I was dressed as the scout from tf2. sometimes I would run up and say "hey chucklehead" and raise my bat I got from baseball. I didn't hit anyone tho it was funny
Tbh, I feel like this special was the reason why many CGI content like Pet Alien, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Hotel Transylvania and Karate Sheep exist. Even that Twisted Whiskers Show. Characters having alot of squash and stretch, as well as exaggerated movements and faces. It definitely was a game changer for CGI.
We love a good old "ugly" animated movie. While I don't have as much nostalgia for the old scuffed models and animation, it's still fun to take a look back at animation history and see how we got to where we are now, the exact same way an individual artist improves: Trial and error, baybyyyyyy!
YESSSS. I was OBSESSED with these films as a kid, even dressed as scary godmother one year(no one knew who i was,the costume wasn't that great tho lol). And I def flipped when I learned there was a sequel. I then remember years later realizing that they were based on books and falling in love with those too. I was just talking to a friend the other day about how impressive the films are for translating the artwork into 3d. 3d in general has come such a long way in being able to visualize 2d art, its so cool.
As a kid, I used to watch this movie a lot, like a lot a lot. Everytime I went with my dad to rent a movie I picked without fail that movie. He got so tired of it and, the funny thing is, I remember nothing from the movie. And that makes my dad super angry because of all the times I made him watch it with me xD
Man, I’m so nostalgic for Scary Godmother. Coming back to it as an adult, I’m particularly impressed with the backgrounds tbh. I’m surprised by how much it holds up
I don't know how exactly this collaboration would work, but if you want to talk about Reboot, you NEED to talk to Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions. Never seen a bigger fan of that show. Never seen it myself in my life but I could probably tell you the entire plot just from listening to her go on tangents about it.
OMG!! You just unlocked a core memory of mine. I do remember watching this film when I was a child, around 4 years old, in the late 2000s on Cartoon Network. I only remember parts of the movies, but this movie has always been in the back of my mind. At the time, I didn't fully understand it, but I did kind of like it. Thank you for making this video it was very informative and entertaining.
for my yearly rewatch i tend to pick a detail and focus on it for the whole run. this year i focused on how nice hannah’s eyes look. i love how they dilated her pupils without making the iris’s smaller too, it keeps her cute big eyes while still showing fear
5:52 money for nothing is that one song that my dad would always have on most the time, I remember watching the music video and thinking about how they animated it that long ago
SCARY GODMOTHER MENTIONED!!!! I actually got the book relatively recently after watching the movie. In english too! Which i'm very proud about bc i live in a spanish-speaking country. It even came with a poster by the original artist!! Love these characters, and this style, i personally love both the movie's style and the book's style ^^
you managed to find yet another spooktalucar piece of animated media to share with us for Halloween! i find myself looking forward to your Halloween uploads each year, now! i just have to see what it's about, and the decorations and costume you've prepared. you never disappoint, it's always so lovely! thanks for the video, and Happy Halloween, Doodley!! 🎃🧡
So happy to see this! I always adored the Scary Godmother movies, very nostalgic. Certainly aged visuals compared to today of course, but still so charming and entertaining with clearly so much love put into them even with a shoe-string-budget. An annual holiday rewatch to this day, for myself and whatever friends I can rope into the experience!
I completely forgot I had seen these films back in the day on Cartoon Network. They weren't the most memorable, but they were absolutely worth watching and this was a great highlight of their place in history. The "stiff" animation has its own character, blended into the unmistakably 2000s aesthetic - even in 2D animation. Keep up these highlights on the obscure and the worth-remembering!
when your channel first launched as a teaching and exploring topics channel i was there and enjoyed it, but at the time i wasn't really in 3d yet and had just started, so i left and came back when i was ready, but now i'm knee deep in learning 3d and exploring it on my own and came back to your channel, thanks so much i love the way you discuss things.
Scary Godmother might be a nostalgia trip for most, but for me it was the mention of Octopus Pie! Reading that was one of the hundreds of webcomics I read during my high school years, first easy access to the internet.
1:54 AHH! That's very spoopy. On a serious note though, it's interesting seeing other animations I've never heard about and seeing such creativity with such limitation. Very inspiring as an amateur animator.
I always loved seeing scary godmother on Cartoon Network, no matter how uncanny some of the scenes can be it was fun not understanding how weird they look and some of the cool backgrounds
I have a tradition where I watch both these films every Halloween with my 30-year old friends. It's always a good time and we come away with a great appreciation for early 3D animation every time.
