Good God. What a great break down of this killer tune. I sat and watched it all the way through without even picking up my guitar. That satisfying. Tomorrow I hit it again guitar in hand.
I watched Joe walsh play this on a telecaster last year in Philadelphia. And he went on to say “ it was easier being 20 in the 70’s. Then being 70 in the 20’s. He killed it and mention the tele was his favorite guitar when he started the song. He asked for his favorite guitar to a stage hand, and they handed him his telecaster.
As others have remarked, thanks for doing a comprehensive lesson on this, as virtually all I have come across omit the signature short but sweet guitar solo break.
Yes Bro! Nice..this is always my warm up song everyday... Joe rips that one finger vibrato man..his a busy bugger in a simple way.. Most underrated player there is .. Very nice mate cheers..
Another great classic song. Been playing this one for years, but you provided a nice tune-up for me. Thx! Another song that has a nice backing track with original vocals that can be found on RUclips. If anyone’s reading I use the memo section on my iPhone for shortcuts to over 100 songs. I label them under “My Songs.” I then place the name of each artist and make a shortcut to the various backing tracks. Great fun rocking for hours!
This song is a rock and roll anthem. Every band used to do it.Kind of like smoke on the water purple haze sunshine of you love and day tripper paperback writer, And walk away also by the james gang
Thanks! I'm an old schooler, and I appreciate your accurate lessons so I can keep crossing off my bucket list guitar songs. I still have the good hair, though 😂
Thank you! I watched a couple other videos on learning this song ... great start but your video was amazingly enlightening and confirmed for me what I thought my ears heard! Cheers! Sub'd ...
I agree with Jim H--this is the best teaching video on the song. I've been playing it pretty well, but knew I didn't sound like Joe. I don't know if I can do that double picking technique as well as you or he, but I'm going to try to learn. I'm also trying to improve my vibrato on the A7 chord.
Thanks for the extras on your Patreon site as well. Learning “Like the record” is great, I make my backing tracks from the record recordings using Moises app to separate or enhance up to 5 tracks from a song. In this case I’ll boost drums, reduce bass guitar and almost completely delete guitar to practice with.
Just to let you know - on the descending Am riff - he's, actually, picking, each note. I found this out because I was doing it how you were doing it, with a pull-off on the second note, because it felt more natural to me. However, if you listen to the album recording, he's picking each of the first 5 notes, at least. Otherwise, I thank you for this lesson!
Please do a woodshed episode on Rainbow’s Man on the silver mountain. I love hearing the bell ring, I m like a kid opening up a Christmas present. Love you man, love your product 👍👍👍👍
I saw a video interview with Joe Walsh a few years ago , He said people spend all kind of money on equipment to try and get this iconc sound Joe said H e had a fender champ amp with a 9 inch speaker and cranked it up to get the responce for the song
Who gave you my set list?? If you do Picture Book by the Kinks, Lazy Sunday by Small Faces, and Friday on my Mind by the Easybeats I will freak out. Great channel. Who needs tabs? Your playin it right in front o me face
I learned it from a youtube vid that left out the pickow on the four microtones and I knew something was missing. I saw a vid where Joe himself explained that part.
I agree on the Telecaster; that’s what it sounds like to me but Walsh has been on the record saying it was a Strat. I also know Walsh had a Telecaster since the early days that he had hotrodded.
Speaking of little practice amps that sound great when cranked. My first "real" amp, was a 1968 Fender Musicmaster Bass amp. It kicked ass when I ran my 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong plexiglass guitar through it. 👍
@@12footchain And you know what? I was 15 years old and had that amp given to me by my best friend. We also swapped guitars. I gave him my Kent semi hollow body, and he gave me his Dan Armstrong. When I look at what that amp goes for used today I cringe. The Dan Armstrong too. Mine came with two interchangeable pickups. Yikes! I was thinking the other day, and made a list of all of the guitars I've owned since the early 1970s. Then, I went on "Reverb" and started pricing them. Good lord! Four Gibson Les Paul Customs - 76, 79, 86, 90, one Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top - 73, one Les Paul Standard 77, one Gibson SG Custom - 73, one Firebird V -76, one Flying V - 74, one Fender Telecaster Custom - 74, two Ampeg Dan Armstrongs - both 1969, three Fender Precision basses - 73, 78, 83. There were several more. Then I started adding up what all of the Marshall 100 watt heads and 4×12 cabinets go for. And those rare Marshall 8×10 cabs. When I got to $100k, I stopped.
This is a comment for the commenter, or is it commentators, commentors, hmmmm.... I'm not sure. Anyone? This will distract me to no logical end, sometimes I can go through the most difficult passages of really technical pieces of music, no problem, but it's the little details I can't get right in my head, it'll sound fine, but, not being sure of exactly or, authentically how it is played mechanically, it will drive me nuts!!! So much so, that I almost deleted my comment because I totally lost the question I had for the sensai,(author, teacher).....to whom I would like to extend a big thank you to for his awesome taste and knowledge of the songs I love!
Great, esp. microtone part - takes excellent control and feel. Also want to point out, during #48, when you did ring finger bend(multi. strings), how much the elbow go away from body for strength-stability. Badass. Ü♫
If you're like me and are having trouble hybrid picking the "chicken picken" part of the intro, you can also do it with your thumb and first finger, just move the pick over between your first and middle finger while doing it, it's how I've always done it and sounds about the same.
I thought Walsh was doing the initial pulloffs the way you show it too, BUT, if you listen carefully to the record, he never goes to the D string. Maybe he does that live but using a slow-downer on that riff I don't hear the open D at all. Actually seems to end on an open G. Sounds great regardless though.
This is the BEST video for funk 49, of all of them. Thanks for showing the nuances. And it was a blast to hear you play through the song.
This is the nastiest Joe Walsh song ever. Thanks for posting, one of my top five favorite songs.
Good God. What a great break down of this killer tune. I sat and watched it all the way through without even picking up my guitar. That satisfying. Tomorrow I hit it again guitar in hand.
I Did the EXACT same thing, Just Watched first, and enjoyed, late night, fresh with Guitar in hand tomorrow 😊
I learned something new today ! Been playing it wrong for years, even teaching it wrong 😂. You’re the deal.
So glad you got the reverse hybrid picking on the declining bend in the intro correct. It makes the sound more like the recording.
For those that care he played the entire concert thru a Mesa Boogie white in color that I believe was a California model 2 x12
awesome
Such a cool classic. I'm a keyboard player in a Joe Walsh tribute band, but on my own time, love noodling around on guitar. Great tutorial!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
As others have remarked, thanks for doing a comprehensive lesson on this, as virtually all I have come across omit the signature short but sweet guitar solo break.
I really enjoyed this lesson. You tapped into Joe's playing perfectly but still gave it your personality. Thanks Doug. "Mark
First time I've seen a reveal of that break towards the end. Good stuff!

