- On August 3rd 2010, the NHL's greatest American-born player left the Dallas Stars organisation after 19 seasons and signed with his hometown team the Detroit Red Wings. Over the next year, the 40-year old forward would receive a nasty injury, miss out on a huge career milestone thanks to his coach and record the worst production of his entire 20-year career...
This is how Mike Modano was the right player on the wrong team!

Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne's disastrous year in Colorado, those two are my all time favorite players as a Ducks fan, and it was very very weird to see them on the Avalanche and doing so poorly
That 03-04 season for both of them was a turning point for different reasons. Some good, some bad
Teemu had knee problems if I remember right and Paul had concussion issues
@@neroameealucard945 Teemu was on one knee and I think Kariya had a wrist injury that year
I am an avs fan and i remember that season... Such high hopes at the beginning of the year that just fell apart. that season was a terrible season for the entire avs organization.
@@ThePepsiBoy138 Ya he was on one knee for quite a while(several years). You can tell when he had the knee surgery because his numbers started to rebound even later on in his career to levels that were actually superior and more consistent than earlier(like with the Av's) when they theoretically should have been better. As for Paul, that poor guy was just the victim of someone suffering concussion symptoms and it's really unfortunate that his career was cut so short.
yep I recently started a GM mode on NHL 12 and modano is a red wing on there, pretty cool lol
A Michigan legend
That’s why I respect him
Yes Modano's ties were strong to Detroit. One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video, was that Modano won Mr. Illitch (owner of Red Wings at the time) his first trophy in hockey back in 1985. Modano played for Illitch's Little Caeser's Midgets.
Modano was going to play a middle 6 role in Detroit, the expectation was 0.5 points per game. Which he was close to, without injuries he woulda met that mark. As a Red Wings fan not sure who had higher expectations than that given his age and performance the previous season.
Keep in mind that cut tendon injury was a potentially season ending injury. It was a miracle he even got to play again during that season.
1500 game, yes Babcock is an asshole and would do that on purpose.
Things weren't always so rosy for Modano in Dallas, recall him being stripped of the captaincy during that run.
Why did he lose the captaincy?
Detroit Red Wings Legend Mike Modano
He's definitely a legend to hockey fans in Detroit.
I’m gonna was a drink gu
The man will always have my respect, loved seeing him in a wings jersey
Red Wings and Livonia Michigan legend Mike Modano
Wasn't he from Westland
I've got a suggestion. Guy lafleur and his coming out of retirement to play for not only the Quebec Nordiques but also the New York Rangers.
Lol and he also got drafted by the North Stars in the expansion draft of 1991 but did not play for them because he was working in the front office with the Quebec Nordiques.
As a red wings fan, Mike Modano was definitely one player I wished had been in a wings jersey 10 years earlier than he was.
You should do one on Paul Coffey. I think of him as an Oiler and Penguin but it seems like ever6 year I see him in different teams uniform and I think “WTF, he was on the Bruins/Hurricanes/Flyers/Blackhawks/Whalers/Kings/Red Wings?”
My question is, why does this British guy know so much about hockey.
“Mike Modano best American born hockey player”
Brian Leetch: am I a joke to you?
LaFontaine and J.R too...
It will be Patrick Kane in a few years anyway
Well, I remember Modano when he was playing for the kalamazoo wings, who at the time was the farm team for the Dallas stars...goalie Marty Turco was also a member of the k-wings. Im sure there were others, but those were the players I remember for that time
I remember Turco but not Modano in Kzoo but I was very young. Turco was my hero as a kid in Kzoo but then years later after that year with chicago I saw him at a autograph signing near detroit for a video game release. He took one look at my Michigan k wings jersey and said oh I remember that sh*t hole. Broke my heart
Babcock is a Babdick
Kariya and Selanne in Colorado
Daniel Alfredsson!!
More proof Babs did that sort of stuff on purpose ... and all this time I thought Mike Commodore was as just a butt hurt psycho
I think I'm the only one to pre order his jersey. Had to wait to find out what number it would be. Ended up getting a signed mini stick on clearance at the Joe souvenir shop too.
Wow - Greatest American born player in league history is a bold move. For one, Brian Leetch would like a word with you. Some say Modano's mouth is still open to this day..........Also, Bobby Hull playing for the Rangers is a good and bizarre tale............
Us Red Wings fans are well aware that Modano played for us!
Also, Chelios might have something to say about greatest American born player ever...
Cam Ward and his season with the Hawks was forgettable, and I think it would be great for this series
Patrick Sharp with Dallas maybe?
Not only is it a pretty non class move by Babcock but Modano doesn't get to say goodbye to his loyal fans in Minnesota where he had played for so long
I hope Babcock never gets a job in the NHL or Hockey in general again
I didn’t mind him coming to Detroit bc he’s from the area and wanted to play for them. But yeah.. Babcock cutting him was brutal
I'm a Canadian interested in an American perspective - In your eyes is Modano the greatest American player or is a more flamboyant and charismatic player like Jeremy Roenick superior?
