  • Originally filmed LIVE on Facebook, this fun video is all about how to finish our coloring pages with a pastel background. I demonstrate how to use soft pastels alone and with stencils. I also describe the differences between soft and oil pastels and how to finish your project with a fixative spray. Your coloring books are going to look fantastic with this fun technique!
    Join me at my next LIVE Facebook event. I have them every Wednesday at 12:30 pm Mountain time. We learn new things, laugh, and have fun.

    Take A wet paint brush to the cheap hard pastels and you can use them almost like watercolor or pencil tip to tip technique. The color pay off is more intense than the soft rubbing and buffing. Its not a great quality product like a good set of watercolor or watercolor pencils but another way to get more Bang for your buck out of your supplies and a way to try new techniques with fewer supplies before you invest too much money on something you might not like.
    Just be sure to let your pastels dry out before you put the lid back on and store them away. I sure hope you try it I think you’ll be surprised.

    I also purchased that set at Michaels. For the use I make of it, which is like you, backgrounds only, and the price I paid for, I am very satisfied with them and I would recommand them to everyone. Thanks for sharing

    Hi Colouring Bliss Community, As a hairdresser I would not recommend hairspray as a fixative for your art work. Yes hairspray will work as a final layer especially hairspray from hairdresser not the supermarket. Most hairsprays are P.h.on the acid side due to hair being around 5.5-6.5 acidic P.h. I know that the paper should be acid free so I don’t know what effect of the hairspray might have over time and possible pigment changes. On another note using eyeshadows and blush in your colouring pages you are again using an acidic product due to skin being P.h. 4.5-5.5 so an even more acidic items. I can foresee archival issues. Of course it’s art so if you prefer or want to use hair and skin products in your work then go for it.

    Thank you for this video on how to use soft pastels for coloring our backgrounds. Doing it by pencil would take so very long and look very lined. I had not thought of using stencils either. You are right about the pastels being very messy. Trying to use a Q-tip directly on the pastel block itself did not work well for me. The pastel mashed onto the Q-tip really strongly and would only lay down one dark spot and only spread super lightly out from that. It seemed to want to stick onto the cotton. How can I get it to let go in the small spaces I am trying to color, please?

    I just finished a coloring book where the back of the page has the story. Ive wanted for a long time to try to make a sun rise/set. I have the Derwent pastel pencils. On one of the fairy pages playing with firefly, I started at the top with a blue, the next was a pink and last a yellow. I just scribbled around her with the side of the pencils. I then took a Kleenex and rubbed all three colors sort of side to side into the paper so that the pink went into the blue and yellow, and the other two into the pink giving me a lovely sunset. Because there was great tooth on the paper, what wasn't in the paper, was on the the Kleenex, I did not spray it with a fixative. I rubbed my fingers across the paper before I made my decision...nothing came off.

    Not sure why, but this was the second time I watched this video, and on full screen and regular screen, the video was restricted to a band in the middle of the screen and the right and left sides were blacked over. I don't know if this was only a problem on my computer or not, but the first time I watched this video, it was normal full screen. Did this happen to anyone else today?

    I know there are hard pastels called "nupastels," which are from Prismacolor I believe. I have them and they are more for drawing than filling in. I did purchase them from A.C. Moore and only grabbed them because they were on clearance for dirt cheap! Lol TFS! Great video!

    Now, what happens if you take the cottonpads, dotted in colors, and humidify it with water and paint around with it on a piece of paper?

    • @ColoringBliss
      @ColoringBliss  7 лет назад +1

      +Chara Choppel, great idea! I played around with rubbing alcohol a little during the LIVE event but the smell was too strong for my migraine, lol. I didn't have great success during the LIVE event so I left it out of this edited video, but I want to try again because pastel artists use water and other wet media with their pastels all the time. Soooo much fun!

    Thank you so much for making this video !!!! It was very helpful !!! I was wondering how to colour the backgrounds using soft pastel if we want to colour the image first with the wax based coloured pencils since wax based coloured pencils get tinted with the soft pastels.
    Thank you for the post it note tip as well. This is amazing !!!
    I think shooting the video in horizontal would be better for some viewers.
    Also is there anything else that can be used apart from cotton pads or cotton balls? Can a reusable piece of fabric be used?
    Could you please tell us how to make a glow effect?

    • @sugarcandy243
      @sugarcandy243 6 лет назад

      Alfiya Khan You can use soft cotton fabric to spread the pastel powder. For a simple glow effect, use a range of light and dark colors around your design.
      For example, suppose you have a page with 2 birds in a tree. In the center, use yellow in a circle. Then orange, then red, then dark magenta etc. Keep going in concentric circles until you reach the end of the page. That'll give you a lovely glow effect.
      Oil based pencils like Polychromos can resist the pastels so you can go over them easily. But for wax based pencils like prismacolor, you can go over the edges of your design with a blender pencil and burnish with hard pressure. That'll set the colors into the paper. Now you can use pastels on top without any problem!
      I hope this helps.
