A live, semi-improvised jam centred around Novation's new little groovebox. I started out this hardware journey on the original Circuit, and since then have tried one or two pieces of gear, but it's a real pleasure to come back to my first inspiration. The Circuit Tracks is a brilliant iteration on the Circuit's design, adding a pair of mono audio inputs and two dedicated MIDI tracks, as well a bunch of other quality of life stuff. It was a great place to start into hardware sequencing and performance before, but now it's basically my first choice whenever someone says they are looking for where to start out.
Kudos to the Volca series, as well, for offering analog sound and decent interfaces at ridiculously good prices. The Volca Bass and Keys both sound great, with the Keys especially having a lo-fi quality to it (love that reverb). Paired with the Circuit, they really come alive.
Novation Circuit Tracks - Drums, two synths, audio routing and effects
Korg Volca Bass - Arp-sort-of-thing
Korg Volca Keys - Pad
Written and recorded over a 48-hour period, performed live, and with compression, EQ, and limiting on the master.

🙌✊
It is in my favourites and I keep listening to this over and over for years.
Brilliant. More circuit tracks jams please.
This tune has literally been in my head all day.
Incredible composition.
I also appreciate that you don't talk over the music but clearly show and explain what you are doing.
I love my Tracks and Volca Bass. These budget pieces of gear absolutely prove that you don’t need to dump thousands to make good music. Excellent jam. I also love just tweaking the frequency while playing with the muting on the mixer. Such a fun way to make the most out of one sequence.
Four-on-the-floor challenge met without any doubt! 🤩
That was an awesome example of what you can do with the circuit
I really loved this piece of music. Uplifting with positive anticipation of what was coming next. It really held my attention with moments of wandering imagination here and there. Great work. More please.
I love how no matter what you’re making music on, it always has that “Jay” sound.
I’m grateful mate. I just started my journey in the DAW-less universe with circuit and seeing how you handle those pieces of hardware to make an amazing jam is inspiring, insightful and motivating. You’ve got a new subscriber!
Finally a great demo of the Tracks!
this song is so cool bro
Just starting out in Synths and have purchased the Circuit Tracks. Thank you for such an informative video.
Best channel for actual demos, with good musical style, and nice text explanations.
Thanks for sharing. I found the music very pleasant. It demonstrated the unit well and was better than a review video as far as conceptualizing the NC.
Very nice! Came over here from the Midlife Synthesist! Subbed!
Always a pleasure to see the synth master at work, cheers Jay
hey, thats cool, i have a circuit tracks and a volca bass and volca sample, where do you get the syx midi templates from? cheers
Goodness! Love it! I was already climbing the fence to save up for a Tracks and now I don't think I can get over the fence fast enough. Thanks for your videos. They're awesome!
best circuit tracks jam on the internet!
The "Hoskianna" is BURNING here ! So Sweet to open the browser , and a New JH tune has ticked in ! Thank You Jay - You...Are...The...Best...!
I just got a Circuit Tracks but really no idea how to use it. This helps and inspires. 👏👏👏
Circuit Monostation, Tracks, and forthcoming Rhythm are awesome. Now Novation need to make a Circuit-sequencer-based multitrack to compete with Roland Verselab and similar.
With the volca fm it will be mind blowiing
killer demo and knowledge sharing... i am DEFINITELY gonna get circuit tracks now lol very soon....
Listen, I love this song and need it on Spotify ASAP plz. Thanks :)
Fantastic Jam.
This video sold me on buying this setup.
So inspiring!
Nice! How many projects with multiple instruments and parts can you fit inside that box? I'm thinking of buying one because I'm out of project space on my Keystep Pro. Thanks!
I've been thinking about which drum machine to buy... Then I saw this and realised that the Circuit actually could give more than just drums!
Better than most stuff I hear on commercial radio! Awesome!
this was really nice
This was dooope! I got 2 Volca FMs and about to buy a Circuit Tracks today! I'm so excited to finally get my hands on one!
