#AppleNotes #NoteTaking #Productivity
I’m using MS OneNote and it is great.
Also another benefit of Apple Notes that if you add pictures you’ve taken like photo of receipts and add it to notes- then the search will find it because apple is scanning the photos and index also the texts that it scan from the picture - which is brilliant
A great video as ever Carl - thank you. I was a loyal and paid up EN user since 2008. I jumped ship to Apple Notes over a year or so ago. Absolutely no regrets. In addition to what you said in your video, it’s worth saying the support for Apple Pencil is another good reason to switch. Ie ‘writing’ or drawing diagrams etc . Also the integration with other apps such as reminders make it fantastic. Only thing I’d love to see is to take a leaf out of MS OneNote and give us an ‘infinite canvas’ ie the ability to combine text , writing and drawing anywhere on the page.
That's a good point, Jason. Apple Pencil support is fantasitc.
Agreed. I’ve tried them all and Apple Notes just delivers.
Apple Notes is where it's at for me. Since I'm also Ride-Or-Die Mac, it's just accessible everywhere I want to be. I can copy text and share it to a Quick Note with two clicks. I have a Siri Shortcut where I can dictate whatever is on my mind to a Daily Note and clear it during my Daily Planning. It shares so well with Reminders that meal plans, planning session checklists, etc. are right where I need them when I need them.
Other apps can do cool stuff, and I do use Obsidian for large, research-based projects (like running my D&D campaigns), but for my day-to-day life, Apple Notes works the best.
I’ve just switched over from Evernote to Bear. I’ll still use Apple Notes as a scratch pad here and there.
This conclusion is no real surprise, to those of us who've regularly watched your content. 😉
It is a PLEASANT surprise because it REAFFIRMS that Carl is not a SHILL to some paying sponsoring notes APP.
I’m with you on this. In the early days Notes kept crashing on me so I ignored it for years. Lately, I’ve been using it again and it really is the bees knees. As you say, it has just the right amount of functionality for those quick ideas. Also, you can create bulleted lists which can be linked into Reminders for timed activation. Great for such as shopping lists where you can reactivate items by simply tapping the “done” buttons to clear them for reuse.
Love that about Apple Notes.
I am in full agreement - productivity requires stability in the process and tools used. When it comes to software simplicity is key and this is what Apple Notes does best.
After 13 years with EN
We said goodbye
Enough is enough
It looks like they have lost their way
Wish the best for them
I am using the Apple notes
Carl, Apple notes is the superior app. Follow by OneNote if you are a windows user.
I tried with all my forces use other apps, but these to simply works and get the job done
Didn’t know you could spotlight search. Brilliant. Thank you!
You're welcome.
💯👍 correct Carl... Well done Sir ! I use Apple for all critical, private, financial, personal info in Apple Notes .... as I trust APPLE.... I use Evernote for everything else non-sensitive as I do NOT trust Evernote security, Evernote "packability..." or Evernote's evil, constantly-changing, management... PERIOD. 😊 And, I never will trust Evernote, even though I enjoy it for much of my non-sensitive info.
Great video - love the simplicity of Apple Notes, although I am a long-time Evernote user. Slightly off-topic, but I'd love to see a video on how you use Evernote as your CRM.
Will look into that for you, Claudia. Difficult to do without showing client information.
I use Apple notes for everything in life and business. I started a freelance business 4 years ago. I started trying to manage my workflow with spreadsheets, Trello, dipped into Evernote, even Asana... but they just didn't work for me. But 2 years ago I moved (almost) entirely into the Mac ecosystem. Luckily, this was at just the right time as Mac had updated the notes app. Now, my business is not very complicated (it's just me), so managing customer details and projects in notes is very doable. And since all of my family are Mac users, too it makes family comms easy.
I'm fonding more and more people are coming around to your way of thinking, Sally.
is there a way to import notes from Obsidian into Apple notes that preserves attachments?
