    A friend of mine of Navajo descent told me that her family does believe dinosaur fossils have spirit (just as any other part of nature) and that disturbing their skeletons to put into museums without proper rituals of respect will cause unrest to the spirit. While I don't personally believe in ghosts I do prefer beliefs where it is all or nothing, either all life has a soul, or no life has a soul, nothing unique enough in our bodies to make ourselves better than the rest of nature.

    I'll always remember one time I was teaching English to a Japanese woman and we were talking about ghosts, and she believed in them. I said the same as Izzard, that there should be millions of years' worth of ghosts, caveman ghosts, etc. She immediately agreed with me and abandoned her belief in ghosts! I then told her my wife's theory that people die, spend some time as a ghost, and then finally go on to heaven or wherever. She again agreed and said she now believed in ghosts again. This was in the space of a couple of minutes...

      People who believe in ghosts tend to be very open-minded, I think. Great creative thinkers, spiritual, high empathy levels, but, also quite susceptible to changing perspective very quickly. When I was like 6 or 7 years old I grew up in a house and I am not lying when I say that my neighbours had commented to my Mum and Dad that they "Heard the baby crying" and my Mum and Dad responded with "We don't have a baby!" and they were convinced they heard a baby. On the same note in the same house I remember one night very vividly waking up and needing to go to the loo but something scared me and I didn't go, then I saw a hand, it was a bony hand with gold bracelets beckoning me towards it. I never went and I have sworn I saw it, I have never forgotten it, I will never ever forget that moment in my entire life. Not a single moment of that night has ever left my mind and I am now 33 years old and I still to this day hold that this happened. I was the subject of an otherworldly encounter.

      That's speciesism. Level of intelligence doesn't make one animal more special than another. It's a trait you have, no different to running fast or jumping high. Evolution has no will. It's not trying to make other animals more human-like. Humans aren't some end-goal of evolution. Snakes aren't less evolved than humans because they have no limbs. It's not a disadvantage for snakes to have no limbs, it's an advantage for them, that's why they specifically evolved to be like that. Evolution isn't like climbing the rungs of a ladder, going from one species and class to the next in a set pattern. You evolve relative to your needs in order to reproduce. All life is equally evolved.
      "A slug is as evolved as us. A slug got it right." - Ricky Gervais
      Higher intelligence doesn't make you inherently better at all, and saying that totally disregards how stupid and evil humans are. It's nonsensical. That's anthropocentrism. You're projecting human traits and desires onto other life. You can't do that. They're not human, they're not supposed to have human-level intelligence. That's not something they desire or are working on. Humans aren't some standard-bearer for life, to which all other living things are compared. If an alien species arrives that is more intelligent than we are, those who your intelligence as the decider of value would move the goalposts for what it means to be more special. They say it not because it's true, but because it currently benefits them.

    • @Ranger1812
      @Ranger1812 2 года назад +5

      @@zwenkwiel816 It's not a case of "humans and animals". There's no distinction. Humans are animals. Humans are nature. Having human-level intelligence doesn't somehow stop you being an animal. That makes no sense whatsoever. It's specifically because you're an animal that you can have human-level intelligence. It is a trait of animals because an animal has it: humans.
      Everything humans do is by definition animalistic, because humans are animals. And being an animal isn't an insult. It's awesome, and it's what lets you be you.
      "Animal abuse" and "animal rights" include humans. Humans aren’t oh so special that they get their own distinction, whilst every other animal gets lumped in together. Humans are animals, and other animals should be treated with the same kindness, respect, and love that humans should be.
      Souls didn't evolve. They're not a genetic trait.

    Ghosts are presumably understood to be souls of the dead. If you're accepting the existence of ghosts for argument sake, why would you just assume that the ghost believer you're arguing against also believes that cows have souls. I don't think that's likely, let alone a given. Surely the ghost believer would just say that there's no cow ghosts because cows don't have the requisite souls to become ghosts.

Whereas over here we have buildings that are 100, 200, 300+ years old, therefore if ghosts actually did exist there would be centuries worth of them in our homes 🤣 And the house prices would never go down because of it! 😁
