Why is it that when I hear stripped back versions of certain songs I suddenly listen more and find deeper meanings of the lyrics? The original version I didn't really pay attention to them, but here I did.

Beth, what this performance tells me is that the only thing standing between you and super-stardom is finding (or writing) a not-yet-released-hit-song that matches your singing style as well as this song does. At some point it becomes a numbers game: you might have to record 20 or 30 original/new songs to find the one song that becomes a hit when you sing it, because that one song needs you as much as you need it.

People keep getting the lyrics wrong, although you are on the right track.
The original lyrics never mention 'Yeah', only the name 'Yah', the short version of God's name, and there is no 'Hey', the lyric is 'Yahweh', the long version of Gods name. She is speaking directly to God by name.
The clue is the songs name: Prayer in C
She is praying to God and so she calls him by name.

It's a pretty bleak song though.
But if you can read the story of Job and understand it enough so that 'Joan Osborne - One of Us?' still brings a tear, then there is hope.