Excellent video. Our business had 10 years of data in Evernote. But this month we have ended using it. The price hikes are one main reason. Exported all using enex files. For personal stuff : Apple notes is so very good, and using MS teams for business files. I learnt the spotlight search tip here on your video today. Very handy. 👍🏻🤗🕸
I haven't quite yet pulled the plug on Evernote, but slowly but surely I am finding Apple Notes can do what Evernote used to do so well.
I agree. I have recently bought a Mac to go along with my iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. I've been using Apple Notes as my primary note-taking app. I'm really surprised how good it is.
It does surprise. It's slowly but surely getting better and better.
@@Carl_Pullein Absolutely. I'm looking forward to the next updates in iOS 17 and MacOS 14.
I am in a mixed ecosystem so I try to stay away from Apple Notes (I use OneNote) but I would agree it's very good. The one thing you didn't mention is that it's natively integrated with all iOS, iPadOS and MacOS devices so you can always share and collaborate with other Apple users without wondering if they have the write notes app. Very powerful.
You're right, there. I share notes with my 79-year-old mother, and see finds it so easy.
Another Carl-nificent review! This made me rethink how to do my knowledge management setup. I’ve been using Evernote since 2014 and a Mac user since 1989, and have recently purchased an iPad to go with my iPhone. Carl, I’d pay for a course from you on an Evernote-Apple Notes migration or some kind of symbiotic management. Team Pullen! 😊
Apple Notes will allow you to import Evernote files. The way I would do it is notebook by notebook. That way you can clean up your notes at the same time.
@@Carl_Pullein great plan! It’s time a did a ‘digital detox’ with my Evernote and cleanup, anyway.
Carl, I see you have Drafts on your bottom row on your phone. Could you do a latest video of how you use it? I know David Sparks swear by it but I have never gotten around to figure out how to best use it. I know it's sort of a starting out app and then transfer it to another note taking app. Would love to hear your thoughts.
It can be very powerful, but I only use its quick capture abilities. I'll see what I can do about an update video.
I do the same…plus Tot for super temporary notes
More often than not I’m not here to listen to the contents regarding the topic. But just for the wisdom of the years.
Hahaha thank you Vincent.
For those who want those personal email addresses, are you aware that you can link iOS Mail items into Notes and recall them at a touch? You can also link websites into Notes or simply copy & paste.
well said and clearly articulated… thanks
Thank you and you're welcome.
I absolutely agree with you on everything and I love Apple Notes, especially when I need to share with my kids and family… and I use Obsidian for my “personal” stuff etc. and of course Markdown 😂 Great video.
It might be the way forward in the future. Notes apps like Apple Notes for the quick stuff. Obsidian/Evernote for the longer stuff
I'm thinking of moving to just using Todoist and Apple notes. I did see a really good tip on another channel about creating a page in apple notes just to store tags.
I have ToDoist Premium and I still use Evernote because if integrates with ToDoist extremely well.
imho it’s not the best for user experience but it has built in backup bc it’s linked to your apple account so it’s the simplest
Hi Carl! Awesome video as usual ❤ I just wanted to ask you how you feel about tracking your time by an app for example Toggl or any other time tracking app?
I'm a student far away from the kind of work that you do but your advices help me a lot. I've seen that I found myself less fidgeting with the apps I'm using when I go by the systems you talk about and more focused on the actual outcomes. Thank you so much.
I've never used one. I've focused it the other way round. This is how much time I am willing to spend on this right now.
Hi Carl, I use Evernote since 9 years and am thinking of moving to another note taking app because of the bad things I hear recently about Evernote.
As an Apple user, I discovered Apple Notes recently and I'm glad with it for the reasons you mentioned here.
I only miss the web clipper from Evernote and the personal Evernote e-mail address (where I can send all my important e-mails)
Hi Christian, I wouldn't believe everything you read. All that's happened is the team has been transferred to Europe. The Europeans are also pretty good at software.
