My brother and I went through Virginia many years ago (before everyone had cellphones) towing a truck I bought in PA. We had a blowout on the i-haul trailer and we’re on the side of the road, when a highway patrol officer pulled up. He talked to us for a few minutes. Noticed the radar detector and told us we weren’t supposed to have it. That was that. He took my brother to the next exit to call u-haul for a tire repair. We were there for almost 5 hours. That cop hung around, telling us stories. bullshitted with us even after he was off duty. My brother and he became friends and would often call each other. We live 3 states away. Coolest cop ever!!!
If they were really concerned with slowing traffic, instead of worrying about the detectors, make them legal and then periodically post a radar emitter on the interstate so when the signal was picked up people would slow down, but the whole point is generating revenue and not public safety.
@Nobody Else'll Say It If they really cared they would just require every car to have a speed limiter or governor, the way they require cars to have an OBD II or III system installed. That will never happen because they make far too much money from citations.
@@colemanelectric - It has NOTHING to do with safety! And everything to do with stealing from drivers. If speed was really a safety concern, the government would mandate speed limiters on ALL vehicles.
Former law enforcement and yeah, I never wasted one second looking for a radar detector. There were plenty of other things to do, like find actual threats to safety and life. 🙄
It's unbelievable they would waste money on radar detector detectors. But that's Virginia. They have so many state troopers it is hard to believe. I often wondered if they have like some kind of draft system where everyone in the state has to be a trooper for a period of time.
Bill1USMC, Thank you very much. It has been proven in court to be a corrupt law to start with because a detector (at least originally) operated in a public frequency range typically that you garage door opener operates within. I have family heritage in Virginia going back to the 1670s but don’t live there, and it has always chaffed my ass to have to turn off my detector when I was in state, because it simply makes you susceptible to being out of your speed in an area that you have never driven, and you can be doing 55 on a mountain road and come around a curve into a town that changes speeds so quickly that you have to brake to get back to the limit rather then just releasing the accelerator on a road that you have good visibility and distance with no pedestrian issues on. Anyway thanks for your service in both capacities! The old professor Live free or die! Death ☠️ to all tyrants, all tyrants foreign and domestic!!!!!! Nice job bro. My buddy had a Pete. He mounted bilge pumps inside the frame and plumbed them to the tanks. We were at Boston Market running on fumes. Sitting next to a Conrail locomotive. We topped off that time, LoL 😂
Nothing wrong with monitoring the police. People have binoculars in their vehicles for the same reason. Who watches the watchers? They work off your dime.
I find it amusing that radar detectors are illegal. to the point they have to make a detector detector. Now someone from Virginia needs to invent the detector detector detector to detect the detector detectors so they can turn off their detector when it detects the detector detector. ;-)
The detector detector works based on how a radio receiver resonates, which generates (radiates) a spurious transmission a little above the frequency it is on. The radar detector is a radio receiver on the radar frequency and it radiates this spurious transmission, which is what the detector detector picks up. You could theoretically create a detector detector detector, but you can actually just build better shielding for your detector and defeat the detector detector by preventing your detector from radiating anything detectable by the detector detector. Not that that is confusing or anything haha
I find it amusing that all those radar things that the cops use and all of those radar detectors and detector detectors and so on are made by the same company.
The reason for the detector is that the speed limits are set artificially too low so they can become revenue generating devices for the state, police etc. Set the limits properly and the public does not have to resort to having detectors
Speed limits set too low in who's opinion??? The one who thinks he should be allowed to drive as fast as the vehicle can go, or the old couple who thinks nobody should be allowed to drive faster than the normal Summer breeze can blow a leaf??? Remember... You can't take a "30 mph" curve too fast... I'll leave it up to YOU to decide if I mean that if you take the curve much faster than 30 mph you'll probably crash, or if I mean that even though DOT says the maximum speed in the curve is 30 mph, you can actually safely make the curve traveling at up to 80+ mph. If you enter the curve faster than posted and crash... I'll be happy to nominate you for a "Darwin Awards Recipient."
rcmodelr. Speed limits are seldem right outside of the city. Theres a huge number of factors that go into save speed. Like weather type of car condition of car healty and age of driver experience of driver and so on. Who is to say I should go to jail because I broke a limit a group of elitest made. That turn may be only 25 mph in the rain in a big rig or it could be 80 on a good day is a sports car
wchadb817 "Speed limits are seldom right outside of the city." According to whom? You? It's YOUR call as to what the proper speed on a public roadway should be? Isn't that just you being elitist? Speed limits are ALWAYS exceeded. If they say it's 20MPH, people drive 30MPH. If they raised it to 100MPH people would drive 110-120MPH. Who are you to determine what safe speeds are, without ANY driver data to extrapolate and analyze to determine the most effective;limit to post?
ozmedia Im saying if I work a 12hour shift drive home on the same road I drove for years to and from work and do 75 in a 55 at 3am I should go to jail? That's crazy and im not trying to set a speed so no that's not me being an elist
