HPI has really fallen short here on an opportunity to reclaim this segment, so many of the savages quirks are basically all still here.and nice etched TVP's that you can't see, yet they didn't include them on the nitro models where u can see them? WTH HPI? You guys really dropped the ball here on this 'blow n go' re-release. Its really quite sad to me as I'm a huge HPI racing fan and had a love affair with the savage platform for over a decade, huge disappointment. At least factory parts support in canada will re-emerge for all my old savages for a little while at least.
I got the Savage X 4.1 right after it came out, and I loved it. Smacked a tree head on at full speed downhill and the car just ate that tree up! No damage except the exhaust pipe came loose in the silicone coupling. Later on I got the Flux conversion kit for it, dropped in a Mamba Monster in it and gave it the beans. Two months ago I got the Savage X Flux V2 6S and I love it still. It's just all around a great truck and good design. Sure, it's harder in some aspects to work on with the TVP design, but it's worth the "hassle" to have that (IMO) superior chassis design. I've done some gnarly things to my cars and not a thing have happened to it. I've wrenched on the old Savage 4.1 so much that basically ALL screews are loose due to the plastic they screw into have worn out. Just think about that. Basically ALL screws are LOOSE (finger tight at best with no threads left) and I thrash the car and nothing comes loose, flies off or gets damaged/bent. Say what you will about HPI, the support or the prices, but they created a BEAST of a truck. I don't condone fanboying. But for the Savage, I will make an exception.
Threw this video on as some background noise as I'm wrenching on my K8S and nec minute, you're shouting me out. Had to do a double take... Wow, thank you so much Greg, really appreciate that and it's a pleasure to help out a fellow RC nut whenever I can. And glad that tip paid off, too. 😁👍 Really like the detail you go into with your vids and nice to see we mentioned a lot of the same things that are good and bad (could be improved) on the truck. Nice one and thank you again for the mention. 🙂
I’ve had a few savage flux trucks, I bought one right when the first came out (2009?). I absolutely love them and I still have one. The one I have now I made into a flux xl before they even made one prebuilt with the xl chassis. I’m happy to see them again! Thanks for the video
@@otablott7779 I'd say it's still pretty good compared to a Maxx or Arrma whatsoever... I drive with some folks that drive Maxxes, Kraton what have you... And they are all pretty surprised a Savage is so strong. (I still have an old Flux that I keep running instead of buying a "newer" truck..)
@@papermaker2726 It means that the Savage Flux is still competitive with the Traxxas Maxx and so on. If you have a Savage Flux, imo: keep it. If you're looking for a new car, Traxxas Maxx with a better servo would be a good choice. Or a second hand Savage Flux...

hey Greg, any idea as to when we can expect some more nitro content? And awesome video BTW!! You really can't go wrong with a savage, one of, if not the toughest bashers around. (I also love your enthusiasm and the in-depth tour of this truck, truly an RC channel that others should benchmark themselves against. Keep up the great work please!!)
I am thinking I will get one of these Savages eventually. My first nitro was the original Savage X 4.6. Original release. Then I had an original release Savage xs the small truck. I had a Savage XL for a short amount of time. This truck looks cool. Love the body. Battery box looks cool and Savage flux power system are crazy they crank out some serious power.
Awesome, I truly miss HPI, The original Savage nitro back 20 years ago was the first hobby grade RC I got, and man was it a blast. Fingers crossed they're back for good now. But the price point on it makes me hesitant to pull the trigger, nostalgia aside, I can get more for less. Now, if I had some extra coin laying around, I'd buy in a heartbeat, but given this economy, it's tough for someone to drop $500 for a rig, much less $800. I think HPI should consider the market they're coming back in. All in all, it looks like a Savage, built like a Savage, and looks to drive like a Savage. It's on my Christmas list for sure..
why are viewers saying this truck is expensive. it's literally the cheapest high quality 6s 1/8 truck, it's cheaper than the xmaxx and Arrmas and has high quality parts.
I don't own any HPI cars, but this truck looks amazing! The vertical chasis plate makes so much sense, I think for a basher it's either plastic chasis or vertical plate if you want metal.
Can't go wrong with the savage. It's what the big boys used to play with when I was a teenager in the early 2000s. And there are 20yrs of parts out there. All generations are interchangable to a sensible degree. Always liked that about hpi, they listen and take care of you. Savage for life. It has no problem keeping up with 1/5 scales to.
