  • Footage showing UK and USMC F-35Bs being prepared and launched. Plus air to air refuelling with RAF voyager during the missions.
Aircraft from the carrier are flying missions as part of Operation SHADER, now a mopping-up operation against what remains of Daesh/Islamic State.

Well well well @ 0:42 we see the pilot trigger the lift fan BEFORE dead stop to save time. I have been wanting/waiting/assuming that pilots would start to do this to improve (reduce) takeoff times.
    Previous:
    Dead stop:
While they drink their coffee they open up lift fan system.
Then they turn on - engage lift fan (a VERY distinct sound comes from that system when engaged).
    Then they throttle up.
    Then they take off.
Now, we see multiple operations occurring at the same time. Pilots are clearly getting better and more familiar with the F35.
So, pilot had not even come to a stop, he had the lift fan doors open WHILE the taxi process and even triggered the clutch (engagement) of the lift fan to save time.
so, this was GREAT to see, and I of course expected this to occur. So while they taxi - lift system can be setup.
It takes a catapult system 120 seconds (two minutes) to launch a jet.
Now that they are "starting" to press the buttons and get things all up and running WHILE they taxi to runway, then all that jazz and time is thus eliminated!
Very very nice to see. That suggests a launch time down in the 15 seconds range. about 8 times the rate of a catapult. Nice!!!
    Example of a catapult launch:
120 seconds - one jet launched
    ruclips.net/video/cWOpDItw1iI/видео.html
    4 Harriers in 40 seconds:
    ruclips.net/video/fb7ZlZBDpEQ/видео.html
And what else did EVERYONE note about the takeoff? Why of course the LENGTH of the runway. Remember, the payload and fuel is what determines the length of the run up to the ramp. Previous? Geesh - they were almost starting their runs at the ramp!!!! (low fuel, no weapons = very short run to ramp).
Now? Well with a real fuel load, and real weapons - the length the run is now MUCH longer then in previous videos. You note for security purposes - not one clip shows the full run, and that of course is to hide the payloads and fuel they are running.
However, to be fair, you can much determine where on the decks they are starting these runs. (answer: a LOT longer then before!!!).

The interoperations was a good idea. To be fair, they had expected to get more F35's from Lockheed (they can't keep up with orders right now). So, this deployment and sharing of training is no doubt a great opportunity for the USA pilots and vice versa. I mean do you think there was a shortage of USA pilots when asked would they join the HMS Q for a deployment? I can bet they jumped at this chance. That ship is a worlds largest STOVL ship, and it's design and layout is 2nd to none.. Also, without a full air wing, then pilots get much nicer living arrangements. If I was a pilot and had this chance? Hell ya - i would jump on this!
And we do have to give credit to the brilliant Rolls Royce lift fan system. They really were the only ones with 50+ years of running STVOL jets (Harrier). This is really the first time in history that VSTOL jets can be deployed with weapons and payloads that rival super carriers with catapults. All in all, this has turned out to be a incredible ship and setup.

We should build a third aircraft carrier and a stealth bomber or ask the Americans about acquiring the B-21. If they say no after moaning so much for the last so many years about increasing defence spending then we should then work on our own or with allies like Sweden and Italy as we are doing with Tempest. China and Russia are both currently in advanced work on a stealth bomber and have prototypes flying. We need to plug this hole in our defences because there are certain things that only a heavy bomber can do, that a sub, carriers and F-35's, destroyers, cannot. We spend far too much on the Welfare State, NHS and benefits and far too little on defence which is insurance on the house.

So you need to supply twice as much, which costs more as you need to fuel the ships to get to the QE class, you also need more ships to carry the diesel for the ship, jet fuel and armament. Nuclear has unlimited range, is faster, are larger, carry more aircraft, have better sortie rates, require less maintenance, have power for future laser weapons, have more room for jet fuel and armament do to the ship not needing diesel, etc. As stated above nuclear is better other then initial cost. I’m not sure, but I don’t think the US Marines use catapult launches for this version of the F35 - it’s the vertical or short take off version. It’s the US navy that uses the naval variant. Just a guess…

Your "guess" was actually a very good one. USMC F-35B's are not flown off of catapult assisted carriers, they use amphibious assault ships and take off and land just like the British pilots. F-35C's on the other hand, which are flown by the Navy, ARE flown from conventional catapult assisted carriers.@@richardpoynton4026

    • @Gsmooth10455
      @Gsmooth10455 9 месяцев назад

@@RJM1011 True that Marine Corps pilots have always flown Harriers from Amphibious Asault ships, but what's with the "no catapult crap"? We've always used BOTH STOVL and CATOBAR. What's the difference you may ask between the F35B and the F35C? Although the F-35B can do short takeoffs and landings, it also has the disadvantage of having the smallest range of the three variants, and it is also the least maneoverable of the three. This is because the engine of the F-35B with its lift fan take up more space in the fuselage limiting its gas tanks. The F-35C on the other hand has the largest wings, enabling it to carry more fuel out of the three variants, and is the biggest of the three variants, which enables it to have the greatest range by far, although it is not as maneoverable as the F-35A. Conventional carriers like the Gerald Ford and all Nimitz class carriers besides being bigger than all Ambhibious Assault ships, also have a huge advantage over them and HMS QE and HMS POW. They can launch and recover the E2D-Hawkeyes which are the highly sophisticated Naval versions of the USAF's AWACS. Sorry but the Amphibious assault ships along with the QE and POW can't do that. Conventional carriers also utilise the EA-G18 Growlers which are solely for electronic warfare. Again sorry but the Amphibious assault ships, along with QE and POW DON'T have that capability.

I always think the way the fan door opened is very bad and ugly, i mean why not made the door open sideways with a split doors just like the one behind it, or like a front landing gear door.. to lift open massive door like that facing to the front is creating a big drag like a massive air brake open.. or is it to create drag intentionally so that the aircraft didn't go to fast?

    • @Benjd0

It's the intake for the lift fan, early prototypes didn't have this, so I'm assuming the extra air it pulls into the lift fan counteracts any drag it causes.

They can carry a decent bit more than the Harrier when doing a vertical landing, but not a full load, it would take a pretty big jump in engine technology to do that.
