I am smurfing with new account like 2-4 times a year and I have to tell you... times have changed drastically. When I started in season 5, bronze and silver players didnt even know what a ward is. Now you can see silver players actually doing macro rotations, 131, objective callings and other things and generally speaking the level of knowledge has improved in all divisions over the years. I know low elo players are still really bad in the game but Its not so tragic anymore and you can test it on your own. Its interesting to see it.

Maybe you're getting rusty, I boosted my friend from hardstuck bronze last season (9lp per win in the beginning) to gold 4 in less than 50 games, winning 45 of them and playing offrole champs I don't usually play. And I'm just diamond. The difference between gold 4 and plat is massive. Before I hit diamond this season, having a gold 3-4 player in lobby full of plat2+ players (it happens, shit matchmaking) is trully sad to watch. The guy is completely lost and you can tell it's not fun for him

    • @anthonyrodriguez9232

It's just the trickle down effect in action, the better players get at the high elos, low elos will see it and emulate it which in turn makes the low elos better. Knowledge in everything from video games to sciences is and will always be trickled down.

Kinda hate you for smurfing since smurfs are one of the reasons this game is getting ruined (I'm getting a carrying smurf every 3 ganes out of 5 basically). But I completely agree. Back when I started I was bronze and didn't know anything (like everyone else). Now (even if I gathered some skill and knowledge) I face stronger opponents than what I see in gold/plats games, even in the same elo (bronze). I think macro things like freezing and roaming should be from low gold onward tbh, but a lot of people here in low elo manage to pull them out

