As a Brit who is terrible at other regional accents, kudos for that solid intro! Yes, we all own one of those hats.
Serious note though: a tip I've found useful to remember - due to me being terrible at other regional accents - is that it can be easy to get hung up on feeling you need real-world regional dialects in your locker to create distinct NPC voices. You don't! There's plenty of permutations you can find (and are likely to be more comfortable slipping into) in your native accent based on speech patterns; if someone's bumbling or constantly skittish, or has a mild stammer, or always sounds like their sentences end in a question? Maybe they use complicated words they mispronounce while trying to make themselves look clever, or maybe they're gruff and monosyllabic. They might speak loudly or quietly. And all that's without considering dialects more commonly attached to your local class systems, with which you may be more familiar, than to regions you didn't grow up in.
It should go without saying those often need to be treated with the same sensitivity one would treat choices of regional accents, but in short: if you can't do Scots or Irish (or English-British like Bob here), don't worry! Better not to try and explore some language-based variations on your native accent instead.
(Edit: Just finished the video now and ah, yeah, okay... it was Anto doing VO all along lol. Can I compliment Bob on his seamless dubbing skills instead?)

I'll reinforce Bob's first point from a DM POV who's currently working on a homebrew world. Talking about your player concept with your DM can help your DM build the world. Now we're collaborating! I've got a player who is a long-time player who likes to test all sorts of builds, and likes to develop a good backstory with sidequest hooks, so we worked on it together and he helped me develop an undeveloped area of my map and an early campaign boss battle idea. How awesome is that?

Always good to Roleplay 3 dimensional characters.
I appreciate this being pushed out into the community. Doing the voice is cool, but it should come second to considering the character as a real person with opinions, emotions, and goals.

Great point there by Ed. When people talk about character goals, they'll say things like "I want to be the best thief that ever lived" and "I want to avenge my fallen brother" and so on. These are great goals, don't get me wrong, but they're utterly useless in the day-to-day stuff that's going to be 90% of your roleplay.
How does your dead brother help you comfort a distraught farmer after his daughter was kidnapped by a kobold cult? Being "the best thief in the world" does not mean you have to steal an apple from every merchant you meet.
And neither of those will help in a fight to the death with a swarm of zombies.

One of the best role-playing tip I've ever heard is body language! My super confident Warlock gesticulates, points, uses borderline sign language. My noble lady monk sits with exquisite posture and chin held high. My grumpy old shopkeeper is hunched over, hand shaking as his points a boney finger at the thieving rogue.
Really useful if, like me, you're terrible at doing voices 😅

I actually have pizza as a specialty food in my game world. But it's not pizza as we know it today but pizza as it was understood in the late Medieval period. Which was basically a fluffy bread coated with rose water and sugar. Like a sweeter angel food cake. The channel Tasting History did an episode on this original pizza.

Talking of pizza and long term aims I had a PC who in her downtime tried selling 'flatbread with potato, cheese and gravy' which went so badly they had to return to a life of adventuring. One of the slices of this horrible proto-pizza showed up as a cursed magic item called the Pizza Hat of Nom Detection that when worn could cast identify object to find any food item OTHER then the horrible 'Pizzas'. It wasn't until the end of the epic 20 level campaign that the PC tried using tomatoes instead of gravy and introduced Pizza to Waterdeep!

thanks for the video Bob, In my campaign I have my players make up the names of most NPCs and some cities. it has taken a lot of stress off me. sure the names started out silly, but as the players are asked to do it more and more, the names are better and better. In my opinion, the best so far has been Kevin Rhedsheeart (pronounced Redshirt) an expendable, who i created to drop some lore. He is now a group favorite. I expect the group will defend him if the town is attacked. and if (and when..i hope none of my players see this) he is killed, the group will swear vengeance

I like the idea that most random encounters are where both sides are surprised and don't know what to do, hence the NPC will often want to bargain. Fights result when the NPC already hates the PCs and plots an ambush or something. Makes for a more intriguing game.

My greatest tip is… just do it. I find embarrassment is the enemy of immersion and if you have a good table and a good GM then it comes naturally, even to the most shy of my players (have had literally hundreds of new people play in my game) open up once they overcome being embarrassed. We are all lame nerds so who cares just play and have fun and bam you’re roleplaying.

