I give Bliss here major props for what she's done with her character. I myself have done the complete opposite with my oc, giving her a light grey coat, a dark brown mane and dull blue eyes. I don't think I'd be brave enough to make my character so bold and creative in design, and I think she has one adorable pony. :3

Usually I am absolutely against OCs like Lightning Bliss. I'm not particularly fond of Alicorn OCs and am hesitant to give OCs that seem overpowered or stereotypical a chance. However, I will admit there is something about Lightning Bliss' design that makes it not bother me as much. Maybe because it's so over the top that it's impossible to look at it as a serious character because she herself doesn't take it too seriously. Honestly, it was actually a bit refreshing, in some odd way. While adding new powers like that does make me raise my eyebrows a bit, I'm able to overcome my prejudices about that type of OC here because, again, she's not taking herself seriously and it's all in good fun. And besides, I'd be lying if I said I haven't had my share of bad OCs...
I can agree that the design really stands out. Alicorns are expected to be powerful, but makes sense that they can upset the balance of power (to me, anyway). Power can be a corrupting force if improperly handled. Speaking of which, I have awareness of one sibling of mine whose OC is an alicorn through accident. To elaborate, that OC does not originate in the MLP universe, so the magic to change forms was used. Problem is, being a person of influence of her world and their magic's double-edge/unpredictable nature, she became the one thing she doesn't like being at all. As much as I inquired, she went there to investigate for one particular pony influenced by their world that may put both realms at risk. While this is something worth of secrecy, such an incident has caught wind of at least one of my OCs in my dominion, and as a result I'm dragged in this mess for observation's sake. *facepalm* My role in my dominion is not omniscient or powerful, so I have to deal with it.

Exactly. "Standing out too much" is a factor of the world you're trying to integrate your character into. If you were using Lighting Bliss for role playing in a canonical MLP setting, I might agree that you're taking things a bit too far. By not taking yourself too seriously though, you define the world you're trying to integrate into far more loosely than that of the canonical MLP universe itself, resulting in a completely different standard for my suspension of disbelief. The canonical MLP universe has defined rules about how things work, how alicorns are created, and what creatures exist in that world, so for your character to be believable in that universe you'd have to justify stuff like why you character is an alicorn, or what's up with the lion tail and rainbow powers. Within the much more loosely defined universe your character exists in though, stuff like "rainbow-colored alicorn with a paint-brush lion tail and magic rainbow powers" is perfectly acceptable to my suspension of disbelief.
The whole thing with my OC using "powers" is that I'm realtively terrible at it... Anything beyond levitating or the "normal" way of teleporting... like unicorns, goes beyond my ability of control. Hence my rainbow travel spell...it may never work right. It will also bring about more hillarious situations of me trying to use more advanced spells but they never go right because I kinda fail as the Mary Sue OP alicorn lol! Not to mention, I like beating myself up in a funny way XD
Great Episode! Also great work by Blissy! I can relate to many things she touched upon. I'm still really new to this, but what I've decided is to simply do what I enjoy and hope to make other enjoy it as well. I know my works don't come out as often or as god as I'd like them, but still I want to make most of them.
I have to say that Lightning Bliss is a very unique with how she has her OC stand out. it really suits her for wanting to give her animation skills to be put to test. and evolving your character is a topic I never thought would come up til now. as for the video, it is awesome! I mostly liked how Lightning Bliss both entered and exited the Doc's office. a very flashy and real cute.
Lightning bliss has done a good job too on having her OC not automatically deemed as a bad OC simply because she is a alicorn. She was able to flush out her character to show that she is not a Mary Sue,though I don't really know how or why she is a alicorn but im looking forward to see her character explored to all the possibilities,all in all,she did a good job on the alicorn part.
Hey Lightning, I'm sorry to say that I've never seen you until this video, but I must say that you have done an excellent job making your OC truly original! It doesn't look like you just couldn't make up your mind when choosing a species, but had a plan for it all along. As for going overboard... It all depends on how you proceed to add these abilities to your character. Everyone would probably say that Twilight was way overpowered if the show simply went FLASH! Twilee now permanently has all four princess's magic, no trouble wielding it, and no explanation as to how! Have fun! :D It was explained in the show though, so things weren't quite so deus ex machima. (something thrown into the story from nowhere simply for plot convenience) From this video, it looks to me like you're a pretty good storyteller and have explained each of your "talents" reasonably. I say: Keep taking those risks! You're doing a wonderful job! One word of advice though, when you want to add a new ability to your OC, hint at it in a video or two before going all the way. That way it'll feel a bit more natural, just like getting rid of the cloak covering up your ears. One last thing, thanks for making your OC a good alicorn one. I've been wanting to make mine one, but due to the... how shall I put it... plethora of generic alicorn OCs? I didn't want to add another to the pile. No offence to anyone out there with an alicorn OC reading this. They're not all bad! :) P.S. Love the paintbrush! ;)

I like Lightning Blisses OC. It's unique even though she is alicorn. And I think she is one of the most appealing OCs I have seen. Her abilities are cool to. Granted my OC can control fire, use skyrim dragon shouts, and has a dimension hopping TARDIS, but rainbow travel, painting with your tale without paint. Its fantastic.

