TOP REASONS to Play Ableton Push in Chromatic Mode (And Why In Key Mode Is Holding You Back)

- Top reasons to play Ableton Push in chromatic mode. In this video, I go over the main reasons why it's better to learn to play push in chromatic mode rather than "in key" mode.
Playing Ableton Push with "in key" mode on is how many people begin playing push. However, it's very limiting and might be preventing you from progressing with your chord progressions and melodies. Want to play along with other musicians? Chances are you will need to know how to play in chromatic mode.

Man, if you came out with a whole book for playing Push 2 like this, I'd purchase it in a heartbeat. Great video!
Right on, thanks! Maybe I’ll include a book with the course I’m making :)
Same
Same here
New Push 3 User here (first device like this ever) - is that course done you spoke about here? Really interested, because you the way you teach here is exactly what I search for! I’m a classical violinist (professional) and therefore I need this more theory-based approach to learning my new instrument (being the push 3 😉)
@@jxmieblake There's a course coming?! Awesome!!!
Man your video "this instrument will blow your mind" was a big influence in me getting a Push 2.
That's dope!
So glad you’re back! I love your Push videos, especially when you talk about theory and how to build chords and progressions. Keep it coming, please.
Yesss you are back!
Great vid! Still learning the Push and I kinda felt like chromatic was the way to go, glad to see I'm not alone
I really love your videos. I'm a differently abled musician. It was really hard to play 7th and 9th chords with one hand. Thanks to you I am making some progress. Thank you JB! Can't thank you enough. 💖
I’d love to see you explore the new MPE stuff on Push3 and pitch bending etc. I often left my push2 in key mode and really would like to use the new pads in exciting ways
Will definitely post more MPE stuff!
Come back and watch this every so often - thanks for the excellent video 👌👌
Great video Jamie! thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Zain!
Very useful and inspirational. Thank you
You have me convinced. Thank you
This is really good lesson. I'll practice that, thank you for your kindness. and your videos... I feel so comfortable.
That's great to hear, thank you for your support
I love the synth you used lol, sounds so good, especially the Emin9 chord 😍
Thanks! Keyscape ftw 😊
I love the video with the 43 chord voicings. Very helpful! Thank you 🧔🏽🙏🏽
Glad you dig it!
These are great reasons for using the 64 pad layout in chromatic mode. I sometimes use in key mode to play melodies over my chords because I can play freely and very fast runs then in chromatic mode. I could do a video explaining this ideas?
Great video bro! Love it!
Thank you bro! Appreciate the love
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome Chord Sounds and finally I can play on the push now. Super Happy. What sound you are using for this btw? Its sounding amazing. Looking forward for more such tutorials on such cool sounding chords :)
MORE PUSH VIDEOS!
love it.youre a great teacher . does push 2 display that black and white keys in the LCD screen?that shows what keys and chords are being played
Also, if you can mention what patches, synths, your using would be much appreciated. Thanks again for the content.
The problem is that it goes beyond just learning chromatic mode in Push, there is also music theory and ear training and all the related areas that take _years_ to master.
On a more constructive note, do you have suggestions on whether to use the layout tuned in 3rds or 4ths? I have noticed that some drum machines have 3x4 grid that works with 3rds tuning better, but i think 4ths tuning is a little easier when moving to from guitar.
That's what being a musician is all about, learning to speak the language of Sound...
Hey Jamie, thanks for the upload. Do you have any particular method for learning the chord shapes (and speed/fluency) in chromatic? My push is coming this week, and I kind of want to just go straight to chromatic and learn those shapes instead of starting with in key. No experience with keys, but am a guitarist and know how chords are put together
Nice vid. I don't have any piano/guitar playing background, so I lean on In-Key mode heavily. This video helps me want to explore chromatic mode more. Future vids I would like would be discussion on shapes in chromatic mode, how they change or persist through the scale, and that type of thing.
Also, I meant to ask, is your keyboard display thing, on the push, or added in post?
Right on, I will definitely make more chord shape videos!
Keyboard is overlaid in post. Screen capture of chordie app
I never noticed how much better and more sophisticated/elegant music sounds being played in chromatic mode vs moving the same triangle pattern around in inkey mode. Like the difference is night and day. You've officially convinced me. I'd gone through your previous video from year ago on 43 chord shapes on the push, but is there another resource you can point to that shows all the shapes to play on Push in chromatic mode?
Ableton has some great starter videos on playing push in chromatic mode. I'm working on an in depth course that will be ready in a couple months :)
Nice tutorial, thanks. Can I ask what was the noise in the background, I mean is it in the keys instrument or is it in some pack in Ableton? Where can I get it? :) Thanks
thats an amazing video. One Question please. Are you leave the scale in chromatic mode at C major all the time?
