I know none of this was meant to come this way, but this video is so amazing when it comes to its aesthetic. the grainy lines across the screen, the brown and dim tone of the room, the color and ruggedness of the device. it looks as if the video is being recorded by someone that's surviving the end of society and their only way of coping is by using this device to make music. I'm also really fucking high right now.
I so fucking understand I've come to the conclusion that these types of conversations are at a level that you can debate, but its above average thinking its not using the potencional of your vocabulary; for example "hahaha uhh.. thanks? i think" was like his brain doesnt even wanna function this is my first comment on youtube, and im 21
Yea.. i didn't mean it to come off like that. When I made this video it was just a few months after i got my SP so i just wanted to make a beat and record it to youtube. There's no intentional deep meaning behind this particular beat, in fact it was a bit rushed, but if someone can find meaning in it then I'm glad.
Lol fr tho 🙌💯💪❤ same ... I bought mine a long azz time ago bcuz of this vid n im finally coming back to give it props 🤣 I had this vids audio downloaded to my phone so I would listen on repeat all tha time ... #thagoodoldays
I watch this video every now and again and just love the vibe. I used to watch this before I had an SP-404. Now I've had one for years (actually had a couple) and I'm still impressed by the sound of this. Each element sounds fab - even though there are only a few elements in there they all gel perfectly. That kick is thick and warm, getting that compressor ducking nicely. The snare has a nice crack without overwhelming the mix and the main sample has a lovely warble and depth without being ridiculous. There's a comment on here saying how this track brings to mind being in a bunker following a nuclear apocalypse - I get that loud and clear. :)
funny to see all these people say they need a sp now they've seen this vid... they'll try it 6 times and sell it again... It is about persistance, talent and actually NOT about the equipment used at all... You could make this in any DAW or whatever workstation as well... That being said... I really love this beat tho'! Nice job!
i agree to some extent.. but at the end of the day as long as people are having fun making music then it's all good.. to be honest i'm guilty of that too, i haven't touched my 404 in a while now, i personally prefer the workflow on the MPC being able to track out multiple tracks into ableton and fuck around with it in there.. but yeah i totally agree, you could make music like this without a 404.. glad u liked the beat man!
+Jorge Rojas i'm gonna try to do another one soon ;) i've just been working on some beats in ableton recently.. but i'll try and post another video like this soon. i appreciate you checkin out my stuff!
this is making me buy an sp 404 and pursue beatmaking , I want to make videos like this by manually hitting the pads, im wondering what those 2 cords are plugged into? your phone or your laptop or something? was the camera your phone camera?
It was a while ago I made this but I’m pretty sure I used my MacBook webcam to film it and added some fx in iMovie. The 2 cables are the line output going into my Audio Interface where I recorded the audio in Ableton, I also had some fx going in ableton. Hope this helps dude!
aruma thankyou, Is there alternative ways to do little live sets like people that do them outside what to they do? They still have the 2 cords it seems like everyone still has those 2 cords plugged in
Those 2 cables are the Line Out from the SP404, so basically the sounds will come out of the SP404 through those cables and into whatever you plug them into. Usually in a live show they'd have the cables going into the speakers through either a mixer or some kinda pre-amp. If you're new to producing or even just wanna get started on the SP 404 then might be worth checking out the SP forums: sp-forums.com/ When I first started producing I learned most the techniques from posting tracks on various forums, getting feedback and just reading tutorials people posted, although nowadays youtube is a pretty good source of tutorials too.
aruma ty but what about the people that are outside? Can you plug them into your phone then use the camera on your phone to record vids like you just did outside?
+lordarekkusu thanks man, just keep practising and find a workflow that suits you.. i still rarely use just the 404 for beatmaking, it's more just for jamming and the fx
Thinking about getting one of these, newbie here, so with these sounds, are they all generated on this machine or samples from somewhere else? You can do both but just wondering what type of sounds you can generate on it, quite a wide range?
+thoth ॐ ayy, thanks man i appreciate it! I've been producing since i was 16, so around 10 years now. I'm really kind of a noob with the 404 though, i've had it maybe 6 months, but i prefer to use it more for the FX as opposed to making beats on it.. i can make stuff like this but i feel it's not as good as stuff i can make in a DAW, that's just me though.. i've seen plenty of sick beats come straight out of the 404, Mujo on youtube is a prime example
That snare sounds incredible...where did you get it at? I've been trying to create a nice sounding lofi snare but they are all sounding cheesy to me, like something you'd hear on a cheap keyboard. And not in a good lofi way lol
Amanda Hensley I made it from chopping out snares from drum breaks, tuning and layering in Ableton then the whole beat is run through the vinyl sim on the 404
thats radd man! could someone help me? how does a 404 exactly work? is it connected to a computer so that you can select your samples and loops or are they stored on the 404 itself? how does it work?
thanks! the 404 is a sampler so the samples are recorded onto it and stored there, you can then chop them up onto each pad, add fx to 1 or more pads and resample (record fx or multiple sounds to 1 pad) hope that helps
ah so like, connect it to your record player and stuff get it, thanks! i just started fooling around on my launchkey MIDI and ableton but this is way more interesting! and you should check DigitalLuc he's also madd creative on his 404.
+fujiquinn On the sp404, the vinyl sim compression makes it sound like that. You can use sidechain compression in a DAW but it doesn't sound exactly the same.. basically set the kick louder than the sample and use the vinyl sim comp on all the pads, the compressor will then try and bring the up volume of everything else so it's consistent with the loudest sound going into it.. it's not exactly the same concept as sidechain compression but it's the closest equivalent on the 404
+aruma ah thank you man been looking all over for this. i appreciate your response. dope stuff here man keep it up, i subscribed so i can see your future stuff. peace fam!
So you it's like the opposite of sidechain compression? Rather than using a compressor to lower the samples volume, you use it to bring everything up to match the kick?
nah, i think for this one i just recorded it to the SP as is and chopped it in there.. might've added some fx on the SP but i cant really remember, vinyl sim is pretty much turned to max on all pads though to give it that almost "sidechained" effect. if the sample your using has a lot of bass in it you might wanna clean it up with an eq first if you're gonna use the vinyl sim on the OG 404.. it can be kinda overpowering
Ok thanks man! another question, how you get hq samples on youtube? Because every time i put youtube samples on SP they sound too dirty and it's not possible to make a beats also if I try to clean during the mix
sometimes i'll search for the sample in google if i can't find a clean enough version on youtube.. there's plenty of blogs and resources out there if you know what to look for ;)
It's so minimal, yet this is one of the best sp404 live songs on youtube
I've just gone and bought an sp404 haha, thanks for the inspiration :)
I still come back to this
I know none of this was meant to come this way, but this video is so amazing when it comes to its aesthetic. the grainy lines across the screen, the brown and dim tone of the room, the color and ruggedness of the device. it looks as if the video is being recorded by someone that's surviving the end of society and their only way of coping is by using this device to make music.
I'm also really fucking high right now.
hahaha uhh.. thanks? i think
That would make for a good music video for this song or a movie with that exact theme.
I so fucking understand
I've come to the conclusion that these types of conversations are at a level that you can debate, but its above average thinking