As a brony who joined the fandom for just a year, I am and have always been an alicorn. Not a rainbow one, but still an alicorn. My wish is, alicorns can be more confident being alicorns, rather than just hiding away in the fandom. I know most people won't choose being an alicorn, and they are at least okay with alicorns, still, for those who choose to be an alicorn, don't be shy, because, that's just one of the race, no matter how rare it is XD (Just don't be Mary Sue and make everyone turns against alicorns XD) (By the way, That tail is long, but not really that long. Only when the tail become more than two times the body length should you say that it's long.)

Nightlight Song Part of the reason might be that there are quite a few mary sue alicorn OCs around. But there's no doubt that, when done correctly, alicorn OCs are just like any other ponies around, just that they do something different, and that's it. So... Well, most people are quite okay with alicorns now. The only issue might just be, how to fit it in Equestria if that's necessary, since alicorns are super rare, and maybe there's some reason that caused a massacre on alicorns or something... I don't know. My OC is kinda, well, quite over-powered, his magic can create illusions that non-alicorn can't tell, but, I'd rather say that he's a unique character, since during battle his way of fighting is to persuade his opponent to stop fighting against him and gather other ponies' power when necessary.
This is a good topic! My channel is for showing some of my creative spirit and show people a bit of my world. But sometimes I'm afraid to show to much. Otherwise people will get confused about what the heck is happening.
DRWolf001 I understand what Lightning Bliss is getting at, its kinda why I have not shown my OC yet, the details I have given him is a bit much, I mean I love my OC, but his backstory is a bit much, he was originally an Alicorn who had his memories taken away as well as his Alicorn form, causing him to become a Unicorn with only a limited amount of magic, which was caused by an Evil OC I made named "Amnesia Patra - Alicorn Queen of Memories, she is sorta like Riki's biggest foe in his backstory, and he has the ability to control limitless amounts of water which is why his Cutie-mark is suppose to be the overhead veiw of a Whirlpool, with all these details i have made for him i am beginning to think that I might have slightly over did his discription, you can tell me what you think of him if you would like to, but I think having a character like that might not be the best suited to be my Brony Analyst OC for the MLP fandom.

You know, Lightning Bliss' predicament actually kinda relates to me, though I kinda just accept it. From what I've gathered, my social life has kind of just been a collection of things and small details I come across with my friends and associates. In fact, most of the time, I join in on a particular quirk just so that I can kind of be 'in it'. However, instead of just moving back to myself after the joke wears off, I end up keeping these little quirks, even when everybody else has completely forgotten them. And it still cracks them up as if its their first time hearing it. But, that's not the main issue. I think that the main thing is that there hasn't really been a very personal quirk of my interaction socially that hasn't been taken from someone or something else some time ago, even if no one remembers. But I guess I should just accept it and move on. It hasn't really been too big of a deal.
As long as the character doesn't become overpowered (i.e. a Mary-Sue, and yes that is also in reference to a certain Pink Alicorn) I see no issue if an OC's powers are just limited, similarly to how even canon alicorns have some limitations to their powers.
Uhm, I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I didn't really like your oc that much Miss Bliss, namely because of my own personal tastes. You had many nice ideas, like the lion tail or the rainbows, the goggles and the hooves. However, when they were all combined I found your oc really busy and I didn't know what was important. One thing that I just didn't like was the Alicorn-ness, but a lot of that is because I don't know -why- she is an Alicorn. I see so many ideas on your character, but as stated before I have no idea what's supposed to be important. If they're all supposed to be important that's a lot to think about... And, this is going to be a little rude of a question but I hope you realise I mean this in the most neutral way possible; how much have you -really- thought about your character? I mean, how many questions have you asked yourself about her? Do you have a reason for everything on her, like her wings & horn, tail, and method of transportation? I understand if you haven't, but those are the types of thing to keep in mind. It's one thing to create something, it's another to explain why. Typically I do leave most of my gripes to myself, but I know how important criticism is, and I saw none of that here. I absolutely loved her personality, and I found the painting with the brush-tail a very creative trick (I do love Okami).
wow this really hit home for me im not a artist i only handled small easy animations before yet i still want to do sort of what you do lightning bliss im not condident on my abilities but have found colabs to work with me but am unable to get attention without bringing forth something but i dont know how to do so with mlp without running into trouble with youtubes copyright stuff. got any tips?
If you feel your character is evolving too much, then sometimes the next best thing is to create another character to continue being creative. With thought up quirks to these characters, they could have a use of their own that perhaps your OC would be better off not doing.

