What a Chad. Declares a public duel with a demon slaying heratic, enters actually entertaining banter with her, backs out honourably when he finds out it's actual love, and even admit he's outmatched not in skill but ofc he can't compete with actual love.

Lord Ortranto stunned me. he seems to be a remarkably decent man with a flair for the dramatic, which is something i can really get behind. He backs out very graciously.

"Risk your life" Josie the inquisitor has been fighting demons and whatnot everyday dueling with some noble can hardly match up with the risk the inquisitor is facing everyday
Before Josie showed up the Inquisitor was losing -badly.
It is very obvious that the Inquisitor is unfamiliar with the Rapier (and why would a Daelish Elf know how to fight with a weapon only used by nobels in duells?) so it is only logical that the Inquisitor is struggling. In fact, it is a testimony to the skill of the Inquisitor that she/he could survive that long against an obviously skilled opponent.
Well of course, it's very logically. Josie is right to be worried. (But if that same cut scene happens when your playing as a human noble that BS they would know how to duel)
Not necessarily, the human noble is from the Marches, where the customs are different.
The inquisitor can be anything, except for a practiced fencer. Otranto might've turned her into swiss cheese if he was furious

Her character is one that prefers diplomacy over violence - when possible. She quit being a bard after she accidentally killed an acquaintance in a scuffle - she wanted you to take the diplomatic option to deal with the assassins attempting to kill her - and in this case she probably wanted you to let her deal with the marriage contract in her own way. Instead you put yourself in a position where, though unlikely, you could die/get hurt, or you could kill/hurt Lord Otranto - all over a matter that probably could have been resolved on her own end with a few letters written and favors called in.
Life can be annoyingly ironic when it comes to to something like this. There many stories of people surviving the worst of situations only to die on something silly. The ww1 soldiers who survived four years of trench warfare only to die of Spanish flu when they got home.
@@mazariamonti Not to mention this is in a duel with weapons that the Inquisitor might not have experience in, with etiquete that they also might not have experience in. There is a real chance something bad could have happened here.

Considering how little everyone seems to think of elves and mages, Otranto's putting a lot of faith in the Inquisitor's sense of fair play.
Well it is a public duel soo if anyone cheat everybody sees it. In a society where reputation is important public display of dishonesty can be damaging.
In real life duels were mostly not held in public but with witness and a judge (most countries started to prohibit duels because noble kept killing eachothers)
I've done every romance there was but this one still has a special place in my heart... It's all so cheesy and adorable

I just don't like her lifting her leg up like that. I get that it's a callback to her old fashioned etiquette training and part of the joke, but it's too over the top for my tastes.

Except, technically Josie was his girlfriend at the time. Which could also be a self-burn, considering she was also the Inquisitor's girlfriend at the time.

Loghain will gladly fight a mage with all their power in a 1v1 duel, but Lord Otranto wimps out.
On another note, technically the Inquisitor did win the duel since most sword duels end when at first blood.
Given that everyone involved seems to expect it's to the death, however, I think this may be the other kind.
It's to the death not first blood or till Josephine interrupts it XD

I love this scene I just have one small beef with it if you specialize in one handed warrior or a rogue with high dexterity the animation and dialog choice in the beginning should reflect that

I guess today everything is too much work for devs and/or too much money to invest for assholes in managment.

To be fair a fencing duel is way different from a rough and tumble swordfight or even using dual daggers, it takes a lot more training, finesse, timing and strategy than one would think and on top of that this isn't wild, hack and slash deathmatch, it's a point based duel so charging in would be either ineffective or inappropriate for the circumstances. The Inquisitor (regardless of background) is untrained in using a rapier/epee/saber so it's only natural they'd struggle against someone experienced in these duels regardless of their personal skill on the battlefield.

He took that incredibly well and respectfully. Sometimes I feel bad for those people in stories

It's very random and off-topic, but that doesn't look like a rapier. Rapiers are thinner and symmetrical. This looks more like a saber or a cavalry sword.
Yeah, those are definitely Scottish basket-hilt sabers.
Yeah, all blades are kind of sized up in this game. They use Greatswords as if they were longswords, and longswords as if they were arming swords
It "FFSS" fat fantasy swords syndrome. A curse started with the movie Conan. Now every sword blade is scaled up to 5 times thicker and wider.
I love everything about this scene, and finding one with an elf inquisitor like mine brings back happy memories of romancing Josephine. The rapier fight is actually really well staged and a good pick to show how any Inquisitor would be at a disadvantage against a skilled practitioner. The inquisitor fights with the seat-of-your-pants skill of someone whose had sword training but doesn't really know how to use a rapier, and you can see he could easily cut her down. He's just waiting for her to get tired or make a mistake so he can win without any real insult or damage. I didn't have the underworld perk for this scene in my playthrough, so I didn't see him lose his cool and thus his control with the blade... the wild stabs are so on point and show the control and skill he had before. And then Josephine rushing out and standing up to the Inquisitor like a boss... truly a partner, not a submissive. The best part is her reaction to saying "I love you," the spin, and that leg lift at the end. Her romance was sweet, chaste, and very satisfying.
Can we get Otranto as a companion in 4? He seems fun.

Why a French accent ? Antiva is clearly inspired by Spain. Orlais is the one inspired by France.
His voice actor is uncredited, but some claim it's Tom Taylorson, who became pathfinder ryder few years later.

One thing I hate about this dual is when you’re a sword fighter it still looks like you’re struggling. I can understand the movements for a Mage or Rogue because they wouldn’t be use to a sword even if the Inquisition has you training to use one.
So this actually does make a lot of sense in the context of historical swordplay! The Inquisitor would have trained with either a two-handed sword or a longsword/one-handed sword. Those are both very different weapons than a rapier. Rapiers are much lighter and were used to both attack and defend, while the Inquisitor would have been trained to either use a two-handed blade or a one-handed sword and shield. Rapiers were not designed to be brought onto a battlefield and were used exclusively for civilian dueling, and the way they were used was very very different than the kind of sword the Inquisitor would have been familiar with.

The embrace scene is a bit awkward since elven women are shorter than human women yet your Inquisitor is taller after spinning Jose around then back to shorter on the next shot.

I'm surprised there aren't more comments pointing out that those are definitely not rapiers (thin, good for poking and not much else), and would generally be considered some type of saber (good for slashing).
I do appreciate that you're not on even ground with this guy no matter your class because fencing is a different kind of art.

I'm glad I can romance Josephine. Shes the only character in inquisition I would choose to romance with. Origins was Morrigan, 2 was Merrill, and soon Josephine. Just got to have some time to play.

There's something about Antivans and Rivaini in Dragon Age's games (maybe it's the fact that they were pretty obviously based on Italian and Spaniards)
