called em as a kid!
Best epp. Of DB3. Who doesn't love Ollie? And chocolate is coming on. But Volkey is still the best
So interesting that he mentions the eyes of the bait that they just don’t like. So when they’re smashing a crankbait it’s almost always a head shot.
oh shit! you guys are in my backyard next episode! i watch that guys walleye videos all the time he is great
Well done on those bowfin, and the big 4 screws modification as well 😉
Das Boat makes a good ferry
Born and raised Vermonter and there is some huge bowfin around here
We eat bowfin they don't freeze well but fresh is key, and keep em chilledin ice. They fry up nice and crisp, probably not a good candidate for the grill (never tried it) but fried up they're as good as bass or catfish.
And when i doubt, make a patty lol
This is not true
Bowfin are such cool fish we get into some of them when bowfishing certain lakes
Awesome video. Bowfin are an amazing fish. They are more aggressive and pull so much harder than a largemouth. And they bite 24-7
My boy with the bred 13s
Lovin the Cermele narration as much if not more then the unique fishing species.
Bowfin AKA choupic down here in south LA, are highly sought after down here. When prepaid right they are delicious
Joe is the goat! Love it when your the host, reminds me of old times, now if we could just get you on video more.
Best episode
Hell I miss my pontiac Vibes went through three of those bad boys! Especially since you could pop the hatch glass open and lay flyrods, catfish rods, Baitcasters, with a orange flag tied to the end and be good to go especially the one with the sunroof I had the car may even better than the boat!
You guys are really missing out.. bowfin are really great fried up on high heat. The trick is to keep them alive and cold, then fillet, cut into chunks bread and fry before the meat gets warm or sets out.
I’ve actually always loved bowfin
Use the boat the show claims to be based on
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please .
Best season so far!
Choupique!! Bowfin is great table fare! Cajun cuisine is to grind it up like a gar-ball (green onion, little breading, seasoning), but typically choupique is made into patties. Also when we are just targeting choupique, we don't call it fishing- it's Choupiqin'. This tradition in my family goes all the way back to my great-grandmother choupiquin Bayou Courtableau to put dinner on the table back in the 30's. Heads up though Choupique/ Bowfin doesn't freeze well.
Number one, WHERE'S MY WRITING CREDIT? I know that I've suggested bowfin in detail on Das Boat comment sections. Lol.
In Michigan, where I do most of my fishing, we have sturgeon, all different salmon species, steelhead, the best smallmouth lake in the country (LSC), etc etc etc and bowfin are still my favorite Michigan fish for all of the reasons you guys detailed. Bowfin, or dogfish as we call them, are so mean, tough, and resilient.
I've caught them on whopper plopper and Rapalas. I've even been towed all around by monster bowfin on my yak. The best way to catch them, in terms of frequent hookups, is cut bait - a bluegill head works spectacularly.
Lastly, there is a way to clean and cook them. In my HONEST opinion, they are REALLY good table fare if the steps are followed exactly. You have to bleed them out while they're alive. You can't rinse the meat more than absolutely necessary. You can't get distracted by the weird, thick applesauce-like texture of the meat. Once you do all of that, dry batter and deep fry in chunks and it comes out like chicken nuggets. The meat firms up but remains juicy and is the most pure white meat you'll see, once cooked. The bonus is that they taste good with no swampy-ness at all - it's a mild flavored fish.
Anywho, thanks so much for this episode. In mid-Michigan, it's very common to come across a fishing bridge where people truly believe that either it's illegal to throw them back or that they're invasive, so they spend all day catching dogfish and tossing them into the weeds. I'm well-known at these local spots for educating guys and forcing them to throw the fish back in but it's this type of platform that can really make a difference.
#savethebowfin
I would love a sequel to the northeast or maybe a Bside where they target sturgeon. Maybe go to a farm as a side quest
I fish bowfin all the time in Wisconsin on the Mississippi backwaters.
Bowfin look like a cross between a brown trout and a snakehead. We don't have them in the midwest to my knowledge. They look wild, would love to catch one.