@@thatmarred_mustang that twin plate savage even the old ones will hold up to abuse better then any flat panned chassis you should give one a try. They resist bending big time. But in saying that I do love my Kraton exb 6S!
I'm a bit biased, I have fond memories of sending my s-25 (1stgen savage) off the center of the massive 25' 180deg BMX berms all day long, this would be 2002. Only had to go home when I ran out of fuel which was usually a gallon. The nitro engine actually let go while airborne one time (rod pun sheared off ). That was the only time my day was cut short prematurely at the old BMX track do to a breakage. HPI warranted the engine and I was up and running in no time, just saying had a really good experience. Of all the folks I bashed with over the years the savage was consistently the last truck standing the majority of the time. I like the pan cars for racing, the lowered cg is huge! Try an xray it will blow your mind. The savage is a monster truck I like it for that. All the other MTs were fun but sorta like a glass doll in comparison, looks nice until you drop it. Lol any rc is a good rc at the end of the day as long as your having fun.
Great video, thank you! I actually just purchased (not yet received) the nitro Savage with the grey body (no idea how it differs to the orange one, would love to know though if anyone cares to inform me). I really like the chassis design, reminds me of my old Vaterra Glamis Uno and that thing is still going strong to this day. Hoping you can cover the nitro version in the future, that would be superb.
It doesn’t need a wheelie bar, you need throttle control… just kidding! Another awesome video man. Love to see them bring the savage line back. Maybe it will be easier to get parts for my 2013 savage x now.
I was all excited to see you were reviewing the rerelease of the nitro savage...then, electric? Booooooo come on Greg! I better be seeing that savage XL 5.9 review here soon man!
Hoping HPI gets back on their feet and cranking out more vehicles. My Venture goes anywhere the TRX4 and VS410 go at half the cost, and I have beat the hell out of my Wheelyking and only broke one plastic part in five years.
I like the vertical chassis plates, battery compartments, and wheels. But a truck this large is going to have some heavy competition. Plastic shocks on an 800 dollar truck after tax? Also at this price point some name brand electronics would be nice. Lmk if I'm being over critical. Thx.
I was a huge Hpi fan in the past but they aren't consistent enough. They make kits then offer weak parts support and leave you high and dry....i had the hpi drift, mini,, flux and 1/5 baja.. they kill off the kits to fast..I sold them off..I like how traxxas, arrma, tamiya are relative for years..a weak attempt to come back to market and jump on the large scale truck scene with the rehash but it's so much outhere currently and the price on this is high IMO ima pass.
I've got an original version xs still running. Very hard to get parts for years but luckily it's pretty bullet proof unless you really mess up. I'd definitely buy another hpi machine.
Great review! Seems to me this Savage r/c is robust and strong. I have never owned a Monster R/C truck and have been wanting one for years. I've owned a Traxxas slash which was fun to run but not even close to the same with many aspects like of a monster truck. I do know one thing, my next r/c will be a monster truck. I will be running the truck just like the video. How would you rate this Savage X vs the Traxxas or Arma monster truck lines in the same price range out of the box? I appreciate anyone's feed back. Thank You!
I zip tie the capture pin holders together that go into the bumpers, they tend to move, wish they did some kind of failsafe for that, still a good truck
HPI savage was my absolute favorite- Conversation kit from nitro to flux was the best ever. Hope HPI makes it somehow. It would be enough for me if they only offered spare parts for their old models. By the way, no or heavy steering when stationary is typical Savage. You can do whatever you want, the servo saver catches any movement. I guess it's the axle geometry (Caster). But the drive train components are the strongest you can find in 1:8 scale: differentials with 29T/9T, Pins and outdrive of a diameter where Arrma and Traxxas can not keep up. Especially the hyped Arrma differentials look like toys. But overall price is to high, availability poor and the car body is a matter of taste.
Some pretty dated tech for the price. Does it come with the pinion required to hit the speed they’re advertising? Seems like you get a lot more from the competition for less money.
How is this truck expensive compared to similar 1/8 6s by traxxas and arrma? This hpi is literally the cheapest 1/8 scale 6s truck . the only one cheaper is by Redcar racing but it doesn't have any quality parts or electronics
The price is ridiculous. You can buy an EXB Talion or a Kraton roller, transmitter, receiver, motor, and esc for cheaper. I reached out to HPI and HRP and sent them price comparisons and then begged them to price both the Flux and Nitro more in line with the Comps.
