The Mission's 1986 debut GOD'S OWN MEDICINE is one of the best albums of the 1980s. Worth investigation for more Mission UK.
Ditto to that
“I still believe in God, but God no longer believes in me….”
@@samstevenson5328 👍
I used to turn this song up, lay down on the floor by my speakers and just FEEL! Love it!
Best way to listen to music. Totally lose yourself in it!
I'd also recommend The Mission's track "Severina"
Actually ANYTHING on "god's own medicine" is pure awesome
If you want some classic 80’s Gothic Rock, react to the album “Floodland” by ‘Sisters of Mercy’. It will blow you away.
Agreed! Sisters of Mercy is a must!
You can 100% hear John Paul Jones' involvement on this track, the arrangement/production, (Kashmir type vibes, could have been on a Zeppelin album).
if you like this, you are going to love the Fields of the Nephilim,a great forgotten goth 80s-90s band, think pink floyd meets talk talk meets sisters of mercy.
The Mission are great but I’m more of a Sisters of Mercy fan myself their debut album is fantastic “Nine While Nine” is my favourite “No Time to Cry” and “Walk Away” were the singles (both brilliant)
Me who last night wore my Sisters of Mercy merch to The Mission and The Chameleons
@@noahmuchnikoff2369 😂👍
Thanks for the reaction Justin, I'm glad that you liked it, another fantastic song from them is "Wasteland", it's powerful like Tower.
The only Talk Talk album that you didn't react to is the first one, from that album I want to recommend the last song "Candy" which is wonderful.
I totally approve! "Candy" and "The Party's Over" are my favorite tracks from Talk Talk which is a band that doesn't really speak to me.
@@a.k.1740 and I approve you w "The Party" lol, "Have You Heard the News¿" is a good track too.
Time to add Butterfly on a wheel and wasteland to your playlist as well.
Swoon too.
No way! Listened to this in the car on my way up to Scotland about three weeks ago.
First time I’d listened to it for about 30 years. Had the 12” ( think it had an extended remix in it)
😂
These guys sound like a cross between Simple Minds (vocals) and Echo and the Bunnymen (instrumental s). A very good song!
The Mission is where the rest of Sisters of Mercy went after they couldn't stand Andrew Eldritch anymore. So yeah, Goth pedigree. Check out their debut single (I don't know if it's even on an album) Serpent's Kiss.
I’ve seen the mission olive, one of my all time favourite bands. Up there with the Fields of the Nephilim, The sisters of mercy and the Cult. They defined an era that no one was aware of unless you were there.
An atmospheric track that rocks! Love that combination.
I worked with Wayne for 8 years on his solo shows and Tower always lifted my spirits even at the end of a bad say. Loved watching the genuine smile on your face as certain parts hit!
Thats awesome Graham! I'm sure it was great working with him, as you say. Ty for watching!
A big powerful song from a great album. I would like to think that, if I didn't know already, I would be able to tell that John Paul Jones was heavily involved with the arrangements of this album.
It was nice to hear this track again. I used to play the "Children" album quite often back in the late 80s..
Great tune.
The song of which Gary Numan said: The one he wished he wrote it.
Still hoping to see you do Sisters of Mercy at some point. Either the albums "Floodland" or "Some Girls Wander By Mistake".
So, I'm usually quite measured about when in the day I listen to reaction videos, but when I saw this had just landed, I immediately dropped what I was doing, grabbed my headphones, and tuned right on in. What a great track! I'll confess I'm more familiar with the 4-minute single/radio edit of this track, and I've not heard either version for a long while, but listening today, it still sounds as good as it ever did, and yes, it richly deserves the full 8 minutes.
Thank you for taking the time to watch John :)
See this band live and you will be a Missionary from then on. Just finished their North American tour and about to tour the UK
Thank you for playing it in its entirety.
The music video for Tower of Strength is very Dungeons and Dragons like, worth watching.
