Hell my mother just married a white man lol. Now, there are still a few small hick towns that are known for racism, but all us Normal folks black and white simply stay away🤣. My husband recently had a flat on side the highway, and a white man who lived closed, came and helped him pushed his truck into his yard. They drank beer for hours, as if they'd known each other their entire lives. When I came to pick my husband up finally, the white man said that the few hours he spent talking and drinking with my husband was the best time he'd had in a long time. And that he was now considered a brother to him... I love it here.

I am latino and love it here. My channel is growing. These people take good care of me and i am in elmore county.. really rural. ❤️ for every racist in alabama there is a interracial couple . I love the people here.
My daughter told me the same thing. She wants me to move there. She doesn't want me to end up in another nursing home. Luckily my stay was a short one. After experiencing a few months there, I know that I am blessed to have a daughter who cares.
I've lived here 20 years. In terms of racism, sure there are some everywhere. But one of the things that i've thought a lot about is that I've heard less racial slurs being used here than when I lived in NYC. There it was a daily basis, here it's very seldom. Also, I was a foster parent for several years. we had children of various races, clearly not biological. No one had an issue with it, in fact most people would say encouraging comments. Alabama is a great place to live.
To me(grew up in Chicago, but am VERY knowledgeable about the South since both sides of my family are from there, and have spent a lot of time down there), I've always thought outsiders not from the South overblow how much racism there is in the South. It's like down there people are more open if they are racist, whereas up in Chicago people are more closeted if they have racist views. Honestly though, I get the sense very few are racist. Not to forget what doesn't help in Chicago, is thst historically a lot of neighborhoods were self segregated among races. This is slowly changing in Chicago and more neighborhoods are integrating, but I think it'll be a very long term process before certain neighborhoods ever integrate.
The “thick accent” thing also depends on what part of Bama you’re from. I felt out of place when I moved from middle ish part of AL to Mobile AL because there were NO thick accents. I had to move back. Most of these questions can be answered by “it depends on what part of AL you’re in”. Where I’m from EVERYONE owns and carries. And as far as the “marrying cousins” stereotype.. NO!
Me too! People can be great! Living in NY now though I can say different! People up here are too damn uptight! Always running for something! But from growing up in Alabama I most definitely am hospitable! I make people feel all warm & cosey when they come to my house!
I live in Alabama and I see a little racism but very little and we have a lot of mixed race neighborhoods and a lot of diversity and get along with each other well
I'm from Alabama. Unfortunately racism does still exist here, but it's not nearly as bad or as common as people in the media make it out to be. Racism in some form exists everywhere though, not just in the Southern USA. The vast majority of us are good folks who get along well with everyone and try our best to treat everyone with respect and kindness. My wife is from California, so she can attest that we do in fact have country accents. Mine is particularly strong, according to her. lol Neat video, thanks for sharing!
Halfway through and I noticed that cute little girl is holding a chicken. I mean come on, you gotta love Alabama! Also the comment about Birmingham and Huntsville having other places to shop was good. But people still go to Walmart.
That woman in front of Wal-Mart doesn't sound like she was born in Alabama. Love how the little girl answered that question with a complete sentence, adorable 😍
I lived in Alabama for 2-3 years, then I moved to Minnesota, and went to school, and these kids would say these stereotypes about Alabama, and the teachers are doing nothing about it. Like I know it’s like a freedom to express option, but i’m In the safe room as these kids. And I’m going to snap. Not so fun fact: the most common stereotype I hear, is the one about marrying your cousins. And I sitting here like: do you want to incinerated. Sorry just had to blow of some steam about this.
I never heard that cousins marry a lot in Alabama. Although, I had some handsome cousins and I said why do they have to be my cousins. Lol But I never dated or married a cousin.

@@paigecat9104 For me being a brit, most Americans sound the same to me… I think it’s due to the variety of British accents because they all sound completely different from each other whilst American accents mostly sound the same. The southern American accent pronounces the letter “r” differently than the other parts of America but that’s the only difference I hear lol
Well I met people from England and my people came from there and live in the south. I said what happened to our English accent. They said I think we lost ours instead of you. Well that makes our world interesting.