wchadb817 If you drive 75 in a 55 zone are you not breaking the law? Pretty black and white there I think. I wouldn't consider it a jailable offense, though not sure what your state laws are regarding repeating such offenses, that's entirely irrelevant though. What I see is that you feel that, at certain times, you should be free to speed at 20 MPH over the posted limit because you are tired after a long work day, are just trying to go home and traffic is minimal. More so, you should be able to use a prohibited device (as the OP did in this video) in an attempt to stop yourself from being caught speeding. Acknowledging the fault in your actions by trying to protect yourself from the consequences. This particular stop obviously wasn't anytime near 3AM but I suppose you are no longer talking about the video that was posted, despite that being the subject of my previous comments. To summarize: You are trying to justify, using a prohibited device to protect yourself from fines while breaking traffic laws? People do this all the time, does that make it clever though? People shoplift all the time and get away with it too. That doesn't make it clever or correct in any way, shape or form though.
20 years ago, I was driving back from Disney world to Pennsylvania. Right as I got through the top of North Carolina around 1 AM, it was a torrential rain. I was in the right lane doing 45 miles an hour with my Flashers on. I was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 miles into Virginia, when a state trooper lit me up. I had a radar detector on my windshield with a stay awake feature. Every 60 seconds it would make a loud alert and I had to push a button to silence it. He walks up to my driver's side glass and tells me to roll the window down. I said I don't think So. 2" is enough. I'm not letting 6 gallons of rainwater come in my driver's window. Why did you stop me. He said "my VG2 has detected a radar detector". I said "I know I wasn't speeding, because my cruise control is set to 45 because I can barely see. He said "I know I didn't Have you for speeding and I appreciate the safe driving. Didn't you see the sign at the border that said radar detectors are illegal? I said "are you freaking kidding me I'm doing the best I can to see 20' in front of me and you want to know if I'm reading signs". He said I understand. give me your license and registration and hand me the detector because I need the serial number. So I did my very best to go as slow as possible looking for my registration and my wallet. If I'm being inconvenienced, hes taking a bath.. He handed me the ticket and I said "you wonder why people hate you?"
What probable cause did they have to search your vehicle... they got a hit, saw no visual indication that you have a radar detector inside your cab, they scanned again and no hits, so the search should have stopped there!
Well... His radar detector triggered a v2 detector... Any device that uses v2 bands are illegal there...so there's that... And it's a commercial vehicle.... The probable cause is right there in the law
Well they're trying to enforce the laws, so that's their job and all.. I know what you mean, though. Thing is they're not all 'assigned' to homicide units lol.. cops have a huge variety of duties. here in CT though, the CT state police have virtually all stopped doing speed traps and even traffic stops it seems.. on highways, of course.
Nah Virginia loves extortion.... trucker is lucky the trooper didn’t “smell weed” Virginia troopers seem to smell a lot of weed at the end of the month...
I’ve seen this video before. Every time it shows up in my suggested I watch it to get a good laugh. I’ve been driving over 40 years. It’s always a good day when you get something bye the cops. A win for the good guys.
These traffic cops pay for themselves unfortunately. They issue enough citations to cover their salary plus some. If everyone who got a ticket regardless of guilt would fight it in court the municipality would lose money on tickets and only issue them in situations where the violation is serious.
The amount of time spent and the dangers created by these types of stops just befuddle me. I'm grateful they are out there, but this kind of seek & destroy just isn't right.
do truck drivers not get protection from searches without warrants? couldnt the trucker have told them to pound sand without a warrant, or sued them afterwards for violating the 4th?
When I drove a truck (semi) and was "asked" if they could search the truck I said no not without a warrant. When the cop said we don't need a warrant I (I can recite every right in the BOR verbatim) calmly informed him that the 4th amendment states otherwise and proceeded to quote it to him. He got into his patrol car and left w/o saying anything else. Hey, I have family who're cops and good friends who're cops, but if I'm to live under the law and they take an oath to the constitution, than I'm gonna adhere to and make them adhere as well.
I DID BASICALLY THE SAME-POSSESSION OF A RADIO SIGNAL RECEIVING DEVICE (RADAR DETECTOR)IS PROTECTED BY THE CONSTITUTION-THE CAN MAKE YOU TURN IT OFF OR CITE YOU FOR USE-WHICH I WOULD FIGHT IN COURT, BUT, THEY CANNOT CONFISCATE IT !! THE TWO JACKA**ES WOULD BETTER SPEND THEIR TIME PROTECTING CITIZENS AND HIGHWAYS THAN THIS B.S. !!
@Chew Chew Train I've been there too...too many times now. Typically the younger non-experienced cops and female cops...both seemingly out to make a point.
Dave Pragel, You dont need a warrant if you have probable cause. You do need a warrant if you can’t get probable cause. Reasonable suspicion is what you were referring to. It all depends upon what is included. An officer can stop and detain you under probable cause if he sees you breaking the law (speeding). However, that probably cause does not extend to searching your vehicle. If, during the stop, he smells marijuana he now has a reasonable suspicion you have a controlled substance but he can only search if you give him permission. Next step is the drug dog. If the dog hits on your car it is ruled probable cause and he can search without warrant.
NORMAN OTT even if 100 percent of the drivers passing by were rapist , murderers , and thief’s hypothetically speaking the cops wouldn’t know it and you can’t pull someone over unless you have something to go on
You cant stop people for no reason. Well that's how it's meant to be. Even if a rapist was driving past, and they pulled them for something like being on a phone etc.. They wouldn't say, "oh btw im a rapist!" The driver would still be free to go on his way raping or murdering. They had probably cause on the truck, so they done what they are meant to. We may not like, or even agree with what they are doing, but non the less they was doing nothing wrong in this video. Unlike in 1000s of other yt videos
I grew up and worked in Va for many years. I believe it is one of only two states where Radar Detectors are illegal and subject to seizure. I knew and worked with a Pennsylvania man who rented a room Monday-Friday and worked as a Mechanic in Loudoun County. A Trooper pulled him over and demanded his Radar Detector. The man said unless you draw that pistol, I'm not giving it to you. The Trooper drew down on him and the man complied. After receiving his ticket, the man drove directly to the local Magistrate's Office and he swore out a Warrant against the Trooper for Armed Robbery. The judge conceded but told him don't ever let me see your face again. This was the only account I ever heard of a person receiving their property back after a State Police seizure. The DMV has a ridiculous point system too and it's a trap, a revolving door that is very difficult to get out of because it is a HUGE source of income for the Commonwealth.
