I'm an introvert and can't even be in church without feeling extremely awkward. Greeting people after the service is so hard i come across so cold, i go home and rethink everything obsessively. I know God has made me this way for a reason because the flip side of this is i have great empathy and sensitivity that others do not experience. It's hard to leverage, but I pray God that he uses me just the way i am.

Thanks for sharing. I'm an extrovert who has (as of late) realized I do have a pretty introverted side as well. And I think it's wack that Christian culture tends to prize extroversion.
So for someone like me I need to deny myself to be with the Lord and to pray and to be a good listener.

Same! I'm trying to analyse myself and I always think that maybe I'm doing something wrong, or maybe I come across as cold, because I'm not loving other people as much as I should. I'm trying to understand if I'm still on the process of becoming who God really made me to be, or if I'm really supposed to be like this

Essi Galley Shyness and introversion aren’t equanimous. Reluctance is a lack of courage - a virtue God calls us to. If you are introverted like me, attempt to bend your situation to your personality. Don’t bend yourself to your situation. That leads to misery, and God dos not call us to that.

I'm shy and introverted too, and I hate small talk. But I love to teach the Bible or deliver a message (I am a public school teacher). I even go to a prison and preach to the men, and it's like I am another person up there. I can feel the Holy Spirit working in me when I do, so that working together really makes me happy. Over the years I have become a fearless public speaker, yet having to keep the conversation going over a meal drives me crazy. Isn't that weird?

    • @AMcDub0708

You can be a shy extrovert. I’ve met many. But if you mean you are a shy introvert, you don’t have to be a street corner, open air preacher. You don’t have to hand out tracts to strangers. I mean, if God specifically said to YOU to do that, then by all means, don’t offend the Holy Spirit. But for an introvert, this is uncomfortable and people see through it and don’t respond very well bc they can see we are uncomfortable and it just makes the whole thing awkward and unbearable for everyone involved. For introverts, our job is to make deep, lasting relationships with people and pour into their lives as Christ did to his followers. If you have children, pour into their lives. You don’t have to walk up to strangers and chit chat and then hit them over the head with a Bible. Get to know a few people and have those deep conversations you crave. And when trust and relationship is established, faith is usually a place conversation goes. People will value your input and your opinion bc you have invested in their lives. THAT is the introverts calling as a Christian. Leave open air preaching to the extroverts.

And to my shock the lady said that she was actually going through something similar. And as I am growing more and more in relationship with Jesus, I'm realizing the true freedom He wants us to experience and also how much we are needed in the body. If we love each other, we have to be willing to have an open heart to our brothers and sisters in Christ. A lot of us are going through the same things Or have been through something someone else has, and we can bring joy hope and comfort to them. And then they will be made whole and be able to do the same. Each one of us are made in God's image, and just think, all of us in Christ are an aspect of Who He is. I am also an introvert. In fact, I have been so all my life(and I'm 22). I am also a church and worship leader. Some days I feel so energized and almost feel like an extrovert(almost I said), but that usually lasts just for a couple of weeks then I becoming as shy as I ever was again(:-D). I think the trickiest part in being an introvert is first of all acknowledging that it's okay to be one(I struggle with that a times) no matter what it seems like on the outside(what people say, the fear of missing out because your introvert etc). And secondly, as Tim said, introvert is not who I am, but it's what I am. Hence, being an introverted should not stop me from being all that God has called me to be; a kind, loving, self-controlled... person(Gal 5:22) and it should not stop me from obeying God. May God help us all to being the wonderful introverted people that we are in Christ.

I'm painfully introverted. Since the virus hit, as an introvert, I'm extremely happy to be told to stay home. I did try going to church before this all began ( my brother was a pastor and I went with my mother and joined his congregation ) but then he came to me one day and told me he was leaving that church ( for personal reasons and the new church where he was offered a new position with was over 100 miles away) so I felt a bit like I had been deserted but I did continue going to the church my brother had left until my mother decided she no longer wished to attend that church as well. We tried another church but it wasn't the same, the people were a bit distant so we left that church too. I decided that I would just attend services online, it was better because I have a hearing problem and it's wonderful to be able to use the close captioning and not miss out on what's being said, plus I didn't have to start over in a new congregation ( which being an extreme introvert was very challenging to begin with ) I have felt guilty for not finding another church to attend and that I was using my introversion as an excuse, but I love my morning Bible study and I can watch all the videos online that I want. ( Ray Comfort is one I watch daily ) I do share online via Facebook and messenger important lessons I've learned and our Father's word.

Silence is golden and quiet strength is appreciated by many Christians. Christians are natured differently and can serve God in different ways according to His purpose. Your demeanor is no accident. God knows what He is doing in your life. I wouldn't look at it as something that needs to be changed.

