On the one hand, it was nice to have subsequent versions of the band continue to play and keep the music alive, and even record some new material with Keith Mitchell as lead vocalist because it was suited to him and he did a great job with it as well as faithfully performing the back catalog and most importantly he was not trying to replace Gary West which was impossible to do. It was a similar scenario to Journey with Arnel Pineda. But, IMHO, the various versions after that were essentially tribute bands, which is fine, but they should have marketed themselves that way to honor and protect the legacy of the original band which is irreplaceable and that created all the lasting music. I mean, with all due respect, after the co-founder writer guitarist died leaving only one original member, how is whatever group is out there still performing not a tribute band? Always a bit sad to see that happen, but very thankful for the original bands 5 albums being available.

Talented musicians in the Shooting Star tribute band out playing occasionally using the name. Just wish they would be honest and bill themselves as “Shooting Star Legacy” etc. There is no replacement for the original band. (Or even the “Keith Mitchell” version in late 80s early 90s, which focused on a different direction with new songs primarily written by Van alone, but while paying homage in live performances to the songs of the original band.

@@shootingstaroriginalbandfu9452 Yes, so many of the great old bands now consist of an original roadie or two. Playing with them at this upcoming show is Foghat, Head East, and Missouri. None billed as a tribute band but I do know what to expect. "Shooting Star" has been doing this for some time. A few years after their true last show they came here to St.Louis and played at an absolute redneck dive bar way out of town. I went to show not knowing what to expect and left during the very first song disappointed beyond belief.