that is very true, don't speed. but that is also so boring lol. luckily i have a slow car now. i see all these fast cars and just feel bad that its like torture for them. police are all over them real quick. i was in the blue ridge mountains of NC and some kid in an orange M3 BMW went by faster than me. wasn't going that fast but he might as well be driving a huge disco ball. i can only imagine how many tickets he got with that car.@Duke Brooks (WGMD)
@Duke Brooks (WGMD) They are not illegal in Connecticut; that law was repealed in 1992. Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, DC, on all military installations, and in all commercial vehicles over 10000 lbs. Radar jammers are illegal in all states per federal law. Laser jammers are illegal in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and DC.
You DO know that this story is not apocryphal (in any way) -- it is just another 'good guy (truck driver) v bad guy (police officer enforcing the law -- a law that many do not care for) story and is total 'horse-hockey', RIGHT? Find something that people feel strongly about or in a 'containing' site (etc.) and put it here. You may not have 'invented' this but you are just repeating and supporting the meme -- this meme, that is totally bogus. It's like the story about (name a highly sought after ball player here) where a woman is in an autograph line and says: 'My son would just DIE to have your autograph, MR. XXXX ('Adding a name' to increase authenticity and the chance that someone is going to 'buy it')!' To wit, Mr. XXXX retorts: 'Well, may he rest in piece!!!' Same principle -- one gets to see the bad guys get 'owned'. There isn't a State Trooper alive that would draw their firearm just because they were given an 'or else' ultimatum for something like this. The local FOP wouldn't even be able to save their jobs if they did that. At the worst, they would arrest the law-breaking' driver -- most definitely they would NOT draw their service weapon. If you think that they would, well that's how one can explain how you bought into that one.
I would have said I must be in that car beside me. Cop says I didn't see one beside you. Well officer I'm 60 long he was 12foot long easy to see why you didn't see him
Not when that job is to harass Society and fine Society/ rob them on the side of the hwy! Every time a cop pulls me over I'll give him my license and registration and then I shut the fuck up he gets no more help from me! None of his business where I'm going or where I'm coming from and if I'm in my 18-wheeler he's looking at my logs I don't help him read my logs!
Yep, thats what ego does to a person. All a cop wants is a win. The adrenalin of control. Purely ego driven. People might overlook that ego isn't just a word, an attitude. It's a real damn thing that is highly destructive..Ego has caused wars, brought down empires and kindoms. All the police training in the world is essentially useless when ego comes into play. The types that mostly become cops have an ego to begin with. Ego is an exact definition that encumbers all of the following, narcissisism, conceit, arrogance, anger issues, ,often bipolar, various multiple personality type disorders, depression independent of bipolar, which highly contributes to suicidal tendencies of cops. Politicians are trying to make it impossible for gun ownership ,and yet these are the types holding guns. And that's said in all seriousness. What does it take for a cop to finally lose their ego,, they kneel on someone's neck for 9 minutes already handcuffed, kill that person and go to prison for life. Now where's your ego.
All that time and energy and manpower spent looking for a radar detector. What a load of shite wasting the citizens time on such trivialities. Damn government.
He wasn't speeding, and truck driving IS a profession. More truck drivers are killed every year than in any profession out there. A store clerk is next on the list.
@ If people weren't pulled over for driving the speed of traffic or slightly over then there'd be no need for a radar detector. Only way to prevent a speeding ticket is to drive slightly under the speed of traffic. And because of that traffic is increased significantly not only because of the average speed on the highway but also because of the lack of passing done in passing lanes in fear of getting a speeding ticket. In that situation speeding to pass quickly and move back to the right lane would prevent more accidents than it causes. But again, many people don't do that in fear of getting a speeding ticket.
And then how the trucker outsmarted them again by showing on RUclips exactly where they messed up and where his radar as hidden and….ohhhhh I ….ya….maybe not so outsmarted….
I am a truck driver too, and I have been harrassed and bullied by local DOT enforcement officers so many times that I am afraid to even take my truck on the road anymore. The sad part is that all of my company's trucks have electronic logs and a "driver improvement monitor" that monitors how I drive, how quickly I accelerate or decelerate, how fast I take turns (by a G meter), and it also has a camera that monitors my lane centering and goes off if I come close to a lane or get within 2 car lengths of another vehicle. To an extent, it can be a good thing because it makes you better as a driver, but it is also alarming because when they malfunction, they can also take your career to the shitter with them. Technology has gone way too far and the companies are following suit. They trust a malfunctioning computer system over the driver. Gone are the days when we could use 2 or even 3 log books. Any way that state legislators can shaft you, best believe they will.
I've been retired now for 12 years, but I watch these videos and shake my head at such baloney …. and they wonder why there is a driver shortage … bunch of dumbasses. Even your own company will shaft you, on top of all the BS we put up with out on the road. So glad I survived and I'm done.
AT&T has that GPS junk “for safety” and the first thing they did in our area was to suspend someone for going home on his lunch hour (on HIS TIME) to use the restroom. When his time was over-run by his dispatch, he notified his supervisor, but his supervisor conveniently “forgot” that tidbit of info. The Union won the grievance back.

