"...I'm not as good at working on cars as they are..." But that's actually precisely why a lot of us love Hubnut, Ian! You make us all feel better about our own little mishaps - and you give us hope that we are not alone in painfully finding that real life DIY car is never quite as easy as the fabled Haynes manual made it sound and look.
At least Haynes manuals were better than using the manufacturers workshop manual which often never explained how and often said use tool part No.xxxx not saying what it was.
I shed a tear watching the last Grand Tour. As far as YoutTube is concerned, Not Economically Viable and Steve Berry’s Big in the 90s are amongst my favourite newer channels.
Times change. Hubnut, Whiteland, Kitch and Seaside amuse us car enthousiasts, as do Steph, Matt Furious, Tom Drives, Twin Cam, Ed’s and Big Car with their historic deepdives for instance. Each with their own niche and atmosphere. AutoAlex revives the old Top Gear vibe for today. All on RUclips, for free and sometimes with a donation, auction, membership or merch in support. The greatest respect and appreciation for all of them, there is way more good content now than in the old TV days.
One thing that I find interesting is that the multiple camera angles with a film crew, scripts, and high-production values actually make things less watchable. Vicegrip Garage is an example - the most enjoyable stuff is just him in a field occasionally moving the camera, but he has done a few shows for MotorTrend TV and the magic was not there. Watching you, 6D Diesels and Tasty Classics is much more fun.
@@hubnotes I felt that the detail Derek puts into VGG videos which can sometimes run to 2+ hours, just couldn't be cut into an hour long (with commercial breaks) Roadworthy episode. I enjoyed watching but it wasn't the same.
RIP Roadkill, at least Frieburger, Finnegan and Dulcich are all on RUclips now, and even better than ever with no overbearing control. Some of the best entertainment ever by the three of them
I quite enjoyed how the earlier days of HubNut with the collection caper of a car you liked and was cheap and then tried to fix it and moved it on to for another caper lol
Went behind a paywall. People stopped paying. A lot of RUclipsrs etc are “hey it’s only 5bucks or a coffee a month” the problem is that it all adds up if you are doing that for each creator you like.
I'm not convinced the finances for Roadkill are why it was killed. The current parent company has something like 41 billion dollars of debt so cuts were always on the cards.
I've never seen Roadkill or any of the others you mentioned. But I have been watching a YT channel which seems a little similar on a smaller scale called JunkyardDigs for years. Finding and fixing up old motors and driving them home. Sometimes throwing in a challenge.
Terribly sad that grand tour came to an end. Time takes no prisoners. We all get old.. How can you not like the Clarkson, May and Hammond top gear.. i agree with you about online changes. RUclips dropping its cut to contributors made it more difficult for you guys.
Followed these guys since the off , watched all those episodes , I even paid for a MT subscription through Prime just to watch them there , paying a month and catching up a few at a time then cancelling . anyway lets see how things go here , Dulcich makes me laugh with his driving fast face on the intro to Roadkill Garage , a funny man .
I started watching shows like Horsepower TV with Joe Elmore and Stacey David's Gearz before roadkill was a thing, another show that started good but went silly was Monster Garage with Jesse James of West coast Choppers, Spike TV had some great shows back in the day for gearheads ( petrolheads ) with many muscle car and drag racing orientated shows, probably one of my favourites was Jessi Combs from Xtreme 4x4 what a talented beautiful women taken so early in life RIP
I started to watch Roadkill after a co worker of mine suggested it to me. It was at around the time of the first Stubby Bob episode and I watched a lot of episodes when it was on RUclips. Love the show. Even bought a FSM tshirt from Finnegan years ago and such. When they put all the episodes all behind the paywall through Motortrend, then I stopped watching new episodes unfortunately. However, a tv station here in Canada called Discovery Velocity still air some of the classic episodes. Shame that its coming to an end, but all good things must come to an end.
We've also lost Car Throttle and Donut recently, both due to terrible management taking over both. Thankfully They've splintered into other channels which are just as, if not more entertaining.
MT Went down hill when they removed alot of content for UK Viewers. I was happily subscribed to MotorTrend, purely for Roadkill. I havn't watched it in 5-6 years since.
Just watching April's Garage with Tyler Hoover on this subject, he had a show with Motor Trend for a couple of seasons so it's an interesting inside view. I can't say I heard of the show as I'm pretty much always just looking at YT these days for my content.
I just finished watching Freiburger's announcement and reminiscence on his channel. The end of an era, but perhaps the beginning of a new one. I suspect my subscription to Motor Trend is now on borrowed time.
I used to love Roadkill, but not enough to go through the paywall. In fact I'm sick of having a separate paid streaming service for each thing I want to watch.
The first few seasons of Roadkill were amazing and innovative, so was Roadkill garage, Hotrod Garage and Dirt Every day but for reasons I can't really pinpoint they all went a bit downhill around the same time. It wasn't because of the paywall but maybe something related to that.
Your thoughts reflected mine having just watched David Fs vid, a real shame for them, but I guess great such people on RUclips again. I was gutted when it went behind a paywall, then we couldn’t get it in uk for a bit etc so kinda lost track and interest.
