I believe the retirement crisis will get even worse. Many struggle to save due to low wages, rising prices, and exorbitant rents. With homeownership becoming unattainable for middle-class Americans, they may not have a home to rely on for retirement either.

Got it! Buying stocks during a recession when prices are down could be a good move. You might get them at a lower price and sell later when they go up. Just do your homework and be aware of the risks before diving in!

"Best" is a subjective term. All these cities are nice, but as a Washington resident I would argue they are only great places to retire if one is a wealthy retiree. You mention nothing in the southern half of the state, and almost nothing east of the Cascades. Not entirely fair to a state that has a lot to offer.

  • @geopietro

What about the weather in each of those places. A huge segment of retirees try to avoid snow and below zero temperatures. Additionally, some want to minimize rain and overcast skies. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Born and raised in Port Townsend area is nice to visit but cost of living is high. If u chose to retire in the area go to hadlock, Quilcene taxes are lower. And closer to silverdale for major shopping.

Best retirement state for the rich and super rich people; with selected, farther away, less popular location for the less rich. I love WA, I want to live there while still young and able; otherwise I need tons of money to live in areas that have easy access to services.

If I had my choice I'd do Lake Chelan for 8 months and Long Beach, WA (although Port Townsend also works) for Nov,. Dec,. Jan. & Feb. Can't stand cold and snow. Love the wind and rain over the winter in Long Beach. Less wind and rain in Port Townshend.) As to Lk. Chelan... paradise.

Is there any safe clean place in Washington near ocean or large lake/bay where you can buy a home under $500k? I heard Ocean Shores is being over run by homeless and significant increase property crime.

I grew up in Port Orchard, WA, which is just north of Gig Harbor. First of all Wollochet is pronounced "well-ot-chet," not the French "shay." Secondly, it is not a city, it is an area of Gig Harbor.

In the face of the worst inflation in 40 years, the Washington state legislature voted a new .50/gal gas tax that will go into effect soon. This was in addition to a whole slew of new taxes passed during the previous session. These taxes hit retirees hard.
As a recently retired Washingtonian, and given the direction this state is and has been heading, I would argue that the best places to retire in Washington are...in Florida.

Don’t be sorry, they aren’t sorry. Real estate agents are here to make a buck, they don’t care about maintaining the quality of life in the towns they are suggesting people move to. Puyallup is full too but that isn’t stopping real estate agents from pushing the place. There’s 3 videos made encouraging people to move there in the last year. I bet the same goes for PTE.
What confuses me, is how transplants will move here and then are surprised when they receive a cold shoulder. Yeah we wanted our families to stay together, not be forced apart due to transplants moving in and jacking up the cost of what was once, affordable living.

having beach property in Ocean shores I don't know if I'd want to retire there. Hoquiam & Raymond not a chance in hell. Glad you mentioned Gig Harbor, but no Poulsbo??? Also, Kamas is a nice option in the southern part of the state. A number of folks of Eastern Oregon look at Walla walla for retiring. despite the dysfunctional HOA Sudden Valley is a beautiful place. I love Port Townsend to visit but Sequim is more retirement friendly. Finally, if I am retiring why do I care about the schools .The answer I don't

    • @doyoureadme94

Can confirm. Most of my family is retired in Sequim, due to the rain-shadows the mountain provides, tends to be fair weather most of the year which is kind to retiring bones. I would also never live in Ocean Shores let alone retire there. It’s overrun with drugs. Local addicts steal from the cars of the tourists during the summer/spring months. Naturally I would not want to be living there in the off season, when there is nobody to rob but the other locals. My best friends’ parents sold their beachfront property because the town has gone down hill so bad, their own daughter fell into heroine addiction and it was no longer a safe place for her to be, especially during vacation. I spent my entire life vacationing each spring in, Ocean Shores. I have an entire scrapbook dedicated to it. Now I can only refer to the town as, “sketchy” at best. Brought my one year old on vacation there two years ago for the first time. We were in the car waiting out front for my fiancé to check us in. A freaking teenager started walking up to the car like he didn’t realize there was a person sittin in the passenger seat and a baby in the back. Broad daylight kind you. This person clearly thought the car was running and nobody was inside, until he got close enough to realize the windows were tinted and I was staring at him like a crazy person. He literally looked at me shocked for some reason, looked around, backed up, and then ran out of the parking lot towards the retired and abandoned McDonald’s building. Yeah, we had already driven 4 hours by that point and we’re not turning around but I decided then and there, this was not the town of my childhood and we would not be coming back for a vacation ever again let alone buy a cottage there. No wonder everyone’s selling, it’s a trap.