8 tips for climbing from someone who has done it since season 1:
But first: Getting a lot of comments asking, "what rank are you", and ones specifically arguing with the points I've made. I mentioned it in the comments, but I'm master this season on my main (it's linked in the comments below if you care to look), I've taken a step back from League recently to focus on IRL things, so I won't be climbing much going forward, will probably decay a lot. I've been as high as Grandmaster before. As for your disagreements, I don't care what a hard stuck silver thinks, and no, you aren't high elo if you are gold/plat, and you aren't good at climbing. These tips are aimed for Iron - Silver players who make up the vast majority of ranked players, things that I've seen as common issues in their play. If you think you are above these tips in some way, then fine. But that doesn't mean they aren't correct.
For everyone else who just wants to read some tips about climbing, these are for you:
    1. Make sure you can run the game at 60fps AT LEAST. If you can't, consider an upgrade to your PC. It doesn't take much to run league at 60.
    2. Use hard wired ethernet connection, wifi is significantly worse. (this is probably the biggest offender for a lot of players).
    3. The game is ALL about macro, this means decisions you make around objectives/lanes. study lane freezing/pushing, rotating, roaming, jungle paths, ward placements, etc. If you are lost on this topic watch high elo streamers play and see what they do. 9 times out of 10 they are doing the right thing in this regard. Look at how the game reacts to that play vs how your games play out. How did the minion waves look. Watch where they stand in lane during times they have great warding in the side bushes compared to when they don't. This is far more important than being able to kill your opponents in lane, riot killed that part of the game YEARS ago. It's a passive macro game to climb now. This follows into the next tip, which is even more important.
    4. LOOK AT YOUR MINIMAP. constantly. I mean ALL OF THE TIME. Every few seconds glance down at it, check your wards and see if you see anybody, then check the other lanes where your teammates are and see if you can account for all of the enemies. If you can't see the jungler and you haven't seen him for a while, play safe. Even if you have a potential kill on your hands. This goes for the other enemy laners as well. This game is so snowball-y that all it takes is for you to get caught slipping ONCE during an enemy roam/gank and you lose your tower, and then the game.
    5. Itemization. This is the BIGGEST one. Don't just follow cookie cutter builds online. Those builds are pointless to look at because 9 times out of 10 they are general purpose builds that don't account for what you could be facing. For example, as a marksman, don't build kraken into an enemy team full of assassins, even with the nerf shieldbow will save your life. But if you don't see assassins and they have more tanks. For the love of all that is holy build a kraken. If you see the enemy team is bopping with a ton of auto-attack damage, build that damn steelplated boots. Be willing to pivot your build to counter your opponents champs. Oh, and if you are the one with the gold/kills. Please build an IE/Rabadons. These "damage booster" items are NECESSARY to carry. They are worth at least 1 and a half items at least. I would get these items 3rd if you can. DO NOT BUILD BLOODTHIRSTER 1ST OR SECOND ON ANY CHAMP FOR ANY REASON. That item is great later on for sustain, but it has no attack speed, and only OK ad. It gives you very little damage for it's cost. You hit like a wet noodle with it and you might as well not even be attacking. If you need lifesteal that badly pick up a bork. It's slightly less but it gives attack speed AND a damage proc. It might be not have crit but it has enough innate damage to make up the difference. Still, if you listened to my early advice you would already have a shieldbow for survivability in these games and you could focus on getting damage items at this point.
    6. Your teammates are going to be bad. That's normal. You can't stop them from making bad plays, but you might be able to save those bad plays from being worse. If your team is going to group for an objective that they obviously can't win think of what your next decision should be. Do you have access to a nearby objective you can take by yourself to offset what's about to happen? 4 deaths (1200 gold) and a lost objective, maybe a dragon/baron are big losses but if you can take a tower or 2 in a lane and open up the game that forces the enemy to send players to stabilize that lane, effectively stripping some of that loss away for your team. If you don't think you can have that kind of impact, aka the towers are too high health you aren't a great tower/killing champ then go help your team, be the reason they win that stupid fight.
    7. Play the meta. It's meta for a reason. Look at the best meta champs, find the ones that are simplest/ you are most comfortable on and stick to them. Don't play the flashy high skill champs, even if you think are you good at the game you won't always be playing at 100% and then those games YOU will be your team's liability. No need to bring on extra losses you can avoid by simply picking easy champs.
    8. And finally, play a LOT of games. Climbing involves a lot of RNG due to bad players being placed on your team, and some games you won't be playing well. That's all fine and normal. You have to play a lot of games to climb. Even Tyler1 took multiple months of playing all day every day to climb to challenger and he's actually already good at the game. If you only play a game or 2 a day, you won't climb. If you don't think you can dedicate the amount of time I'm talking about here to the game, climbing in ranked probably isn't for you, and that's ok. I have way more fun playing ARAMs than I EVER have playing ranked, and a ton of people are only aram these days. Remember, if climbing isn't fun for you it probably isn't FOR you. And that's ok. It's definitely not a healthy lifestyle. Playing the game for fun is definitely more rewarding anyway.
Edit: The meta is the meta for the reason, ignore it if you wish but it won't end well for you. The amount of people who successfully one trick non-meta champs are few and far between, and if you are at the level where you need these tips, respectfully, you aren't one of those few players. At least not yet.
Edit 2: Seeing a lot of hot takes in these comments, if you are seriously interested in climbing, I wouldn't read them. They are incredibly short sited.

I like all your points, but not the Meta pick one, thats the classic temp elo players. I think its more important to just have your 2-3 Champs maybe something for any Enemy Set-up, you wont be able to carry a game as an Assassin if the enemys have 3 tanks. And just spamm your 2-3 Champs you will learn all the matchups and the way you have to play them.

No matter how many times I try to make a cross map play [taking towers and dragons (if I am bot side)] or try for a roam or flank it’s simply not enough because of “map blindness” for the most part and not knowing what to do or knowing but not doing for whatever reason (griefing).

This is pretty accurate. However, two things worth noting:
Mental; Not everyone has a strong mental. Some Master players
Might be Grandmaster or even Challenger level, but they have terrible mental
are easily tilted, and crack under pressure. This is a VERY big deal.
    -
Champion one tricks; One tricks are a problem. I've had one guy who was Platinum (In normal draft pick game)
Absolutely stomped my team and gave me hell. Next match his champ got banned.
Guess what? I felt like i was fighting a new player... He had no idea what he's doing
The combos were terrible, he couldnt gank for shit, and just like that we won one of the easiest games ever.
    -
Which is why many people will always tell you, reduce your champion pool as much as you can
but dont stick to just one champion. you should have AT LEAST 2 champions you are confident with
and have two roles you can play well. And finally, YOUR MENTAL... Don't tilt easily, keep calm
dont perma ff over anything and everything, dont flame your teammates OR yourself.
Besides that, enjoy the game friends, and remember, it really is just a game, dont let a defeat
    ruin your day! :)

Well, if you look at rank and skill progression you will notice that they are huge gaps between each ranks from iron up to low diamond, but those are gaps that can be easily improved on by fixing a major gameplay issue each player has. In D2 to Challenger its a little bit different. Since the mastery of the game is already on a high level everything that is left are just minor improvements that eventually can give big results (for example a jump in rank from D2 to Masters), but this obvsly doesnt mean that those are easy things to do, especially since its really hard to spot those gameplay failures on your own in the first place.