Nice info and video as usual. How did you GPS break? I've had mine fly off even into concrete and it's still working great. My friend 3d printed a case for it and now I have it in there. It has a slot for a tie strap too. Nice truck on this video. Honestly I mostly do my GPS testing on dirt /grass when it's an off road vehicle since that's where it's going to run almost all the time.
@@rcdriver Oh yeah I've done that with many other micro USB ports on other devices. It's very easy to mess up! I really appreciate USB C devices since that is not a problem anymore.
HAD NITRO XXL , FAST but broke alot too high center of gravity caused it to roll alot and rear suspension same as front but uses turn buckles in rear too which like to break rear steering knuckles when landing on rear wheels which it likes to do ALOT MAYBE BRUSHLESS IS MORE STABLE N BALANCED ??
Very nice mate👌 The slide on the roof😖 53mph is nice though. I have the HPI Flux Truggy and I have no idea why but I can tell you out of all my RCs the Flux is still my #1 🤩
Hoping you can help. I bought this exact RC truck early 2022 and out of the box it was amazing the first run inside of a few minutes. Then I noticed it slowed down drastically and I brought it in and smelled some bad burning smell. I haven't had a lot of time to deal with it or tinker on as I have had to move and bought a house so I packed it up after I had already cooresponded with customer service HobbyRec or something like that and they are in Utah. 10 months later and I have a little time and their customer service is pretty good and still honored the warranty return of the motor which was their initial best guest. Replaced the motor and truck is still slow - will max at approximately 10 mph. So I wrote them and now they sent me a new ESC (both motor and ESC exact same as stock set) So I thought for sure after getting a new ESC and a new motor this brand new never run (except for that initial run 10 months ago) would now be fixed. Nope it still only goes 10 mph. And I ran it for only a couple of min this time too. My battery set p is the recommended just as the stock ESC already has two deans that connect making the two 3S batteries the same as runnng one 6S with 5000 mAh. What else do you think the problem could be??? I will say if I put my nose up close the middle between the ESC and motor smells (somewhere where that black cover with 4 screws is that would be somewhat over the motor's pinion gear. Is that what is causing it not to pick up speed? Why is it overheated in that region and it has a burnt smell to it? Sorry I don't want to call that part anything here because I'm not sure what it's called. Thanks.
Got mine delivered from Amazon 3rd party seller as none of my LHS carry HPI anymore and I’m in SoCal so it’s kind of bizarre. Anyway first run smelled burning 🔥 and sudden loss of power. Didn’t even run more than 5 min. Was running brand new LiPos 3S 11.1V 6200 mah, 100C (two to = 22.2V) Would you think it’s the motor or ESC or both that burned up? HRP doesn’t have any ESCs in stock (HRP handles all HPI warranty in the U.S.) I’ve had many mid-range to high-end ESC and motor combos since 2007 and nothing like this has ever happened before: Have you heard anyone else having this problem on this particular truck?
At $550 this would be an intriguing truck. At $770 it's ridiculously overpriced for what you get. No center differential, plastic shocks, forged ring and pinion instead of their machined ones, etc etc is kind of a slap in the face for being pretty much the most expensive one-eighth scale RTR monster truck you can buy. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it's a fine truck but you can get much more modern designs for much less these days.
But the thing is, the features you pointed out doesn’t matter to everyone. Everything you pointed out are valid observations, but in the end people buy what they’re interested in. For some the price doesn’t matter; fun, styling, previous experiences, intended use, etc play bigger roles in purchasing decisions. In RC, there’s something for everyone. 😄
@@rcdriver for sure there will be a small subset of people that will buy this based on nostalgia and another small subset that will buy it based on looks and nothing else but I feel like the majority of people in this hobby are going to be comparing this to other vehicles when they make a purchase decision and it's going to fall short. Trust me it hurts me to say this as I really like HPI but I just really feel like they missed the mark on the price on this one
correct my dude this beast still Awesome But there is something wrong in this truck? the wrong is the wheels and rims i don't like them the old ones was have beautiful wheels and rims this my opinion Amazing vid my dude 🤗 cheers yo🍺
Nice review . This truck is probably around $800 after tax . I owned an SS way back in 2000 and I loved it but compared to a Max with the wide arm kit it leaves a lot be desired for. They need to drop their price on that truck. I know that is a scale difference but performance wise. I want to like this truck but that price tag OUCH COME ON HPI WHO YOU PLAYAN
Because they don’t have to. Tamiya and Traxxas have old platforms that still sell really well today and they’re the biggest RC companies in the world. It’s smarter and more cost effective for companies to rework platforms. Full redesigns costs a whole lot more and for a company getting off the ground again, it’s good to see them do it the smart way by just tweaking their existing models.
