    I have a 2012 Rock Warrior with the 5.7L. I purchased the truck with 25k on it. The truck has made that same noise from the day I purchased it and still does to the day. The truck gets Mobil 1 5w20 synthetic oil every 5k with a premium WIX oil filter. It currently has 350,000 miles on it and runs like a champion. In fact it runs so good I just drove it 800 miles to my family farm. Hooked up a 25 ft gooseneck trailer and hauled 4 loads of round hay bales at 1200lbs each 40 miles 1 direction. The noise is extremely annoying, but mine is proof, it doesn't affect performance. Mine does it every day upon start up until the engine temperature gets up to almost normal and the stops.
    I have replaced all the cam's, lifters, timing chain, guides, tensioners, actuators, plugs, coils, and nothing has changed it.
    My advice........ drive it..... you won't find a better truck

    Timing chain tensioner is not putting tension on the chain. Put some marvel mystery oil in and see if it will clean the debris out of the tensioner. That's why you keep your oil changes on schedule.

      I just put some sea foam into my engine, similar tick started about 30,000 miles ago. I have about 230,000 miles on my 2011 tundra. I have had the sea foam in for about 80 miles, and plan to leave it in until I get about 400 miles on it or so to clean stuff out. But even with the 80 miles the tick has been dramatically reduced. Went from happening almost every time I start the engine to, trying to figure out if it’s still doing it or not, now. Lol anyway I will update folks once I get to 400 miles on it.

    Mines in the shop right now for the same issue. It’s the timing chain tensioner on bank one. Toyota needs to do a recall but hasn’t yet. Sound comes and goes. Tensioner works half the time. When the tensioner doesn’t work, the timing chain guide slaps against the tensioner causing the noise. That was my issue anyway.

    I found a post for this issue on my truck that seems to suggest it is the variable valve timing gear assembly on the rear of the cam. There is a protruding boss that is supposed to lick into a detent in the cam advance mechanism that apparently gets a notch worn in it which prevents it from locking in like it is supposed to so it flaps around. Still have to get into mine to verify this but the noise, diagrams and engine diagnostics all made sense. Also why it goes away when it does finally lock in.

    Unless you have your own shop and are a mechanic unafraid of tearing the front of your engine apart, getting to the timing chain tensioner is a $2,500 service from the Toyota dealership.
    Regardless, to be able to tell my mechanic the sound that my truck is making the audio in this video is perfect.

    This sounds like the VVT unit is hitting its end stops - normal at startup until oil pressure is up for letting the computer adjust cam timing. Maybe an oil blockage or using oil too heavy. Only 0-20 or 5-20 oil should be in this engine. Considering the rest of this trucks lousy condition, especially the dusty throttle body, I suspect poor oil and air filter change routines were used also - may have lacquer or dusty oil blockage or the bank solenoids are sticking. If the air filter failed, the oil filter isn't far behind and the oil bypass would let dirty oil everywhere. I know from my 08 5.7 that squirrels or mice like the taste of the air filter media.

    Every 60k miles the valve cups should be adjusted and clearanced to prevent this noise.
    The shim in one or more cups could also be dislodged. Or the 5.7 are also prone to valve springs breaking.

    • @rosadoja2000
      @rosadoja2000 3 года назад +1

      @@WVFAN1958 not sure. I bought the engine used from a salvage yard, it came out of a 2017 theft recovery and said it had about 30k miles. When I opened up the front of the engine I found someone had messed with the timing prior to me. The sprockets were marked with a paint marker and the timing chain was installed with the marks facing in and not synced with the cam gears. Anyhow, I cleaned up that whole mess. I tuned in to that issue because I noticed the timing chain slap was getting pretty bad at idle, I could hear it from inside the cab when waiting at a red light. Look "loose timing chain Toyota tundra" on RUclips and a few videos come up where they identify the symptom and cross your fingers you don't have to do that job.

    • @rosadoja2000
      @rosadoja2000 2 года назад +1

      @@teamhogmeat Yes, riming chain job did it for me and have not had this issue sonce. i took a "now that you're here" approach and replaced sprockets, guides, tensioners, chains, and crank shaft seal while I had the front cover open. It took me about a week working on it in the evenings after work and cost nearly $1000 in parts because I used all factory parts. I didn't buy aftermarket parts. It's not a difficult job, just make sure you get TDC right before you take it all apart.