This is highway patrol. They don't deal with such matters. When such matters are called in, they are given top priority to police of that jurisdiction. These police enforce traffic laws because believe it or not, they are designed for safety. Someone going 10-15 over may not seem like a big deal but depending on the vehicle 10-15 over at highway speeds means much more damage can happen much faster if an accident were to occur which is why speed limits are enforced.
the truckers don't really drive fast man I never seen a trucker pass me on the hwy they use the radars so they can go faster then 55mph but not stupid fast they always leave a lot of room in front of them and they normally only go over the speed limit when the roads are nice and open with traffic almost none existent.
There was probably someone who actually needed to be stopped for reckless driving or who needed help while they were spending all that time looking for a radar detector.

@@markk917 Oh please you saint. I'm sure that you never speed and obey all the traffic laws. Do some research b4 you speak. You want some scientific studies done by various state and federal DOT I can post the links as I'm sure you can't be bothered to look them up yourself or even read them anyway. @@markk917 Stop with the what ifs.Have you ever speeded? All of us have and most accidents are from distracted driving and just straight up bad drivers on cell phones and drunk drivers.
I don't see what's wrong with having a radar detector. On the other hand, I have been all over the United States and never felt the need for one. A CB Radio, yes. Radar detector, no.
I don’t necessarily agree with the illegality of detectors, but what they really do is encourage you to slow down only when being observed, essentially admitting that you will be speeding when not being monitored.
In a sense, yes. But the point of owning a radar detector is to go as fast you please when no radars are around. I personally have 3. But I don't use them for speeding. I use them to detect cops. I have an anxiety disorder where if I'm near a cop, I start panicking. Despite doing anything wrong. So for me, I have to avoid cops or troopers if I want to drive safely on the road. You don't want to be driving and suddenly get a panic attack.
Meanwhile there have been 4 break-ins, 1 grand theft auto, a bank robbery, numerous domestic violence cases, and probably a whole lot else. Thanks officers! What a great way to spend your time and our money.
@@ArtemkaPannat while I agree with you, expecting every citizen to behave rationally and appropriately all the time would be an act of futility. Both my grandfathers were cops. I have nothing but respect for them. I think they need to be paid more and trained much better.
If I had my guess, the fine for a detector in a truck is probably very sizable. That is what America is now. DOLLARS. Does not matter if it's pulling trucks over, the NRA, or illegal immigration. It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$. Standards have been minimized, profit has become everything. Kinda sad really.

