Really happy people are enjoying this video, and the epic journey they made. A true adventure, and it was an honor to speak with Mike.
Oh Man, this popped into my feed today as a suggestion, so glad I watched it. What a truly remarkable experience and such a great inspiration. I've been following Overland Bound for years, but never saw this video until now. Thank you for sharing.
I just got done watching The Land Rover expedition through the Darien Gap I give it to you
I remember following the story in Off-Road magazine in the late 70's.
Before Mark Smith's passing i was able to sit with him in Deadwood South Dakota at a JJUSA Banquet for a couple of hours and talk about jeeps and adventures. He was very generous with his stories and time. He was a very interesting fellow to say the least. i still can't believe he sat us at his table and palavered for so long.
THIS!..... Is the sort of thing that I want to see. It seems as though you've trying out a few different avenues with your channel. There are a ton 4x4 and overlanding channels, I follow quite a few but I have to say that you can only watch so many gear reviews. Can only watch other people camp out so many times. Trips that I can do are interesting of course but I for one enjoyed this. Search out more history, more background on expeditions like this. Thumbs up!
Awesome! Good to hear Ed. The channel here is for the viewers, not me, so I try to inspire, inform, and keep the content interesting while sticking to a fewe basic categories (Rig Walk Arounds, How To's, Trips, Reviews, and Interviews). Your input is definitely appreciated, and I'm glad you like the video!
@@OverlandBound from humble beginnings to ........!?
@@OverlandBound True, one of the best episodes ever!
Agreed ....these guys didnt just go on a trip they went on an adventure
Agreed! I do Jeep/canoe/fly fishing expeditions and lol it’s a small niche…….so I absolutely love this kind of content.
This is GOLD. Probably one of the best youtube videos I've seen to date. I know it might be difficult to find iconic stories like this but maybe you could make this into a series where people talk about epic trips they've taken!
I watched the original video here on RUclips as well. Sometimes you forget you're living in the good old days right now.
WHAT A GREAT EPISODE.
The Corvair they found was when 3 Corvair's crossed the Darien Gap years before. 3 went in, 2 made it out...
@@matthewmuellner Pretty sure its on RUclips...promotional stunt by Chevrolet/GM.
You've got to be shitting me 😲
The humility and respect for the jungle really shines through 👍
They were an incredible group guys to say the least.
This would make a great movie.
So I lived and wheeled in Panama for3 years. The jungle is no joke! Tip of the hat to these guys. Plus Mark Smith is the reason the Rubicon trail is still open today.
This does make you reflect on how today it's all about gear and we forget that you don't need all the fancy tech to get out and explore. All you need is a little bit of ingenuity.
Ingenuity, will and a Jeep. Just Enough Essential Parts.
@@attnielthomas7856 Donated jeeps and tires.
It's amazing they did this without lockers and larger tires. I bet lockers would have been the most useful upgrade.
These are great. I saw the corvair and the land Rover expeditions.
I had a willys cj2a 53 with the flat 4 in it n mustang buckets ..went all over eastern and western Washington hunting .fishing ect. wow that thing went anywhere ..pto the way to go ..wish I never sold that ..would run on any thing for fuel ..gr8 rig...but wow what an adventure ..SWEET ..going to get book...congrates n thanks also to the lady ..on. No regrets..thanks you all have inspired me at age 57 not to stop living..NO REGRETS..PERIOD
What an incredible interview!! Thanks
Thank you for bringing us this great story of the adventurous human spirit. It’s Epic.
Inspiring, well organised back in the 70s.
This is one of that stories that makes me gear up my 2gen 4Runner and just go.... Thk you for the video.
Grew up in Georgetown, they would show that movie to us in grade school. Looking forward to getting the book. Thank you
I grew up in Georgetown too. Watched this movie in Mr. Depue's woodshop class at Golden Sierra High School in 1986. Good times.
Wow! I lived in Costa Rica at that time and remember hearing about the expedition. Outstanding interview!
these interviews are a good addition to the old video
Your channel just keeps getting better, thank you for the inspiration when I needed it most. Woke up on the floor in my freezing cold lockup this morning because I gave up my place to save cash for the 'next' adventure and thought what da f'k am I doing here. Now I'm up and tinkering on the Cruiser and rearing to go!
I remember that I was a senior in high school and remember reading and see pictures of this trip and I was hooked
This is not amazing, awesome, unbelievable or astonishing !!! It is the human spirit at its' absolute best - truely inspirational and living life to the absolute. Magic !
This needs to be on network tv. Awesome Awesome job!!
Well done. Great story. A true adventure. Thanks for helping the story of his (and her) epic journey be told.
This was great to watch. More episodes like this would be amazing... thank you Michael and Corrie !
More videos like this! I watch a lot of gear reviews and truck mods and all that get boring after a while but the stories, well they are the real deal.
This is Awesome, founders of "Overland" for real!
What an amazing adventure. Thank you.
Great documentary. Inspiring and Adventurous. ! love it
Great video! In 1965 a group of " fairly stock" Renault 4L did that trip. Look for " Renault Contact Terre de Feu - Alaska 1965" video.
I find it hard to believe they went through the Darien gap. Did they or did they do what most do and go around that some other way while doing the PanAm?
@@mcearl8073 yes, i think you are right, i think they did the PanAm.
