I am white and I had no clue the hard work and artwork it took for black hair. I will tell you a story I hope everyone will find funny. When I was in my 20s I had shoulder length hair. I told the beautician I wanted an inch taken off and and a body perm only .. I stressed body perm. I wear glasses so I can't see anything until my haircut is done. It felt like I was in trouble as she rolled my hair in the perm rods but I told myself to calm down. I told myself she knew what she was doing. At last she was done so I put my glasses on and low and behold I had an afro so short all I could do was cry. When I got home I called a black coworker who said calm down when your perm relaxes it won't be so short. She had me stand in front of the mirror and stretch a lock out and sure enough it was at least 3 inches long which was way to short but I could live with it. I kept crying so she said go get a relaxer. I had never heard of a relaxer but she assured me it would get the perm out. She didn't know I had no clue how a relaxer worker so she didn't explain it to me. I didn't read the instructions very well so I kept combing my hair and sticking it down to my head. The next day when we met in the hallway she and I laughed our rears off because yes I did have straight hair and yes it was longer than I thought it was going to be but I had a crease all around the crown of my head. It looked like someone ironed a crease in my hair much like crease you would press into the sleeve of a shirt. I sort of looked like I had an old flapper girls haircut. All I needed was the fringed dress and long pearls. She passed away many years ago and I dearly miss her.