Edit: cool I just googled if bowfin are in the waters in Missouri and Kansas, and it said you can find them in the Mississippi and Missouri river backwaters.... looks like I can catch them after all.
I love catching Bowfin! slow rolling a spinnerbait with a trailer hook...
Still haven't caught a bowfin myself. Saw one up in Maine, and been trying to catch one in the Delaware River watershed.
Bowfin are a really cool fish. I've caught a bunch of them in central Michigan. They are savages compared to pretty much every other freshwater fish. Something like a funky Largemouth/Pike hybrid that's more aggressive than either.
Joe Cermele + Meateater. I'll always be thankful for it!
I have bowfin (or grenal) in my swamp in KY. Was really hoping you were going to show how to cook/eat one because I haven’t been brave enough to try it. They are very fun to catch
Erie here we go!! I live in Toledo was born in Oregon ohio, lake Erie west basin for life!
I'm gonna hit this soon! I'm in Malone!
another great season.
I very impressed 👏 tanks guys
Kinda funny how the clip of the guy bow fishing the bow fin was in a first lite shirt.
Great video
Bow fin pardon my plate episode?
I believe that would be opposite to what they are trying to do.
@@kanagawakenji7 nah if they convince people they taste alright people will start caring about them
@@hunters1372 Right, what I mean is that they don't want people eating them, they want people to enjoy fishing them for sport. That is why they want to stop people from bow fishing them [because they die, decreasing the population].
Good show
He needs a technical polling skiff to target Bowfin. There is a market in the northern States from NY to Wis and Minn for these types of boats and As crossover fishing tech grows as will the need.
Let’s get Meat Eater up here to Maine. We can take him lobstering or giant bluefin tuna fishing and to kill a black bear, whitetail or turkey in the same day.
Fire 🔥 love the video
We call these fish grindle, “pronounced GRINNEL” in the south, especially Mississippi. Ive eaten them my whole life. One of the best fish you can eat if you know what you’re doing. The meat cannot get wet or it will swell and get mushy.
I caught the same bowfin in my local marsh 3 times in a row, within 15 min
Must of been the only fish left in there then champ 😆
Must have liked you
come on guys. Das boat is about fishing outta the boat. 2 episodes in a row and the boat isnt being fished out of WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
I'm surprised they didn't eat 1. I personally love to eat bowfin. It reminds me of catfish. It's kind of a pain to clean. The meat it very jelly like until you cook it. Bleed then out and keep the meat cold. Delicious
Never caught a bowfin before, but we have a few in the Ottawa River. The slime on these fish reminds me of the american eel. If I had a boat, I'd certainly add the bowfin to my targeted species.
You don't need boat, you need a swamp.
@@Hucho33, well maybe I should change that to "had a car" since there ain't no swamps on the Ottawa accessible by bus. But, I'll keep it in mind!
If it's not Steve it's not the reason I'm subbed here
I mean, you do you but you're missing out on a lot of fantastic content. Cal in the Field, Janis's hunts, Duck Camp Diners, and The Back 40 are all really good.
@steverinella I live in PA and if you liked your flint lock hunt...1) move your flash powder to the right in the pan and you'll get more of a rifle..instant shot... 2) come hunt with us and we will have a fun time at camp and plenty of drivers and watcher.. maybe it can be in season 13 lol
Thought that was Lunkers on the thumbnail lol
Knock the sides of and stick them in a smoker or make patties out of them. They are a very clean almost tasteless fish when the water is cold. Like most fish in lakes they are not the best during the heat of the summer.
Dude spent three days hunting bowfin on a fly rod, seemed so frustrated, and when he finally got on was so nonplussed 🤷🏽♂️
ok . what did you do with the boats after you were done with the season. just curious no judgment. just hope they went to good homes but still appreciated the value of each of these boats
If you only watched das boat
you would think there aren't ANY fish left.
Super excited season 10 episode 1 tomorrow. I would have rathered they held and released.the whole season at once. But beggars cant be choosers
Fun episode, bowfin fight like no other! its a shame they're derided as rough "dogfish" and not respected as ancient predators by Minnesota anglers. I had one come and grab my minnow sitting in 1/4" of water just two inches from dry land one time and I had to leap to grab my pole!