That is TRUE. However, I grew up an Army Brat and lived all over the USA. I can say without a doubt that racism is MUCH worse up North than any other place I've lived. Take care and God Bless.
Alabama has good shape, like a rectangle, highways I used were good, small population, has lots of potential for growth and good things, I'm in TX, traffic and border problems are a nightmare, we are running out of water too, too crowded here
It seems to always be implied that only one race can be racist. Anyone from any race can be racist. That being said, the nicest people from anywhere I've lived are in the South. As a whole, most people are very friendly.
On accents, everyone has an accent. I used to think I had no or very little of an accent, but I have become a lot more aware of my accent, and it is Southern! Maybe my Southern accent has become more pronounced over time, or maybe I've become more aware of it. My accent does seem to change in intensity depending on who I'm talking to or what I'm talking about. Anyway, it depends on where in Alabama you live and how old you are. The younger Alabamians might have less prominant or different accents, but that really depends as I know Gen. Zers with noticable Southern accents. I have family with strong country accents that I have not seen ever replicated on tv and I have seen some Southern accents that might sound similar to those on Kendrick Brothers movies, but not so much in the movies with people using fake Southern accents. Those accents are usually from other parts of the South or from generations long passed that have either died out or only have a few representatives (like Kay Ivey for example).
I was born in Alabama but my father's family is from California and both of my maternal aunts live in Florida, And my mother is an English teacher. You wanna talk about a strange accent you should hear me I don't think most people can place me and I've lived in Alabama my whole life and as soon as I opened my mouth people ask me where I am from. I have to look at their stupified faces when I tell them" here" I've literally had people sit there and argue with me that I can't possibly be from Alabama. Also in school I was made fun of for talking funny. Fast forward to college I left the south and went out west, now I get 1/2 people asking if I'm local and the other half positively ID me as a southerner 😆 Life is strange, so is the English language.
On people going to Walmart, a lot of people go to Walmart, but there are also people who are dead set against Walmart for some reason or another, and it isn't usually political. Some don't go because they don't like businesses that seem to kill competition, but many of the same people like to go to Target like Target is somehow not guilty of the same stuff. Target is just basically the more expensive, more liberal Walmart (or Kmart; they look like a Kmart knockoff).
As one of those people from the north; when the accent question was asked and everyone with a thick southern said “I don’t have a thick accent” they said that I my tea got sweater!
I was born and raised in AL. If you say you don’t have a thick accent, most often times it’s because you can’t hear it. I’ve lived in Atlanta for 20 years and I can still hear it. I was told by people when I went back home to LA (Lower Alabama) that I sounded “too northern” and needed to come back south. As for the state being racist, many people have grown out of the hatred but many have not. If you look at the system, I would say yes. You only have to take a ride into the Black Belt counties to see that’s true. The people there are descendants of hard working people who had to deal with tons of crap in the past, and sadly, today as well. I miss Alabama…the forests, rivers, lakes, and other natural things that make the state home.
I grew up in Texas but I have lived in Alabama for 7 years and I noticed a big change in racism. I do believe there are a ton of racists in Alabama compared to where I grew up on Texas.
Lived in Alabama my whole life. I visit the New England area quite a bit though and have a lot of family in New York and Vermont. At times people will recognize I have a southern accent. At others they would ask why I don’t have an accent. Alabama racist? Yeah but is it more than other states? Not sure. I was convinced all that racism was in the past until I joined local Facebook groups. But again is it worse than up north? Not sure. I never go to Walmart. I know a lot of people who refuse to shop there. But we have plenty of alternatives. There’s a big “buy local” or “support mom and pops” around here. In small towns Walmart took over and people don’t have much choice. I know just as many anti-gun people as people who own guns. It doesn’t get cold to me until below 50 degrees. And then it’s just a nip. Hate to say I know a couple of people who married a daughter-in-law or step daughter. But heck, celebrities do that crap these days. Religion does have a much greater hold here. But still it’s higher in rural areas than urban. I live in a democratic county. So I see a big mix of political ideologies. College football is a menace to this state. People look at me weird when I tell them I don’t have a team. I could not care less. Yeah Alabama fans can be “the worst”. There is a difference in manners and hospitality here than in northern states. Jill needs to get some edumacation. 😂
Southerner here, living in the NE area for over a decade. I grew up in Texas and I've lived all over this beautiful country of ours. The only time I ever heard anyone have a racist attitude was in the NE. They thought that because I was from Texas, they could get away with their being ugly. It's not an unusual attitude in the North for New Englanders to think they can be openly racist with me. It's the main reason that I despise living up here. They virtue signal; but they're such disgusting hypocrites, that they are rotten to their cores. Not one of them ever made the mistake of doing that again around me. It's disgusting that teachers indoctrinate students into believing this utter garbage, that a whole people were and are racists. It was Democrats who held slaves. They, Democrats, were both blacks and whites-and, the owned both black and white slaves. It was the North who funded the slave trade in conjunction with Southerners. Africans rounded up other tribes and sold them.
Want to know what Southern racism is? We all get along and all respect one another. We know our places and mix when appropriate. Call it what you will but in all honesty we could give a shit less what the rest of the country thinks.
@UCAhWqLRpomHBlDgcoOEBjpw not fancy , I just like publix and great customer service. I use to go to Walmart but it's always drama there and it's better to support local grocers and local period . Publix knows quality , walmart doesn't know how to create fresh deli items . Also I don't have prove to anyone at publix that I just bought my food . Plus the bag boy or girl offers to push my cart and load it into my trunk.
I would like to make a statement about the cousin question just because it is like the most stereotypical thing and it's also very insulting. Historically there is a very real reason why that law is in place but the law is for like it's illegal to marry anyone closer to you than a 5th cousin, This law was put into place earlier in our state constitution that before the days were cars were really used for everyone pre great depression because when you live in a small town there were people who literally never left that smalltown their entire lives so eventually everybodys blood line just got mixed. In a modern day society though this question and this scenario Is pretty much unheard of.

