Samsung takes on Apple's 5K Studio Display with the ViewFinity S9 5K Monitor

- At CES 2023, Samsung unveiled the Samsung ViewFinity S9 5K Monitor, a response to Apple’s 5K displays like the Apple Studio Display. These monitors are fantastic options for creatives, not because they watch 5K content but from the extended real estate that allows creatives to simultaneously see more content on screen. This is great for editing an image or video because you can see more of your timeline without making your video preview tiny. It focuses strongly on color accuracy, is essential for creatives, and has a clever calibration method using a Samsung Galaxy phone. The downside is that this is a more proprietary solution than traditional Calman calibration tools. Despite that, it is great that the competition in the 5K monitor market is heating up, so we get better products at better prices!

Is it 120hz? Or only 60hz, like apples display?
Lot of people don't know but Samsung makes the OLED screens for the iPhone.
They're one of the suppliers. Apple uses multiple options, but yeah, that's table stakes for those that keep track of tech

It’s all about software in the end. If the software isn’t made compatible with the hardware, you will just have an unusable piece of metal.
I have the M8 but this…. This does put a smile on my face! Lolz. Colour accuracy was a big issue on its predecessor so it’s nice to see they ‘may’ have addressed it here. Would love to get my hands on this and see for my self

Alogic Clarity is a mac focused monitor that is glossy! 27”, 4k and aluminum chassis!
There is 27 inch 4k 155Hz glossy monitor (LG WR8 panel), but only on taobao and not always in stock.

Samsung used to use glossy screens, but they switched to a Matte finish back it 2019. The glossy finish used to leave fingerprints and and wipe marks all over. Over time the coat turned purple. The Matte finish offers a premium coat and makes it easier to clean/stay clean. Overall the Matte finish is the better option. I speak from experience, since I own both a Matte display and a gloss display.
Just FYI I'm pretty sure this is a plastic chassis...which is the main "feature" of the Apple display that I like (and the good looks).
Has pricing or release date been given?
I wish I could’ve gone with this and saved a grand compared to the Studio Display I bought but it’s aggravating to have to jump through hoops to get any 3rd party screen to wake up at points. For that stupid reason alone I finally bit the bullet and went with Apple. It’s never an issue now. This monitor looks beautiful though
It's screen is matte though I thought reflective screens look better. Matte is good to avoid reflections but doesn't it usually make screens less vibrant?
Depends on what you prefer. Some prefer no reflections and some want glossy for the contrast.
I'd definitely want a glossy display if i am doing professional work. For gaming , matte is fine
Not if you have any sun. Glossy is great if you are using it for your batcave.

the introduction just released yesterday
5K on 28 inch gives 200ppi, scale 125%, super crisp display at 150ppi effective but just super sharp. I am all in.
*But* better give me 10 bit no FRC, VESA, 90Hz minimum.
Oh and 600 actual nits, I want my HDR.

They didn’t have that displayed or in any of their press releases but I imagine 60hz. 120hz isn’t as big of a deal for creatives but it’s nice to have.
@@ThisIsTechToday 60hz is fine like super okay. But I enjoyed programming on the 120hz of 14” MBP, it’s fast to search the line of code that you’re trying to find. It’s like heaven. Haha. I will surely check the Viewfinity s9 in store hoping that is is below $800.

Cool, I'm watching this on my 7 year old smartphone, my monitor is 720p, I'm looking forward to moving into this 1440p tech so I can have double HD quality.

The screen resolution itself is one thing, but will the build quality be up to par with the Studio Display, and will it have the same high quality speakers and brightness level?
I'm fairly certain the monitor's plastic wont dissolve and fall apart on contact.

@@chuck7415 I own a CF791 and it doesn't wobble. The same goes for my Dell 27 inch Ultrasharp. Both have mostly been used on the stands they came with. The only time I experienced wobble was when I used lower quality tables that were not sturdy, but the wobble ceased when I switched to a quality standing desk with a solid wood top.
I love Apple quality as much as you do, but pooing on high end Samsung products like this is just snobby. It looks like a GOOD monitor that is well built and doesn't have any build problems a quality vesa mount couldn't solve if the monitor stand is truly awful.
the screen is fine but I hear everything else (camera, speakers, build quality) is worse. but same price, so kinda pointless.

There are vesa mount adapters for M8 that you can buy on Amazon and ebay. Etsy too.

How 5K can provide extra real estate 🤣 this is still a 16x9 aspect ratio no additional space for a timetable.
Huawei ViewMate 28.2 display are 3x2 aspect ratio with 4K+ resolution you get additional 400 pixels at the bottom of the screen for your timeline.

Samsung must have lost their mind to charge that much, this is a £700 max just for thunderbolt 4, and smart calibration using the phone. Spart from this, awful speaker, and awful build quality.
