This is a great interview! Norman Chan asks great questions and Fon Davis gives great answers. There were no weird tangents. Only interesting conversation. It stays on subject and is a true expression of passion for ones work.
I hold this dude up there as some sort of an "idol". Seems extremely down to earth and I think it's awesome he took time to help out film makers that are just starting out. Great work Tested!
Fon, always great to hear you talking about practical effects. It was a real pleasure to work with you and looking forward to seeing you create even more magic in the coming years! Good luck.
there is so much useful info in this interview, i've paused it to research the magazines, people and techniques described. Fon is very giving and no BS. I appreciate that. fantastic interview! thank you for creating and sharing.
Another great interview Norm! I just wish we had a chance to see more of his shop and facilities. It's interesting to see how different people setup their work areas and organize their space. Thank you
Great interview Norm! (also wanted to let you know that I noticed the depth of field of your cameras was different, so the hammer and box fan behind you was a little distracting, muwahaha)
ok so I know how to do the practical effects, I have been in it for 11 years, but I cannot get anything to pick up. how do you get the movie parts to show what you can do?
Man this was awesome. I have a question I hope someone could answer. How can you get in to/ or learn about miniature model making for films? It may or may not matter but I live on the other side of the country.
I'm sure there were several people that just began googling "Henry Selick" and were shocked to hear that Tim Burton didn't actually direct Nightmare Before Christmas.

I love how you guys do your Maker interviews/meets, they feel like just two regular guys having a conversation. Great job Norm!

Great interview! THis is so much better than watching you guys sit around gabbing to one another.

Christian Shattuck
Perhaps is just for ShowReel. nevertheless I want so badly to see the result xD
Seemed like a great tease by a smart man. Excellent puppet design. Will be watching for this.

Great video, I'd love to hear about practical effects all the time. Also, this guy reminds me of Brad Pitt for some reason!

16:12 - 16:22 crazy shadow moving about in the upper left windowpane
Really good stuff, also was that the weird monster guy form Naked Lunch hanging on the wall?
Please tell me that usagi Yojimbo shot means there making a UY movie pleazzzz
Great interview Norm! (also wanted to let you know that I noticed the depth of field of your cameras was different, so the hammer and box fan behind you was a little distracting, muwahaha)
...was that a still for a Usagi Yojimbo movie?!
he talked about MakeMagazine.. .I kind of gave up on them youtube channel, a lot of makers that I like were not making videos any more
II think there should have been some shots of his work so we could become more familiar with it. The interview was good.
I’d like to hear a podcast like this. Weekly long form interviews with FX people.
ok so I know how to do the practical effects, I have been in it for 11 years, but I cannot get anything to pick up. how do you get the movie parts to show what you can do?
great interview
WWII buffs here too! War genre is a part of history.
Well done! Good stuf!
What's the Usagi Yojimbo stuff? A pet project or a real [commercial] thing?
Man this was awesome. I have a question I hope someone could answer. How can you get in to/ or learn about miniature model making for films? It may or may not matter but I live on the other side of the country.
I'm sure there were several people that just began googling "Henry Selick" and were shocked to hear that Tim Burton didn't actually direct Nightmare Before Christmas.
Such a cool guy, would love to work with him.
Got any recommendations for documentaries or making of ...'s about practical special effects? I feel like I've seen them all up to this point ;_;
try fx phd for making of 's
What's the point of double-winding the film for Nightmare Before Christmas?
Oh wow...lots of Quik-Stiks in that mech cockpit. :-)
What is the name of the graphic novel please?
Any movie with practical effects, automatically gets a better score than any with digital effects.
What an interesting guy.
Is dat sum Usagi Yojimbo?
That's definitely Usagi Yojimbo. Are we getting a Usagi Yojimbo movie? Or is that from a Robot Chicken sketch?
jenumba That is what I would love to know myself.

I notice this shop has the same Naked Lunch Mugwump hanging in the corner as Jamies shop
I just visited his website, I have to say the MORAV Gen 4 is pretty damn sexy.
I hope he realises a lot of the dinosaurs and such in Jurassic Park were real puppets and animatronics.
This guy should be on tv. (jk, youtubes)
I'm pretty sure he is a big fan of Gundam
Oh look....A hammer. Just laying around in a Prop Shop. Like it is important.
Yup...man I chose the wrong thing huh? ;)
I love this comment. :-)
So MORAV is still alive? Hot damn!
My mind prefers physical effects most of the time...whenever possible.
FIRST comments suck
Looks like an asian Brad Pitt
He really does ! Haha :)
:D
4th jijij
Is it just me or this guy looks, acts and sounds like an illegitimate child of Brad Pitt and Angry Joe?
Practical effects suck, CG is better.