I'm very intoverted as well but God does have a blessing for us when we are with other people. "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." As an introvert, I never want to appear stuck up so I end up talking too much and then spend the rest of the day kicking myself for it. It’s easier to just stay home. Also, the shaky cam is nauseating and the constant background noise is very, very distracting. You don’t need either one.

I am very content to be home alone or with my husband. But staying where I’m comfy goes against the Biblical idea of “bodyhood,” getting together with other Christians for the purpose of building each other up.
One of my friends was surprised to hear I’m actually introverted. He said that I seem “very social.” Well, I try to engage because I really do love people, but it is exhausting.

Reminds me of a former coworker that said: "Who told you that you were shy, introverted, antisocial, and had nothing to say?" Actually being introverted (to me) is a gift. In a way it means we're likely to be more independent and be careful in what we say. I have loads of opinions and thoughts about life. I just choose carefully who I share these things with. I also know who actually doesn't care what I have to say because they already have their mind made up in judgement of me and what they think I'm like so why waste my breath on them? Lol.

I appreciate this so much. I am an introvert with some extrovert characteristics. But lean much more heavily towards introversion. I agree that God makes people differently and have come to accept that I will never be an extrovert. It seems that especially people in the church will judge a person as if being an introvert is somehow sinful. Like we need to come out of our shells for Jesus or something. But denying who God made a person to be and pretending to be someone I am not is not what God intended. Instead we need to recognize God’s creative genius in making people differently according to His own plan and learn how to best utilize each personality type’s strengths to achieve the most for His kingdom purposes. Then we will be working with one another instead of focusing on which personality is right or wrong, which is just silly anyway. We should each use every ounce of who we are to direct people to Christ and obey Him in all things regardless of personality type. Thanks for this. Good stuff.

I need my alone time, but it's not alone time at all. I use this time to draw closer to Jesus, to talk with Him, to love Him and to recieve His love. I use this time to read His word. We can't live without His word. I also use this time to pray for others. I pray for the body of Christ and I pray for the lost. I'm not out in the public much, but it is very draining, unless it is at church, which I love. When I am at work, it's more difficult to be around people because mostly they are unsaved. I try to witness to them... People really don't want to hear it, so I plant a seed and go on. I love Jesus and cherish our time together. It all comes down to that anyway. Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship. When I die and stand before Him, I know that He will know who I am because I spend countless hours with Him now.... Fall in love with Jesus!

As an introvert I am able to experience the power, presence, and provision of God on a deeper level. I've come to realize that my private experiences with God have enhanced what I am able to achieve and perform in the eyes of the public.
Jesus Himself after being surrounded by people withdrew into the mountains to be alone with God His Father.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Not every aspect of your faith should be done before the eyes of the people, After all we are called to seek His praise and not the praise of our fellow man.
To anyone reading this I pray unto you Ephesians 1:17
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.
    I Love all. Be Blessed!

It's more a question of the amount of stimulus the individual's system works well with than this superficial inner/outer characterisation. Putting continual pressure on people to go after everyone they encounter is just a way of the group keeping control over the individual by instilling a sense of falling short and hence guilt.

I think God created introverts for a reason. He said treat others as you would like others to treat you. So if you’re an introvert, some people want to be left alone so you were made for those people. You don’t overstay you’re welcome, and true blue friends love to have you around because you don’t drain them of their energies.
They always want to pick your brain which is an ideal time to share the gospel; the Bible says:
    1 Peter 3:15
    but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
Notice it says when they ASK for the hope you have in Christ.
That’s how I got saved, I asked another introvert who happened to be a believer what and why he believed. The rest is history. Never was a fan of people cramming the gospel down my throat. But to each it own.as an introvert myself, I thought it was a handicap until I became born again. That was 30 years ago. Those quiet times with Jesus and the Bible are priceless!

I actually enjoy my own company and being in Worship with LORD.... I actually enjoy living inside my head allot.
If I was in the crowd with allot people and there was a bunch of small talk going on, I would probably be quiet as a mouse but when it comes to Jesus, the Gospel, and the Kingdom.... I will literally talk of a storm because that's what I'm fully passionate about.

I’m an introvert (who grew up a huge extrovert - not sure how that change occurred), but I don’t think people in my church family would know it. I sing in the choir and one morning during greeting time, I leaned over to the row in front of me and said “how are you?” to a woman. She thought I said “I love you” and got so excited and said “I love you too!” I could have died of embarrassment because I’d never be that brash (I didn’t know the lady very long at that time), but it actually made her feel very good and seeing that made me feel much better. It’s easy to feel guilty for being introverted because most church leaders happen to be extroverted and simply don’t understand that some of the things they do and ask us to do horrify us. But this video was very helpful, as was the reminder to deny ourselves.

