  • The PKKP peoples have released a video showing the extent of devastation that occurred at the 46,000-year-old cave site in WA when mining giant Rio Tinto blew it up 'to access higher volumes of high-grade ore'
    'Devastated' Indigenous owners say Rio Tinto misled them ahead of Juukan Gorge blast ► www.theguardia...

    This cave was 46, 000 years old. For context, the entire history of the ancient egyptians is only 5000 years old. This cruel act was done for the sole purpose of money. Rio Tinto is hardly sorry.

    Rio Tinto should be made to build a museum on the site with replica caves in conjunction with the traditional owners and historical records

    • @ejbh3160
      @ejbh3160 4 года назад +19

      Problem with that approach, is that destroying ancient sites then becomes a simple maths calculation - spend a few quid on a 'museum' & keep destroying sites.
      The only thing which will stop this sort of thing is when CEOs go to jail along with every board member involved in the decision to go ahead & destroy the site.
      And sure - then they should be made to dig out the rubble & return the site as far as possible to its original state.
      When the 'cost' of destroying it is outweighed by the cost of restoring it, and when the threat of white collar jail time is real - only then will this sort of wanton destruction be stopped.

    Its deeply saddening. How can this be possible? What current legislation, or lack thereof, enables corporations to destroy areas recognised as heritage? This is a devastating impact not only for Indigenous Australians, but all Australians and all people. There is a wealth of knowledge in this cave and the destruction is short sighted and futile. This is all before considering the environmental significance! All for a small group of people to profit economically. No sense. I hope Indigenous people, can have their voice heard, become self determining and have a place in protecting and sustaining our land in recognition of the past, present and future generations.

      Written language is believed to be only a bit over 5000 years old... this place is 46,000+ years old... so no names recorded. Ancestors used storytelling (see David Attenbouroughs documentary on Australia and First Nations people recording climate events through dance and story) and handprints on cave walls, and we sit in a classroom and find a 10 minute game of Chinese whispers difficult? Try 46,000 years. Aboriginals have nothing to prove to anyone. They are the true people of this land. They have been mistreated enough. And their heritage destroyed. Over and over. It is enough.

    Simon McKeon a Rio Tinto director recently stated that a culture of complacency led to the destruction of Juukan Gorge and that Rio Tinto isn't the arrogant company it once was. He's right in some ways ....Rio Tinto isn't the arrogant company it once was, it's a newly organised arrogant company but an arrogant company nonetheless. The only thing that's changed is the date on the calendar. All Rio wants is for this to be swept under the carpet and for it all to be forgotten about. People who believe Rio hold any kind of remorse for their actions are complete fools.