There is meaning in everything :)
This video is so sick never let this delete
I bought my first sp404 thanks to this video
6 years ago
Lol fr tho 🙌💯💪❤ same ... I bought mine a long azz time ago bcuz of this vid n im finally coming back to give it props 🤣 I had this vids audio downloaded to my phone so I would listen on repeat all tha time ... #thagoodoldays
Yellow sp 404 looks awesome. Never seen that before
I watch this video every now and again and just love the vibe. I used to watch this before I had an SP-404. +Leo Abedian Don't sweat the learning part, just have fun with it.. the 404 is something i use more for fun than to make full beats tbh
Do u have this on soundcloud? Tbh, this is probably the best lofi beat I've heard! Great job!
Very nice.

Can you do tutorials on the OG sp 404? There are like none on youtube, tutuorials on sampling and how to get samples onto it would be great!
💗

I LOVE that Bass Kick! Where did you get it?
chopped up some breaks, layered some shit together
nice nice, gotta do a collab with you some day
Arriba la Old School
Is there a full version of this song available somewhere? Cause I really love this beat. I can't find it on your beat tapes.
上手。
can you resample a jam sesh like this
this is making me buy an sp 404 and pursue beatmaking , I want to make videos like this by manually hitting the pads, im wondering what those 2 cords are plugged into? your phone or your laptop or something? was the camera your phone camera?

dude keep answering folk like that, i'm eager to produce some beats too, i just don't know how and where to start, thank you s2
Peep the palace
got a sp 404sx 2 days ago, nice equipment. you got mad skills, still learning but i wish i can make beats like you, followed ur sc
+lordarekkusu thanks man, just keep practising and find a workflow that suits you.. i still rarely use just the 404 for beatmaking, it's more just for jamming and the fx
+aruma dope man thanks! I'm making a beat rn. What DAW do you use? Nice palace shirt btw ha!
damn so fine
good stuff! how'd you get that yellow skin?
Thinking about getting one of these, newbie here, so with these sounds, are they all generated on this machine or samples from somewhere else? You can do both but just wondering what type of sounds you can generate on it, quite a wide range?
yea it's purely a sampler, the only thing you could probably generate from it is a sub bass using the subsonic effect.
this is sick dude. how long have you been producing? and how long have you been using the sp 404? keep it up
+thoth ॐ ayy, thanks man i appreciate it! I've been producing since i was 16, so around 10 years now. +aruma It's actually quite good for lo-fi. Sloppy and dirty, the way it should be.
+CLK TWR daw = digital audio workstation, like ableton or logic
+CLK TWR daw = digital audio workstation, like ableton or logic
i don't like daw.
What is your drum kit?
Saca mas asi bro porfa , son uso libre??

+beatrise garcia vinyl sim compression on the sp 404 mainly
Ye I've only been using my so for a month or two haha i vastly prefer my workflow in ableton but I'm learning my way hopefully
damm i need roland sp....
where'd u get that cool colored sp 404? Also love the beat nd positive vibes

Could anybody tell me how to get that overexposed bass effect?
Yknow how the melody kinda gets muted out when the kick drum hits
It's a sidechain
teach me senpai
not bad
do you use a daw to record your beat tapes
Yea, I mainly been using Ableton for beats recently. Would love to do another one of these SP videos or maybe an MPC video soon tho...
Palace crew
how do you make the kick override the sample? I know you can automate it but is there a specific term for this? Dope vid by the way

еееееее, бля да ты красавчик!!!
where'd you sample this from???
Richard Neff he just gonna take credit for another artist?
