  • After 20 years of flying and with our Cessna 310 still down for new paint, I decided to check Tailwheel endorsement off my to-do list (watch out Trent Palmer). I've flown in a few tailwheel planes but I've never attempted to takeoff or land them. Jared gives me some ground instruction and then we stay in the traffic pattern at Chicago's Aurora Airport (ARR) for my first lesson in a Decathlon. Hope you guys are all dealing with the Coronavirus/COVID-19 as well as possible all things considered!

Sure does Kirk! My first RUclips video was a flight in a P51. What an amazing taildragger. I'm thinking I could land it but not sure it would be reusable after that. :)

This brings back memories of my father and I while he was qualifying for aerobatics.
We spent countless Saturdays renting a Super Decathlon out of Van nuys airport and fly out to Catalina island! Once we we're on the back side of the island is where the trick flying commenced.
We'd do that for an hour then land at Catalina to grab some lunch, then go back to Van Nuys.
I miss those days and I miss my dad.
I'd love to go flying with you sometime as a bucket list item, you're a very good pilot, and your whole family just seems so awesome.
BTW, look up Fred Starhawk on RUclips, I made that memorial video for him! He was also an avid sky diver, when you see my little sisters tandem coach that I super imposed into the video release my dad's ashes, that's jump number 10,000, I have my dad's log book for all of his jumps and most of his flying.
Jim Wallace, my dad's good friend logged my dad's last jump.
    Thanks for these awesome videos.

I got my license in a champ in 64, soloed in 7 hours, moved to Cessna 150 and it was like driving a car. Since then I’ve owned a c-170 and rebuilt a Champ. Enjoyed rebuilding the Champ a lot, flying was fun too.

    This video is Awesome!!
During my PPL flight training for me I kept thinking when is this going to come full circle..
Not knocking ya but as you was a CFI and all the experience you have flown this gave you a little trouble keeping center line. You got better as video went on. Makes me feel that if I’m not dead center I will be fine.. That is why training is so important.
I told my instructor I’m understanding why your teaching me this stuff at first I thought he was crazy, but learned to understand his training habits. Love the video can’t wait for 310 to return with paint!!

Thank you for an amazing experience! I found your channel a few weeks ago and have working my way through all of your videos beginning with your first posting back in 12/2017. To be more explicit, I am watching carefully and learning how to be more precise and intentional as a pilot. "Air speed's alive, heels down, tap the brakes...". My communications with controllers has become more effective, and more. Candidly, I'm "channeling Kevin" now with every flight. Thank you. One request: do a video in which you show us your checklists and how/when you actually have them in-hand for reference in the cockpit. Best always to you and everyone you love!

You did extremely well for the first time in tailwheel. Im a former CFII and Ag pilot and have done several tail wheel endorsements. The only thing I have a slight difference of opinion on is pushing the stick forward on the takeoff roll. Neutral in my opinion works the best. In a heavily loaded plane or a plane like a Cessna 180 on tundra tires there can be a dead spot during the transition where the rudder isn't very effective because it doesn't have enough air across it and the engine torque will pull you hard left even with the rudder to the floor. It's not something you will see in a plane like a Decathlon but in other tailwheel aircraft it can get you in trouble. You seem to have a really good instructor. You'll get hooked on tailwheel flying. Love the videos!

  • @brianmoore5498
    @brianmoore5498 4 года назад

i think that landing with some hop to it really took me back to my j-3 cub instructor, i said pull the stick back right before your instructor did.
a little goes a long way for control inputs in a light taildragger with that big old rudder.
something about a light tail dragger, i dont know what but you can really feel the flying in your body as it almost becomes one with the aircraft.
we used to blow up balloons and toss them out and circle back to pop them with the prop above the 900 ft homemade grass strip.
super fun. thanks for the memories.

OMG Kevin Congrats!!!! I have been flying my whole life as my father was an instructor pilot from 1945-1965 Air force in the heavies, and when he got out we bought a Piper Super Cruiser. Later in life after he was gone, I got my pilots license in a 172, then rebuilt a Champion 7GC airplane for my instructor. He got me my tailwheel rating in that. I always loved warplane video games, and man, the way you can whip that thing around in the air is so amazing. I told my instructor: "All I need on this thing is some machine guns and I would be right at home :)" Great video! Take care sir hope to see more of this.

Long before I started flying ('66) my father had gotten his Private courtesy of the GI Bill. He learned in a J3, of course. Then he didn't fly any more because of economics. Twenty years later, my first flight with a passenger after I passed my Private was with him. He had mentioned at some point that he had fished his license out of a load of laundry and I told him he should think about flying again, as the license never expires.
So, he got a fresh medical, got his certificate replaced (sans Blue Seal, which meant he'd had no instrument familiarization) and joined a club of local educators. They had a Citabria (basically the same airframe you flew today) and he took me for a ride. My first landing was a disaster. I was utterly unprepared, he had to salvage it for me, and I never tried landing it afterward. Haunts me to this day.
And, of course, in those days, there was no logbook endorsement. I don't have a high performance or retract endorsement, either, although I have over 100 hours in C182s, and much of that in a 182RG (plus a Cutlass). The only additional rating on my Commercial license is the Instrument Rating.
I've come to learn, years later, of the maxim: when the mains touch in a tri-gear airplane, you have completed your landing. When the mains touch in a tail dragger, your landing has just begun.

