  • It used to be pretty uncommon to have strong parental characters in animated shows for kids, but DTVA has had a lot of really great ones recently!
    In this video, I wanted to talk about Pete and Sharon from The Ghost and Molly McGee, and why they're awesome! Not just as parents, but as fleshed out, interesting characters!

    I always loved how this show just ripped the band-aid off in episode 1 and showed us that everyone in the family knows about Scratch.
    A lot of cartoons, especially in the 90s and 2000s kept this sort of thing secret from the parents, and it usually led the parents to being minor characters used for occasional jokes and that’s it

    In a way, Pete's a bit like Lincoln Loud
    He comes from a big family of siblings, Pete may or may not be the middle child among them (just like Lincoln,) they each have names that are...kind of the same (except one has names that rhyme with "illy" and the other all have names that start with an "L" (except for Rita) and Lincoln is often underestimated by his siblings.
    The only difference HERE is it took up till their adult years for Billy and Jilly to acknowledge how successful Pete is, let alone admit their respect for him. Meanwhile, we've yet to see the Loud Sisters do either example with Lincoln

    The McGee family are just such a wholesome, tight knit family unit where every relationship between any of them is just so heartwarming. Molly and her parents, Darryl and Molly, Pete and Sharon, Darryl and his parents, and even Scratch and the whole family. He’s Molly’s reality check, Darryl’s partner in crime, and has developed a familial bond to help Sharon as her muse or Pete when he’s got a broken arm.
    And as a tangent about Pete’s siblings- speaking from experience as someone who didn’t have the best relationship with his sister, one small step today can lead to a better relationship in the future. In general, I was a very sensitive kid and did NOT like how rowdy my family could get. Nowadays, though, things are good with me and my siblings and parents- I take the jokes in stride, joke back, and we have a good understanding of one another and my boundaries, too. So knowing what it’s like to be in Pete’s shoes, I feel like the relationship there can only improve after Twin Trouble.
    And one last thing- should we… address that Sharon definitely found the Mega City game after she suggested playing it in 100% Molly McGee? Or be concerned? I feel like the only safe place is Libby’s Zombie bunker from Sharon and Mega City.

    I completely agree with the unearned apology at the end of Twin Trouble
    Pete’s trauma is so overlooked 😭
    Like no wonder this man still has confidence issues- some weird apology can’t make up for all the YEARS of bullying
    I have a sorta theory maybe Pete’s distant from his family because his household was such a toxic environment for him and while he didn’t cut them off he did want to have some space. Sharon was probably a breath of fresh air for him-
    The way she was so protective of him when the twins arrive is just adorable 🥺
    And she has every right too like I’d do anything for my man and would basically make a hit list of anyone who hurts him
    Their marriage is just so sweet and wholesome which is just really nice to see since my own parents aren’t as healthy (they’re still great but they have their problems)
    I need an episode of their perspective during A Very Hungry Ghost or a flashback episode on how they met

      I agree, that’s kinda the case for all Mcgees, since they all moved a lot. And Molly almost died like 12 times (i counted) Molly has a stable family but they obv have financial issues, and with moving around alot that’s gunna create phycological effects. Pete had problems w his siblings. Sharon has problems w her mom. And Molly and Darryl have great parents but with financial issues and moving around A TON, they’ve also under gone a lot of stress.

      I agree that the apology with the twins wasn’t enough to make up for years of torment. I am glad that Pete stood up to them and tell them he didn’t like the way they pushed him around, but still. Sharon had every right to be protective of him and not be too fond of the twins coming for a visit. I hope that when the next time the twins appear, they make an effort in repairing their relationship with Pete and actually be nice to him. I also hope that they don’t be a bad influence on Darryl.

    Also, quick comment on Pete's family: I hope that in a potential season 3, we get a sort of follow-up to Twin Troubles - either with Pete's family visiting the McGees or the McGees taking a trip to Boston. It'd be nice to see the twins actually follow through on being better siblings, maybe even becoming allies and extra support/back-up for Pete as he deals with his other not-so-great siblings. Given that we know quite a lot about Sharon's fam, it'd just be nice to get the same for Pete

    I used to look up to my parents back when I was a kid and I have an image of the kind of parent I want to be if I ever become one. Seeing parent characters that are complete people and not just the dumb parent trope is really uplifting. They love their kids they love their spouse, these aren't the kind of parents we saw on TV growing up and I'm happy for that. I don't know how kids today might interact with the cartoons they watch, but I hope those who need it can find refuge on all these great parent characters the same way I did the few good surrogate parent the toons I watched had when I needed it. I'm really struggling to think in any good parent character from my childhood that isn't Iroh and Splinter.

      @SunnylandProds  Год назад +6

      Yeah, I’ve discussed the Andrea issue before. I think Andrea apologizing to Libby could still be a good thing, but I think her helping save Molly and her family absolutely meant the world to Libby. And then her actions at the sleepover where Libby got her first period just cemented their newfound friendship.

    • @sparxstreak02
      @sparxstreak02 Год назад +2

      @@SunnylandProds yeah, I do like seeing characters show their growth & improvements.
      I just hate it when characters have done wrong & you don’t hear them apologise when it’s clearly needed. Characters like Rayla from ‘The Dragon Prince’ are especially aggravating in this case.
      And even with characters who have apologised in the past but without fully understanding one another (such as with the pairing ship of Catra & Adora from SPOP) sometimes another apology is needed once you reach that understanding with each other (which Catradora didn’t get unfortunately).
      And hearing the apology said aloud by a character is gratifying not just for the character but also the audience.

    What if there was an episode where Darryl got into a fight at school, and because of his record of getting in trouble, he gets expelled? Darryl is sent to an alternative school in Boston for troubled kids, and Darryl is sent to live with Pete's twin siblings? They try to help Darryl not go down a bad in life by helping Darryl find a constructive hobby he is truly passionate about

    • @SunnylandProds
      @SunnylandProds  Год назад +2

      I could see them doing a family reunion episode where the McGees go to Boston, but there’s no way in hell Pete and Sharon would separate Molly and Darryl. That would be absolutely devastating for both of them, and sending him to live in Boston would almost certainly make things worse. If he actually did something bad enough to get him expelled, they’d likely opt to have him do virtual school and try to find something else to help him. I could see him getting sent to a summer camp, but Pete and Sharon would never send him to boarding school.

    While I can definitely agree that Molly's parents have good aspects and deeply care and show love/affection to their children, I dont think they're as good parents as they should be. For example, in mommas gotta hustle, Scratch shows Sharon a restaurant that needs hiring but Sharon doesn't listen because she "doesn't WANT to work there". Mind you, the mcgees really needed more money asap! Also, Pete literally got his whole family homeless for choosing to fix the roof himself, instead of paying a hundred dollars for help. Plus Pete always gets himself in danger with his clumsiness, which is prolly why Molly is similar to her dad that way. Pete and Sharon are both very inmature for their age, not always show responsibility for their actions or face consequences. They rarely discipline or ground Molly or Daryll when they make trouble, or if they do, it's not very often. They also put 13 year old Molly, the oldest child, in situations when she has to emotionally care for her entire family and be the diplomat. I'm not villianizing Sharon and Pete, they are very loving caring parents. I just don't think they're very mature or responsible parents.
