Thank you so much for such a lengthy and complete review of this mattress. I've been struggling for months with this as they're are tons of mattress reviews out there and they all have different opinions as to which mattress is the best or not. With that, they all cancel eachothers findings out because of this. The more reviews I read, the more confused I've become. But you made it easier because you were able to include much more information and the reasons why you felt this way or that about the mattress.
In this era of quick 15 second soundbites everyone wants all the information, but they don't want to take the time to listen to it or read it! So we can't have both, not if we want an extensive run down on the products we seek to buy.

To your point, for reasons I completely understand, consumers often begin their mattress shopping process hoping / looking for easy answers. But as you have discovered, the reality is that no one mattress is a good match for everyone. As such, what mattress shoppers actually need is personalized information to help them find the right match for their unique needs and preferences.
Unfortunately, many consumers never make this discovery, because there are so many scheisters out there nowadays who are more than happy to provide information that looks "easy" (and thus makes them a quick buck) but in reality makes no sense -- such as assigning a generic star rating to each mattress, or creating generic lists of the "best mattresses." (How can a mattress be given a "4.8 star" rating, or be deemed in the "Top 5" mattresses, when the same mattress that is 5 stars for one person can very legitimately be 1 star for someone else...?)

Thx for the review. I would say I like that the middle layer (grey) recovers more slowly because it is denser (firmer) and that's what you want there - a more supportive layer. The top layer is softer and has a quicker bouncing back ability so that your shoulder & hips have a softer foam to sink into (more give & pressure points are relieved)

Yoooo, even before the review having an icon and a jingle is some clean, pro stuff! It sticks your brand right the beginning with two senses, and effectively becomes pinned in the mind. The Japanese have done it in their commercials for decades, and honestly, having lived there, I think it’s a much more pleasant way of being presented with something in a marketing context.
Is deeper than average good for side sleepers? I sleep on my side and find dipping down in the hip hurts my lower back. What type do you recommend?
Can I use a Full XL in a 48X80 waterbed frame if it sat down into the framed sides? The expansion would normally be 54X80, but I am wondering if it would stop expanding once it reach the width limits?

Hi there -- Thanks for your comment. We completely empathize with the confusion you're feeling... FWIW, be aware that over the past couple years there are suddenly a lot of people who have declared themselves to be "expert" mattress reviewers. Unfortunately, most of them are just the digital equivalent of the sleazy mattress salesman. Often they say things like "this is one of the best beds of 2017" or "it's really comfortable" or "I give it 4.5 stars" -- these things are designed to make everyone watching/reading think that this mattress will be great for them. However, the reality is that no mattress is good for everyone (let alone 4.5 stars or "the best" for everyone) -- so any review that presents information like that can simply be disregarded.
I hope that's helpful for your future mattress shopping.

Hi +Rickyfyied -- Thanks for your question. No, I'm afraid we only did an in-depth review of the 14" model, since it is their most popular model. I would expect the 16" model to be pretty similar to this in most respects though, albeit with a bit more softness, a bit deeper cushioning, and perhaps a bit more memory feel.
I bought the LUCID 16 inch Plush version because I'm a side sleeper.

Is this medium or plush? Not by your opinion but which lucid option is this matress? Their plush or their medium? After weeks of searching the web for my new matress I lucid medium because the plush gets a many complaints and like too soft, sinking in and more. One of the worst ratings it got on Amazon was 2 stars and a "don't buy the plush" warning. That reviewer previously owned the lucid medium and they(him and his wife) loved the matress 3 yrs. But they both agree that the plush just shouldn't be bought or sold.

OK so I actually just returned this mattress. I'm a side sleeper and this really hurt my shoulders, not much give imo. If you're lighter, say 125ish lbs this just doesn't have enough give.
Hi Eleni -- Thanks for sharing your experience with this mattress. Did you have the exact model from this video (14" Gel Memory Foam) or a different Lucid model? Either way, I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you. It sounds like you weren't getting adequate pressure relief (generally the cause of pain in the shoulders for a side sleeper). Although I mentioned in the video that I did experience a little of this myself, I'm a bit surprised that it would be even more pronounced for someone that is quite a bit lighter than me. Have you had this issue on other mattresses in the past or is this the first mattress that has given you shoulder pain when sleeping on your side? That being said, lighter side sleepers like you do tend to need more softness in general, so it's certainly possible that this mattress wasn't ideal for you on that front. We classify this mattress as a Medium level of softness, and I would guess that if you take our match quiz, it would probably recommend something a bit softer for you than that (unless you tell it that you prefer a harder feel, for example). As an aside, if you're shopping for a new mattress now, I'd recommend taking that quiz as a good place to start.

