Another superb vintage treat Austin, the pan of Nunney at 05:05 is a classic. It's best steaming coal that these GWR Classics need to work the S&C, and of course a Crew that can handle them as was seen with 5043's run last year....5* Bob
Thanks Ryan, the S & C can test the very best. I'd like to see 5029 or 5043 have another go. I think a good crew is essential, look at 5043's visit to Shap this year.
Thanks Philip, I don't think she has been back since she disgraced herself!! It would be interesting to see her or 5043 try again with a good crew and sensible load.
Iv just had a closer look at 5029 when she was on the S&C back '94, it really does show that Nunney struggled on the S&C really badly and also looking at 6024s run aswell they both had steaming issues on that line. And 5043 really has beaten both engines!
An excellent video Austin. You certainly have some cracking "archive" footage here. I was probably lineside on the S&C somewhere (pre video days) Now where are my slides? perhaps see you tomorrow? Mike
I think she did better on the northbound run, a slog yes, but a heavier load than 5043. Those runs of 5029 and 6024 were blighted as well by poor coal and crews unfamiliar with GW engines. Those lessons have been learnt and 5043's recent exploits have seen a fireman who knows the loco well, on the footplate. I'd love to see the King up here again with a sensible load
Very unusaul for a Castle to be up north. Suppose crews had to be prepared to handle a loud fierce running engine. The S&C never seems to get on well with western engines.
Excellent selection of locations, including the panned shot with the brief double whistle which you don't see that often. 5* Thanks for sharing. Mike
Another really good archive video that has that little bit extra to make it really enjoyable
Many thanks Mike, it certainly doesn't seem like 15 years ago since this run. Best wishes to you and yours for the New Year...Austin
That loco is in superb condition Austin, and would be a star performer for sure...Bob

Thanks Bob, as you say, properly handled and given decent coal and sensible load the route isn't a problem. Be nice to see 5043 on the S&C sometime
A brilliant video of the Castle. I guess she still is a stranger up north!
Thanks Mike, the archive is rapidly running out I fear. I'm hoping to be out tomorrow, probably Greenholme for the outward run if weather permits.
Thanks Steve, they were good days when you could easily get three shots northbound.
Thanks Si, maybe this year might see some more as it's GWR175
Magnificent archive film, as usual !!!

Cracking stuff Austin!
Pitty we can't have more GWR stuff over the S&C =]
Si
Thanks very much, great marketing line, 'the video with that little bit extra' !!