Once again great video
How about doing a video on hockey equipment brands
Remember when we were kids you would see guys wearing easton Cooper jofa Sherwood koho Louisville vaughn warrior mission etc etc
Now it's only like ccm Bauer
It would be interesting to see who bought out who and when and for how much
My favourite player always used to get him in whatever NHL season mode I was playing Best was probably my NHL 2003 Colorado Avalanche team where he was on a super team with Sakic , Forsberg , Kariya , Hejduk , Selanne and Roy
Right player, right team. It was his last season regardless. At least he got to play for the Wings and a possible Cup.
The fact that Babcock railroaded this legend from playing his 1500th game, will go down as one of the lowest points in Red Wing history, especially when Mo was a Gordie Howe fan growing up. What an absolute pos move.
Actually, his attended high school was in Livonia, Michigan (because of non-perfect school zoning). He grew up in the adjacent city Westland, Michigan. Westland (in a big ceremony of several hundred people) named the local hockey area after him, "Mike Madono Arena." (I was there. I witnessed the inauguration.) Here is a tweet and twitter photo: Mike Modano Ice Arena gets a face lift! twitter.com/CityOfWestland/status/1031979319944507394/photo/2 (Click on the right side twitter photo to see the full outside wall painting). Notice, in the outside wall painting, there are two pictures: left side; Dallas Star and right side; Detroit Red Wing. We Americans (and we hockey [Red Wings] fans), REMEMBER Mike Madono.
Same topic right player wrong team, as a lifelong Red Wings fan, for future episodes do Daniel Alfredsson as a Red Wing.
Teemu Selanne was an Av?
also
What happened to Brandon Gormley?
Babcock was losing it already at this point. Had modano been healthy the whole year and allowed to play more. Might have ended better
@John Sabp that damn dyslexia. Old habits just are hard to control
I am surprised that he never got 100 points,I thought he did.
No mention of his most famous appearance? On the Mighty Ducks film.
Not one Detroit fan who understands hockey was waiting for Modano to play in the Wings.
Hey can we get a what happened to wade redden plz
Arizona Coyotes LEGEND Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroid Red Wings LEGENDS Daniel Alfredsson and Mike Modano.
Mr. America? More like Mr. Red Wings.
Mats sundin!
Eric lindors with the leafs eeesh that was bad
same
Who's lindors?
Could you do Fedorov?
paul karyia with the preds
You should do mark messier on the San Jose Sharks
Idea: Gordie Howe with the Hartford Whalers
Wait,Mike Modano briefly played for the Redwings???
I didn't follow modano as a redwing BC I was in too much shock.
Doug Gilmour as a Montréal Canadien. ..
Should’ve played in 1500
remember when they had legwand too
Wrong team my ass! My gripe is that he wasn't here long enough!
16 points in 42 games isnt even that bad for a 40yr old 3rd liner.
One problem...Babcock!
Redwings didn't use Modano to his strengths as an aging player. To many injuries.I was hoping he wouldve been able to help the wings.
More of a Wrong Player, Right Team kinda case.
Everyone in the comment section talking about the greatest American player. Meanwhile Lafontaine's career points look like something out of a video game. If he didn't have so many problem with injuries I don't think there would be any debate in this.
More like "Right Player, Wrong Time". He would've torn it up if he joined the Wings in the early 2000's
Vladimir krutov on winnipeg
Next time... maybe Wendel Clark? :-)
Modano will always be classier than Babcock.
hmm.....Maybe, Ron Francis?.....just a thought
hell yeah i have a Ron Francis whalers jersey
Wasn't just his stats in Dallas for him leaving Dallas had just gone into bankruptcy thanks to Tom hicks and league office tookover payroll meaning their budget was at league minimum
You really think Modano ranks ahead of Chelios or even Kane as the best American-born player ever?
Im sorry but if I was a player I'd scratch myself so he could play
8:35 lol Shane Doan and Matt Cullen, they weren't bad but 1500 + games seriously?
why not? Playing 1,500 has nothing to do with greatness, just durability
by the time he made it to the Red Wings he had nothing left, who is anyone kidding, Red Wings were already just starting to decline and they thought they'd bring a household name in.....................FAIL !!!!!!
I’m not sure Modano is the greatest American player in history. Leech, Hull, or Patty Kane are in that argument.
Subscribe you lot, geezus. Also, a 30 point player these days is a steal for 3 million. Yikes. 🙄
Touchdown!!
Why do once great athletes desperately hold on too long and become mediocrities. I can understand if it’s about money, but otherwise, no. You should do Messier and Vancouver. That’s the perfect example of greatness devolving into mediocrity.
I’d argue Brian Leech was a better player tbh
You'd be wrong.
First like
What babcock did was horrible
Martin Brodeur
Third
The greatest American born player? Maybe top 5 with Hull, Leetch, Richter, and Kane but not the #1. Also nobody calls Mr.Hockey "Gordon" Howe... It's always been Gordie
Hull was born in Ontario, Canada... And Richter isn't even the greatest american goalie of all time.
Calling modano the greatest american hockey player is just wrong. Patty kane has proved that he is the greatest. Modano even had less points than games while kane propably will end up with alot more points than games. Ofc you can say that modano played in a low scoring time but then i can say that he also played in the highest scoring era of the late 80s. And the dead puck era wasnt had pretty much the same goalscoring as the late 2000s and 2010s so it doesnt matter anyway. Kane>modano
To early
You don't know hockey
Patrick Kane is the greatest American born NHL player not Mike Modano
While it might be true years down the road, I think it's a little early to say that...