And if you, I, or anyone else elects to break any of those laws, expect to be charged, fined, or otherwise suitably punished for doing so.* *Incidentally, whilst radar detectors are generally LEGAL across the US (except on military bases and for commercial drivers), radar JAMMERS are illegal for anyone to use under federal law. The use of a radar jammers is deemed so serious that it could lead to a felony charge, a hefty fine, and even jail time in the State in which such a device is used. Use of a jammer is deemed as an attempt to evade arrest. Safe driving!*

I've been a commercial driver for 31 years they never cease to amaze me you would think they would make them go to school or something stupid is as stupid does
What's wrong with radar detectors anyways? It makes people go back to speed limit when they pick up radars. Guess they don't want you sniffing out radars so you'll keep going over the speed limit so then cops can get you for money. All about the money, and donuts.
the idea is that you stay at or below the limit even without a detector... I've seen many a car and truck drive up to a radar trap doing 20-30 over the limit, then hit the brakes hard a few meters before they'd get zapped, never mind what's coming up behind them. THAT causes accidents and that's why they're outlawed in many places.
jwenting I agree with you! My husband had bought me one, and after that thing was in there for about four days, I took it out. THE ONLY reason my husband said he got it was because, "it looked cool in the car." WTH? That constant beeping is very nerve wrenching and I could see how it would cause people to brake, in which case DOES cause accidents to happen. If I DO get pulled over for speeding, IT'S BECAUSE I WAS SPEEDING, and I'll take the ticket ANY DAY over an accident. But I HATE radar detectors, and I'm not a cop, I just don't like the constant beeping, and I could care less if it "looks cool"! I'm not TRYING to look cool, which is what I told my husband as I ejected that thing from my car. It's not enough I have to listen to the kids squabbling amongst each other in the back seat, and then HE THOUGHT I was gonna listen to that constant beeping? hahaha.... UH, NO! I just try to go the speed limit or at least stay within 5 mph of it, and well, IF I do get caught, then write me a ticket.
Robin Renee Bednarczyk indeed. I used to speed all the time, almost never driving less than 10-15kmh over the limit and usually closer to 30 (which is the maximum here beyond which you get a court appearance). About 5-6 years ago I decided to stop doing that, drive at or around the limit at all times. Total extra travel time per day? A few minutes at most. And a LOT less stress along the way. Have had 1 speeding ticket since, buggers placed a camera against the back of a sign indicating a temporary reduction in the speed limit and I let off the gas a few seconds too late. Went about 1kmh faster than the cutoff below which they don't ticket for speeding (compensation for imperfections in equipment). Never did get many tickets in the first place as I know pretty much every fixed camera and was constantly, paranoid almost, scanning the side of the road for anything suspicious and hitting the brakes seeing something, anything at all, out of place, but wouldn't you be rather watching traffic than look out for new "bushes", "dumpsters", "broken down cars" parked off the hard shoulder? Not worth it, and with the ever increasing number of laser guns radar detectors are (where still legal) ever more ineffective anyway. And it's so satisfactory to see the nerd rage build in the faces of people tailgating you in BMWs and Mercs because you're not zooming along at 150kmh but rather sticking to the 120kmh limit :)
They make it next to impossible for cops to give speeding tickets to people who own them so a lot of states have banned them. It fucks with PD revenue stream therefore its illegal.
I never had one never needed one. Had a company rig with a governor on it. I did learn something here though. I didn't realize they pulled trucks over because they could detect a device from their cars. I still think it's stupid for a trooper to tie up traffic on the shoulder of the highway putting himself and the trucker in harm's way and causing all the other traffic to have to cram into the left lane. If I made the rules the shoulder would be a breakdown lane with rare exceptions like a fleeing criminal or getting a wreckless driver off the road. It shouldn't be used to issue routine traffic citations or doing dot inspections which I had done to me on the shoulder. That's really irresponsible by law enforcement.
This reminds me so much of the Virginia I grew up in. Gestapo like treatment all for a radar detector in the only state that bans them. A trooper and sargent for backup that totally waste their time for the states backward policies. I now live in North Carolina and feel like I'm going to a foreign country when I go home on visits.
Radar detectors have been banned from commercial vehicles for some time.. a few still run them but the tickets cost as much if not sometimes more than the speeding... besides who wants to waste time with harassment?
@@virginiamyers9492 I fully understand but it's ok in all other states. I lived in Virginia for 62 years and now live in North Carolina. Life is much different here and many more freedoms. Everyone is still up in arms over this video..... Again, both officers were very friendly and professional and I returned the same courtesy. Yea there are subtitles posted on the video that may indicate a radar detector, but I assure you, 3 weeks later(after this was posted)the truck was searched again and no illegal devices were found. If the truck was searched right now, now "switches" or "knobs" are installed on or in the truck. Yea I posted subtitles on a video that may or may not convey what or wasn't inside the truck. Had I posted "there's a dead body under the bunk" what would the comments been? I wasn't speeding or breaking any law the day I was pulled over. They did their investigation and I was sent on my way , with a clean bill. So all these Monday morning lawyers need to relax. It was a win in my book. I have a clean driving record and DAC. I don't run down families in a coke raged fury. This is just a simple video , shot with a go-pro that happened to catch a moment of my day. I voluntarily allowed the police to search my truck. I had nothing to "hide". I do enjoy reading the debates and seeing these very strong views of the police doing their job. Yea , 20 minutes of my life was wasted, so be it. I find it humorous that complete strangers can assess my character over a tongue in cheek video. Life is full of cat and mouse games. I won one, trust me, it's not always this easy. So everyone needs to relax and not get so bent over a video that is vague at best. So have fun defending me or degrading me, either way , I am sitting back laughing! Just watched the video from start to finish. I am usually pro law enforcment, but let's face it...2 VA state troopers spending 10 minutes (20 minutes of manpower time) searching for a radar detector? They each could have been doing something very productive - like writing tickets to people that were weaving on the roads because they were distracted by texting on cell phones. Or, my other favorite, folks that insist on driving a half car length off my back bumper at 50 MPH.
Exactly! They actually put themselves in danger on the side of the road by parking their patrol cars in front of the truck. Nobody coming up behind them can see those cars or lights. They just figure a big truck on the side of the road and don't move over. The one officer thinks he is so cool he is practically out in the right lane as traffic shoots past him. I guess they feel invincible.
@@hhrey1892 the fact that the police invested in equipment to detect another person's radar detector says to me that road safety is not on their agenda, period. they're there to make money and fill a quota set by their boss
RADAR detectors cannot be made illegal, and the Commonwealth prosecutor will "nolle pros" ( not prosecute ) an appeal of a first-level court conviction because they don't want to risk an appeal going to the federal courts who would invalidate Virginia's bogus un-Constitutional law. Also, cops don't know how to write proper code for RADAR detectors, so you can review the law code and perhaps convince a judge that the ticket is meaninglessly and illegally vague and inappropriate, not bearing witness to anything specifically against code. Regardless, this is the US, folks, where radios and radio receivers are Constitutionally protected free speech and cannot be made illegal. .
. Thanks, do you have a reference to a specific legal challenge at SCOTUS to Virginia / DC RADAR prohibitions, [ @@@taplinger ] -- Google searches are all over the place and I can't find a FREE SPEECH case versus Virginia / DC prohibitions against RADAR detectors. I found one that seemed to pivot on whether or not the police had evidence of a power source for an electronic device, of all berserker things to argue -- they guy wanted out of a ticket, but was not challenging the law altogether. I'm wondering if only "get me out of this ticket" arguments have been brought to SCOTUS / SCOVA so far, but "declare this law unconstitutional" have not been brought to SCOTUS / SCOVA yet, on any grounds. Something is behind my experience of Commonwealth Attorney's "nolle pros" any RADAR detector conviction appeals. ( a ) They are happy with the revenue at the first level courts, don't want to waste time at second level courts because it's not worth it to them money wise, or ( b ) they do not want to risk an appeal moving up to declaring the law unconstitutional for any reason ( but in my analysis, on free speech grounds ). Thanks for exploring this with me. __________ PS -- I proudly display my RADAR detector in Virginia and DC, and have explained to cops that I use it to test their veracity, for example, suppose their RADAR gun fails while they are on duty ... do they go back and get another RADAR gun, or do they "fake it" and write tickets anyway? By having a RADAR detector, I can test and witness and testify that their RADAR gun did not ( or did ) emit any RADAR. The cops actually paused and had nothing to say on that one ( too close to home ? ) ... and eventually backed off arguing, and left it at "tell it to a judge". A friend just responds, when told by cops that RADAR detectors are illegal in Virginia, "... yeah, and so is eating your wife ..." ... ( I am in awe of folks who can get away with shit-talking to armed police ! ) .
@@peterblaise Well maybe memory doesn't serve me. I remember years ago that VA law was challenged all the way to SCOTUS but I too cannot find a reference. @@dennisw47150 have you ever driven on the Autobahns? No speed limits and they are the safest highway network in the industrialized world. So tell me again how going 80mph isn't safe?