"embarrassment is the enemy of immersion" -- this, absolutely. There's a member of my dnd group (he flits in and out, thank goodness) who has a tendency to make me feel like my roleplaying choices are stupid. Despite this guy being a generally pleasant person and having a really likable and useful character, I'm always glad when he isn't there because I'm so much able to relax and enjoy myself!

I get compliments from my new dnd group all the time for the character I made when I joined them. Always someone who stays after and says whatever cool thing I revealed makes them so excited and happy about the thought I put into it. It was an ongoing campaign for Wildemount in Exandria. I had quite a bit to work with, what with what is online already. I just had to ask the dm what is different for this particular table and some of the story arc for the group that has played out already. I then asked my new party members what they wished to tell me of their characters. After that I picked out a few things that were easy enough concepts they could work with any world. Namely, I chose a samurai subclass fighter (which, despite the name, can be flavored however), a sage background, a character with a passion for linguistics, and the main thing behind a lot of my character choices, that the character was a parentified eldest child. These concepts could be used about anywhere and also fulfill a lot of what my new party needs. I also pulled in themes and hints I had been picking up from them and the dm. I overlapped some hometown stuff, overlapped some faction stuff, and overlapped some ties to certain deities already. Nothing that diminished their stuff, but gave their characters a reason to be interested or maybe have overheard some aspect of my character. For example, the other pc who shares a hometown. They haven’t met my character before, but because they are from the same hometown, they had heard my character’s family name before and so have the context of that. For the faction, well I chose the cobalt soul. We have an artificer who also is from that though both are from different locations and have different responsibilities within said faction. But this immediately has the other react with that information (in this case, tentative trust). And for the rest, well I had a connection to one because the party was here to see his friend and it became known quickly that I was also this person’s friend (this connection also has my character join the party). And the next to last, well this is a tad complex. They have a more childish vibe which immediately clicks with my character’s eldest child vibe. That character appreciates the attention and my character appreciates a source to give that familial attention to. And the last has no reason to not welcome my character with all that knowledge from the party. Oh right! I almost missed one, well that one took some platonic courting but that’s actually a good thing for story because there should be one who maybe is a hold out, so long as they can be platonically courted. And yeah, then we had a lot revealed through just organic stuff. Like the drawing talent, my character started sketching the camp we were going to break into while we were taking a break and observing it from afar. The party then used this to rp using it like a sorta map as we planned tactics. While the rest are getting ready with spells and such, the sword guy and I start talking and building those first steps towards trust. At some point the spoiling happens with the childish type of pc. And so on. I use the break well. And then we are off on our heist. It allows us to further show off and me to pick up important information from a pc that needs that platonic courting. This ties more in because it isn’t information that the rest of the party knows. So now all the more reason for my character to remain in sight for that pc. And so on. Basically I took a lot of care to make my character tie in to a lot of things, and I haven’t even gone over the stuff the dm asked me to include, like hooks to certain parts of the map he wants the party to explore, or connections to that god who has already shown interest in the party. And on and on. I’m quite happy to work with this table. It has an amazing dm who works hard to and well go weave and the party is welcoming but also has a good instinct for story telling and honesty I just love playing with this group every time. Even on session days where we can’t all get together, those of us who can just play party games to continue the camaraderie. It’s just a really good group. Considering their last player didn’t vibe well with the tone of the group, I’m glad I do and am grateful I could join.

I made an improv discovery of the other day which relates to role-playing and deciding “what would my character do?“
While knowing what your character would do is important, what’s more important is understanding what the story demands. In other words, if your role-playing And you have a character that wouldn’t participate in a fight, you’re more than welcome to do that. However, a question I would ask is “why would my character do the best thing?“
In other words, if there’s a big fight happening, and your character is a peaceful monk, And it’s clear that the party needs the character to join the fight, take a second to think about what would it take for your character to overcome what you think their preferences and do the thing that you think they ought to do? Then, you can go ahead and join the fight, And use your justification to determine how your character acts in the aftermath of the battle. Maybe your character is in love with one of the other characters. Maybe their peaceful nature is something that they’ve had to study very hard for, and they lose control, much like a Vulcan might with their logic,. Maybe all their peaceful claims are superficial.
By looking at what is best to do, and figuring out a reason to do it, you expand your character possibilities, and also give opportunities for them to reflect on what it is they’re doing and why.