Thank you, Tim. Just ran across this wonderful video. As a lifelong introvert, I don't really get this level of understanding from most people whether Christian or not. Indeed, one atheist psychologist I knew causally (not therapeutically, thank God) asserted that introversion per se is pathological. No Christian has been quite so rejecting, but a fair number have indicated that introversion is somehow sinful or at least not part of God's plan.
I have heeded God's call and done the tasks He has set before me, some of which involved public speaking. In the nursing home where I am a permanent resident due to my disabilities, I have been the President of the Resident's council, chairing council meetings and speaking to management on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves. I was for six months also interim (lay) pastor of our in house church whose attendance kept increasing. Preaching the gospel to sometimes forty residents and staff did not come naturally to me, but God's grace is entirely sufficient.

I'm an introvert just like you and you described exactly how i an in your own description of yourself. I used to think i had to come out off my "shell" to be a good Christian. I can do it for a small time but its way uncomfortable for me of i do it too long. I've prayed about it. But i think it's just me.

I try to do what God calls me to do, to the best of my limited abilities. But I really hope He grants me more solitude after I am done with this mortal form.

Jesus carved out quiet alone time for Himself. Sounds pretty introverted to me. Introverts can make great leaders, this is something many people do not understand. The church doesn’t value introverts enough, but God always has.

I'm introverted to the point of getting up to use the bathroom right before 'meet and greet' at church. The shelter in place has been wonderful

This is me. I know intimately every word you said, even the bit about it being easier to speak in front of a large crowd than in front of a handful. The biggest crowd I’ve spoken from God’s word was around 80 or 90. It was definitely easier than the smaller crowds of 40 or so. And I tend to to stay quiet if I’m with just a handful of people. I also have trouble going up to speak to just one person, but I’m trying to do so every opportunity I get, and it’s getting easier week by week.
I’m not sure about God making me introverted though. My introversion, though very useful for certain types of spiritual work, is merely my personal response to external and internal stimuli that I experienced in childhood. I could have chosen to fight against it, recognising that extreme introversion can make life difficult, but I chose not to and ended up as I am. Having said that, I see introversion as a gift that allows me to say and do good things that I couldn’t do if I was any other way.
Very encouraging video, thankyou for uploading.

How badly I need prayer! How desperately I need forgiveness! Pray for me Tim, I thank God, the Spirit for you.
I continue to disobey this command, I'm a university student and the lost are all around. The fields are full of grain.
But I fear ridicule? Or what do I really fear? No, really I'm a coward. I've no friends either due to this cowardice.
I've only spoken up once, to a close old friend, not even to my own flatmates, and I confess my sins to no one.
Please, spare just a thought for me, and pray for me, that I may have just a piece of the love of Christ truly in my heart, the burden for others is increasing, but I don't know enough, or know people well enough, I certainly have no social skills, that's what I say as I walk home in shame. I know people younger than me have answered this call. I;m so ashamed, I can't even say this to my own mother.
Please make more videos about this, about your journey, my pain for knowing who I am in this way pushes me to an ungodly despair. Why do I stand in the way of the Spirit? Thank you for this video, The Lord repay you for your faith.

I have to say we are who we are. Mixing psychology into Christianity gets you no where. Many prophets from the Bible would have been considered unusual.
This is not the point nor the interest. The interesting thing was how the Holy Spirit used them and others and will continue to move, teach, empower and endorse all manner of people's.
So please give it a rest in trying to shoot fish in a barrel.

The still small voice cannot be heard in the middle of a crowd.
    (Conscience is drowned in groups)
    In introversion is quiet
-which is the only place peace visits.
    Be blessed this day

That's cool that you're open minded enough to still check it out. I'm a Christian introvert and sharing with other people can sometimes be intimidating. People can be very nasty and judgemental but it's important to be able to step out of our comfort zone sometimes. Have a good one.

I read this from a book by a famous Christian author. He says that if you do not commit to certain church activities, church leaders should not grant him/her church membership. But I really dislike my church cell group. We can't talk real. It's all surface talk. Nothing deep. Also, people in the group do not talk to each other outside of the group time. It's so awkward. Sunday school is also hard. First, the teacher always insist on using certain phrase as a correct answer. Then she teach like a lecturer. You don't get much question time. Sometimes, there are just too much that you don't understand and you do not know where to start asking. So I rather watch theology and Bible study lessons online. I learn better on my own too. I can pause and think, write notes and continue. So I do not know how bad that can be.

I study on my own as well and get a lot more out of it. I'm getting older and prefer quiet time on my own. Introverts are often misunderstood but that's not my problem.
