  • Employees from Fujitsu, the company behind the IT system that resulted in the Post Office wrongfully prosecuting more than 900 operators, give evidence at the inquiry

So it now seems, due to internal communications between post office board and their lawyers, that they had knowledge of faults with the HORIZON system yet buried the evidence whilst still continuing with prosecutions. This is corporate criminality and the lawyers should be struck off. Then both board and lawyers should be given prison sentences.

Here is the thing, apart from all the other aspects of this affair the role of Lord Neuberger in the Recusal seems to have escaped attention.
I have therefore pasted the following ‘The role of Lord Neuberger in the recusal fiasco (Justice Fraser) should be investigated’ on as many RUclips articles as I could, about ten, but when I checked to see if there was any response I discovered they had all been taken down.
This Kafkaesque episode staggers one at every turn, even when Big brother has been outed he seems to be still working away!
I really want to know why Lord Neuberger interfered , if the recusal had succeeded the whole noble attempt at taking on the stinking system would have failed.

Bit of advice for anyone who is ever involved in maintaining a system that is as buggy as Horizon is. Leave, get a job elsewhere, go back to uni, spend a year hiking. This is a system that had at least one programmer who didn't deal with error conditions. They then attempted to identify errors by looking for patterns in the audit output, that seems a bit risky. They fixed other errors by remotely reentering data. This should have been done through a special application. You shouldn't have trouble with conflicts from running end of day. Run it at midnight and lock everyone out while it is run.

A lot of people in the comments think most of these witnesses lack competence in their jobs, and using that to explain the current situation. Understand that these witnesses knew EXACTLY what they were doing from day #1 - that once court cases started to appear and convictions/jail/etc handed out, the PO, Fujitsu etc's #1 priority was to cover up Horizon's bugs/faults. This is painfully obvious in all those historical documents. The massive fallout of having conviction after conviction overturned was clearly too great a 'burden', so they took the cowards way out and tried to hide the truth.
Let's hope this enquiry is not controlled by cowards.

What a clunky system Horizon is. It's an accounting system that's clearly not fit for purpose. It clearly falls short when it comes to handling errors such as power and comms failures. Surely the post office execs would have been aware of these flaws shortly after it's roll out. So for Vennells to tell parliament, the press, the courts, year after year, that the system was robust she was obviously lying. She has clearly signaled to her corporate team to repeat nothing but bold face lies for which she deserves serious condemnation. This is the problem with promoting none technical, autocratic spin merchants into positions of authority who are only concerned with profits at the expense of peoples lives and justice. The damage and injustice we see here is a result of one eyed, callous, corporate psychopathy in action.

Having watched the first 90 min or so of this... What seems odd to me is the fact network outages could obviously cause imbalances.. I understand the network traffic is used to keep things appearing real time, but why on earth didn't they maintain a local database that recorded all the transactions too. Then if that was submitted as a batch at a scheduled time (i.e. each Post Office has a timeslot during the night to submit the summary so as to not overwhelm the system), that could be used to make sure everything reconciled and produced reporting off that - before any kind of prosecution case was commenced. I can understand making changes to the core system that handles all the network traffic would be risky, but bolting on a database update should have been relatively straightforward to integrate. Ironically it seemed to be the peak traffic that was causing issues at End Of Day. And heck you wouldn't even need to send the summary, just keep it on the drive at the servers in the post office themselves - archive the data annually etc onto backups. Use it when there were disputes to double check.

One of the important actions that I think is imperative is to switch to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Post Office Operations. IT moves on and AWS is one of the leading software platforms on the market. This is a recurring problem that Government always picks old technology that delivers a poor service, low reliability and a high error rate. The sooner we drop Fujitsu the better.