Man, I grew up watching this every Halloween when i was younger and loving every second of it. This was probably my first exposure to 3D animation besides games, and I had no idea it was based on a book! Looks like I got some reading to do this fall/ winter.
This was one of my child comforts every year growing up. I knew it was cheesy but I would eagerly find out when CN was going to show this so I could make sure I didn't miss it. And when we finally got a DVR, I recorded it every year.
I _loved_ these films as a child and used to watch them every year. I also had no idea they were made by the same studio as Reboot, my roommate's childhood favourite!
Can I just say that starfruit playing at the end of the video always makes my day. It was my most listened to song since the start of 2024 and is now nostalgic at this point (at least for me)
I just saw these the other day, so this is cool to see pop up. Adds a lot of context to the series. I knew about mainframe, but didn't know much about the illustrator.
I haven't done 3d animation, but I have built maps in classic DOOM, and the difference between being building a 3d environment with an abstract 2d interface where the 3d rendering to check your work is a serious interruption in work flow, and modern systems where you can build and see what you are building in real time is just hard to put into words unless you've experienced it yourself.
Me & My Brother watch Scary God Mother at least every Halloween (at least because we’ll definitely forget) & no matter how “cheesy” or “cheap” it is we enjoy it heavily, it’s fun, whimsy, & really funny. It’s just a really good, simple, & short thing to watch during Halloween.
I LOVE scary godmother! I watch them every Halloween, there's just something so fun about these movies and there's so much heart put into them! I think the studio also worked on the classic Barbie movies like princess and the pauper!
dude, for almost 20 years i thought i literally dreamed watching this movie. none of my friends would believe it was real, no one i asked knew what i was talking about. and now qithin 2 weeks of figuring out what this was and confirming i wasn't crazy, i've seen a bunch of videos about it
HUGE nostalgic movies for me, I love watching them every year ❤ It's really cool to learn a little context on older 3D animation for TV, it sounds like it must've been so difficult 😂
Looking at the original illustrations from Jill Thompson makes me swoon. I just cant help but wonder how it would look with modern 3D, especially considering the rise of stylized 3D animation. Also 2 videos in 1 week? Madness!
Good to see Mainframe get the spotlite here, Hot Wheels Acceleracers from 2005 is one of my favorite cartoons of all time. They did a fantastic job despite their low budget. Mainframe seems to really nail things like facial expressions, there's a lot of subtle details in the expressions that do a lot of heavy lifting in conversations between characters. The models are definitely elevated by the facial animations and lighting in Acceleracers.
If we're talking about old 3D animated movies, might I direct you to the original trilogy of Bionicle movies? I watched those movies to death when I was a kid, and going back to them even now, I still think they're great!~ You can find 4K upscales of them on RUclips ~ Highly recommended if you have some time to kill.
I'm a 90s kid so even though I grew up with Reboot the Scary Godmother series was always a bit hideous to me as I discovered and loved Thompson through the gorgeous Beasts of Burden comic with Dorkin. Thanks to your video I can appreciate more what Mainframe was doing.
Mainframe studios is starting to get a bit of a appreciation renaissance here in Vancouver among animation studios so the timing for this video is perfect
Oh god i remember this movie IT WAS MY AND MY SISTERS CHILDHOOD MOVIE we had like this one and 2 other in dvds which we rewatch over and over again I think one of the other ones was about a pterodactyl during christmas or smthing
Ah, Mainframe/Rainmaker. The reason why my Usernames generally have "Guardian" in them, and why I grew up with such a fascination in tech and animation. A good chunk of my favorite shows growing us were made by them. Reboot, Transformers (both of them), and Action Man to name a few off the top of my head. I always found it easy to spot what was made by them, including when this movie came out. Good times. I did not know about the music video, though. I learned something new.
Mainframe studios has animated ALL of the Barbie movies, which I watched all the time as a kid! They weren’t groundbreaking or anything, but I still think the animation of a those Barbie movies during the 2000s holds up pretty well. They made a pretty large part of my childhood there lol
Wait so it was the same studio that was behind Reboot? Okay, I'd really love if you made a video on Reboot, it's one of my favorite shows that I've watched during 2000s and it looked HOT to me back then. I'm almost afraid of re-watching it now, knowing how dated it is, but I'd still love to learn more about the history behind it, especially if there's any to share. Thanks for educational history lesson, Doodley. Love your work.

Mustache on mustache. Truly a costume among costumes!
shockwave???
Always liked how animation can be used to make things especially creepy by tapping into the uncanny valley, even if unintentionally

God, I can practically see OSP Red's silhouette forming in the wall like that one Spongebob ep at the mere mention of Reboot.
Some say if you say Reboot three times in a mirror, she will appear behind you to talk about Season 3 for the next hour.
OSP MENTIONED LET’S GO

The Scary Godmother films are probably one of the few things from my childhood that envoke nostalgia within me.