@@Carl_Pulleinstill, better have some exit strategy
Apple notes is my favorite but I still use bear for one reason. Export features. I really don’t like how apple notes only lets you export as PDF which makes it so hard to really use effectively. Also I am a developer and like the bear code formatting
I'm going to use Apple Notes to capture fleeting ideas and then later put them into Evernote. I might story my PDFs and such in Evernote, but I realize aside from the ability to send an email to Evernote and have it appear, I don't use much outside of taking pictures of receipts, and jotting notes.
I noticed the same thing, David.
I made the switch from Evernote to Apple Notes two months ago. Very happy I did for the reasons you gave. I only wish Apple Notes had an email address for me to send emails with hyperlinks like Evernote. I hope there’s an update for this someday.
I've altered my approach there. I've now got used to drag and drop (which is actually faster than forwarding a mail)
@@Carl_Pullein I’ve tried that and using the link button on a quick note that I saw in one of your videos. I just don’t like having to archive the email when I’d rather just delete it. I typically save emails with links to books or articles I want to read later so I need the hyperlinks to remain.
Drag and drop is good - also try using print and then selecting pdf to send to notes -- then forward any attached pdf’s to that same note - you can also create a link to an apple mail using and Alfred workflow --
@@Carl_Pullein Amazing tip
After being an Evernote paid user for 13 years, I am now in the process of moving all my notes from Evernote to Apple Notes because Evernote has become a sluggish nightmare when it comes to sync.
With that said, Apple Notes isn’t replacing Evernote… Apple Notes AND Craft is replacing Evernote. I absolutely LOVE Craft for work and all my creative endeavors because of soooo many reasons.
Craft is also searchable via Spotlight… but only the note title. Hopefully they bring full note search-ability in the future.
Plus, Craft was built for iOS and Mac. It’s buttery smooth. It’s like Apple Notes with some pep.
What I’d love to see is the ability to send emails from mail directly into Apple Notes and/or Craft. It’s the one thing I can do with Evernote that I can’t do with those two apps. I’d also love to see Apple make Notes via browser a better experience. It’s kinda clunky.
Good stuff as always, Carl!
If I were starting out today, I'd just use Apple Notes. A lesson learned. Third-party apps eventually either run out of money or get sold and change unrecognisably. (that might be a bit harsh, though)
@@Carl_Pullein Exactly. Apple Notes is perfect for pretty much anyone. Craft is perfect for those that have been using Apple Notes but want a little more punch.
I’m glad that Craft understood the importance of revenue in order to keep a platform going and offered paid tiers early on.
I still love Apple Notes, though. But Craft offers features that help keep my work and creative stuff more manageable. The toggle feature is a godsend when it comes to projects that have a bazillion details and tasks.
I’m really excited about the future Apple Notes now that Apple is putting more into it. Can’t wait for the ability link notes in iOS 17!
Nice overview of Notes.
I’m an Obsidian user myself. Core markdown is very simple and most new editors have and use the same keyboard shortcuts and menu items. Obsidian is not as quick to get to, which is where I use reminders for capture.
On Evernote; I hope it survives the merger and layoffs that happened. If not, Obsidian has a plugin to import Evernote, even if you don’t use Obsidian in the end it could be helpful in a move to something else.
I've always worried about Obsidian's business model. It's hard to see how they will be able to make enough money to stay around for the long-term.
@@Carl_Pullein I pay for sync (locked in at the old rate) and the business license. The plugins are open source; so they can focus on core features.
If it goes away the files are still plain text; unlike Evernote which is a particularly locked database.
Interesting about the Evernote importer. What happens to attachments that are inside of notes?
@@MobileExperienceChris Hmm good question, not sure, never done it.
@@MobileExperienceChris I have not used it, I moved from Evernote before Obsidian was out. Hope you find your answer.
I use Drafts (which has a great Watch app by the way!) as a temporary note taker and Tot for super-temporary (ie, meeting) notes and Notes for permanent notes…I know my notes stack is probably too much and need to start using just Notes especially since they now have Quick Notes
Forgot to mention I also use Post-It notes (the app not the stickers) as a part of my notes “stack” (no pun intended)
I have adhd and need a simple notes app but I use android. Which notes app would you advise. PS. I just updated my Day One app with the template suggestion from your other video. Thank you so much for that. From South Africa 🇿🇦
I would use Google Keep. It's simple (and free) 🙂
@Carl_Pullein Thank you will check it out
Hookmark takes apple notes to the next level.