@@cohensherrill3140 Happy to help! It’s always cool to see new stuff, but you (not you specifically) have to think about the other side. It’s expensive to manufacture a new car and I’d rather see them build their business up so it will be able to thrive and support consumers product & parts needs for years to come.
Brings back memories of working on my savage 21. Long ago. I hated working on it. Not user friendly at all. I wouldn’t buy one. Rc has come a long way since then. This is old technology.
I have my original savage ss. It is the equivalent of a Savage xl (super hd drivetrain) just without the xl plates. Has all the easy access and tougher plastic housings as well. I'm not sure what part you hate working on, it barely takes any time to get to anything.
They fixed a lot of the "difficulty" nuances with the x generation. You can access a diff in minutes now. Not many rc trucks have that quick access Now.
honestly I'd ditch the body, cut off the middle handle/tower and throw on a buggy body and spoiler... maybe even run it with no body at all, it is such a smooth package as it is..... the fan tower even looks kinda like a small pilots pod...

Good job Greg
Great review! Seems to me this Savage r/c is robust and strong. I have never owned a Monster R/C truck and have been wanting one for years. I've owned a Traxxas slash which was fun to run but not even close to the same with many aspects like of a monster truck. I do know one thing, my next r/c will be a monster truck. I will be running the truck just like the video. How would you rate this Savage X vs the Traxxas or Arma monster truck lines in the same price range out of the box? I appreciate anyone's feed back. Thank You!
Hey your so right about looking like the rivian truck. Also kinda looks like the old arrma Nero front end of the body. 👍👊
Right! I instantly thought Rivian. But yeah I see the front being Nero-ish too now.
How does this compare to the xl flux gtxl.
I still have my Nitro Savage SS Kit, with a 3 speed transmission and it runs like a scolded dog. Nice video.
Some pretty dated tech for the price. Does it come with the pinion required to hit the speed they’re advertising? Seems like you get a lot more from the competition for less money.
I see there is a wheelie bar on the savage x box under the lip of the top flap. What's the name and part number of that new wheelie bar?
Would i be fine running two stock wheels in rear with two power hobby belted scorpions in front?
One thing i've noticed about all the new HPI line-up, they're all extremely expensive, which is sadly a huge turn off. Thanks for sharing.
How is this truck expensive compared to similar 1/8 6s by traxxas and arrma? This hpi is literally the cheapest 1/8 scale 6s truck . the only one cheaper is by Redcar racing but it doesn't have any quality parts or electronics
@@rcengland8227 that’s what I thought.. they all keep saying too expensive but I think they’re not comparing them to the same scale
@@rcengland8227 how about the Associated mt8
do you like the losi lmt or this more?
suspension is like early savage 25 got several but you can do dual shocks and they look exactly like savage 25 shocks ,, staring at them now.
Looks really neat and well built. But those tires looks like its gonna strip out real fast on hard surface.
Where is this track at, I’m in CT also
The price is ridiculous. You can buy an EXB Talion or a Kraton roller, transmitter, receiver, motor, and esc for cheaper.
I reached out to HPI and HRP and sent them
price comparisons and then begged them to price both the Flux and Nitro more in line with the Comps.
Believe it or not, plugging it in to charge it. The USB input broke off the board. When I took it apart, it didn't appear to be soldered well.
@@rcdriver Oh yeah I've done that with many other micro USB ports on other devices. It's very easy to mess up! I really appreciate USB C devices since that is not a problem anymore.
RCDriver, where you live in US ?
We need some 8s kraton videos!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome Truck! Ugly Price! 😎
Is this the v1 or v2 savage x?
Hell yeah bother 😎 😏 👌
Wowwww that’s cool 😎
A Tamiya video is coming soon, I can feel it :D
HAD NITRO XXL , FAST but broke alot too high center of gravity caused it to roll alot and rear suspension same as front but uses turn buckles in rear too which like to break rear steering knuckles when landing on rear wheels which it likes to do ALOT
MAYBE BRUSHLESS IS MORE STABLE N BALANCED ??