hojo70 trust me in 20 yrs of driving VA is in the top 3 for giving truckers a hard time.anyone whos been out here knows what states are crooked worse than others..with that said the driver knows he shouldnt have it ..how fast do you need to go in a semi anyway.
This all goes to show you that Speed Limit laws are about revenue and not safety. Unless you are talking about going 90mph or through a school zone to fast. Those could be called safety related. All else is revenue. You are not allowed to have a radar detector because it may reduce our revenue.
No. A reasonable person would know I am generalizing. You are clearly not capable of reason. To be specific so you can understand, getting a ticket for doing 70 in a 60 zone is for revenue gathering not safety. Getting a speeding ticket for doing 100 in a 60 could be called safety. Does this sound reasonable? Oops sorry you would not know.
Any potential safety issue is not detecting a signal, but from BROADCASTING one. Think about it. A pure radar "detector" is undetectable itself, because a device that ONLY detects radar is just a passive reciever. You can, however, detect a broadcast. Often what we think of as a radar detector doesn't ONLY detect the presence of radar signals, but ALSO tries to defeat that radar. To do this, it EMITS a signal (probably some sort of white noise) in the same frequency as the police radar, and is intended to prevent the police radar from locking on and registering a speed. It is the broadcast of a signal that FCC (and CRTC here in Canada) gets upset about.
Godspeed - its mostly for public safety. There are Speed Limit signs posted every mile. Why go faster? When you signed your drivers licence you agreed to obey The Laws.Driving is a priviledge and you forfeited your Rights to get a Privileged licence.I cant see how you are so ignorant of the Laws you signed your name to an agreed to follow.