One of my favorite characters I've made is Thogg Thunderclaw, who has a bison mount named Fifi. The first session, he saved his bison from drowning in a sinking ship, risking his own life so he wouldn't have to live without her. A few sessions down the line we're heading into a city that wouldn't let Thogg take Fifi inside. So he refused to enter, and I had to make a new character. There was no way he was going to leave his precious bison after all they'd been through together.

9:00 I like to tell my players that the game is about the party, so if you want your character to fight the party or go off on a random tangential adventure, that's fine, but now that's a part of the world that I ask for your input on, it's not your character. I've had several characters betray the party and just said - your character is evil, but if you want to keep playing they'll stay with the party or you'll roll a new one. It's worked for me so far!

Talking to the game world/letting your players talk to the game world in an impactful way (i.e. be willing to actually reward your players for trying it) is huge in making a campaign something that isn't just Tabletop Murder Simulator 5e.
The campaign I run, I'm still trying to find ways to encourage non-combative thinking amongst the players, not that I have any problem with combat, but I know that session after session of 95% fights wears thin for some of them.
Ironically, the campaign I play (with 100% the same group) we just had a couple amazing examples of being rewarded for talking to the game world, major bad guys at that. We're playing an Eberron campaign that's about to take a Spelljammer twist, and as part of effecting that twist, our party was sent to recover technology from White Plume Mountain, placed in the Mournland (slight SPOILERS for WPM to follow) and were tasked with getting the WPM legendary weapons in exchange for the technology by a mysterious entity in the mists when we got there. Our fighter is a former soldier of old Cyre and managed to open Bluto (the guy leading all the greatsword-swinging warriors, who our DM made a cursed group of Cyran troops) up to being freed of the curse by a spell (don't recall what spell) with some good roleplaying and a good persuasion roll. Now instead of just killing them all, we're either going to get rewarded for taking them to New Cyre or gain their discounted services on our airship/soon-to-be spelljammer ship. Similarly, when we found the giant crab guy guarding one of the legends, I remembered that my totem barBEARian can ritual cast speak with animals, which I don't think I ever used before and kind of saw as almost-useless flavor filler. On a lark, I struck up a conversation with the crab from the doorway and after finding that he liked being sequestered in a lair full of treasure but thought almost everybody else in the dungeon was a douche, we made him a job offer to guard our party reserves in one of the pocket dimension baubles we'd salvaged from Lost Laboratory of Kwalish previously, instead of fighting and probably killing him to take the weapon he was guarding. Showing him that we'd already defeated one of the other guardians and taken Blackrazor and rolling a natural 20 for persuasion, the crab decided he'd take us up on the offer if we came back with the remaining legendary weapon, so he wouldn't be betraying anybody until/unless we were clearly going to wipe out the whole dungeon regardless of whatever course of action he took. That probably falls under the "the king isn't going to abdicate the throne just because the bard rolled a 30 to persuade him to make the bard king" rule, but it's definitely a great reward for using a mostly forgotten subclass feature and roleplaying a bit. (I would've been quite happy even with much less reward tbh; it was a great moment rolling a nat 20 with a +0 modifier on the first, or at least first meaningful, use of the totem feature to speak with animals.) We've previously been inclined to just jump straight into combat most of the time, but these instances will definitely have us considering whether there's a deal to be made.

For rule #5 "talk to the game world" I had a session where our GM had planned a combat encounter but we players just talked our way out of it. We had found a town that was struggling to get food and water because the mayor had taken those resources away from the people as revenge for driving his tribe out of their homeland. We were supposed to fight the mayor to get the resources back but when we found out about his backstory we sympathized and instead helped him find a new solution that doesn't involve more death.

Hi Bob! I'm from Brazil and i love your videos, i get a lot of inspiration and you have a cool vibe that makes me chill a little (i'm very ansious). Have you ever played Forum RPG? My friends and I are short of time, and it was a solution we came together, but i've never DM'd or played in a forum before.

