I used to be partial to Heifetz with this concerto, but I think Ehnes, when all is said and done, is the best. He has such a refined sound, with such a balanced sense of taste in his phrasing. Musical lines are always intuitive and clear, and emotionality is always thought through, and definite. Intonation is consistently settled, and runs are completely clear. I like Hillary, too, but Ehnes really is the best in the Korngold.
Your comment had me thinking why the Rózsa concerto championed by Heifetz and a good companion piece to other 20th century violin concertos never seems to get played anymore. Heifetz might be the benchmark on that one but he does not appear to have any competition!
Applause not only to brilliant Ehnes, but to A. Shelly for his eagle-eyed, meticulous leadership and to the orchestra for it’s marvelous professionalism. They fit around Ehnes’ rhythm and sound like a finely fit glove.
Oh my! At the very end, during the hug, they looked at each other like they were both eternally grateful for the high competence in each other's work. Love that!
Until this beautiful recording, I thought I had heard all of the best recordings of this magical Korngold work (Gil Shaham, Hillary Hahn), but James Ehnes and the Orchestre du Centre national des Arts du Canada is simply outstanding. Bravo, and thanks so much!
Korngold composed scores for movies in the 1930's, including The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn! His composition style definitely has that old film score magic. ✨
Brilliant and amazing professional interpretation. So mutch beautiful music and very very beautiful sound. Technically exelente. Every note playd exactly. Thank God for you.
Different one - Oistrakh played the 1705 Marsick Strad, and Ehnes plays the Marsick Strad from 1715 - I'm pretty sure that both of them were owned by Marsick at some point.
Sorry, I can NOT watch it. Seeing all those brainless fools who have been muzzled is unacceptable. I was fighting all those years against the C...regime, lost my job, family, friends and my life. Shelley and Ehnes refused, good for them. Stay strong and fight the system.

Couldn’t agree more, he absolutely nails the second theme in the 1st movement!!

Of the highest order.
Stunning! Love Korngold: Violin Concerto. Couldn’t resist watching it now, very late here, though.
Thank you for upload this past concert.

James Ehnes so great great musician of our time. Can be so blessed to have possibilitie to listen so great master.
What a best tempo for orchestra in last movement. Sound so perfect.
I agree. Usually too quick. But this had the sting and je ne sais quai?
Absolutely terrific! Beautifully done!
It sounds like music from some movie based on a fairy tale. Kind and soft. 😌💖🇨🇱

What violin is this?
Marsick Stradivarius
The one from Oistrakh?