Lovely composition, you got an almost analogue sound out of the Circuit synth engine to complement the analogue Volcas. I will be upgrading from my OG circuit to the circuit tracks soon. Thanks for uploading this and for your helpful notes as to what you're doing. I tend to use the mixer to cut and open/fade parts, too. I think I'll be using the midi tracks a lot as well as the probability and scenes, too.
Great track!
Very well explained video. Many thanks.
I think the Volcas pair nicely with the new Circuit. I plan on hooking mine up with the FM and NuBass when it gets here.
dude, this is amazing!
Awesome video, thank you. I have all of the volcas and this seems like a perfect partner to them!
so sick!!!
So good !!
Ok i just ordered a Tracks. More of these jams plz :)
Great work!
If only I had discovered the Circuit Tracks earlier.
So inspiring❤
Nice track.
The Volca keys really has a lovely tone. Never selling mine.
Great little track sir.
Ill have this soon, got bored of my volca, it needs a mate, p.s can i hook up my TB 303 to the circuit breaker?
Circuit eh hmmm got me thinking but then I am always doing that when I see gear. Like what you're doing with it though really nice demo.
Very Nice track
Excellent Jay, really enjoyed this Jam. Great Recording & Performance, well worked.
Thanks
Really enjoyed that, great work!
Fun and useful, thanks!
I am volca gear fan, great work !
i love the novation circuit tracks too
There are absolutely times I miss my original Circuit and Mono Station. Such a delightful interface!
I just picked up a Mono Station for this reason too! Criminally underrated.
@@JayHosking criminally underrated!
Excited for when they release the new sampler
The Monostation is so badass but for some reason didn't catch on with the general public. Novation and Arturia are really the best when it comes to creating digital interfaces to control analog voices. Astounding they haven't added an arp to the Circuit though. I wonder what that's about. Like the head designer is against arpeggiators or something.
@@TROGULAR10000 I think they really missed the mark with not adding the diode filter from the BS2. I think that probably hurt them the most with that product.
I’m just glad I got mine at the clearance price when they were in the last batch and just when patch flip came out.
This is brilliant and played it many times today, well done 👏
I'm completely new to hardware production. What cables would I need to use the CT with the volca keys and a PO-33? I also have to run them through a 3.5mm passive mixer. Love this jam 🙂🙂🙂
You'll need a 1/8" to 1/8" mini cable to get sync to the Pocket Operator, plus a 5-pin MIDI cable to get MIDI to the Volca, and then audio cables from the devices to the mixer. And thanks!
@@JayHosking thanks so much for the help! ill see if i can find them online 😁😁
Great music ... thank you so much dear Jay - GOOD LUCK !
Great video, great track. I have one stuck in backorder limbo right now, can't wait to get my hands on it.
This was incredible
great track. Seems great to get that much sound for such a good price. well done
¡Gracias!
This was just what I needed to see for the circuit tracks!! Being a volca lover I wanted to see how these worked together. Are you controlling the volcas with midi on this? Or just using midi for sync? Outstanding demo either way💯
Controlling the Volcas with MIDI (and not using the Volca sequencers). And thanks!
i got question. how can i sync this music with traktor. i want build my setup with allen heat px5 mixer and traktor x1 mk3. In future i want add some extra drum machines or small setup like this. How can i sync it. allen heat mixer got midi out. Traktor can send midi signal too. How to mange this ??
Incredible...
This is so freaking good!
so dope! great work
In this configuration, could I still attach a midi keyboard to trigger all three devices? if so, how would I do that?
Awesome Video
The tracks fixed my biggest problem with the original Circuit - not knowing what the knobs were assigned to. Always irked me
Very impressive! I have the original circuit. Can I hook up volcano to it too? Will their sequencers sync?
top sound from a tidy set up!
How did you add the compression, EQ, and limiting on the master? Also what was the Volca Keys purpose in the setup? Great job dude, best circuit jam video I have found yet!
I applied the master-level effects in the box with a couple of plug-ins. The Volca keys was one of the voices, a pad. And thanks!
Thanks
Wow, thank you!
@@JayHosking I wish I could give more... But I wanted to show how grateful I am... This is my kind of jam. I bought the NCT after I saw this.... paired it with my Korg Monologue and a Meris Polymoon + EHX looper ... then bought the Rhythm for sampling .... You were the original inspiration THX SO MUCH ..
