I love this so so very much. Sikhathele ukufunda thina and sit at the “desk” for 8 to 9 years to obtain Ph.Ds at Public Research Institutions just to have people studying at bogus unaccredited institutions or even just hand out Honorary Doctorates. Thank you for this topic.

A PhD is awarded for meaningful contribution to a scientific body. Some contribute in academic terms, by conducting research and sharing that impactful knowledge through publishing a thesis. Others contribute to the scientific body in very practical terms, i.e, having not gone to university but accomplishing great heights of success and reaching new frontiers.
The latter fulfill the expected outcomes of a university curriculum, albeit without having set foot in a university, hence the university honours them with such an accolades. And that is how we have Dr Esther Mahlangu. Her contribution to the 'scientific' body of Art is indisputable.

My understanding was that a person with honorary doctorate can only be called doctor by the institution that presented the award. Not outside that environment since it is not an academic award.

Not your understanding, it is what and how it is. Their doctorates are limiteds to the institutions that offer such. However, it seems that media does not know this condition.

They irritate me to no end, makes me so angry how these uneducated celebrities devalue docrates. They are not doctors should not be addressed as Dr, should not change their title. Do you know that the people they honor pay a fee to be recognized. They approach them 4 the recognition, but to get the honor they need to pay an amount to be awarded.
Anele, also do your research as a team: The doctorate was not in Arts and Culture, but in Business Admin which was also an issue because Sello has no creditials that explain why he should be honoured in that area. Thembi, the people you named and claimed they graduated in the past week with Sello like Winnie etc. did not get honoured by this fake institution last week. This has been doing the rounds 4 long, it was not done in the past week. Those were old photos that people posted to show the history of this fake institution and the same celebrities.
I'm not saying the minister didn't study for his doctorate, but I'm not saying he studied for it either.

In my opinion, and I know many won't agree with me, but honorary directorate degrees should be more significant than academic ones. If you get honored like that by a university, that means that you are the embodiment of what they are trying to teach through their curriculum, and you've had a massive impact in the field, where it matters the most. Former Chief Justice Langa got one, as well as Mogoeng. They had a real impact in the legal fraternity. They wrote ground breaking judgements and they practised law in real time in the real world. They didn't sit on their armchairs and philosophied about the law, they were in the trenches in court and displayed their craft in real time.. to me that is a far better demonstration that you are competent in something than to write a thesis but have never set foot in the field. Who has a better track record between someone who has researched about a topic and someone who has done it practically?
Very correct. A good example is the NWU, a rugby university, honouring Rassie Erasmus with a doctorate for his excellent coaching with the springboks.
@@ompabaletserametse8643 exactly, and there has never been a single PHD graduate in sports science or coaching that has achieved what Rassie has achieved. Which begs the question, who's more competent between PHD doctor and an honorary doctor?

Such a beautiful true take. I’ve never thought of it like that. First time I understand the significance of an honorary doctorate. But they definitely must look into legitimizing the criteria.

I believe contribution shouldn't be based on a monetary/commercial scale, but, rather on both the substance of your influence (as a specialist) in that field; and the height of your creations creations/advancements (professionally and as a field of study). Bill Gates and people like Steve Jobs were such potent creators, we now study, support and work in every I.T. department globally!