It is a right of liberty, the enjoyment of which is protected by the guarantees of the federal and state constitutions.” Do you need more court case precedence?
This is NOT about SPEEDING ... obviously, as speeding is never mentioned by the police or the driver ... it's about trying to ban radios in the United States, trying to prosecute people for receiving radio over the free public airwaves.. .
This is actually truer than people realize. Federal law supercedes state law, and by federal law, all citizens have the right to monitor radio activity (of which old school radar is). I lived in Virginia for about 15 years and I had always WISHED I had the money to challenge this law. (NOTE - I don't believe federal law gives you any right to monitor laser... so that's a whole 'nother animal). That all being said, you are better off just getting a CB and listening to the truckers - they always announce where the police are.
[ @@pg5149 ], note, laws don't give rights, not in the US, where we believe that just by being born we have all the rights innate, unalienable. Laws either protect rights, or prohibit government from restricting rights. LASER, like RADAR, or like merely seeing or hearing cop cars and their activities, is just another from of energy arriving over the free public airwaves, the reception and personal repurposing of which cannot be prohibited, just like recording TV on your Sony Betamax and time-shifting for personal use, see: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Corp._of_America_v._Universal_City_Studios,_Inc. 1984 -- ooo, the year of the big brother! Prohibition of RADAR detectors in commercial vehicles is equally un-Constitutional in that Congress shall make no laws prohibiting free speech, and there's nothing to speech about if we can't unreservedly experience anything arriving at us and on us over the free public airwaves. Imagine the US government telling you that you did not experience what the US government just did to you! Russia wins after all? As I wrote, I told the Virginia cop that I have a RADAR detector to protect us both from bad cops who may lie and issue RADAR-based tickets even with a broken RADAR gun or no RADAR gun at all, because I can testify in court that I saw, or "... that I did not see my RADAR detector detect anything, your honor ...", does the cop want bad cops to get away with ruining the police reputation? All I heard in response was dumbfounded silence from the cop who gave me a ticket for the invented non-statutory non-offence of "possession of an illegal radar detector" and took my RADAR detector as supposed evidence of the non-crime ( which was returned to me at the end of the trial, I always carry a spare anyway in the meantime ). When a DC cop discovered I had a RADAR detector it was well into already catching them back in severe safety negligence at not putting up barriers on reversing one-way rush hour street ( I was going the wrong way at the wrong time ), then issuing tickets nonetheless, at which point they issued me a "defective equipment $25" ticket ( no points on my license ) to justify their time, and told me, threateningly, "not to tell the judge about this". If we keep ourselves squeaky-clean, and know our laws well, and treat cops with respect, and speak to cops courtesy, and don't argue as if we could change their mind, but only to share our experience of the situation, once, and then say "thank you, officer", no matter what they do, they tend to at least minimize their destructive presence in our lives, and our lawyers are far better equipped to argue and win, especially outside of court, with the state's prosecuting attorney anyway. Arlington Virginia is berserker, though, their cops yell at people and take aggressive stands in people's faces just because -- I pretend I'm praying in church and just silently wait for them to finish, hand me whatever they are going to hand me, and then go away, and immediately bring it to a lawyer. I've seen lawyers get Virginia cops to unwittingly testify against themselves to nullify their own "no question or doubt, I saw them passing a stopped school bus" ticket, and get the case dismissed -- how impossible is that? We have to know our limits and let cops be cops and let lawyers be lawyers. I don't need a CB radio, I'm happy with a RADAR / LASER detector, which I do not hide, and I've yet to see a cop write an effective ticket that withstands first-level appeal, let alone would be a candidate for ascension to a Constitutional court who could throw out the law. The problem is not just bad law, it also bad cops who don't even know the bad law! It's not about the law ( or safety ) at either end -- not for the lawmakers nor for the cops. It's about the money. Only. .
Yep just like they banned police conversations here😡😡 Now when you buy a police scanner you cant here the state police or sheriffs radio communications.. Its encrypted.. VA laws are crazy!! Yes they can, so long as there is one of the circumstances that allow for warrantless searches. Stop spreading false information. You are the reason people get their asses in more trouble than they have to with the police.
eishiba10 Think again every state has different laws to "Road Usage" and commercial vehicles fall under a different set of those laws, refusal to allow search of a vehicle on "Public" roads or "Federal" roads can result in vehicle being seized and towed at your expense till warrant can be issued .

+John Di'argiano lol awesome, thanks for the info, I always love learning more about how things work.
I find it amusing that all those radar things that the cops use and all of those radar detectors and detector detectors and so on are made by the same company.
It is a bit humorous. It is interesting that some government bodies think they can legislate the reception of a radio wave
Me 2.... They're not illegal in Colorado, although, not much is illegal here except "high capacity magazines" smh....
The radio signal frequencies belong to Americans, not the government
That's crazy and im not trying to set a speed so no that's not me being an elist
wchadb817
If you drive 75 in a 55 zone are you not breaking the law?
To summarize:
You are trying to justify, using a prohibited device to protect yourself from fines while breaking traffic laws?
People do this all the time, does that make it clever though? People shoplift all the time and get away with it too. That doesn't make it clever or correct in any way, shape or form though.

Maybe they should be busting real criminals instead of harassing truck drivers.

These traffic cops pay for themselves unfortunately. They issue enough citations to cover their salary plus some. If everyone who got a ticket regardless of guilt would fight it in court the municipality would lose money on tickets and only issue them in situations where the violation is serious.

do truck drivers not get protection from searches without warrants? couldnt the trucker have told them to pound sand without a warrant, or sued them afterwards for violating the 4th?
When I drove a truck (semi) and was "asked" if they could search the truck I said no not without a warrant. When the cop said we don't need a warrant I (I can recite every right in the BOR verbatim) calmly informed him that the 4th amendment states otherwise and proceeded to quote it to him. He got into his patrol car and left w/o saying anything else.
Hey, I have family who're cops and good friends who're cops, but if I'm to live under the law and they take an oath to the constitution, than I'm gonna adhere to and make them adhere as well.

The whole shebang was so comical! Your captions were hilarious...thanks👍😉

It has to be one of their " Hard On Laws " they focus on.

Meanwhile a bank is getting robbed.

I don't see what's wrong with having a radar detector. On the other hand, I have been all over the United States and never felt the need for one. A CB Radio, yes. Radar detector, no.
Wouldn't a radar detector encourage you to slow down if you detected a radar? Isn't that a good thing?

Robin Renee Bednarczyk
indeed.
You took the words right out of my fingers! Personally, I think radar detectors save lives.
They make it next to impossible for cops to give speeding tickets to people who own them so a lot of states have banned them. It fucks with PD revenue stream therefore its illegal.
Buddy of mine drove from TN into VA to work and had his in the grill of his car too
you gave away the detector location and cops will use this vid to train other officers on where to look for hidden detectors
You took the response right out from under me cause that's exactly what I was going to post
Cops aren't smart enough
The cops have to prove that is a detector and the only way to prove that is to take the truck apart.

