    The fact that they DIDN'T cast a lookalike is what makes this performance so good. No rubber noses and jowls: just a hairstyle and acting.

      I feel Hopkins approached this role as an acting job, where he was to create a Nixonian character. Audiences seem to expect a Nixon imitator in the part instead. I very much favor a pro like Hopkins over the unfortunate person who just happens to look and/or sound like Richard Nixon. I think most people would agree if they think about it a little more.

    • @maximuscaligula
      @maximuscaligula 8 лет назад +34

      +Heliogabby I think he said he approached the role from a Shakespearean angle which Hopkins was a veteran of on the British stage and venues like the Old Vic in London. He saw Nixon as a tragic leader character like King Lear and Richard III.

    • @mr.coolmug3181
      @mr.coolmug3181 8 лет назад +13

      +Maximuscaligula You're right. And I agree with the general sentiment here that we shouldn't focus on look alikes and impersonators. We need someone with a deeper understanding of the character, like Hopkins. That's how Shakespeare characters are played, because ofcourse we can never know what the characters really look(ed) like.

    But this is one of the scenes that most portray Nixon: now he is alone, he has everyone against, even himself. General Haig and Kissinger will push him out permanently, for the good of the country (or rather, of the System, of the "wild animal"), but Nixon, one of the most unconventional and powerful historical figures of all time, continues to fight. He continues to fight.

      I agree Mr. President. Unlike President Trump you do not worship your own image. You were just massively paranoid and that is because of those damned Kennedy boys sir. I see your stock rising in the coming year's sir. History will recognize you as one of the greatest leader's of all tim.

      yes Mr. president.
      they are all cowards.
      they have no grasp of history I'd the greatness of the movement but are instead concerned with trivial mattress.
      what you need now is a bold move, like when you bombed Cambodia against all their advice.
      fire em all.
      in fact now go out and insult the famines of the pows.
      and the veterans especially the disabled ones.
      yes Mr. president.
      make America great again.

    Richard Nixon firing the man prosecuting him is like O.J. Simpson firing the people prosecuting him. I also thought it hypocritical of Nixon saying he would not comment on a case currently before the courts when he declared Charles Manson guilty when his case was currently before the courts.

But he graduated from Wharton Business School. Wow! How does graduating from Wharton Business School qualify him to run the United States?

      Nixon's mother was Irish Quaker. California was full of first generation Scots and Irish when Nixon was growing up, and it was them that any immigrant picked up English from, hence the rhotic /r/ sounds and the short vowels. Hopkin's accent bordering on Irish sometimes? You are definitely onto something there: Did Sir Anthony see something in Nixon that his canny Welsh ears alone could detect?