Hi Jamie!! I'm tired of the classic piano notes. I've been playing piano for many years and I just hate to memorize chords. I play the guitar and everything is just SYMETRICAL. I love that.
However, I love piano sound and the 2-hands thing, but I hate the piano notes order, I want to go chromatic.
I've heard about isomorphic pianos, and ended here. I really want to quit the old piano and start playing around something chromatic like this. I'll definitely look into this, thanks!!
This looks harder than learning to play the piano (which I just started doing)! :P
could you help me please with mine its turned blue since new Mac update id appreciate it :)
What's the trick for navigating a chord progression. Like if someone says play an A-E-F#mi7-D, do you recognize where the root of these notes are by the pattern of chromatic mode like you do on a piano. I mean on piano you always know where all the F# notes sit. Is it the same in chromatic mode. Then you do the mi7 shape? I'm new to push and trying to figure out if it's worth learning.
I have to stop playing keys 🎹 and work more on the Push2. I too have a Force which now is forcing me (no pun) to learn the fingering. Between watching your video and someone playing Teen Town I made a decision I must learn the Push as an instrument. That patch by the way sounded like EP-1 with chorus. Nice selection.
Great ear! It's the Gospel EP1 with RC20
@@jxmieblake I still have a Roland P-330. I’ll be getting Keyscape soon. I got KeySuite from UVI. That RC-20 gives it character I must try that.
How did you move the piano keys to the display, or is it post-processing editing?
That's definitely post-editing mate!
do i need to learn piano first? i know some basic music theory, but can't play any instrument. i've been trying to produce music.
Waiting on that course
Releasing in June!
@@jxmieblake Any speicific date locked in? Or from June 1st?😬😬😬😬
End of June! Will post teasers beforehand
@@jxmieblake AHEM!!! End of June today. Hahaha
Free course is dropping next week! Thank you for your patience 🙏🏻
this video is underrated.
Thank you bro 🙏🏻 nice to hear from you
@@jxmieblake I was wondering if you would remember me 😂.
Great seeing you on here btw , saw your P3 video. I’m on the P3 beta team as well :) . Love your content POST MORE!
Thanks Ken! I appreciate the encouragement. And of course I remember you - crazy it’s almost been 10 years since we met in Seattle.
Could you please tell me what app or service you use for showing chords?
Chordie app!
@@jxmieblake thanks
So how canyou play in chromatic mode if you dont know the theory? I though in key mode was to ensure you are playing into the key
Do you use a foot pedal with your push?
Yes I use a sustain pedal
Notifications officially switched on. Though i do this anyway.😎
I appreciate your support!
Love your vids man. Always. But I wonder, as a pianist and finger-drummer, once the theory and chord formulas are known, wouldn’t it be easier just doing all of this on a keyboard? The visuals of chord shapes seem more logical on a piano and less so on grid controllers. That said, your grid skills are great, man. 😊
Thank you! If you know how to play piano then this isn't super useful. This is more for guitar/bass players and people who don't play any instruments but have a push/launchpad/akai force/linnstrument
So that leaves another question, why not Tonnetz mode? Or does Push not have a Tonnetz mode. I come from Akai Force.
Same thing applies. From what I understand, tonnetz mode moves in fifths from left to right and thirds from bottom to top. This omits chromatic notes, so the concepts I discuss here still apply.
I want to learn chromatic mode so bad but I just don’t understand it! I understand the in key mode to the fullest. Do you have a class I can take to learn chromatic ? Lol seriously
I’m working on a class right now 😊
Buddy I feel for you. I saw a trained pianist saying they didn't get it either. The best advice i can give you is learn about bass guitar.
The push in chromatic mode in 4ths is the same as looking at a bass fretboard. This is slso tuned in 4ths. Any scale or chord shapes for bass will work on Push in chromatic mode tuned by 4ths.
You'll have the added advantage of of understanding a bass as well.
@@jxmieblake thanks
Dude, if we're to learn to play in chromatic mode, we might as well just learn to play the piano... Key mode is to get most of the way there fast (and to have a safety net). You cannot have a proper chromatic grid with 8 notes per row anyway, as having to map 12 notes per octave in that, means the chord/scale shapes and patterns are not consistent (like they'd be on a bass/guitar etc).
*shrug* I prefer chromatic mode as the default, but I think you should use whatever works in context. I've seen performers use specific keys that work to make playing parts easier in certain songs. Make sure you're comfortable in chromatic but the other settings aren't trash at all.
omg no one plays push enough to call out this crutch, and most people who don't play chromatic don't know music theory enough to realize why it holds them back
I mean jazz is all about those tasty chromatic notes so this was never an option for me.
or just get a launchpad and play with one finger