DRWolf001 Hello again! I watched Mad Munchkin's video and found it quite fun and educational. Thank you again for directing me there. ^_^ I can certainly agree that an ideal avatar design should reflect one's inner self. I'm in the process of making some avatars for my own personal projects, and I must admit it's tricky to match aesthetics with personality. I just hope my final designs will be both interesting and something I am truly satisfied with. However, I can also understand the appeal in using a well-established and pleasing template as a base. Especially when we're trying to make our avatars or OCs 'cool' for the public as well as ourselves. I suppose it's a somewhat paradoxical behavior when people try to simultaneously blend in and stand out from a crowd so that they can be accepted and recognized by a community. Familiarity can be comforting and a large influence toward acceptance, which is probably why we like to follow the trends we see around us and why we gravitate toward those with similar interests as us. I'm still a novice when it comes to character building, both OC and avatar. Still, I do have some observations I hope you don't mind me sharing. When you create a character just for yourself, that character is only bound by the rules you set in your imagination. If you want to fit a character into an already established setting, you have to play by that environment's rules (for the most part at least). If you go so far as to give that character a backstory, you end up with a good number of whos, whats, whens, wheres, whys, and hows that need answering. I never thought that character creation was easy, but it's certainly a lot more complicated than I imagined. And that's just for fan works. Building an entire story world is even more complex. ^^; Sometimes, I have fun imagining how an avatar or OC could potentially fit into different story worlds. It's very interesting to consider the different roles and possibilities. And with all the OCs I've seen online, now I can't help but wonder what I would be like in the MLP-verse… Well, I think I've rambled on enough. Sorry for going on so long. My OC is both of an anthropomorphic red fox and a red pony with fox-like traits such as a red tail with a white tip and pointed ears. It may not be too creative, but I like my characters the way they are.

Whie I like Lightning Bliss, there are some aspects about the execution I don' enjoy. Sometimes, this seems like trying too hard to me. However, there is a certain genuinity about her depiction which makes the character endearable - and this doesn't always work with rainbow maned alicorns.
I think that the "line" that shouldn't be crossed is not so much a creative uniqueness one, but of social equality. This world that our OC's live in is a collective narrative, and introducing elements of Deus Ex Machina -type traits is what would be unfair in such a narrative. When u create a character in a fantasy video game, certain limits are in place to restrain such OP OCs. :) The "line" is when people are offended that their shared narrative has been hijacked by someone "not playing fairly" (by claiming OP status, etc).

As much as I inquired, she went there to investigate for one particular pony influenced by their world that may put both realms at risk. While this is something worth of secrecy, such an incident has caught wind of at least one of my OCs in my dominion, and as a result I'm dragged in this mess for observation's sake. *facepalm* My role in my dominion is not omniscient or powerful, so I have to deal with it.

It's... the alicorns. I may be irked all the same, but I tolerate them due to my experiences with my own OCs, who are from my universes. My mind is... a mess at the moment. I have a lot to think about.
Exactly. "Standing out too much" is a factor of the world you're trying to integrate your character into. If you were using Lighting Bliss for role playing in a canonical MLP setting, I might agree that you're taking things a bit too far. By not taking yourself too seriously though, you define the world you're trying to integrate into far more loosely than that of the canonical MLP universe itself, resulting in a completely different standard for my suspension of disbelief.
The canonical MLP universe has defined rules about how things work, how alicorns are created, and what creatures exist in that world, so for your character to be believable in that universe you'd have to justify stuff like why you character is an alicorn, or what's up with the lion tail and rainbow powers.
Within the much more loosely defined universe your character exists in though, stuff like "rainbow-colored alicorn with a paint-brush lion tail and magic rainbow powers" is perfectly acceptable to my suspension of disbelief.
The whole thing with my OC using "powers" is that I'm realtively terrible at it... Anything beyond levitating or the "normal" way of teleporting... like unicorns, goes beyond my ability of control. Hence my rainbow travel spell...it may never work right. It will also bring about more hillarious situations of me trying to use more advanced spells but they never go right because I kinda fail as the Mary Sue OP alicorn lol! Not to mention, I like beating myself up in a funny way XD