People often talk about the 80s drum sound, use of reverb and synth tones, but there's also a vocal style and even a kind of melodic approach that"s characteristic of the decade. You can hear a similar declamatory vocal feel with a deep baritone and very open tone production using wide interval choices (fifths and octaves) that suit the densely layered drone-like instrumentation on tracks by OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark), Duran Duran, Big Country, even on early U2. This is not a criticism, just an observation. I enjoyed the song.
notice how the the entrance of dramtic drums happens TWICE. Once with the drum machine snare- then the REAL drums. HUGELY dramatic.
For sure!
After The Mission, Sisters of Mercy are "must do" reaction :)
There were a good amount of this, had someone told me this was a David Bowie cut I would have bit on it. A likeable song.
this takes me back, bought the 7-inch single when it hit the charts. Loved their music, 'Deliverance' also comes to mind.
The first 2-3 albums were epic. Deliverance, Blood Brother, Wasteland, several others.
Rain by the Cult. Well anything from the Love Album.
@@CAdams6398 Great album.
@@CAdams6398 For me The Cult comes down to the Dreamtime lp and the non-album single "Ressurection Joe" and that's it ! 😉
@@CAdams6398 You have a very good memory!😉
@@CAdams6398 It all depends on the times. Just like me!😄😉
Great track - my favourite of theirs. Fun to play, too. Not sure whether it's the way they do it, but tuning a guitar to DADDAD gives it just the right ringing tone to play this. If you like this track, try "Deliverance". You should also try some of Echo and the Bunnymen's music - they often hit a similar groove to this.
This is a great song. You've nailed it about the build. It's the perfect slow build to a huge climax. And I love the awesome fantasy-fueled video.
The record is a pale imitation of the live experience, and the record is fantastic. It's a great song to play as well.
H JP, if you're on a Goth kick, try my fav goth band. Fields of the Nephilim start with the brilliant Moonchild.
Been among my all-time favorites since I was 16 in 1986 ❤❤
For future and back reference, if one would wish to test my resilience and endeavour regarding perseverance in facing my prejudices on this friendly hospice of a channel dedicated to breakin down barriers in the musical realms, then is shall now print below wot I used to regard as my dreaded top 10 'rock' acts from the past.
10. The blinkin Cure 9. The blinkin Cult 8. The blinkin Inspiral Carpets 7. The blinkin Doors 6. The blinkin Blues Bros 5. The blinkin TheThe 4. The blinkin Levellers 3. Siouxsie & The blinkin Banshees 2. Garbage 1. The Mission
This list was based on hearing such tunes as the one you've just played: on the radio, occasionally in school/college ,clubs /discos and are often smothered in deep social ineptitude on my part - a subtle yet telling inability to endear myself to the social styles and fashion of said artists. Also, it didn't help that their songs were, frankly, crap!
Time has shown me however what accomplished songsmiths all of this Bunch are, along with The Verve / Oasis / The Beatles and Happy blinkin Mondays. That's the next 3 JustJP months sorted then! ✔
Great Fun . Diolch.
Love and Rockets are another incredible goth / rock band.
They are made up of 3 of four members of Bauhaus, sans Peter Murphy.
Before they became Love and Rockets they were Tones On Tail, another great moody goth band.
Love this song! Check out their song “Deliverance”, it’s also really good.
Just saw them last night! Absolutely incredible
You're now on something of a roll. Pretenders and now one of the most dramatic tracks of the Eighties. Great stuff.
Sweet! The MIssion are a bit of a guilty pleasure, but their pre-1993 catalog is well worth studying. After that it depends on whether you can live with WH's tendency to not only recycle the same lyrical gobbledegook multiple times (especially the sex songs and drug songs) - but also borrow musical material from everyone from The Cure to Ike & Tina to The Faces...
Try BUTTERFLY ON A WHEEL next!
Justin, I think you’d like Clan of Xymox (they later just became Xymox).
Check out “Moscoviet Mosquito”, “A Day”, “Evelyn”, “Obsession” and “Imagination “ to start with.
Thanks, man! 🧛🏻🧛🏻♀️🧛🏻♂️
Wonderful tune
Well that was a surprise, hearing that I'd recommended this song! I love it, though I have to confess I don't recall recommending it to you 🤔 - was it under a Sisters Of Mercy reaction maybe??