(I am actually therapist and and music is my therapy... I saw your video and you made me realise what my favourite new therapy is for myself...making music not just listening... Ableton Live never appeared to me. I needed a Dawless setup and you showed me what was possible
Really great song! Really left me hanging with coming in with that second bass note though 😄
Hah!
Sounds Jaytastic! Beats and greetz from Germany! 🎶🎵🎧🤖👌
This track is everything!!! Make more w tracks and V-keys please! Do u have a microfreak? Make a video w that too if u have it 🙏🏼
Superb!
Hey Jay! what cable solution are you using to connect the volcas to the circuit? The circuit’s inputs are mono unbalanced, I think?
Sounds good dude. Thanks for sharing 👍
Can you chain drum patterns and effects to them like rolls and what not?
I find it inspirational ... and I like the vibe, especiall\y second part ...
Great music. Do you see the Circuit Tracks as an entry level hardware only? Or would you see it being used in a professional (as in, "big venue") live setting?
I imagine that most people will feel the limitations of it after playing with it for an extended amount of time. However, playing within those limitations, I'm sure you could do live sets with it in a big setting. And thanks!
GREAT track! Q: wondering how you got that bass note progression with just 32 step (2 bar) sequence limit? BPM around 125?
Simply amazing!
I really love what you do. Stupid question, though… isn’t it easier for a beginner to use a DAW as sequencer? I started with a DAW and virtual instruments. Then I added some sliders to control some VSTs. Then bought two hardware synths, controlled by the DAW. I’m more and more tempted by a DAWless setup, as I feel it could help my creative process. But I fear the learning curve (again) of a HW sequencer… it’s overwhelming…. Any advice? Thanks!
Not a stupid question! DAW is a great place to start for nearly anything music-related. And there are plenty of artists that use solely the DAW for sequencing. Just do what works for you! The main benefits of a hardware sequencer for me are on the side of performability and tactility, though the portability is also a big factor. If you do decide to go with hardware sequencing, I'd start with something that makes intuitive sense to you; for me, my entry point was the Circuit. I'd been making music for ages before, but the Circuit made me remember that music is meant to be performed, not simply recorded. In the beginning I hated the deep and complicated sequencers (e.g. Elektron) but now I'm really drawn to them, so I imagine you'll just find your way as you go. Best of luck, and remember that just using the DAW is fine if it works for you!
@@JayHosking Thanks Jay. I feel that learning all the DAW functionalities has been a bit overwhelming for me. I'm at a stage where I think that a HW groovebox could help me "go back to basics" and just enjoy jamming and turning knobs. More immediate pleasure, I guess... The Circuit Tracks seems a nice option to control my Korg Minilogue and Behringer model D... The Circuit looks rather intuitive, from what I could see on RUclips.
Flat out great song.
Ideal first set up. Great music Jay.
Incredible yet again! Thanks Jay!
Great track mate , i got those hardware , but still have not connected it all up , any tips ?
Just run the MIDI out from the Circuit Tracks to the MIDI in of one of the Volcas, and away you go! If you use both Volcas, you'll need a MIDI Thru box to split the MIDI out of the Circuit, and you'll need to set them to different MIDI channels. Best of luck!
Amazing videos. Thank you!!
Great music and emotion coming from just a few pieces of gear! Love it!
I haven’t been able to set my Korg synth up on the midi channel so I can control it from the CT…. You’re gonna tell me to read the manual, right :(😢
Love it! Challenge complete
Awesome stuff Jay thank you very much, very informative and also nice and simple, yet still has a vibe and one that resonated. I'd love something longer sometime, something moody and ambient, a journey. Hope you're well Jay
Agreed. It's time to get back to some more ambient pieces. I've got a really special synth coming and I'll be hooking it up to the NDLR straight away. And thanks so much!
@@JayHosking Awesome, that's something to look forward to!
Excellent!! i have a question, how do you connect volcas and circuit, use midi and sync ? thanks!! Cheers From Argentina!
Just using standard MIDI. And thanks!
Thanks!!!
Man I dig your setup. Thanks for the groove.