I can relate to many things she touched upon. I'm still really new to this, but what I've decided is to simply do what I enjoy and hope to make other enjoy it as well. I know my works don't come out as often or as god as I'd like them, but still I want to make most of them.
For me, there is NO such thing as too much creativity. The more variety, the more fun it can be. I'll be honest, LB created her OC the right way! :)
I have to say that Lightning Bliss is a very unique with how she has her OC stand out. it really suits her for wanting to give her animation skills to be put to test. and evolving your character is a topic I never thought would come up til now. as for the video, it is awesome! I mostly liked how Lightning Bliss both entered and exited the Doc's office. a very flashy and real cute.

Lightning bliss has done a good job too on having her OC not automatically deemed as a bad OC simply because she is a alicorn.
She was able to flush out her character to show that she is not a Mary Sue,though I don't really know how or why she is a alicorn but im looking forward to see her character explored to all the possibilities,all in all,she did a good job on the alicorn part.

Hey Lightning, I'm sorry to say that I've never seen you until this video, but I must say that you have done an excellent job making your OC truly original! It doesn't look like you just couldn't make up your mind when choosing a species, but had a plan for it all along.
As for going overboard... It all depends on how you proceed to add these abilities to your character. Everyone would probably say that Twilight was way overpowered if the show simply went FLASH! Twilee now permanently has all four princess's magic, no trouble wielding it, and no explanation as to how! Have fun! :D It was explained in the show though, so things weren't quite so deus ex machima. (something thrown into the story from nowhere simply for plot convenience)
From this video, it looks to me like you're a pretty good storyteller and have explained each of your "talents" reasonably. I say: Keep taking those risks! You're doing a wonderful job! One word of advice though, when you want to add a new ability to your OC, hint at it in a video or two before going all the way. That way it'll feel a bit more natural, just like getting rid of the cloak covering up your ears.
One last thing, thanks for making your OC a good alicorn one. I've been wanting to make mine one, but due to the... how shall I put it... plethora of generic alicorn OCs? I didn't want to add another to the pile. No offence to anyone out there with an alicorn OC reading this. They're not all bad! :)

I like Lightning Blisses OC. It's unique even though she is alicorn. And I think she is one of the most appealing OCs I have seen. Her abilities are cool to. Granted my OC can control fire, use skyrim dragon shouts, and has a dimension hopping TARDIS, but rainbow travel, painting with your tale without paint. Its fantastic.

As a brony who joined the fandom for just a year, I am and have always been an alicorn. Not a rainbow one, but still an alicorn. My wish is, alicorns can be more confident being alicorns, rather than just hiding away in the fandom. I know most people won't choose being an alicorn, and they are at least okay with alicorns, still, for those who choose to be an alicorn, don't be shy, because, that's just one of the race, no matter how rare it is XD
(Just don't be Mary Sue and make everyone turns against alicorns XD)
(By the way, That tail is long, but not really that long. Only when the tail become more than two times the body length should you say that it's long.)

But there's no doubt that, when done correctly, alicorn OCs are just like any other ponies around, just that they do something different, and that's it.
So... Well, most people are quite okay with alicorns now. The only issue might just be, how to fit it in Equestria if that's necessary, since alicorns are super rare, and maybe there's some reason that caused a massacre on alicorns or something... I don't know.
My OC is kinda, well, quite over-powered, his magic can create illusions that non-alicorn can't tell, but, I'd rather say that he's a unique character, since during battle his way of fighting is to persuade his opponent to stop fighting against him and gather other ponies' power when necessary.

DRWolf001 I understand what Lightning Bliss is getting at, its kinda why I have not shown my OC yet, the details I have given him is a bit much, I mean I love my OC, but his backstory is a bit much, he was originally an Alicorn who had his memories taken away as well as his Alicorn form, causing him to become a Unicorn with only a limited amount of magic, which was caused by an Evil OC I made named "Amnesia Patra - Alicorn Queen of Memories, she is sorta like Riki's biggest foe in his backstory, and he has the ability to control limitless amounts of water which is why his Cutie-mark is suppose to be the overhead veiw of a Whirlpool, with all these details i have made for him i am beginning to think that I might have slightly over did his discription, you can tell me what you think of him if you would like to, but I think having a character like that might not be the best suited to be my Brony Analyst OC for the MLP fandom.