I have a fun story about a PC betraying the party and it being quite a memorable moment.
I was DMing a campaign where the characters had made a deal with Asmodeus. He would let one of the characters become his temporary avatar for a final boss fight if they managed to descend all the layers of Baator.
But, one of the characters was a tiefling working undercover for Dispater. The character joined them at level 1, and went months without blowing their cover. And just after a boss fight where one of the PCs sacrified themselves and the others were exhausted, that character revealed their plans to the party and using a special scroll, they grabbed the would-be-avatar and teleported away back to the Iron Tower in Dis.
And they had to go back to the second layer, and that PC's player became a GM for a session while I became a player for a session. The whole party was on board for a rescue mission full of heroic moments and RP while fighting the PC-turned-BBEG.
Not something easy to pull off, and I would suggest not to unless you trust your players (specially the one doing the betraying), but I have been giving hints since the beginning of the adventure and made sure they knew that the only creature worse than Devils are lawyers. So while it came in a rather stressful moment, it wasn't a bad surprise.
    very fun tho, perfect 5/7

Have to admit... the most memorable sessions are the ones where there was party conflict. In this group I'd say 80% of the players enjoy that. For them, it's not a flaw, it's a feature. It doesn't happen often, but it happens.
To be duplicitous I have to work at it.

Roll with it. My players have been at it as long as I have, (about 40-45 years now) and they fight like cat and dog in character, until it matters. Then any one of them will do anything they can to save any of the others.
They are all played by grumpy old men, so a lot of that seeps into character.
I love it, when we play on Roll20 they often have to check I'm still there, because they are just as happy to argue about who to kill, whether to kidnap them, or why did the Rogue just poison the prisoner,
In the last game it was completely by accident.
I've had many great stories from games over the last 5 decades, but this went straight into the Top 20!
They had an orc prisoner, Tied up. (By the Rogue who has a magic item called "Lace Gloves" which allows them to tie and untie increadibly firm knots very quickly) Under the effect of Hold Person, and absolutely not going anywhere any time soon.
The Rogue player said, "I'll give him a little stab... just so he knows who's boss... not much damage..."
BUT the player forgot the character was still wielding their (2E-AD&D) Dagger of Venom they'd been using in the fight previously.
I asked for an attack roll.
      Player said "Huh? He's defenceless"
"I said, I know... you hit him just fine, I just need to see if you crit"
He said, "I'm pulling the blow, I'm not going for damage"
I said, "Cool... you do 1 point of damage."
      He said, "then why..."
      I said, "Just roll..."
      He rolled a 20.
      I laughed...
      He said "What?"
I said, "That dagger you STILL have in your hand..."
      He said, "OH F***!!!!"
The orc prisoner didn't have great saving throws... turned an unusual shade of green... (even for an Orc) choked and convulsed for a minute or so... and died. Throughout whch period the party were screaming for the Priest to come and save the Orc.
The priest (the only one who could stop the poison) was at the far end of a cave disposing of an orc staff that he'd cast silence 15' radius on to stop the shaman spellcasting and it still had about 8 minutes left on it . He couldn't hear any of this despite being about 60 feet away.
When he got back... it all kicked off. The Rogue was literally saying "HONESTLY!!! I didn't MEAN it!" which gave me the next fifteen minutes to drink coffee and listen.

My roleplaying advice is simple: instead of saying “it’s what my character would do” ask yourself “it’s NOT what my character would do… so why are they?” People act out of ‘character’ all the time. Why they are leads to character growth.

Regarding betrayal: The betrayer can never truly win. As long as the medusa runs off and the betrayer escapes everyone will be ok. If the rest of the party ends up really losing it can very well shut down a game... ask me how I know.

@@kevwox Short story is. It was a Star Wars game and one of the players was secretly an Empirial spy. As the DM, I didn't make it explicit enough that they were being sabotaged and the Empire basically won. Although I didn't see it at the time, I had basically taken all agency away from the party because I was so excited about the intrigue.
But it could have worked if I had just said, "it seems suspicious that you keep getting foiled" The party would have picked it up and run with it.

There is no 'roleplay part of roleplaying games' - the entire GAME is Roleplay, that's why it's CALLED a roleplaying game.
RPGs have three basic pillars, usually- those being combat, exploration, and social interaction.
ALL THREE OF THOSE ARE ROLEPLAY, unless you're really exploring dungeons and fighting monsters, and we both know you're not.

I disagree that players shouldn't ever work against their party's interests. Sometimes, it falls into the RP of the character, and not every situation is Black or White. Sure, this may create tension but tension drives plot and story. In your example, I wouldn't have let the player make a new character over that, since the action was in line with the character's morals. Instead, I would've let it open for them to either work it out, get over it for the sake of the over all goal, or would've allowed the player to find redemption.

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  7 месяцев назад

We're on the same page! I didn't say "ever" I said 99% of the time. And in this case, the PCs did not want to work it out. They decided it would be best to go their separate ways.
