This was the first Ys game I played, so I have a soft spot for it. My friend got it on Genesis and as a couple kids we of course called it 'Wize'. So many great memories of afternoons spent playing Ys III! Thanks for the nostalgia rush!
Another great retrospective/review, Xygor! I remember watching the review of the Oath of Felghana, and I was glad to see that Ys III was given so much love in the modern era. I first rented the Super Nintendo version over Easter back in the early to mid-90s, and playing it at my grandparents camp while the adults were visiting in the kitchen. In the early 2000s I found the Sega Genesis version at a resale shop and purchased it, since I remembered playing it years before. I had started playing the bass around the time that I found the Genesis version, and I grew to love the Genesis soundtrack more than the Super Nintendo version. That synth slap bass that plays in the background of most of the songs on the Genesis version just captivated me more. I even attempted to learn how to play some of them, but it's almost like you need to have four arms like Goro from Mortal Kombat to be able to play them since they're so fast! In any case, it is one of my all-time favorite games! I noticed, though, that you didn't mention in the review that the invincibility frames for Adol are non-existent and you can die in about 2 seconds if you walk into the middle of an enemy or boss! This is a truly overlooked game, and an awesome one at that, even with its flaws!
OMG OMG OMG. The best of the series, and one of the best SNES games (imo). The gameplay, the music, the story, (the way you can easily level up); very excited for this video.
This game (on SNES) actually introduced me to the Ys series. I read about it first in one of those "Unauthorized Game Secrets" books of the time, and then rented it in Blockbuster to play it myself. Ended up buying my own copy, which I still have. There are some timeless songs specifically from this game that I still listen to. Thanks for covering this game!
I remember putting an heavy object on the hit button and let the sword attacking continuously at the respawning flies at the beginning of the first dungeon to grind experiences for hours while i was away
I remember seeing Ys Book I for the PC-CD at Toys R Us and falling in love with it, so the moment Ys III came out I rushed to rent it, and loved it even more. Was so happy to get it on sale for only $25, then getting the Genesis version a few years later. Had multiple arguments over the years about how the series name is pronounced - so glad you got it right!!
I never cared much for the SNES version of Ys III back in the day but man how I enjoy Oath in Felghana. I bought Oath in Felghana and Ys I&II Chronicles for PC many years ago and that was my true start with the Ys series.
I've never played the original but the psp remake remains my favorite of the series. Lacrimosa was great but it started going the route of the trails series. Quests. Lots and lots of quests. It's the reason why I never finished monstrum.
1:55 Would you say you can't plow through every area with Ys? Okay, I'll see myself out. Thanks for the heads-up about the remake, I'm gonna check it out!
In the SNES version, use a rubber band on your attack button in the first cave where a bug respawns on the other end of the screen when it is killed. Leave it alone for 5 hours. Congratulations, you actually have a chance to start the game. Also, if you have epilepsy, don't bother fighting against the final boss. The flashing in the background is famous for being the most blatant attempt at distracting the player during a fight ever.
I remember buying Ys III back in the day and it was my only real entry into the franchise until the Steam version of Oath in Felghana, I enjoyed it almost as much as Secret of Evermore, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG, which is very high praise from me.
I was gifted this one holiday season and, while I had yet to play any of the other entrees at the time, I really enjoyed it. I think it was last year that I was made aware of the PS2 remake; it looks like a lot of fun, I may have to put it on my short list.
I know some people consider Ys III a black sheep game (though not as much so as Ys V, that game got huge fan backlash when it was released) but I love the game (and I also love Ys V as well). It's also a game that I've seen a lot of polarized options about not just regarding the gameplay or the quality of the overall game, but even regarding something like the difficulty. I've seen many people, including some popular RPG RUclipsrs, talk about how insanely difficult this game is when I'm someone who thinks the game is incredibly easy for the most part. If you get to level 16 as early as possible an learn that almost every boss in the game can be cheesed just by using the Power Ring and thrusting at them from a certain angle, doing this will take most of them down in a few seconds. The only parts of the game I think are really challenging are the final boss and some parts of the Turbo CD version that include some deceptively tricky platforming. Which console version of the game someone plays might also make a difference in what kind of experience a player has with the game. As someone who has beaten the Turbo CD, SNES, and Genesis versions multiple times each, I think the Genesis version is definitely the best of the three because it plays far more smoothly than the others and the soundtrack sounds excellent on the Genesis soundchip. As for The Oath in Felghana, I think that's one of the best games in the Ys series and it is also one of the most challenging. If there are people complaining about this game being too hard, I could actually understand where they are coming from even though I personally love the challenge. Even easy mode in this game provides enough of a challenge for me to find it engaging and I'm someone who tends to prefer a higher level of difficulty in games than the average player tends to. I really hope it doesn't take too long for the remastered version of it on the Switch to be released in the West, I'm very excited for it.