Because their knowledge, mechanics, macro and micro play are nearly impeccable. The very high summit of skill in this game takes HOURS to analyze their games to full extension, as they play almost like bots, making no mistakes whatsoever and almost every time they engage it's a toss up who will win. Seeing that is pure beauty.

Lots of people saying about macro being the major difference between lower and higher elo players... Well, macro in league is quite easy, especially in random soloq games, it really is mechanics that makes most difference between like challenger and diamond player. If you look at the replays of games you lose, you can tell SOME mechanical mistake you make in pretty much every fight, a mistake which probably decided if you end up winning or losing the game. Sure, you can't see macro that easy, it's not so obvious, but macro only requires simple solutions of you, it's mostly mechanics that determines if you lose your game or not. And by mechanics I obviously mean more things than just landing your skillshots, it's also positioning, kiting, remembering enemy cooldowns, losing minion aggro, jungle clearing, camera control and many more. This is why korea is so much better at the game, they tend to open games early on if only someone dies so they must have great mechanics in order for their team not to lose morale. Many streamers who played in korea (e.g, thebaus, tyler) also said that their macro is actually average but their mechanics are great, even in lower ranks like plat or diamond. One thing that makes huge difference tho is wave management, but I wouldn't be so certain to call it macro since it doesn't really change the way you move around the map

For example the difference between plat and dia is 100x smaller than between dia and masters. Even tho plat players are in like 15% of player distribution that doesnt change the fact that their understanding of the game is bad. For example d4 and d1 are technically the in the same rank but the difference in skill is so large that some high elo players even consider d4 low elo while d1 is respetable. For example g4 and g1 are literally the same thing cuz the elo is so low that a few hundred points up ir down doesnt change much

plat is like a wizard organization, their techniques are fucking insane. I play top and got to diamond in season 10 and promoted to masters for about a few weeks before inting my way back. During the time i have seen so many plats in my games (might be because of my fucked up elo) who dance using champs like lee sin and shit as if it was something they have been doing for 30 years

It's not just that gold players (by and large) haven't yet figured out that they have to play as a team to win, they actively resist the idea and are out to prove that no they don't. The whole concept still offends them.

A very good supp is usually more stronger of it's rank (a bronze can be strong as a gold rank) , you get walled hard in bronze/silver if you are a main supp bc you need your team to win, you can't do much alone in many games, even if you try your best or you pick a champ that can do damage

As a Diamond 2 player i think you gave to much credit to the lower elos mechanical skills, i 100% agreed that until diamond 3 everybody is trash, this is my 3 season and im ayming to get to masters and i problably will because at this point i think that your macro is what wins u games if u improve that u will climb

After becoming the top player in challenger rank, you will unlock the next highest rank which is herald.

it would be only fair if you think about the player counts in the lower ranks (like 60%+ iron-gold)

I'm usually around bronze because I end up quitting lol for months/years every now and then. What annoys me most is that most matches are decided by 1-2 players on a team going afk, running it down on purpose, picking champs they can't play at all and so on.
The elo being what it is, it's also very unrewarding to play supports which heavily rely on their adc to get things done compared to ones that can get kills on their own (and farm if the adc does stupid recalls, dies etc.).

So true, I'm stuck in platinum 1 for like 5, 6 seasons, that sucks, but, the thing is that I feel there is a huge wall between platinum 1 and diamond 4, like if I wanna climb I must play like a diamond 2, think that I'm not. I'm saying this because in platinum 1 I was matched with diamond 4 and 3, and felt like regular platinum to me (until disaster strikes and the matches just get really hard and quite unfair)
And you are right the difference between a diamond 2 and 3 is so huge
