You and me both. My buddy told me “stay safe, the fish will be bigger after all of this” 😂 if you do find my area out, keep it safe. Let’s keep this reef sustainable for all of us. And a hint to you, check out where the bugs are staying in the off season and you’ll find them when it’s on 🤙🤙
@@WildCaughtOutdoors alright thanks, new to Spearfishing just experience in fishing and little bit of snorkeling and interested in the sport 👍 and Spearfishing
There are two places in Malibu that you can cook on the beach, Thornhill broome but you have to pay for camping and sycamore cove where you can pay for a day spot. Hope that helps
Loved the vid! Looks like you went in the coldest months, December maybe? Do you prefer a particular style of free diving wetsuit? And for the winter months do you like 3,5,7mm thickness?
I appreciate that! Yup, this was if I remember correctly end of November before the rainfall started coming in. I love my Yazbeck wetsuits. A 5MM suit will keep you relatively warm off the coast (what I’m wearing in this video) but a 7mm is key if you want to dive the islands in the winter. Hope that helps!
Devin Gaumont much appreciated!! In this video I am. However, I am good friends with lifeguards at this beach and one good lifeguard friend was paddle-boarding around me during this dive (he got some scallops, was very stoked). I hope you can use this knowledge from this video for your next dive 🤙
Hey man, I just started out lobster diving and I’m in the same general area as you. Just curious if I could pick your brain a little bit on tips and beginner do and donts.
Oh yeah man, I’ve scoped all your videos, they’re sick. My biggest problem so far has been trying to find the right time to go for good water clarity. Do Certain tides make for better hunting or is it all spot dependent?
It’s a bit tricky, and Mother Nature always has the final say. Best way to start is by understanding what’s going on in your local area, wind tide waves weather. What you want is a long duration of the least amount of water movement possible going on. That way sediment has a better chance to settle down. Usually waves and wind cause the most havoc, but big tide changes can as well. Offshore winds create epic conditions though. Hope that helps
Ok cool, I’m eyeing next week as the swell tapers off. I appreciate all the info and looking forward to seeing some more of your content. Keep killing it!
So when I first started to get into spearfishing and freediving, I used cheap gear. When you are first starting out this is all you need anyway. Long plastic swim fins (don't get the short ones), a good wetsuit, and maybe a mask set (although maybe splurge a little more on the mask so it doesn't leak). This will help you build up the skills/confidence in the shallows, and when you start to push out to deeper water, then it would be wise to invest more money into dive suits, better mask snorkels, and a good set of fins. Thinking of making a beginners video to freediving soon. Let me know if you have anymore questions, hope this helps you get started!
@@WildCaughtOutdoors Great Thanks ! Im looking to invest into a cressi beginner set. I will definitely look for a set with long fins. Yes i think a video for beginners is a great idea 👍
Leo Carrillo is pretty overfished, it’s close to PCH so easy access for a lot of people. Surprised you didn’t have much luck at El Matador. I think since lobster season just opened there’s been a TON of divers heading out and the fish scattered to deeper water. Once we start getting deeper into winter, they’ll move back on the reefs. Happy spearing hope that helps 🤙
There was some surge and the water was still a little silty. My friend lives just north of el matador saw some sheephead and a white see bass. We were going to go to pt dume but then figured out it is a smr mpa
I saw a WSB diving too when I went for bugs last week (stay tuned for a new episode soon). Surprised they are still around this into fall. I would just keep checking out new spots. The spots that seem like they wouldn’t be good sometimes are the best since no one goes. Dume is super fun just to freedive around with a camera
Love this vid! Eager to get out there, especially in light of the chaos from this year haha. I know that water gets damn cold during lobster season months... you typically roll with 5mm?
Me too!! Waiting for this hurricane swell to pass through and I’ll be out there. My suit is a 5mm Yazbeck dive suit (with a ton of holes). You can get away with a 4/3mm surf suit too but you’ll be a little colder. When I first started diving I used a really worn 4/3 AND a really worn 3/2 over each other 😂
Mizelipha not yet, planning on going when the swell dies down. Maybe end of this week? Want to get some waves in while I have the chance and then snag some bugs
Fish N Dive SoCal the diving is filmed on the Go Pro 6, I would switch between a hand mount and a stationary mount built with a weight that would sit on the bottom. The cooking is filmed with a Canon EOS T5 and the same GoPro 🤙 if you’re ever in my neck of the woods, lets fish
I was too when I started, but learned the sharks here are literally like puppies (look up horn sharks, they have a cute face) and they don’t bother anybody. Start shallow and work your way deeper 🤙
I would check out Freedive N Spear, they offer amazing classes to help you on your journey. Start small, dive the shallows learn ocean and your bodies limitations and continue from there 🤙
that was an awesome vid man, I wish I still lived in Cali. did a lot of diving there from 2017-2018. just made my annual trip out to Cali for lobsters. if you'd like, please check out the vids I made from that trip! hope to see you out there sometime!
Love your vids man, the crab ones are cool too. I set out last winter to do crab netting in Malibu (had this rad GoPro set up on them too) but couldn’t attract them over. Maybe you got the tips to make it happen. Let me know whenever you’re around and maybe we can do a little collab on a trip
@@WildCaughtOutdoors Thanks for the compliment! Well I would say the best tip I could give you is - don't go crabbing in socal! but if you do, 2nd best tip would be to target the yellow rock crab (prob the most common) found on the sand by structure. I think Santa Monica should have them, and possibly Torrance Beach. I think in Malibu, you can get sheep crab, but you'd have better luck with your eyes than a crab net. I'll def keep you in mind during my next visit!

Awesome free drive! Didn’t know there was such a huge ecosystem just beyond the shore. Sheewhooooo 🤙
Love shorediving, so much life off our coasts! Thanks for watching 🤙
I dive that same spot! Good lobster diving and usually find scallops!
Yeah it’s my favorite spot, make sure to take care of the reef!
In Australia we also eat the orange roe that is attached to the white muscle, ....enjoyed your vid, thankyou
Thanks for watching! I’ve heard of people eating the roe but I’ve never tried it. Do you consume it raw or is there a way to prepare it?
dang the wind surfer was cool where did he go
Probably left because wind died, Santa Ana winds start off strong but create eddies that will cycle between really low wind patterns
Great editing, beautiful footage! The scallops were really cool, don't see them very often. The plating at the end was perfection.
Thank you, scallops are one of my favorite reef treats!
Shoots, I miss diving. Hopefully I'll find the time in the future and check that area out. I do want some fresh uni and lobster

Always wanted to try freediving open ocean how do you get back to the shore just swim?
Well this we would call shorediving, just swim out from shore as far as we want to catch fish. When we are done we swim back in