Would make a sick tekno mt410 clear body 🤔
Very nice mate👌
The slide on the roof😖 53mph is nice though.
I have the HPI Flux Truggy and I have no idea why but I can tell you out of all my RCs the Flux is still my #1 🤩
RCDriver-Online what do you think of the 1/10 brushed Arama???
Thanks.
Sounds like centerdiff/slipper clutch to be honest.
Just tighten the slipper clutch it's not rocket science. Same thing happened to me. Slipper isn't properly setup from factory but it's easy to do it.
There's nothing rivian about that body. Enjoy the vids👍
Well someone else in the comments agreed with me. 😂
@@rcdriver lol, all good
Love the new truck but not the body and definitely not the price. Hopefully chop shops get their hands on it and I'll just build my own
🔴🔴🔴💯💯💯🔴🔴🔴
Got mine delivered from Amazon 3rd party seller as none of my LHS carry HPI anymore and I’m in SoCal so it’s kind of bizarre. Anyway first run smelled burning 🔥 and sudden loss of power. Didn’t even run more than 5 min.
Was running brand new LiPos 3S 11.1V 6200 mah, 100C (two to = 22.2V)
Would you think it’s the motor or ESC or both that burned up? HRP doesn’t have any ESCs in stock (HRP handles all HPI warranty in the U.S.)
I’ve had many mid-range to high-end ESC and motor combos since 2007 and nothing like this has ever happened before: Have you heard anyone else having this problem on this particular truck?
Kevin Talbot has a good way of reinforcing the bodies of his cars.
I used it on my cars and its great.
I agree. Look at how Redcat priced the Kaiju EXT. Now that’s more appropriate especially with the same power system
correct my dude this beast still Awesome But there is something wrong in this truck? the wrong is the wheels and rims i don't like them the old ones was have beautiful wheels and rims this my opinion
Amazing vid my dude 🤗 cheers yo🍺
Ahhhh...still no center diff.
Still a Wheel Hex Stripper?
Didn’t have an issue. I show a close up of the wheel hex area on the wheel. Lots of extra plastic there.
No rollcage attach to the body is weak idea like their Baja 5sc/5t .
Still has the inferior forged diffs instead of the machined diffs. Machined will always be stronger.
if i where hpi, i would have chosen bigger wheels and different tread pattern, imma change it out for some maxx wheels and tires.
lmao those wheels and tires at 100 times better than the ones on the Maxx. They're also max bigger. Wtf are you talking about..
Lol this drives much better than the Maxx and it's 6s with much larger wheels. No comparison really..
Should have got a nitro savage. There are plenty of electric Mts out there.
810€ in France this is too much
Great video, but I feel bad for HPI. Why can’t they do anything really new?
Because they don’t have to. Tamiya and Traxxas have old platforms that still sell really well today and they’re the biggest RC companies in the world. It’s smarter and more cost effective for companies to rework platforms. Full redesigns costs a whole lot more and for a company getting off the ground again, it’s good to see them do it the smart way by just tweaking their existing models.
Thank for the info.
It does look very powerful and fast. I appreciate you responding. Thumbs up man!!
@@cohensherrill3140 Happy to help! It’s always cool to see new stuff, but you (not you specifically) have to think about the other side. It’s expensive to manufacture a new car and I’d rather see them build their business up so it will be able to thrive and support consumers product & parts needs for years to come.
👍🏼
I can see where they sorta copied the Arrma Talion on the front grill for the test, but still got the answer wrong.
That little guy is going to be getting destroyed by many a basher! And those gawd awful shocks! WTH? Get with the times HPI!
Not sure its worth the money they want for it tbh, it's mega expensive
🤔hpi savage flux 1/5 v2
That would be cool. With more focus on large scale nowadays, I think that would do better in this market.

Всём здоровье.
Nice truck, but I just like the look of my Kraton EXB much more.
Opinions, This or a notorious? Why?
The og savage was absolutely sick, still have mine but man this looks ugly as hell😢
Life must be hard with such horrible taste.. It's gorgeous.
this truck is 84% identical to the old savage. disappointing.
For that price heck no👎👎👎
It seems not to be the same quality, HPI WAS THE BESRT BUT THE NEW it look like toy grade rc
Electric toy
Extreme garbage! Same old HPI 👎 they cut way too many corners, what I wanna know is where are all these changes your talking about?🤔
Waiting for them to re-release the touring car kit .. hopefully with some improvements...
