Best ad for fatwood I ever saw🤣 Nicely done video, to the point, not annoying, decent camera work....I'll go ahead and sub (a rarity for me) because this in my opinion should be at least a 10k subbed channel.
Waxwood VS fatwood. I made my own waxwood, and bought a bag of fatwood from the store. Both have their advantages and I am stuck at 50:50 for both. Waxwood is easy to process, and it does not seem to dry out, while Fatwood seems hotter/Energy dense. I like both because they are very clean to use.
Try adding some lamp oil to the wax before soaking the wood and it will ignite much easier, it doesnt seem to effect the set of the wax or anything unless to much lamp oil is added. 👍
I wonder if you could soak in oil or even kerosene first, then wax to seal it. You also may as well wrap the wood with that wax string may also prove very useful as a fire extender.
My grandad used to have an old tin filled with pine wood soaked in either diesel or kerosene for starting camp fires when we were fishing on the surf. (I don't think you can have open fires on the beach anymore, too many laws and etc.)
Get good test pal. Good in a pinch, but I think house hold candles would have more value used as an emergency lighting solution in a power down situation. As you said fatwood is king. Take it easy.
We don't get fatwood in the Southern Hemisphere, but an old Bushie taught me a trick he learned as a boy. Freshly cut timber tapers dipped or soaked in old cooking oil - they used fat / lard in the old days. 1 match or spark & the taper ignites.
I have a bag of candle ends and broken ones. I have done the cotton pad soaked in hot wax but as yet untested so I might try this to start up my Kelly kettle. Got to be better than trying to find other tinder's
Cotton pads In wax are good but cotton soaked in Vaseline is a lot better. You could also soak the wood in turpentines or citronella it might keep the bugs away
Great video, but my honest thoughts to you. Is with the wax-wood. You would already have your cotton wax/alcohol pad lit to start with some small twigs to get the first 2min of fire going, and then I would use those wax-wood pieces to then be the base for what you put on after. As you scraped it to start the fire, I fully agree, it wasn't the best way of doing it. I feel it still is an important part of your kit and worth making as a whole. Good stuff man! Thanks!
The return for effort there just doesn't seem worth it to me. Someone else suggested adding some lamp oil to the wax, I was going to suggest lighter fluid. As you said though, Cotton wool and Vaseline is much easier and works fantastic.
Most of the other videos ive seen where someone is making waxwood they put an additive in too like oil/parrafin etc to the wax before submerging the wood.
My suggestion is to use your Chainsaw to cut the trees lengthwise instead of cross cutting it. This technique shreds the wood. Then once those shreds are dry, soak them in wax until it stops bubbling. You were correct in saying that because when it stops bubbling then the wood is completely saturated. I hope this helps.
Wonder if you waxed your fat wood if it would seal in the pine oils so they don’t evaporate??? Now I have to try it…Count your fingers every time you use a saw…Have fun stay safe.
Thanks geezer Yh it works well I’d say it has its place but that took me over a hour to do . Vaseline takes 20 mins … I wasted my time so you don’t have to😂😂😂😂

I don't see the point, if your going to carry a form of lighting a fire with you take firelighters they're cheap, fatwood is good if you can source it in the wild.

Wow …thank you
Mix charcoal lighter fluid with the wax and then soak. This also works with small cotton face cleansing discs to make great fire starters

I think the wax wood has a cleaner burn and better waterproof qualities but I think I’d still go with fat wood

Thanks a few people have said lamp oil now I might have to give it a go
I'm impressed 👍 nice bit of work bud informative liked it
Thank you kiwi 💪

Yeah about 1/3 Vaseline and wax, increase burn time
Old mate swore by soaking the slim wooden tapers in old cooking oil or fat.

You can .
I use lighter fluid personally you don’t need a lot I melt the wax then put the lighter fluid in . I’ve seen it done other ways I’m just lazy
Really nice job making the wax wood and doing the comparison. Thanks for sharing

Wonder if you soaked them in lamp oil or lighter fluid before waxing would be beneficial?
I was thinking some sort turpentine or citronella
Thanks for the idea💪

I have learned that the wax is just to waterproof it ads nothing else .. thanks for watching and leaving a comment

Budget Bushcraft ,,,, love it 😂 ,,,, Bushcraft should be cheap , skill over kit i say great idea
Thanks geezer
We all do luxury bushcraft today🤣🤣
Thousands of years ago they didn’t use Amazon prime 😂😂😂
Great test!
Thank you sir 💪
How about boil the wood in water, compress it in a vice, then once its dry take it from the vice and put it into the wax?
It's good to have options.
think you are overlooking the waterproofing aspect.
soak in vegetable oil and wipe clean?
I’ll have to check this one out thanks💪
Dryer lint and Vaseline
That’s a good combo💪
Old crayons are great source of wax also
very nice

Yes that’ll work… good idea
Fatwood may be the best ,but the wax is cleaner burn 🔥
So true wax wood don't do all that smoke like fat wood
Great video mate..but like u said its abit of effort but it worked brother😊 nice one man😊

Just based on what I seen, the fat woodnwas obviously better, but the waxed wood and regular wood performed about the same...
Yes agreed but the wax does waterproof the wood .. thanks for watching
The most important thing about wax wood is that it is water proof.
That is what I have learned lol