Or, my other favorite, folks that insist on driving a half car length off my back bumper at 50 MPH.
to be honest i dont give a shit for the radar detector i was luaghing my ass off the whole time the video was playing =)

It’s maybe some states is illegal such as Mississippi, Virginia & District of Columbia : D.C.
instead of worrying about something thats not important, why dont they catch actual criminals instead of wasting taxpayer's time and money

Regardless, this is the US, folks, where radios and radio receivers are Constitutionally protected free speech and cannot be made illegal.
.
Good legal argument but do your research - SCOTUS upheld Virginia's law..
__________
PS -- I proudly display my RADAR detector in Virginia and DC, and have explained to cops that I use it to test their veracity, for example, suppose their RADAR gun fails while they are on duty ... do they go back and get another RADAR gun, or do they "fake it" and write tickets anyway? By having a RADAR detector, I can test and witness and testify that their RADAR gun did not ( or did ) emit any RADAR. The cops actually paused and had nothing to say on that one ( too close to home ? ) ... and eventually backed off arguing, and left it at "tell it to a judge".
A friend just responds, when told by cops that RADAR detectors are illegal in Virginia, "... yeah, and so is eating your wife ..." ... ( I am in awe of folks who can get away with shit-talking to armed police ! )

@@peterblaise Well maybe memory doesn't serve me. I remember years ago that VA law was challenged all the way to SCOTUS but I too cannot find a reference. Maybe I remember it was challenged to lower federal court and failed. What I see now is no person or group has the resources to bring it to SCOTUS. Too bad. It is unconstitutional on its face. VA government is full of self-righteous self-serving rich white Christian males who are still living in the 19th century. They almost got through a law that said for a woman to obtain an abortion she had to get a big probe inserted in her vagina that would show her a sonogram of the fetus.
More policing for profit disguised as public safety.
Absolutely!!!
I didn't know it was illegal to have a radar detector in VA. That's one of the most idiotic laws I've ever heard of.
Speeding in that state is an immediate mandatory driving course.

So I'm told.
It is only illegal in big trucks that's in all 48 because truck drivers use them to speed .I know your laughing but that is what federal dot says when ask them why are they in cars so they can check there speed

Relentless cop. Can't find it so keeps on searching, detaining and I'll be damned if he ain't giving up. This is what I do not like about Authoritative cops. They think they have the right to harass, under the guise of probable cause, anyone they want to harass for any reason.
Except he had a radar detector. It went off and the officer was doing his job. When a semi is going 80 mph and because he knows there aren't any police around and they slam into your son or daughter how will you feel about what they do then?
the trucker should send them a bill for his down time and if not payed in 30 days seize the cop car

thephranc its illegal to have radar/laser detectors in a cmv in any state ..posted or not.
@@markk917 Have you ever been pulled over for speeding?
Meanwhile no one moving over from the right lane .
I cant believe all this for a radar detector. come on. road pirates.
Should be out looking for dangerous drunks.
Gilbert B driving is not a privilege....Thompson v.Smith, 154 SE 579, 11 American Jurisprudence, Constitutional Law, section 329, page 1135 “The right of the Citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, in the ordinary course of life and business, is a common right which he has under the right to enjoy life and liberty, to acquire and possess property, and to pursue happiness and safety. It includes the right, in so doing, to use the ordinary and usual conveyances of the day, and under the existing modes of travel, includes the right to drive a horse drawn carriage or wagon thereon or to operate an automobile thereon, for the usual and ordinary purpose of life and business.” -
Thompson vs. Smith, supra.; Teche Lines vs. Danforth, Miss., 12 S.2d 784 “… the right of the citizen to drive on a public street with freedom from police interference… is a fundamental constitutional right” -White, 97 Cal.App.3d.141, 158 Cal.Rptr. 562, 566-67 (1979) “citizens have a right to drive upon the public streets of the District of Columbia or any other city absent a constitutionally sound reason for limiting their access.”
Caneisha Mills v. D.C. 2009 “The use of the automobile as a necessary adjunct to the earning of a livelihood in modern life requires us in the interest of realism to conclude that the RIGHT to use an automobile on the public highways partakes of the nature of a liberty within the meaning of the Constitutional guarantees. . .”
Berberian v. Lussier (1958) 139 A2d 869, 872, See also: Schecter v. Killingsworth, 380 P.2d 136, 140; 93 Ariz. 273 (1963). “The right to operate a motor vehicle [an automobile] upon the public streets and highways is not a mere privilege. It is a right of liberty, the enjoyment of which is protected by the guarantees of the federal and state constitutions.”
Do you need more court case precedence?
they cant take your freedom of speech, but they can take your licence = privilege. not a right!
Enforcing the law. Dont break the law and there wont be a problem.
Only.

Without a warrant, they cannot search your vehicle. You gave up your rights.
Yes they can, so long as there is one of the circumstances that allow for warrantless searches. Stop spreading false information. You are the reason people get their asses in more trouble than they have to with the police.
JJ Belac You are incorrect. Under no circumstance can they search your vehicle without a warrant without some concrete evidence first.
eishiba10 Think again every state has different laws to "Road Usage" and commercial vehicles fall under a different set of those laws, refusal to allow search of a vehicle on "Public" roads or "Federal" roads can result in vehicle being seized and towed at your expense till warrant can be issued .
The warrant type your confusing is home and or personal business structures, hence "Private Property", Big difference but hey give it a shot sometime and tell us all how it worked out for you .