You recommended it in the "She Sells Sanctuary" reaction :)
This is the first band I saw live, and they were just as good as their records
"Goth" comes n many different flavors. This is just one type.
Hola friend! Quisieramos muchos ver eaa reaccion. Saludos!!!💪🖒🖐
This was always immense live
In my top 10 songs. So far you're the only one to react to this.
Glad you enjoyed John :)
Going to see The Mission open up for The Chameleons this year in Sep. in Dallas, TX🖤
How about The Chameleons on Just JP? Never got to hear them.....
@@HippoYnYGlaw YES PLEASE!!
@@samstevenson5328 Name that fave tune of yours and 75% he'll have given it a spin within 72hours😁😁
@@HippoYnYGlaw My favorite’s always been “Second Skin”
I'm seeing them in September in FL 🙂 I just finished typing that in another thread when I scrolled down and saw your comment.
If you went on a Goth tangent it would be fun to see you listen to Bauhaus. Goth before anyone had a name for it.
I got em on a list :)
@@JustJP Are The Church still on your list? Would love to hear you continue with them after you listened to and liked the track "Reptile" ages ago. 🤞
GREAT SONG!
Try “Butterfly On A Wheel” by them. 👍🏽
Great live. and epic sounding.
Re my comment, just curious btw. Wherever you saw them, did you get/hear, the whole eskimo thing?
@@jfergs.3302 yeh i heard fans shout that but never really got it myself. Crazy fans. eh.
@@paulcollins5586 I'm cut n pasting a reply here i got from CAdams6398: 'It was an early name given to their die hard fans, who would follow them around the globe! 😊' As i said to him, we live and learn eh 👍
Severina next! Love the mish.
Where thou goes. So goth I.😜🗼of 💪!!!💣-✌&❤
I would love for you to react to, the teardrop explodes, they had a great sound
Great tune, playing, production. Not their 'rockiest', more a goth ballad this. But definitey haunting and full of atmos. If not staying with the album JP, i'd deffo give Serpents Kiss a listen, and for a live taster Shelter From the Storm. The 12in B side of the single IV, best version. Q: Apropos of them live, saw them bunch of times. And in Liverpool (at least), prior them going on stage, the crowd would chant, cry out 'Eskimo' ! don't know why, anyone? Or just in 'The Pool' 🤔
@@CAdams6398 Ahhhh, cheers. I live and learn 🙂
John Paul Jones producer ... keyboards and strings arrangements?
They opened for Robert Plant around this time and the boobirds forced them off stage. So I saw about half a set. I thought they were very good.
That's a shame! But I'm glad you got to see them at all. They're touring again. I never really checked them out before so I'm happy to join JP on this journey. I'm seeing the Chameleons (technically Chameleons Vox) open for them in September!
It's not a song, it's a religious experience.
One of their best. The rich sound they needed to show their value (my only reserve - the guitar could be a bit stronger in the mix)
On vinyl it sounded great.
Put Robert Plant in there and sprinkle with Jimi Page….Hmmmmmm
Bela Lugousi’s dead by Bauhaus! No more goth than that!
I may be wrong but I think he's done it...?
@@HippoYnYGlaw hopefully. I’ll search.
Not a bad album at all that!!
I watched the mission in Liverpool a couple of years back as my uncle was a massive fan. And I swear they are one of the best live bands you will ever see!! Wayne hussey is one of the greatest live singers around. If anyone ever gets chance buy tickets if they are in town
You did the Waterboys but you did the worst first song possible.
You should listen to The Pagan Place album, then This is the sea.
Try Savage Earth Heart (especially live at Gladtonbury ‘86)
Apart from their series of first singles in 1986/87 I am not fond of this band. This track reminds me of the Simple Minds from the mid 80's and it's a period that I don't like at all !😒
@Paul-Martin Scheib I really like early Simple Minds (1978-82) but from Sparkle in the Rain and the rest, it really became something else that doesn't speak to me anymore and this piece from The Mission reminds me of this era of SM. It's actually quite subjective but that's the way it is for me.😉
Too Long and too normal song. Nothing memorable.
They have so many good songs. Not the best first song, imo.