I recently just moved all 5 years of my Evernote notes to Apple Note, because of the insane high subscription prices. For me Evernote was perfect all around, but I only needed more than 2 devices to sync. 100 usd is too much to pay per year, while Apple Notes is completely for free. No longer will Evernote get any money from me, Apple Notes is perfect for me ❤💰
When I started into MacOS, early 2019, Evernote was integrated to Spotlight. It was possible to find notes inside MacOS Spotlight. I don't know what happened later, but it stopped working. Maybe an Apple issue.
I think that's an Evernote issue. When they did the big update, they didn't add it back.
Thanks Carl - I use Apple notes, but it's kind of a mess - needs some clean-up. So this is helpful! What is Apple Spotlight? If I have it, and I assume I do, I'm not familiar with it. I searched Apps and it is not another app, so this comment has unfortunately been highly confusing to me - thanks again.
It's not an app. It's Apple's built in search. You can access it via CMD + Spacebar on your Mac or by initiating a search on your mobile device (drag down from the middle of the screen)
@@Carl_Pullein Thanks!
but NO FONT CHANGE and no way to color the text in table form is a big issue for me , I use tables all the time and it feels so generic and difficult for my quick revision
Hi Masoon, that's because it's a note-taking application, not a word processor. If I want to change fonts, colours and have more feature-rich tables, I would use Pages.
@@Carl_Pullein for me the purpose of notes app is to make notes that can be revised easily in exams , so best thing is to highlight main points add tables and use diff color codes etc that can be glanced at once instead of having to read ur notes again and again or in hurry ,
so what would u suggest for such experience I havent found one app that works flawlessly like this , the only thing is Goodnotes and keynotes that I use but I am lookin for android notes app
Both Apple Notes and Evernote suffer from the same problem. There is no manual note sorting. That's a deal breaker for me. MS OneNote has manual sorting, however the app is really outdated and the mobile app is even worst.
Apple note in iOS17 will include a way to link to other notes. If they would add backlinks, then I would completely free from Obsidian.
Using your instructions, I began copying many of my notes from Evernote into Notes. That was going very well on my MacBook right up until I began getting storage full messages on all my devices! All of my Notes are iCloud based, so what happened? I am now really afraid to migrate any more files out of Evernote. Any ideas?
That's likely to be an iCloud storage issue. If you've got a lot of pictures and documents in Evernote, that's going to take up a. lot of space.
@@Carl_Pullein I’m showing 59 GB of iCloud storage available out of 200. That sounds like it should work, don’t you think?
@@Wellbaby94 yes, but your devices will also need space for backups and other things you may be storing in iCloud.
What will you do when evernote disappears?
That would be the trigger to move. Fortunately When Bending Spoons spent many millions of dollars on Evernote that reassured me it wasn't going to disappear.
@@Carl_Pullein from what I have heard Bending Spoons laid off all of the human workers at Evernote.
OK - I've read the entire thread and responses, and this gets close to my question, but not quite. Here it is: "What if you didn't have 13 years of notes in EverNote? What if you had to start today knowing what you know now? Would you use Apple Notes? @@Carl_Pullein
Agree 100%. I also use two apps for Notes. My second one is OneNote.
That sounds good.
I made the switch to Apple notes. I miss Evernotes but I have a fear for it’s long term viability. Hope I am wrong.
I think long-term, it's fine. Despite the headlines, there's not really been any layoffs. The staff have simply moved to Europe.