Nice work, Kevin! Even though I'm not a pilot (not a real pilot, but a soon-to-be paramotor pilot, lol), I've watched enough aviation content on RUclips to see you picked this right up. Congrats, man! 👍👍
Now all you need is a Kitfox, but you've got to install that crazy turbocharged 300HP Yamaha snowmobile engine that Steve Henry uses in his STOL dragger. 😁 Imagine how much fun THAT would be! A 5 FOOT takeoff roll would be SWEET, lol. 😎
Glad you're hanging in there in the midst of this class 1 s-show we're all going through. I'm glad to be in a small town out this way - things aren't so great in the cities around here. Glad to be many miles away from them. Anyway, since the wife is now out of work, we're cleaning the house of ridiculous clutter that has built up over 17 years, and I'm brushing up on my country music. Being a "Yankee" I never got much exposure to it, except for my 2 years in Phoenix 20 years ago. When I came home I went back into my old habits. Thanks to this crisis, I've been on RUclips, and the free SiriusXM music (until May) listening to Alabama, Joe Diffie (RIP), Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Jerry Reed, and a whole bunch of other legendary singers. MAN, I had no clue what I was missing. Some GREAT stuff there! Goosebumps and tears from music - never thought it was possible. :) Alabama is my new favorite band. And Dang Me by Roger Miller. Can't believe I've missed all this my entire life!
Anyway I've rambled enough, as usual, lol. You, Jamie and the kids all stay safe out there. Glad to see you here. 👍🍻

Great video! I learnt to fly the other way around, tailwheel (or skid) first. Here in Australia I managed to persuade my local flying club to let me learn on their Tiger Moth, as a tribute to what my Dad did in the RAAF in WW2, then, after solo transitioned to C152, 172, etc.

@@310Pilot Every 4th of July, my dad would rent a Cub or Aeronca and take all the neighbors flying. He would land it in a hayfield on the back of our farm/ranch. Starting when I was 3 years old, I would go with him to pick up the airplane (about an hour drive away) and fly back in his lap. The video of you and Toccoa on the flight to see the grandparents reminds me so much of our flights.

cdr chip: My first airplane was an 11AC, 430 hrs. in 2 years. I flew it at a class D apt. and the tower Chief remembers my slow final approaches! bwahaha I learned a lot with that plane. From there I had a C-140, that I hated, and then got an RV-4 (awesome) Stay healthy.

Kevin, Thank you for the video. I hope you and your family and viewing families are safe and stay well during this difficult time. I recently, before COVID 19, flew a C172 but after flying my C310 and the twins I fly now I said, forget it. I will stay with my twins. Anyway, your flight in the tail dragger brings back memories when I was in college in Arizonna flying an old champ and practiced landing on dirt roads.....no, not smuggling anything. LOL. It was fun but I now prefer the twins. Stay safe and until next time, safe flying.

My instructor had me put the wing straight down the runway on a slip, after that I came in high just so I could slip it in, in a J3 Cub, it doesn't get any better than that! Cheers. Great video.

I did my spin training for my instructor rating back in the mid 90’s in a Decathlon then later did my initial tail wheel endorsement in one so I could start flying warbirds at Warbird Adventures in Mareeba Queensland Australia. It sounds crazy but thinking back on learning to handle that little Decathlon and then putting in some solo circuits was some of the most enjoyable flying I had done. The instructor who did my endorsement was a real old school stick and rudder guy and I remember just in those few hours I was a better handling pilot for the experience. Unfortunately he was later killed flying back a load of crayfish in a C206 from the Torres Straits to Cairns at night when he got himself into some horrendous weather without an instrument rating. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories. Definitely more pilots should take some time to get their tail wheel endorsements, it will be some of the most fun flying they will do👍.

Hey Kevin, my first time in an airplane I was 5 and my uncle was flying. Plane was a cub and He flew B17s out of Thorpeabbot in England. First landing was a side slip and scared the hell out of me. After that I was ok. Looking forward to 1BCs new paint. Keep up the good work, stay safe and healthy.

I was surprised just how different flying a tail wheel plane is on the take off and landings, that could mess you up when you switch back for sure. You did great and thanks for showing us just how it is done Kevin!!! I learned a lot! ;-)

It for sure is a very different feeling and sight picture Dick! I'm lucky in that I have flown a few times with my friend in his Cessnas 340 so I think I'll be able to keep my mind right when I get our 310 back in 2 weeks. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Cool stuff. I was in a similar position to you regarding a tail wheel endorsement.plenty of time in 310s & Chieftains but never a tail dragger. Lesson 1 in a C152 Texas Taildragger, opened the throttle to taxi & whoosh, a terrifying 360 degrees turn, nearly on the spot. Only did that the once, but that was my embarrassing introduction to the tail wheel. Later went on to regularly fly the bosses DeHavilland Tiger Moth & that was a load of fun, especially hand swinging that old wooden prop. 👍✈️😎🇦🇺