I went to UA as an out of state student from 2009-13 . I noticed that among my fellow millennials, the accent was primarily found in rural areas. Most of the people who grew up in the larger metros such as Huntsville and Birmingham had little to no accent. Older folks generally had a heavier accent regardless of whether they were urban or rural.

As a Asian truck driver I meet guys from and drive out of Alabama, they were always nice to me. I’m from California and there’s racist there so why would I expect any different from any other states?
On conservativism, Alabama is one of the most conservative states, but is seems like Mississippi might be more conservative in ways and Florida in other ways. It does seem like the younger you are, the more liberal you are, and many people seem to get more conservative as they get older, but I have seen it happen the opposite way as well (not as frequently).
I have lived All Over the United States, grew up In San Diego California and found Alabama 17 years ago. Personally the most comfortable State I have ever lived in. And Yes lived in Northern Al abama, and presently in Southern Alabama and find it to be one of the nicest places I have lived. Easy to get along with just about everyone and there seems to be a Lot of Continuity throughout this State. Folks are very Genuine for the most part and have Good Values! On the racism angle, I see more of it from the older generation, and it is mostly about dating and intermarrying. Most have no qualms with making friends with people of other ethnicities or nationalities. There are some who are more full-blown racists, but not near as many.
Idk I feel like Alabama is the least racist place I grew up in montgomery. And Clanton I have seen both sides of Alabama. It’s the best state for a reason
The claim we marry our cousins isn't completely made up, I know of some of this happening in generations long passed (like my great great grandparents in one branch who were half-second cousins through the same great grandfather but different great grandmothers), but today it is not acceptable, even illegal. I have been meaning to check if this was a more common thing everywhere (not just the South) more than 100 years ago or if it was a more Southern thing. I'm more likely to expect the former.
just here to say: you're gonna find racist people everywhere. You're also gonna find really sweet and kind people everywhere. That's just how it is

When I came to pick my husband up finally, the white man said that the few hours he spent talking and drinking with my husband was the best time he'd had in a long time. And that he was now considered a brother to him... I love it here.
Only racist I've met here are black.