That boat with the motor up would push in 1.5 ft. of water no problem. It doesn't draft deeper than that.
Bowfin…it’s what we do.
I don't know if i have a contrarian attitude, but after seeing all the same comments as my previous comment, i'll give an opposing view.
One of my favorite shows years ago was Monster Garage. Each episode was turning some type of car/truck/van into a different machine. The first season was great - drag bike, drag boat, etc. But by season 5 they had run out of ideas. I remember they made a truck that shook walnuts out of a tree. That's when i knew they were done.
This is Season 2 of Das Boat. What do you expect them to do? Take a slightly different boat, to a slightly different lake, to catch a slightly different fish?
They are changing things up. Ya it's weird that the show is about the boat and they didn't even use it. But they are trying different ideas, some work, some don't.
Maybe next season will be bluegill fishing off a pontoon boat?
#BigBowfinDreams !
What kind of Canoe is that? Is it a Gheenoe? Thank you!
You need to “strip set” the hook with a fly rod…rod is too flexible to set a hook in a boney mouth. That’s how we do it in Florida, anyhow. Tarpon, bonefish, etc.
Fish in the boat
The irony of talking about the negative impact of bowfishing, while using footage from Season 5 of Steven Rinella bowfishing a bowfin, and subsequently filleting and eating it.
We call that a cypress trout
If Bowfin can live in those waters, It may not be long before Northern Snakehead spread up there, hopefully it doesn't happen.
Is this the first catch and release species on Das Boat?
They caught and released buffalo.
We call these Shoepick in Louisiana.
Really not feeling this season. I can't put my finger on it but it just doesn't seem as fun as the other seasons were. Hopefully things get back on track and they start doing proper (dodgey) modifications again and start actually fishing out of the boat this season is supposed to be based around.
I came to the comments to see if I was the only one feeling that. Glad it's not just me.
For me it is more about the fish and the people.
Agree. They’re not actually fishing out of the boat so there’s no drama. It’s like watching a regular fishing show
@@Hucho33 Those are large parts of it for me as well and I have felt a bit let down on that front too (not with this episode). The RUclips anglers episode spent more time focused on her ass than the fish, don't get me wrong, it's a nice ass but if that's what I wanted to see I wouldn't be watching a MeatEater show. How many fish were caught in the last episode, one?
Comon Oliver! Eat a bowfin.
This is meta eater
I know good quality fly hooks are sharp, but sharpen them more, till they grab your fingernail without any downward pressure when you slide the hook across.
ive only caught 5 or 6 of them and everyone fought like hell for 2 or 3 mins and then they just roll over and over i had 1 one time hit my line then spit the hook then later it hit a 8 inch bluegill i had on a string 5ft from where i was sit so i put out a jug and it had ahold of it for 4 hour when i brought it in it spit the hook again so i put out a bank line and came back the next moring and had a 5lb female put her back to get bigger just had to get eyes on it such a cool fish and some of them can even get a pretty blueish green mouth and fins
Looked like a bunch of blandings turtles
On this episode of Das Boat, we will do our best to avoid fishing out of the boat and rather use it as a ferry or taxi to catch some fish we have never caught before.
"This is exactly the area the world record came from"
Nah, the world record is from Florence, SC bro.
Lake Champlain is an awesome fishery. If only they stopped dumping sewage into the lake and then complaining about blue green algae blooms.
A more significant issue is the runoff from the VT farms. The loading from the runoff greatly outweighs the strict limits (and storm water overflows from the VT plants) from wastewater plants
Time to plan a Bow fin, bow fishing trip!
love how everyone just assumes a crazy looking animal or fish is "prehistoric living fossils". LOL
Except for the part where they really are
@@DavidGraham47 prove it. you cant.
Das boat without das boat. Again.
*strongest bite of a freshwater fish belongs to the bowfin?*
I beg to differ lads!!!
Northeast? Barely. How about cod, fluke, and black sea bass off the New England coast?
I would like to know from Steve what's his favorite caliber of ammo he likes using the most.
💯👍🏽