You know, Lightning Bliss' predicament actually kinda relates to me, though I kinda just accept it. From what I've gathered, my social life has kind of just been a collection of things and small details I come across with my friends and associates. In fact, most of the time, I join in on a particular quirk just so that I can kind of be 'in it'. However, instead of just moving back to myself after the joke wears off, I end up keeping these little quirks, even when everybody else has completely forgotten them. And it still cracks them up as if its their first time hearing it.
But, that's not the main issue. I think that the main thing is that there hasn't really been a very personal quirk of my interaction socially that hasn't been taken from someone or something else some time ago, even if no one remembers.
But I guess I should just accept it and move on. It hasn't really been too big of a deal.

As long as the character doesn't become overpowered (i.e. a Mary-Sue, and yes that is also in reference to a certain Pink Alicorn) I see no issue if an OC's powers are just limited, similarly to how even canon alicorns have some limitations to their powers.
I would say, to Bliss, to do what makes her happy. So long as she isn't hurting anyone. Regardless someone is gonna complain.

Uhm, I'm going to play devil's advocate here. I didn't really like your oc that much Miss Bliss, namely because of my own personal tastes. You had many nice ideas, like the lion tail or the rainbows, the goggles and the hooves. However, when they were all combined I found your oc really busy and I didn't know what was important. One thing that I just didn't like was the Alicorn-ness, but a lot of that is because I don't know -why- she is an Alicorn.
I see so many ideas on your character, but as stated before I have no idea what's supposed to be important. If they're all supposed to be important that's a lot to think about... And, this is going to be a little rude of a question but I hope you realise I mean this in the most neutral way possible; how much have you -really- thought about your character? I mean, how many questions have you asked yourself about her? Do you have a reason for everything on her, like her wings & horn, tail, and method of transportation? I understand if you haven't, but those are the types of thing to keep in mind. It's one thing to create something, it's another to explain why.
Typically I do leave most of my gripes to myself, but I know how important criticism is, and I saw none of that here. I absolutely loved her personality, and I found the painting with the brush-tail a very creative trick (I do love Okami).

If you feel your character is evolving too much, then sometimes the next best thing is to create another character to continue being creative. With thought up quirks to these characters, they could have a use of their own that perhaps your OC would be better off not doing.

I can certainly agree that an ideal avatar design should reflect one's inner self. I'm in the process of making some avatars for my own personal projects, and I must admit it's tricky to match aesthetics with personality. I just hope my final designs will be both interesting and something I am truly satisfied with. However, I can also understand the appeal in using a well-established and pleasing template as a base. Especially when we're trying to make our avatars or OCs 'cool' for the public as well as ourselves. I suppose it's a somewhat paradoxical behavior when people try to simultaneously blend in and stand out from a crowd so that they can be accepted and recognized by a community. Familiarity can be comforting and a large influence toward acceptance, which is probably why we like to follow the trends we see around us and why we gravitate toward those with similar interests as us.
I'm still a novice when it comes to character building, both OC and avatar. Still, I do have some observations I hope you don't mind me sharing. When you create a character just for yourself, that character is only bound by the rules you set in your imagination. If you want to fit a character into an already established setting, you have to play by that environment's rules (for the most part at least). If you go so far as to give that character a backstory, you end up with a good number of whos, whats, whens, wheres, whys, and hows that need answering. I never thought that character creation was easy, but it's certainly a lot more complicated than I imagined. And that's just for fan works. Building an entire story world is even more complex. ^^;
Sometimes, I have fun imagining how an avatar or OC could potentially fit into different story worlds. It's very interesting to consider the different roles and possibilities. And with all the OCs I've seen online, now I can't help but wonder what I would be like in the MLP-verse…

My OC is both of an anthropomorphic red fox and a red pony with fox-like traits such as a red tail with a white tip and pointed ears. It may not be too creative, but I like my characters the way they are.

Whie I like Lightning Bliss, there are some aspects about the execution I don' enjoy. Sometimes, this seems like trying too hard to me. However, there is a certain genuinity about her depiction which makes the character endearable - and this doesn't always work with rainbow maned alicorns.

Well, in the end you need to decide what's too much or too little. At least your OC looks and is creative.
I think that the "line" that shouldn't be crossed is not so much a creative uniqueness one, but of social equality. This world that our OC's live in is a collective narrative, and introducing elements of Deus Ex Machina -type traits is what would be unfair in such a narrative. When u create a character in a fantasy video game, certain limits are in place to restrain such OP OCs. :)
The "line" is when people are offended that their shared narrative has been hijacked by someone "not playing fairly" (by claiming OP status, etc).