I just brought a 10 inch lucid gel memory foam mattress firmest one they had and it was great for the first few days and then the center just sunk in and it sucks, my back and sides hurt every morning, I’m looking for a thick mattress topper to try to fill in the middle
Unfortunately, mattress toppers are not the best at providing support when there's an issue with the underlying mattress. What kind of foundation is it resting on? A firm, flat surface could add more support where a topper could not!
@@goodbed I have a full bed metal bed frame with 9 bars across and 1 large bar up the middle , I keep on reading that if I put plywood on the bottom it won’t sag so I’m not sure 🤔
@@BigE-qx1jb Hmmm. This does not sound like quite enough support to me. You might try putting the mattress on the floor to see if that improves support? If so, then a firmer foundation would help.

Hi +lanna -- Thanks for your question. We don't use a numeric scale to describe softness. Instead, we use plain English terms to classify mattresses on this dimension. Our softness classifications go from Very Firm to Firm to Medium-Firm to Medium to Medium-Soft to Soft to Very Soft.
Overall, we classify this mattress as a Medium level of softness. As we noted in the video, it's slightly softer than a straight-up Medium, but not soft enough that we would classify it as a Medium-Soft.

Mine is actually to firm for me. I have back problems and when I slept on this my back hurt worse.Its a nice mattress just to firm for me.

Are these mattresses going to be hotter due to the material?
Hi Jessica -- Thanks for your question and sorry I missed this earlier. You can see our full discussion of temperature at 13:26 in this video. The short answer is that if sleeping hot is a significant concern for you (particularly if it's been an issue for you in the past), then there are certainly other mattresses that are going to offer more airflow and/or more features that are specifically designed to keep you cool than this one. That said, there are plenty of people who do *not* sleep hot on memory foam mattresses, including on this one. So if you have never had an issue with sleeping hot, then you shouldn't necessarily think that you will sleep hot on this one. I hope that helps.

Hi Robert. Softness -- whether a mattress feels softer or firmer to you -- is separate and distinct from support and spinal alignment. That is, whether you like a mattress that feels softer or firmer is a personal preference as opposed to support, which is a requirement for any mattress.
So for support, factors like sleep position and body weight come into play. Does this mattress have fiberglass glass in it?
It's hard to say for sure, but it's a good bet. All mattresses sold in the US must have a flame-retarding "fire sock". Typically it looks like a thin cover over the mattress that's underneath the regular cover. The fire sock can be made of a lot of different materials, but one of the cheapest is fiberglass. Higher end mattresses will use wool as a fire sock material. Others use chemical fire retardants applied to fabric.
We most often see fiberglass fire socks on imported mattresses. Lucid mattresses are made in China, so they'd be more likely to use a fiberglass fire sock. The only way to know for sure is to give them a call. Here's their phone number: (888) 975-8243

I’ve tried memory foam and the gel memory foam. I can’t stand either. Those mattresses are for people who like being stuck in a cacoon. I will be trying a medium talaley latex. I’ve read many reviews about talaley latex and the mojority were great.
Hi +Anna42132 -- Thanks for your comment. Given what you described, I think you're on the right track by looking into latex mattress options. Talalay latex still provides great pressure relief but without that "slow melt" memory sensation. It also tends to provide more of a sensation of floating on top of your bed, which contrasts with the "cocoon" sensation that you didn't like. If you want to find good latex mattress options that you can buy online, I'd suggest going to this page and using the Filters at the top to filter by Latex:

As an aside that may be more for the benefit of other readers, your experience does illustrate a very important point about mattresses, which is that everyone's needs and preferences are different. So while some people love features like the melting memory foam feel or the feeling of being more hugged or cradled by your bed, others (like you) can't stand such things. There's no better or worse when it comes to mattress features like these -- just personal preference.

I'm afraid that this is the only Lucid model for which we have done an in-depth review so it's the only one for which I can speak with 100% confidence about its softness. In addition, softness tends to be very relative and subjective, so it would be very hard to say whether any of the mattresses that Lucid offers would be one that you would consider to be "firm." That said, here is a list of all the models in the Lucid lineup, at least one of which is listed as "Medium-Firm":

Hi Jar -- Thank you for clarifying that. I certainly agree with you that consumer reviews are extremely important and valuable. I'm not sure if you know much about our website (GoodBed.com), but we actually started this company 10 years ago to provide an independent review platform that is specific to mattresses -- where consumers can find trustworthy ratings from real mattress owners. It is a completely bespoke platform that even allows you to filter mattress ratings to only see ratings from other people like you (e.g., people of similar age, weight, gender, sleep position, etc.). I'm glad to say that since then, nearly a quarter million mattress owners have submitted ratings on this platform, making it by far the largest independent platform for consumer mattress reviews. I really hope you will check it out.
Separately, I also agree with you that the editorial reviews that we do on RUclips are completely different from a consumer review. Their purpose is to use our expertise to help consumers understand all the characteristics of a given mattress in a clear and comprehensive way, which is something that would be very difficult to find in an ordinary consumer review.