Nice 12 Ft, always loved James Gang. Another fabulous lesson and thanks for taking the time with the walk through ♪♫♪♫♪
Fabulous. So close , and brilliantly demonstrated.
Dude! Great job all around: explanation, pace, style, etc.
Can’t wait to dig in. That 2nd riff after the break has always been a nemesis. Lol
Thats a masterpiece by Joe 👍 Your breakdown is spot on!
Still a seminal piece of work, TODAY!! Very good tutorial!!! Thanx Doug!!!

Very cool. I had completely forgotten Funk 48. Thanks for reminding me.
You are amazing.
Love Joe Walsh also .. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 great vid mate . Love it . More Joe please and thank you 🙏🏻 ✌🏻✌🏻
I like this song and I learned how to play don’t take your guns to town by Johnny Cash on the acoustic guitar

Great lesson! You always pick a noteworthy song!❤
Well done, great tutorial as usual! We do this tune and "Rocky Mountain Way" in the band I'm in....Joe Walsh guitar licks are 'oh so tasty'!!!!

Great song of the ages and thanks for the lesson!
I think Joe himself would be impressed by your rendition of this smokin tune!
every one a winner , nice one!

Shockingly - I've been playing this (mostly) *RIGHT* for the last ~20yrs !
Nice!
I rock 48 and 49 often. The Bomber off the *second* (oops) record is killer too.
Great lesson as usual 👍
Joe has a Funk 50 now too !!!
holy crap you are right! Just listened, hadn't heard that before, thanks!

Well covered!!
The bootleg of Funk 47 is where it's really at....
I've never heard it, but if it exists - i bet it's cool
Way beyond my skill level, but maybe one day, with the help of your excellent video ......
Please do a woodshed episode on Rainbow’s Man on the silver mountain. I love hearing the bell ring, I m like a kid opening up a Christmas present. Love you man, love your product 👍👍👍👍
1st. One of my favorites.
Nice job bro I was wondering were he was bending out on the second solo thanks

Killer tutorial
Thank You

Thanks a lot.
I like Funk #48 better, it is really slinky and I love the extra reverb. Great lesson, highly accurate!

Your exactly right, I’ve saw that same video
Finally a guy that got that chicken pickin' part at 100% thank you!
Thanks! Isn't there a Funk 50, so we have a Funk Trilogy.
and a combined Funk 147
Cheers...
Great lesson. "Life's Been Good" ?
On the Funk #48 riff, try pulling the double-stop bend down instead of up. It's easier (for me anyway).
If you're like me and are having trouble hybrid picking the "chicken picken" part of the intro, you can also do it with your thumb and first finger, just move the pick over between your first and middle finger while doing it, it's how I've always done it and sounds about the same.
This might be a stupid question, but on the double notes, how are getting the first note to be dead before you pick the next note with your finger
It's being muted by my right hand as I pluck it
@@12footchainoh okay,I see now. Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it

There’s a guy here on YT named Peter G that does a great performance of that kick ass bass on Funk 48. Check it out now, funk soul brothers! 🤣
I've seen children on RUclips play this just like Joe. They're out there.
❤️❤️❤️
Every amp is a practice amp...trust me 👍
Any chance of Life in the Fast Lane? Sorry if this isn’t in the right place to ask!
Great video - missing one chucka after the A chord after the drum break. Sorry I’m anal that way- don’t kill the messenger!!
I reserve the right to be wrong. It’s probably exactly how it REALLY goes Lol
I think he's chicken pickin that whole intro in later versions
Greasy
This sucks, I can only hit the like button once!!!! I think it's against the law,in N.E. Ohio, not to love the james gang. Bommer lesson????
Dude I think you’d probably be a good teacher if you just didn’t talk so much. Cut back on the talking a bit and just show how to play the song
Thanks!
Thank you!