Honestly my generation, has never experienced something in the likes of these men did.
I really want to try something of these sorts that's last over one year, it's seems so fun & hard.
What an epic story, thank you so much..
It's so crazy when he said Georgetown and Aurburn, I live right in between both in a town called Cool. That is so awesome all this started literally within 10 miles of me and I just randomly thought about crossing the Darien gap myself and started researching this
Amazing story!! Wow! Thank you for taking the time to share this!
I’m so impressed with this movie. Thanks for doing the work.
What a great story and adventure! Thank you for sharing!!!
Incredible! One of the best stories!
Hard to believe that the tire designers Goodyear never thought to reinforce the sidewalls of the tires for the longest overland journey in history ???
Thank you for sharing this story! I saw a documentry on this expedition about a week ago. It's awesome that you got to sit and talk with someone that participated in such an adventure. Great interview for sure. Thanks again!
Best video yet. I really enjoyed the different perspectives and how they overcame the challenges.
Glad I found your video. I just purchased the book to read. There was one of the Jeeps on display at a Camp Jeep event, I attended. Glad I had the opportunity to see it.
Well done, extremely interesting documentary, there was also a similar trip in 1972 by two British range rovers.
Epic Story !!! Thank you for sharing🌐
Most excellent! I've known of this expedition since it happened and back in the early 90's I was in Panama (off & on) with the Navy and I knew some Special Warfare Operators who had done some work down in the Gap and I always wanted to try something like that but then I got old…LOL! I find myself continually "schooling" folks on the Gap and this video was sort of the icing on this cake! Great interview, Michael! ~ ~ ~ ~ "Scooter" in East Texas (OB#22651)
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I could have talked to Mr. Arnold for hours.
Good stuff M! Shows how far vehicles have evolved, but how little was needed. I'm not sure that today's rigs would do so much better, but I'm glad to see tire technology has improved. Some great stories from him I'll bet.
Amazing story, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Michael, I really enjoyed watching this video. Overlanding has been around for quite awhile I see. Amazing what they achieved with the Stock jeeps and equipment they had. Keep up the good work.

Xtreme Overland USA
Such a wonderful, inspiring story and your video and interviewing absolutely did it justice. Thank you!
Wow! Great job bringing this story back for us to view. I had no idea this adventure took place.
They used to have one of those Jeeps in the museum in Geogetown, CA.
excellent video of an epic adventure!
This is incredible work and effort on your part! Thank you so much for this quality material!
I was looking at google maps and wondered about the Darian Gap as well. Looked like it’s really the only real road block for a road trip from North to South America. Nice info.
Completely fantastic. Thanks for posting this.
It's interesting to note that this expedition happened 2 years before the reported first Camel trophy event. According to google a group of Germans with three JEEPS explored the Amazon! Another Jeep legacy.
Arthur blessitt did make it he is still carrying his cross around the world!
That would be an amazing experience
Great story, and what an adventure
This was fantastic and I would love to see more like it.
Much respect for making this video!!!! Definitely more inspiring than any new "gear" you could possibly review and/or purchase. The last few words of the video sum it all up perfectly! Well done.
That is so great, and I thought my first Rubicon Trip in 2005 was tough.
Great video Michael!👍
Do more!!!😉
There’s another story about two land rovers that did the gap in 1972. also a very interesting story
Excellent video, thanks!
Where are the jeeps now???
One heck of an adventure. Great video!

Dude eating ice cream at the end. Wins at life.
Wow what an epic adventure
Outstanding video. What a great encouragement and inspiration for us aspiring explorers :)
great interview, great people, great story!
Great interview!! Thanks....
A British team did it from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego with two Range Rovers about five or six years earlier.
Great interview.
Great video! How ironic, large bulldozers, graders, earth movers could easily build a road across there ....Just use boulders, etc. for elevated road base, giant concrete culverts for river crossing bridges, game crossings,.etc. Billions from development from the road, tolls, travelers, could help all local people, tribes, local towns, countries etc.. Why don't we do it?😎 Challenging, but easily possible. Never would be such a road that could bring so much benefit to so many. Someday soon I hope...
Thank you !
Totally epic, thanks for posting guys.
awesome and legendary Jeep trip
Good job lady. I bet your story is just as good
Great episode!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
About to retire, buy a 4wd and head south. (From Canada). Disappointed there is still no road thro the gap. Great video. Are the guys from Overland Bound thinking of making it thro?
Overlanders are an awesome crowd! This video was very cool! Adventure never gets old and old dogs still love playing in the dirt and mud! I’m 51 and I refuse to give up what I love. I’m still a toys-r-us dude, a teenager ! I refuse to bow down to bengay and Geritol and to hell with AARP AND ALL that Old fogey BS. HELL YA BOYS LETS GO TEAR US UP SOME TRAILS!
Nicely done
Awesome! Thank you!
His wife is a winner for sure!
awesome can't wait to get the book
I want to double like this! Amazing!
Great video thanks for sharing
awesome trip! Real heroic guys!
Well done!
Amazing we drove a land rover across central america was wild. I wonder how a trackked 6 or 8 wheel Argo would do. They float in water too
best ever thank you
Amazing
Thats awesom bro
Still a Great story!!
What an adventure!