I think RoadKill was one if the few channels I caught onto fairly on in it's life (I particularly loved the bodge-tastic 'bagged Jeep Rat-rod... thing), and even when they went behind a paywall, I was aiming to keep watching - however, if I remember correctly, you could only watch it on the Motortrend 'App', and I loathe watching long-format content on phones. They may have changed it later on, but with no option to stream it on to TV like with RUclips, it was a big turn off. Shame about Dirt Every Day too, Fred had a really wacky, excitable energy!
Suggestion for you Ian, on a smaller scale instead of V8s, how about using 2CV engines, thinking of the likes of Katies Lomax . Caterham/Lotus style, a Mini etc to start with.😊
I was enjoying Roadkill very much and then as you say it went behind a paywall, that was quite disappointing. I understand they need to make money, but the whole idea of RUclips is to reach the less fortunate. I where I live is in the US has similar economics to your area in Wales have to choose what is a priority. Cable television doesn't fall into that priority list. I don't know how much the algorithm for RUclips made it harder for content creators to monetize their videos. Sorry for waffling on as you would say. Glad you have stayed true to what you want to do and not try to be a full on production. People myself included can relate to you and the family. Keep plugging mate as the would say in AU
Since the Clarkson Trio ended there has been a void others have tried and failed to fill. Have you tried the Auto Alex Top Dead Centre All the gear empire, some of the content is sometimes a little churlish. However recent gems feature a Kei truck a T3 campervan Rover Streetwise and a Mk1 Scenic RX4? Renault Fluence so maybe have a look
"Hub-Kill?." "Road-Nut?." 13 years came and went. Nothing we can do about it. You yourself have done similar things if you think about it. The Mighty Dacha and the Mazda 626 were kinda in the same vein.
It ended 10 years ago when they pushed it onto that subscription only junk that was basically us only. Watched it from the first ep right until it left YT
I think what we're seeing is the slow death of car culture. Clarkson summed it up at the end of the last Grand Tour when he said it's impossible to get excited about EVs as they have no soul and are just transportation appliances.
The Algorithm giveth and the Algorithm taketh away. Cursed be the Algorithm! You're right, everyone needs something on a back burner just in case. Perhaps now is the time to start developing a banter-brimmed bromance with a top-notch mechanic, or maybe a venture with a couple of really good bodywork folks who happen to have a few potential projects laying around...
It's not something I watched owing to paywalling things off, but as with anything, it seems to be another case of "All good things...", when something has been going for many years, it gets to a point where you struggle to find something new that hasn't been done already, so, it's a case of either go down the obviously-scripted content which pushes people away, or just come to a natural end and move on to something new...
I watched it when it was on YT, but I'm not paying for it and I guess a lot of other people were the same, also there are a bunch of other people doing more or less the exact same thing for free on YT.
Maybe you could do what they used to do.....ie: throw a dart at the map of England and purchase a car from where the dart fall's.......... & I thought you were planning a trip over to Missouri to visit Robert ? (Ageing wheels/Under-Done)
Now you mention it, I do remember these guys, but I haven’t seen them on YT for ages. To be honest the RUclips algorithm is now complete junk, once it was fairly good at giving you a varied range of channels based on your general viewing habits, now if click on cat video once, 50% of feed is cats, the other 50 is either rubbish or channel you already dismissed!
I used to watch Roadkill up until the paywall came, it was a good show. Usually i am a bit sceptical towards US car channels because i they tend to be "too much", but i really enjoy Diesel Creek and Junkyard Digs. Both are down to earth and really knowledgeable. I really enjoy Autoalex Cars and the other channels that came to be around him.
I feel Junkyard Digs is often overlooked but Kevin seems a genuinely decent guy and I'm surprised at his level of knowledge when it comes to rebuilding components like carbs etc.
I don't care how big you think you are, no one is indispensable. Going behind a paywall has resulted in the humbling of quite a few toobers who thought they were really prime time. The truth is that there is always something to watch, and many actually prefer low budget amateur content. Many of these media companies have mountains of debts. So its back to U Tube for these guys. 😂😂
never watched it Ian - got to say I thought this vlog was going to be about another benefit of 20mph limits - animals get more time to get out of the way ha ha ha
David Frieburger is a liar. I enjoyed the show in the early days, but as MT started putting content behind a paywall, I remember David assuring the RUclips fans that Roadkill would NEVER go behind a paywall. A few months later it did. When he lied, he lost all my respect. Never watched another Motor trend video since. Have enjoyed watching Finnegan's Garage a bit. If you enjoyed Roadkill, you'll probably love Junkyard Digs on RUclips...check it out if you aren't familiar.
I did not like Clarkson the first time I saw him but he grew on me, I did not like Roadkill and still don't. Fellow American RUclipsrs and auto shows are like American movies, over the top and have little basis in reality. I'd rather watch a 500cc engine made into a 600cc engine by a long haired git from Wales than some worthless auto mod done only for entertainment.

Motortrend started going bad when they stopped streaming overseas. I used to never miss a minute of it, and then all of a sudden, it was gone.
Can’t believe the mighty car mods colab was 8 years ago!
Roadkill, Car Throttle, etc etc. The death knell for any innovative media is when a traditional media/production/private equity company get involved.
I shed a tear watching the last Grand Tour. As far as YoutTube is concerned, Not Economically Viable and Steve Berry’s Big in the 90s are amongst my favourite newer channels.
I came to your channel because you are relatable. Don’t change too much.
Never missed one episode and suddenly they went behind a paywall. I totally forgot the whole show still existed.