I like Felghana more than 3 tbh, the arranged music by Yukihiro Jindo adds alot of charm to it. Also, Cynthia my beloved, could literally stay in the shop due to the music being so good.
I loved this game as a kid. I used to call it Wanderers From Y. S. because back in the 90s we didn't have the internet so I never heard anyone say Eeezz lol.
I played through Ys 1 & 2 on the TG-16 CD back in the day and absolutely loved them even with the whole bump to attack mechanic. However, I tried out Ys 3 on the SNES afterwards and just couldn't get into it. I did happen to see the end of the game though as I had rented it and someone wrote a password down that took you right near the end with a fully buffed Adol. I did however, like the music in Ys 3. Maybe I should give it another shot this summer.
Y's OST always had been fantastic. (At least until the 4th one as I have not played 5th and later realeases) From my point of View this is definitely the biggest strenght of the series.
One of my favorite SNES games! I couldn't get into the remake because of the changed perspective. I love top down games but I would have preferred a more faithful take that kept the 2d side scrolling aspect.
I never played the original, but the remake was my first Ys game. It didn't really click with me at the time, but I ended up getting super into 8, then went back through the series. Attempt 2: very good game! Can't decide if I like it or Origin more. (Personally, I feel Origin does gameplay better, while Oath in Felghana does story and progression better. Since the gameplay difference between the 2 isn't massive, all personal preference.) I have now played every Ys game currently in the timeline (meaning skipped Wanderers and the 2 original attempts at Ys 4, but I've played Ys 5). Fantastic series, am super hype for Ys X: Boatventures. I feel a dive in 5 with the fan translation would be an interesting time. Ys 4 would be great, but that is a good deal of time.
@@Xygor I actually had a particularly special time with Ys 8. When I played it, I was getting burnt out on video games. Ys 8, being a relatively simple game with fun gameplay, a fun story, fun characters, and just... Almost more pure, reignited my love of video games. To me, Ys is the franchise that made me remember what I love about gaming, at a point where I almost quit video games entirely. If you are curious, I love that feeling of just exploring these strange settings, seeing what people came up with. I don't need super complex systems, I want to be able to just immerse myself in exploring these worlds. Ys 8 to me felt almost like a glimpse into an alternate world where, in the PS2 era, game companies focused on refining the ideas of that era, instead of focusing on ever expanding budgets and scale and graphics. "What if we just focus on making a good game that fits within the scope of our budget/team size?"
I LOVE Ys III on the Sega Genesis, the music sounds 100x better on the genesis/Megadrive, and there's a awesome Level up cheat that when used can instantly raise Adol's lvls to any EXP lvl you want, even to maximum, so with the excessive xp griding reduced or no longer a problem, the game becomes extremely easy BUT also very very fun. One can use the Level Up cheat to reduce your level if one feels things are a bit too easy.
I remember I got this when it was released on the SNES. Being a huge FF fan I thought this was going to be an epic adventure. I was so disappointed when I beat it in less than a day.
I am doing my 1st time ever playthrough of the main Titels of the Series. Had great fun up till now playing theese games! The Soundtrack of each single game are so good, I have a realy great time grinding ^^ But, I rly dislike the english dubs... I disabled them. Nice Video! Keep it up !

Great game with one of the best soundtracks of its era. I especially recommend the PC Engine/ Turbografx version because it has better sound and presentation than the Snes version and has less grinding. In fact, both the Megadrive version and the PC Engine version are usually considered better than the Snes version. I don't think it's considered the black sheep because of it's change in game play so much as because we here in the West wouldn't see another YS game until YS 6: The Ark of Napishtim on PS2. That didn't really have so much to do with how this one was received so much as a LOT of changes that happened to Falcom. Mostly because of this game as it originally wasn't supposed to be an YS game and that caused a vast majority of the Falcom staff to quit over that decision requiring the company to basically start over. Was a staunch rental for me and also my introduction to the Ys series. Agree about the soundtrack, it was 16 bit pure perfection.
Ys is where I feel in love with games🥰
Great to hear that!
The remake's a beauty. Didn't even know it existed.
I think so too! Really well done one.
