Inheritance is a Muslim personal law matter. Congress has stated in its manifesto that it will not touch Personal law (of Muslims). So, let’s be very clear - under Congress, any inheritance tax will be on Hindus and Christian’s Sikhs Jains Parsis etc
Not only hindus but also all the other religious minorities.

Inheritance tax has a lot of loopholes where the rich create trusts and transfer wealth through it so they end up paying just a fraction of it as tax not that much as SP said. However, poor people always end up paying inheritance tax as they don't have enough cash to set up trusts. One of my friends bought a house, here in Canada, and he told me the reason for the sale was that the children had no money to pay inheritance tax. When do you hear such things from the super-rich?

Thank you Kushal and Tushar for this excellent podcast. I agree that Inheritance tax is a ghastly idea that was abolished in 1985. I shall vote BJP because I don't want the Marxist-Leninists taking control of my country. The Congress manifesto certainly points in that direction.
Forget what Priyanka Gandhi says about forgiving. What about the police and other people who died along with Rajiv GAndhi? What about the injured and the injury they need to carry throughout their life? Will they pardon or their family pardon?
At many times I have raised this issue but no response. First PGV SG and RG should compensate those who were killed or maimed slog with RG (sr) when they are talking on pardon.

Congress is just nostalgic for pre-liberalisation India. Btw wealth redistribution isn't new concept in India Rahuls forefather tried it. Nehru's taxation policies were almost an example of Wealth redistribution but we all know how that went a flop. Indira tried it too but it was a flop. Wealth redistribution have never worked in India and it won't. Rahul is just trying to repeat his ancestors mistake all over again. Wealth tax & Inheritance tax existed in pre liberalisation India.
Imagine he is talking about monopolizing wealth and then giving US as example where the biggest centralization of wealth exists. Inheritance tax only effects the middle class . Upper class already has ways to escape this very easily.
So that means some laws needs to be there to control wealth concentration by the rich.

During partition, despite being a majority, Hindus didn't go out to vote, but Muslims despite being a minority went out to vote in large numbers. The result was that we lost Sialkot to Pakistan and the entire Hindu population of 2.31lac was wiped out and now there are not even 500 Hindus left in Sialkot.

Their own existence did not matter then how does just money matter to Hindus. Sometimes as a Hindu living outside, I feel like we get what we deserve. The absolute apathy that I saw in my home town of Bengaluru elections a few days ago was sad to say because I have no other words for it. To top it off, someone like me who was excited to come vote(most probably for the last time in India) found out I can’t because my parents moved and they couldn’t get my address updated so no voting for me 🤦🏽♀️

Karnataka government has included all |\/|us|ims in the OBC category. If Congress comes to power this arrangement will extend to other states as well. So even when Congress says they want to help OBC, it is simply a cover up to help a very specific community.

Congress created two countries on religious basis give 13 lakh kilometres 50 billion dollars to Pakistan and 30 lakh kilometres to Bharat for Hindus. Another common tax loophole in the USA is to downsize your property. As inheritance tax only comes into effect at the time of someone's death, considering assets that have been given away in the seven years prior to death, it can be a good idea to downsize to a smaller property.
All I am seeing in that comments section is that you all are disagreeing on the implementation but the not on the question of whether wealth distribution is even justified. The normative justifications are just assumed to be known to be good. Nobody needs to question it. Any such policy is anti-prosperity.

The worst case scenario for inheritance tax is that a man bought a 2 bedroom flat for 35 lakhs when he was in his late 20s. Now 50 years later the home is worth 10 crore. He along with his wife and married son live in that home. Now he dies. Do you think his family has 5.5 crore in cash to pay the inheritance tax? No way. So they are forced to sell the home and buy one that is worth 4.5 crore. This home is in the name of wife and son. 5 years later the wife passes away. By this time the home bought for 4.5 crore is worth 6 crore. So they sell again and now move to a home worth 2.75 crore. This home is much smaller and much farther away than the original home.
The security that the father tried to provide his family with 40 years of hardwork is totally destroyed.
Even though congress claims that inheritance tax is not something they intend to implement, Rahul continues to say ‘meri shaadi 50% hai, mujhe 50% dhan chahiye’. In absence of inheritance tax, how will they achieve this?

Anyone who has made decent money in their lifetime knows that it comes with a lot of delayed gratification. It comes with disciplined expenditure, aggressive saving, investing and the patience of waiting it out for compounding to do its magic.
All that denying yourself and waiting it out goes down the drain when the government comes and takes away half of it.
Remember 20% of it on average you would have already paid in the form of taxes.