Thanks for this. My husband and I are considering moving. I'm a little leary because, well, you know the stereotypes of the south lol. I'm used to the Midwest, but I have no experience with the south and their "ways." Of course I am originally from Missouri so..🤔

Hi
I am latino and love it here. My channel is growing. These people take good care of me and i am in elmore county.. really rural. ❤️ for every racist in alabama there is a interracial couple . I love the people here.
My daughter told me the same thing. She wants me to move there. She doesn't want me to end up in another nursing home. Luckily my stay was a short one.
After experiencing a few months there, I know that I am blessed to have a daughter who cares.
Yes lot of Latino people in Jefferson County to most of y’all nice people
i’m in autauga county✌️
@@mrkrabs9478 I go there often! To publix and bass pro
So good to hear because I am moving there in 6 months and the only thing I am worried about is the racism I keep hearing about.
I lived in Daphne,AL.I only have good memories.I didn't know about racism while living in AL but i met so many racist people when i moved to Chicago
Why was that little girl so quick at 6:18 to say “NO!” 😂😂😂😂
The “thick accent” thing also depends on what part of Bama you’re from. NO!
Keep the people that think we marry are cousins out of the State we don’t won’t them here anyway 😂
I'm from Alabama. I love everybody.
Yeah but 'that way'
Including your family?
people related to you included
Me too! People can be great! Living in NY now though I can say different! People up here are too damn uptight! Always running for something! But from growing up in Alabama I most definitely am hospitable! I make people feel all warm & cosey when they come to my house!
Im from Alabama and I do not!
Im from ohio lived in bama for a year more races up there then here
Same for me, born and raised in Ohio, been in Alabama since 1985. Racism is less common here but it does exist and goes both ways.

Mine is particularly strong, according to her. lol
Neat video, thanks for sharing!
Halfway through and I noticed that cute little girl is holding a chicken. I mean come on, you gotta love Alabama! Also the comment about Birmingham and Huntsville having other places to shop was good. But people still go to Walmart.
😂😂 so it wasn’t just me. I didn’t realize that was a live chicken until around the 7:50 mark
That woman in front of Wal-Mart doesn't sound like she was born in Alabama. Love how the little girl answered that question with a complete sentence, adorable 😍
It literally doesn't matter where on Earth you were born or raised..... you HAVE an accent.
Well I’m from Birmingham we get anywhere from 10-110 degrees so really below say 50 is when you get the jacket but it also depends on how windy it is
I lived in Alabama for 2-3 years, then I moved to Minnesota, and went to school, and these kids would say these stereotypes about Alabama, and the teachers are doing nothing about it.
People who talked to you like you said shows how ignorant they are about their own country.
People like this just show how ignorant they are. Pretend it does not bother you and hold your head high.

For me being a brit, most Americans sound the same to me… I think it’s due to the variety of British accents because they all sound completely different from each other whilst American accents mostly sound the same. The southern American accent pronounces the letter “r” differently than the other parts of America but that’s the only difference I hear lol
Well I met people from England and my people came from there and live in the south. I said what happened to our English accent. They said I think we lost ours instead of you. Well that makes our world interesting.

Im born and raised in Alabama, I think there's a good comaradarie between races here especially black and white. I personally don't know any racist in fact if you watch the news it seems most racial problems are in northern states, I don't see how you can not like people cause of their color it's ridiculous, there's people I've come across that I don't like but it's a individual bases white and black not cause of their race
In my experience living in the south both black and white folks live in a more relaxed harmony than many uncomfortable people in the north.

All areas in the world have an accent in comparison to all other areas. When one moves from one area to another, the first thing that happens is the brain starts subtly to change the way one talks. It’s a survival adaptation.

Fast forward to college I left the south and went out west, now I get 1/2 people asking if I'm local and the other half positively ID me as a southerner 😆
Life is strange, so is the English language.
Interviewer: People marry their cousins in Alabama?
Old lady: Oh nooooo only if we could Bwahahahaha
😳
Ok but how bout the couple that said they are third cousins?? Am I the only one who caught that? 😳
As one of those people from the north; when the accent question was asked and everyone with a thick southern said “I don’t have a thick accent” they said that I my tea got sweater!
Great 👍 video, Thank you!
I lived in Auburn Alabama, I know it isn't like a farmland yee haw type of place but everyone was great there
I grew up in Texas but I have lived in Alabama for 7 years and I noticed a big change in racism.

From a genetic preserve, 3rd cousins is absolutely fine. Most marriages in the world are 3rd or 4th cousins.

On the racism angle, I see more of it from the older generation, and it is mostly about dating and intermarrying. Most have no qualms with making friends with people of other ethnicities or nationalities. There are some who are more full-blown racists, but not near as many.

I have lived in Wisconsin Colorado Ohio and Alabama. They all have good and bad people, Alabama as a whole the people are friendlier and more helpful.