I've read a ton of good reviews about Apple notes. For me, Obsidian stole my heart. When I found out I could install a free plugin inside obsidian that allows me to call up any video (locally, or hosted online), like the one I'm watching now, and reference freaking timestamps, I was hooked. The other thing about Obsidian that is so different is its speed. There is just nothing faster in my opinion. I read some of your comments about the longevity of their business and whether or not they'd be around for the long haul. I hope so! The only thing Obsidian Mobile lacks to some degree is a native Quick Capture feature. I currently use Fleeting Notes which is a quick capture notes app that was built to Sync with your Obsidian vault. I 100% agree with you on the Markdown comment. I had to get used to it. I'd prefer the simplicity of Apple Notes. Markdown is definitely a "power user" thing.
I think that's always the danger with third-party apps. There's no guarantee they will be around for the long haul. That's not just an Obsidian issue; it's an industry-wide issue. It's always important to see what the motives of the founders are.
Sticking to Apple's stock apps more and more. Simplicity & cohesiveness is the way to go. You can't buy "Time"
Have to agree with you there, Neno.
Sooo... Reminders next? 😜
Hahahaha I do use Reminders. Our family shopping list is there so is my "Tickler" file.
how is the concept of productivity more interesting and relevant to an ordinar user, than to a super user?
Hahaha there's a special select group of strange people, like myself, that are obsessed with it. For everyone else, I'm pretty sure it's not interesting at all.
My first experiences with an iPhone and Apple Notes (specifically Quick Notes) did not go very well. I was new to the iOS ecosystem but not to MacOS which I'd been using for many years. I'd type a note in Apple Notes (either on the Mac or the phone and wait for it to sync. Well... I was too new to the iOS system to know that Quick Notes were not a thing at that time for phones. It worked on iPads but not the phone. Once I learned this (after much frustration), I was able to use it but you know, I haven't touched it on my phone in a long time. That distrust is still there. I do use it weekly for encrypted notes. On my phone I have an app that I use also on the desktop so I'm good. On the iPads I use whatever seems the most likely place I'd want to find it. Like you, quick stuff like links or ideas.
I've been with Evernote probably as long as you have, I have moved data from it over to what I use now, but I haven't deleted anything. I'm just not using it out of distrust and frustration with where it's gone and the pricing changes. A long time ago it was out of my price range with the exchange rate being the biggest killer for me.
Hey I just wanted to tell you, I've noticed a big shift in your last several videos. You're much more upbeat, you've been adding a lot of well placed humour. I'm not sure what else has changed, bur keep up the great work and you'll be at 200k before you know it! Cheers!
Hi Gaelyne, that's the great thing about productivity. It's a journey, and we fall into that practice of asking how can I do it better.
As for the videos, I am "changing" things a little. A big change will be coming in the next video. (I'm a little nervous about it)
@@Carl_Pullein The bit of 'over' acting in it was very cute and made the point really well. Humour is such a great way to teach and makes it so much more memorable! That could have been me sitting at that computer a few years ago!
@@GaelyneGasson Hahaha thank you, Gaelyne.
I love spotlight so much, that I don’t have any app icons on my iPhone for over a year lol
Me too! Spotlight has taken so much work off my hands 🙂
Apple notes is perfect, and was for me for years....until I left Apple then it became a nightmare. I lost 4000 notes despite Apples claim that it could be migrated.
Apple is a walled garden, ie, you are imprisoned.
You know Apple Notes has an Evernote Import?
Apple Notes is great until you accidentally delete some data from a note. Since it doesn't have note/version history, your data is just lost FOREVER.
That was really bold. I strongly disagree.
Markdown is future proof. Try to export all your notes from Apple Notes, you won't like neither the process, nor the result.
And it doesn't contradict WYSIWYG, all those "hard to remember nasty brackets" could be place with a button click, you're doing formatting from Apple Notes toolbar anyway.
Also Apple Notes can't extract text from the link, like Evernote does.
Note formatting options are poor at best. Really, even that "complex" markdown has more.
And syncing... Well, Apple couldn't in syncing before, they still can't into it, though it became better and more reliable. But still...
But I agree that it's probably "good enough", at least for some basic needs. But it's far from the best, not even close.
Try telling that to a 75-year-old retiree or a 24-year-old mother of three young kids who just wants to capture ideas and lists. There are billions of people who are just not interested in things like Markdown.
